Towards A Participatory Netnography: Collaborating With Children In Virtual Worlds Research, Ashley Donkin, Donell Holloway, Lelia Green
Towards A Participatory Netnography: Collaborating With Children In Virtual Worlds Research, Ashley Donkin, Donell Holloway, Lelia Green
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
The new sociology of childhood has encouraged social researchers to incorporate children in as much of the research process as possible. However, whilst some success has been achieved within traditional ethnographic studies, netnography has been slow to make this a reality. This article discusses the previous online research into children’s virtual worlds, which has rarely incorporated young children into the data collection or research analysis processes. The opportunity for researchers to use participatory approaches to collaborating with their child participants and collecting online data is limited due to ethical constraints. The ethical challenges of conducting netnography are compounded by a …
The Agency Of Meetings As Systemic Process In The Constitution Of Organizations: Insights From A Longitudinal Study And Bifocal Analysis Of An Organizations Meetings, Martin Duffy
Doctoral
Guided by a systemic and processual perspective, this research considers meetings as a collective organizational phenomenon and analyses how they contribute to the constitution of organizations. Longitudinal immersion as a participant observer in one organization's 'river of discourse' prompted initial abductive theory development to conceptualize meetings as a collective phenomenon, rather than studying them as individual-centered events. Preliminary analysis conducted during data recording indicated collective agency that could not be attributed to individual meetings, nor to the intentionality of meeting participants. Subsequent bifocal analysis of the meetings' discourse data reveals modes of meeting connectivity that reflect and contribute to their …

Seeing Harry Potter As An At-Risk Student: Critical Literacy, Cultural Capital, And The Wizarding World, Dawan Coombs, Jon Ostenson, Whitney Sommerville
Faculty Publications
Despite his celebrity status in the wizard community, Harry’s lack of familiarity with its culture, language, social structures, and institutions constantly causes him to question his competence and magical potential. Although most muggle teens will never deal with the challenges Harry confronts as he tries to sort out Quidditch from Slytherin and Hufflepuff on his first visit to Diagon Alley, they can empathize with Harry’s attempts to acculturate into the social, academic, and political norms of a very unfamiliar world. Many students in secondary schools exist on the margins because of disconnects between their own cultures, languages, and social practices …

Antropologi Indonesia
Talaud is an archipelagic regency in the northern border area of Indonesia and immediately next to the southern part of the Philipines. As a regency with cultural ties to the peoples in southern Philipines, issues of how peoples in border areas preserve their identity as a nation by practicing local genius has been debated in many academic and journalistic reports. How they are keep their national identity as cultural practices. This article portrays the daily cultural practices of the people of Talaud in order to preserve Indonesian identity, which can be seen as practices for national culture resilience.

Kontra Publik Keagamaan Dalam Media Baru: Islam, Kebudayaan Populer, Dan Media Sosial Pada Gerakan #Indonesiatanpajil, Imam Ardhianto
Antropologi Indonesia
This article explores the rise of contemporary Islamic movement that emerged as a result of a counter-public phenomenon over the discourse of liberal Islam in Indonesia. The phenomena explain the new entry point to understand the relationship between social media, popular culture, and the articulation of Islamic identity and piousness among urban youth in Indonesia. Taking case on the emerging popular-religious movement of #IndonesiatanpaJIL, that were arise from social media sites (Twitter, Facebook, and Youtube), this article examined how this movement was creatively playing Islamic discourse and the notions of nationalism/citizenship through urban pop culture materiality and commercialized public spaces. …

