Contesting Liberalism, Refusing Death: A Biopolitical Critique Of Navajo History, Melanie K. Yazzie Oct 2016

Contesting Liberalism, Refusing Death: A Biopolitical Critique Of Navajo History, Melanie K. Yazzie

American Studies ETDs

This dissertation considers the pivotal role that liberalism, particularly as it is expressed and enforced through post-livestock reduction era logics of tribal economic development, plays in advancing a relentless and violent form of U.S. settler colonialism bent on the elimination of Navajo life. I use Michel Foucault’s framework of biopolitics as a theory of history to unlock, identify, and interpret what brought Navajo life into the realm of explicit calculation in Navajo political formations. I use the terms ‘experimental liberalism’ and ‘extractive liberalism’ to frame the two primary biopolitical formations I see at work in this period of Navajo history. …

“I Feel Like I’M Going Extinct”: Conversations About The Confederacy In South Central Virginia, Lauren R. Moore Oct 2016

“I Feel Like I’M Going Extinct”: Conversations About The Confederacy In South Central Virginia, Lauren R. Moore

ASA Annual Conference

Summer 2015 was a time of renewed attention to the persistence and prominence of the Confederate (or rebel) flag in the southern United States. As national attention to the flag increased, I was undertaking eight weeks of preliminary fieldwork in a Virginia town named for general JEB Stuart. This paper examines the conversations surrounding the flag and other Confederate symbols that took place in person and in an online group for county residents. In it, I examine how flag supporters draw on their feelings of cultural and economic marginalization to resist the flag’s removal. While racism undergirds some of the …

Marginalization And Resilience From Within And Without Appalachia: Views On Place And Disruption In Eastern Kentucky And Washington, D.C., Kirsten L. Crase Oct 2016

Marginalization And Resilience From Within And Without Appalachia: Views On Place And Disruption In Eastern Kentucky And Washington, D.C., Kirsten L. Crase

ASA Annual Conference

The people who reside amidst Appalachia's misty mountains experience geographical and place-based marginalization in a way that is unique in the American context, and that indeed has long helped define the very notion of geographical "outsider-dom." Yet Appalachians are not alone in experiencing this kind of place-based marginalization, even if it is a more primary source of marginalization here than in other places, where place-based marginalization often intersects more visibly with marginalization on the basis of race, religion, etc. But what might we learn from putting voices from Appalachia’s misty and marginalized mountains in a kind of conversation with voices …

Extending Gaventa: A Foucauldian Reading Of Power And Powerlessness, Judson C. Abraham Oct 2016

Extending Gaventa: A Foucauldian Reading Of Power And Powerlessness, Judson C. Abraham

ASA Annual Conference

John Gaventa’s Power and Powerlessness: Quiescence and Rebellion in an Appalachian Valley uses political science’s “three faces of power” literature to investigate the fraught relations between residents of the Clear Fork Valley (CFV), a subregion of central Appalachia, and the American Association (AA), a multinational corporation holding most of the valley’s land and coal resources. Each face of power describes a different way actors may behave in a power relationship. Gaventa focuses on what Steven Lukes terms the third face of power, which emphasizes how elites use ideology to make the powerless voluntarily act against their own interests to the …

Part-Time Faculty In Rural Appalachia: Not What You Might Think, Ruby Robinson Oct 2016

Part-Time Faculty In Rural Appalachia: Not What You Might Think, Ruby Robinson

ASA Annual Conference

Community colleges play an important role in post-secondary education, especially in the rural Appalachian region. Community colleges employ an overwhelming majority of part-time faculty. Part-time faculty are often perceived as having a negative influence on the quality of education within community colleges. They are perceived as temporary employees who are seeking full-time faculty positions and are therefore less committed to the mission of the community college and the rural Appalachian community.

