When Arab Girls Break The Rules: A Qualitative Study, Camelia Ibrahim-Nassar Jan 2016

When Arab Girls Break The Rules: A Qualitative Study, Camelia Ibrahim-Nassar

Papers from the International Association for Cross-Cultural Psychology Conferences

Much has been written about the social control of Arab girls as one of the parental practices in a collective culture. Most girls are subject to strict rules and modesty codes and only a few dare to confront their culture by breaking the rules and engaging in risky unacceptable behavior. In this study, we interviewed eight such girls to examine why, when, and how they defied acceptable social norms and the consequences they suffered. Interestingly, the experience of risk taking yielded narratives that revealed a search for personal, social, and gender identity and highlighted the effect of the strictness of …

Nasser Of Egypt And The Egypt Of Nasser, Pria G. Jackson Jan 2016

Nasser Of Egypt And The Egypt Of Nasser, Pria G. Jackson

Undergraduate Research Awards

In the Egyptian consciousness, there is a date that resonates in the nation’s memory as the official catalyst that led to the rise of modern Egypt: July 23, 1952. On this day, a military group called the Free Officers rose up and seized control of Egypt from the monarchs and British colonizers in a near bloodless coup d’état. The face of the Free Officers at the time of the coup was General Muhammad Naguib (1901 – 1984), but the brain and heart of the movement was the then colonel Gamal Abdel Nasser (1918 – 1970). During the first three years …

The Age Of Racial Profiling In The Context Of Terrorism, Amanda L. Smith, Susan E. Mason Jan 2016

The Age Of Racial Profiling In The Context Of Terrorism, Amanda L. Smith, Susan E. Mason

Modern Psychological Studies

Racial profiling refers to the law enforcement practice of using only race or ethnicity as probable cause to search or arrest an individual. The public has found racial profiling to be unjustified in the context of common crime, but tends to support the practice in the context of terrorism. The current study uses an explicit judgment survey to examine the expression of prejudice and factors that influence stereotyping. The study found that participants aged 18 to 24, and those who identified with a political party, were the participants most likely to racially profile individuals with stereotypical Middle-Eastern features to be …

Defect Or Defend? Explaining Military Responses During The Arab Uprisings, Timothy Hazen Jan 2016

Defect Or Defend? Explaining Military Responses During The Arab Uprisings, Timothy Hazen

Dissertations

The Arab uprisings demonstrated that a military's response to the domestic unrest had a significant impact on whether the protests were successful and triggered regime change. In Egypt and Tunisia, the militaries defected from the incumbent regimes, and as a result the ruling leaders were removed, whereas in Bahrain, the military defended the regime and used violence against protesters, which led to the continuation of the government's rule. Scholars identify numerous factors to explain Middle East and North African (MENA) military behavior during the Arab uprising but overall these arguments tend to overemphasize individual case studies and fail to provide …

Palestinian Opinion On Peace: Analysis Of Survey Data From The Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kaylee G. Brink Jan 2016

Palestinian Opinion On Peace: Analysis Of Survey Data From The Occupied Palestinian Territories, Kaylee G. Brink

University Honors Theses

There have been many articles on the influence of public opinion on Palestinian peace with Israel, but none have been written using data since the early 2000s. This gap is important because many Israeli and Palestinian citizens have increasingly lost hope in the Oslo peace process. This article uses data from 2006 to 2012 to analyze changes in Palestinian support for peace with Israel. Variables include political affiliation, gender, religiosity, economic situation, and area of residence. The Arab Barometer and the Palestinian Center originally gathered all of the data for Policy and Survey Research used in this paper. A binomial …
