Balancing Bananas: Collection Assessment Of Patron‐Driven Acquisitions, Gabrielle Wiersma, Rhonda Glazier, Denise Pan, Stephanie Spratt

Charleston Library Conference

The libraries in the University of Colorado (CU) System have been using patron‐driven acquisitions (PDA) to build a shared collection of e‐books for many years. This paper presents our experiences as both early adopters of PDA and libraries with longstanding PDA e‐book programs and describes an analysis of how PDA has impacted collections at each of the libraries in the CU System.

Multiplying By Division: Mapping The Collection At University Of North Texas Libraries, Karen Harker, Janette Klein, Laurel Crawford

Charleston Library Conference

The University of North Texas (UNT) Libraries has developed a unique collection assessment tool, the Collection Map, to provide support for a new access‐based collection development philosophy. UNT Librarians realized the limitations of traditional assessment methods to gauge the impact of emerging acquisitions models such as demand‐driven acquisitions (DDA) and large interdisciplinary e‐book collections. What was needed was a flexible, nimble assessment system to track access, holdings, and interlibrary loan (ILL) activity for each academic discipline. The Collection Map is a database that links items, and their associated data, to any one of several dozen overlapping subcollections via Library of …

The Future Of Textbooks And Course Reserves In Academic Libraries: An Evolving Role And Emerging Opportunity, Osman Celik, Roxanne M. Peck Oct 2016

The Future Of Textbooks And Course Reserves In Academic Libraries: An Evolving Role And Emerging Opportunity, Osman Celik, Roxanne M. Peck

Charleston Library Conference

With the rising costs of textbooks, their affordability and accessibility in college and university campuses has emerged as a major financial obstacle for students. This challenge presents an opportunity for academic and research libraries in providing textbook affordability and accessibility for their students. Textbooks have been frequently excluded from the majority of academic and research libraries’ collection development policies. Textbooks are often on the list of materials rarely purchased by libraries. Encouraging libraries to re‐evaluate and re‐strategize their traditional approach to textbook purchasing and course reserves is critical. Embracing more textbooks and expanding the course reserves has the potential to …

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt Oct 2016

Finding Chinese Jesus: Chinese Christians And American Missionaries In The Republic Of China (1912-1949), Matthew Joseph Douthitt

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis investigates the beliefs and practices of Chinese Christians and their American missionary counterparts in the Republic of China (1912-1949). Between the fall of the Qing Dynasty and the rise of the People's Republic, the Chinese people seriously reexamined politics, religion, and their relationship with the West. Many scholars claim that Chinese people could not completely understand and accept Christianity due to insurmountable cultural differences. I would argue religious misunderstanding did not befall our historical subjects the Chinese Christians; rather misunderstanding has plagued the modern scholar. Misunderstanding did not arise from a centuries old cultural mindset. Instead, Sino-Christianity conformed …

From Invisible To Visible : Representations And Self-Representaions Of Hakka Women In Hong Kong, 1900s-Present, Ka Lo Yau Oct 2016

From Invisible To Visible : Representations And Self-Representaions Of Hakka Women In Hong Kong, 1900s-Present, Ka Lo Yau

Lingnan Theses

What we perceive as the essential characteristics of Hakka women today are in fact historically constructed and utilized for various purposes by different agents, including Western missionaries, Hakka elites, museum curators and heritage preservationists. This long historical process has made the Hakka women increasingly visible in the public scene. Some scholars argue that it was the men who attempted to manipulate the representations of Hakka women to justify their exploitation of women. As Hung Hsin-lan and Helen Siu have reminded us, the study of Hakka women should be liberated from the lens of exploitation and victimhood and we should position …

A Moveable Beast: Subjective Influence Of Human-Animal Relationships On Risk Perception, And Risk Behaviour During Bushfire Threat, Joshua L. Trigg, Kirrilly Thompson, Bradley Smith, Pauleen Bennett Oct 2016

A Moveable Beast: Subjective Influence Of Human-Animal Relationships On Risk Perception, And Risk Behaviour During Bushfire Threat, Joshua L. Trigg, Kirrilly Thompson, Bradley Smith, Pauleen Bennett

The Qualitative Report

This article examines how human-animal connections influence risk perception and behaviour in companion animal guardians exposed to bushfire threat in Australia. Although the objective role of psychological bonds with companion animals is well accepted by researchers, subjective interpretations of these bonds by animal guardians are relatively underexamined in this context. We argue that the ways in which connections with pets and other animals are represented influences different forms of safety-risk perception and behaviour when managing animals’ safety in the face of disaster threat. Thematic analysis of 21 semi-structured interviews with South Australian residents in bushfire-affected areas supported the role of …

Exploiting Metacognitive Networks Embedded In Narrative Focus Group Interviews Using Nodexl, Divan Jagals, Marthie Sophia Van Der Walt Oct 2016

Exploiting Metacognitive Networks Embedded In Narrative Focus Group Interviews Using Nodexl, Divan Jagals, Marthie Sophia Van Der Walt

The Qualitative Report

Development of metacognitive theory for changing pedagogy remains an essential research activity. A lack of sufficient clear-cut qualitative analysis procedures extracting embedded metacognitive constructs from qualitative data (e.g., narrative focus group interviews) can hinder development of theory. An approach is therefore needed to analyse qualitative metacognitive data exploiting embedded metacognitive constructs for theory development. In an undergraduate fourth-year mathematics education module, two groups of students (Group A: n = 6; Group B: n = 5) participated in a series of focus group interviews. Participants designed and refined mathematics lessons about the concept of place value. We identified metacognitive networks as …