This paper investigated the perceptions of the professional roles and relationships of the English part-time faculty at rural Appalachian community colleges. Part-time faculty were interviewed to identify the multiple …

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long Oct 2016

Food Images In Traditional Appalachian Music: Inventing And Homogenizing A Regional Cuisine, Lucy M. Long

ASA Annual Conference

Old-time Appalachian tune titles and song lyrics frequently reference food and drink. These include specific dishes (for example, cornbread, biscuits, gravy, moonshine), ingredients (corn, cabbage, squirrels, chickens, sack of meal), and cooking implements (skillet, frying pan), as well as ways of obtaining food (hunting, farming, hoeing corn) and cooking it (frying, boiling). These references give descriptions of typical foods of the region, but they also offer an homogenized impression of what constitutes Appalachian foodways. While there are basic ingredients common throughout the area, there is a great deal of diversity in Appalachian foodways that reflects the diverse ethnicities, social classes, …

Motivations And Locavore Tendencies: A Preliminary Visitor Study Of Lexington, Kentucky Craft Breweries, Kenneth J. Berend Jr., Michael J. Bradley, James N. Maples Oct 2016

Motivations And Locavore Tendencies: A Preliminary Visitor Study Of Lexington, Kentucky Craft Breweries, Kenneth J. Berend Jr., Michael J. Bradley, James N. Maples

ASA Annual Conference

The emergence of craft beer in recent years has contributed to increased participation in beer tourism. However, there is a dearth of literature on brewery visitors. A key first step in researching beer tourism is to obtain an initial understanding of who is visiting breweries and why. This may provide information to better market target audiences. This information provides valuable insight for Kentucky brewery management and operations. Although this research concentrates on one state, it may enhance experiences at breweries in other states, increasing initial and repeat visitation. This study hopes to bring forth more information similar to the visitor …

Increasing Rural Tourism: A Demographic Profile Of Visitors To An Ohv Park In Rural Kentucky, Shaunna L. Scott, Michael J. Bradley, James Maples

ASA Annual Conference

As the foundation for their local economies continue to change, communities in rural eastern Kentucky continue to struggle economically. In efforts to help these rural communities recover, leadership and entrepreneurs have identified natural resources in eastern Kentucky as a footing by which to build a new economic structure related to outdoor recreation. As awareness of these areas continues to grow, many outdoor recreation resources and experiences are generating investment and recreation interest. In that outdoor recreation development is already in process in many places, those interested in facilitating these experiences have decisions to make regarding development and marketing. However, there …

Ecological Crisis And The Re-Enchantment Of Nature In Jaime Huenún’S Reducciones., Ida Day Oct 2016

Ecological Crisis And The Re-Enchantment Of Nature In Jaime Huenún’S Reducciones., Ida Day

Modern Languages Faculty Research

Chilean poet Jaime Huenún’s Reducciones (Reductions; 2012) explores the social and environmental consequences of European colonization since the second half of the nineteenth century, when southern Chile received thousands of German immigrants as part of a state-sponsored colonization plan. Confronted with large stretches of impenetrable native forests, the colonists began a deforestation process in order to prepare the land for agriculture and livestock farming, which left a profound impact on the society, economy, and geography of the region. In less than a century, the region spanning La Araucanía to Chiloé lost at least three million hectares of native forests. The …

Palaeoproteomic Evidence Identifies Archaic Hominins Associated With The Châtelperronian At The Grotte Du Renne, Frido Welker, Mateja Hajdinjak, Sahra Talamo Oct 2016

Palaeoproteomic Evidence Identifies Archaic Hominins Associated With The Châtelperronian At The Grotte Du Renne, Frido Welker, Mateja Hajdinjak, Sahra Talamo

KIP Articles

In Western Europe, the Middle to Upper Paleolithic transition is associated with the disappearance of Neandertals and the spread of anatomically modern humans (AMHs). Current chronological, behavioral, and biological models of this transitional period hinge on the Châtelperronian technocomplex. At the site of the Grotte du Renne, Arcy-sur-Cure, morphological Neandertal specimens are not directly dated but are contextually associated with the Châtelperronian, which contains bone points and beads. The association between Neandertals and this “transitional” assemblage has been controversial because of the lack either of a direct hominin radiocarbon date or of molecular confirmation of the Neandertal affiliation. Here we …

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective Framework Oct 2016

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective Framework

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Engaging today’s issues in higher education requires strong analytical tools that can address the complex nature of our institutional systems and their involved actors. This paper forwards a critical race institutional logics perspective (CRILP). CRILP examines both organizations as they are embedded in a neoliberal and racist society and actor identity, agency, decision-making, and their relation to power. It is important to centralize actor-level racial identity and intersecting identities as race and racism are still pervasive in today’s society. Additionally, the current state of higher education as a market-driven entity leads to thinking about the ways that neoliberalism have permeated …