Rethinking Breast Mountain (Yuam): Surgical Treatments of Breast Cancer in South Korea, 1959-1993 by Soyoung Suh
This article analyzes premodern Korean medical treatises, professional surgical journals, and patient memoirs to expand our understanding of surgical treatment of breast cancer between 1959 and 1993 in South Korea. This essay discusses changing historical connotations of breast ailments, treatments, and surgical interventions. Although the depiction of breast …
Foucault Against Ethics: Subjectivity And Critique After Humanism, Patrick Gamez
Foucault Against Ethics: Subjectivity And Critique After Humanism, Patrick Gamez
Arts, Languages and Philosophy Faculty Research & Creative Works
This dissertation is in the first place an interpretation of the thought of Michel Foucault. Beyond interpretation, it also makes provides a qualified defense of his views on the significance of ethical theory, particularly in its “critical” forms, the shape of the space of reasons, and the role of subjectivity within it.
I take as my starting point an orthodox view of Foucault’s work, namely, that it can divided in terms of its content into three distinct periods. First, an “archaeological” phase spanning most of the 1960s. Second, a “genealogical” devoted to unearthing power-relations beneath purportedly progressive institutions. Finally, an …
Women Leaders As Change Agents: Mary Campbell’S Story Of Academic And Community Leadership, Raelynn Parmely '17
Women Leaders As Change Agents: Mary Campbell’S Story Of Academic And Community Leadership, Raelynn Parmely '17
Outstanding Ethnographic Research Projects
Through this ethnographic study, I had the pleasure of being introduced to Mary Campbell. Mary was born and raised in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and grew up in a household made up of her mom, her father, and three older brothers. Unlike families that held their daughters and sons to different gendered standards, Mary always received encouragement from her family that she could do whatever her brothers did (see Figure 1). Mary attributes her Catholic upbringing with instilling many of the values that she maintains today, such as giving back to her community. During a service project in which she participated during …
"Like A Parasite Dozing In The Gut": Idleness And Tending In J.M. Coetzee's Life And Times Of Michael K, Patrick Barrett
"Like A Parasite Dozing In The Gut": Idleness And Tending In J.M. Coetzee's Life And Times Of Michael K, Patrick Barrett
University Honors Theses
This paper will attempt to articulate how idleness functions in J.M. Coetzee’s 1983 novel Life and Times of Michael K, and to analyze how it might be undermining or commenting on the idea of idleness which was discursively produced in South Africa in the 17th and 18th centuries. Coetzee develops a commentary on the European representation of idleness in his book White Writing: On the Culture of Letters in South Africa, which for my purposes will serve as a jumping off point for a reading of Michael K. Furthermore, I will seek to examine the ways in which idleness does …
Interpreting Megalithic Tomb Orientations And Siting Within Broader Cultural Contexts, Frank Prendergast
Interpreting Megalithic Tomb Orientations And Siting Within Broader Cultural Contexts, Frank Prendergast
Articles
This paper assesses the measured axial orientations and siting of Irish passage tombs. The distribution of monuments with passages/entrances directed at related tombs/cairns is shown. Where this phenomenon occurs, the targeted structure is invariably located at a higher elevation on the skyline and this could suggest a symbolic and hierarchical relationship in their relative siting in the landscape. Additional analysis of astronomical declinations at a national scale has identified tombs with an axial alignment towards the rising and setting positions of the Sun at the winter and summer solstices. A criteria-based framework is developed which potentially allows for these types …
Comparison Of Dry-Cleaning Sponges Used To Remove Soot From Textiles, Allison M. Anderson
Comparison Of Dry-Cleaning Sponges Used To Remove Soot From Textiles, Allison M. Anderson
Open Access Master's Theses
Particulate soil that settles onto textiles can cause mechanical or chemical damage that weakens the object and negatively affects its appearance. Soil removal methods such as vacuuming, wetcleaning, and solvent cleaning may remove unsatisfactory quantities of soil or cannot be used due to the condition or characteristics of a textile. Natural rubber block sponges and polyurethane foam sponges, commonly sold as cosmetic applicators, have been used for surface cleaning by some textile conservators. Published literature that focuses on sponges’ efficacy, risks, or benefits is limited; existing research is limited to paintings conservation research and brief mentions in case studies. This …
Constructing A Postcolonial Feminist Ethnography, Jennifer Manning
Constructing A Postcolonial Feminist Ethnography, Jennifer Manning
Articles
Purpose – The paper details the construction of a postcolonial feminist approach to ethnography; providing insight into how the researcher developed her ethnographic approach based on her theoretical framework and demonstrating how she undertook this research. Specifically, the purpose of this paper is to outline how the researcher identified positionality and representation as the primary challenges of undertaking a postcolonial feminist ethnography with marginalised Maya women in Guatemala, and how she addressed these complexities in the field.
Design/methodology/approach – This postcolonial feminist ethnography was conducted over a three-month period in the rural highlands of Sololá, Guatemala. This approach bridges the …

L’Art Nouveau Dans L’Architecture Philippine. L’Occident En Orient, Erik Akpedonu, Fernando N. Zialcita
Sociology & Anthropology Department Faculty Publications
Speaking Back To Theory: Community Development Practices In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Colleen Mary Carlon
Speaking Back To Theory: Community Development Practices In The South West Region Of Western Australia, Colleen Mary Carlon
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This thesis explores how everyday knowledge of community development practices can inform the theorising of community development in Australia. The literature of community development offers a rich source for understanding and explaining the tensions and dilemmas of collective endeavour in context, yet arguments for particular approaches to community development can serve to evaluate practice in context. In this research, however, case studies are positioned as a source of knowledge. The power of case studies lies in their ability to portray collective action and collective action is what differentiates community development from other approaches to problems. The capacity to work in …
New Australian Plants And Animals. An Exhibition - And - Physiology, Phenomenology And Photography: Picturing The Indeterminate Within An Australian Art Practice. An Exegesis, Michael Gray
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
This practice-led research project investigates indeterminate aspects of perception related to human vision and postcolonial conditioning. Through an inventive range of lens-based artworks, the research draws parallels between preconscious visual phenomena and the subjective experience of non-indigenous Australians of multiple generations.
The resulting body of creative work, New Australian Plants and Animals, can be seen to approach preconscious visual phenomena derived from the physiology of the human eye through the use of primitive photographic lens technology. This process is applied to the subject matter: introduced plants and partially naturalised migrants. This synthesis of subject and materials creates new insights …
Towards Trialectic Space: An Experiment In Cultural Misunderstanding And Disorientation, Clive Barstow
Towards Trialectic Space: An Experiment In Cultural Misunderstanding And Disorientation, Clive Barstow
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This paper presents a praxical model of collaboration between artists in Australia and China in which the misrepresentation and misinterpretation of language (Ang 1997) within Homi Bhabha’s (1990) thirdspace theories are examined. To avoid the polarities of othering (Dervin, 2014), I adopt Henri Lefebvre’s model of cumulative trialectics (1991) as a new thirdspace that more accurately represents the complexities of modern day geographies and hybrid communities by extending the binary analysis of the past and present and beyond the real and the imagined. Trialectics expand our understanding beyond physical geographies by suggesting a cerebral space that searches for new meaning …
What Is Era Really Measuring?, Lyndall Adams, Clive Barstow, Paul Uhlmann
What Is Era Really Measuring?, Lyndall Adams, Clive Barstow, Paul Uhlmann
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
How successful is ERA in measuring creative research? The ERA (2015) results would appear to advantage: citations over peer review, traditional research over non-traditional outputs and certain geographical locations over others. If indeed this is true, what are the implications for the future development of NTOs in this country given the recent article by NAVA (Winikoff, 2016), presenting the debate about the state of play of our art schools as one of survival and loss. The case for survival is one that needs to be closely examined where local and geographical factors are at play.
Nothing Happens Here: Songs About Perth, Jon Stratton, Adam Trainer
Nothing Happens Here: Songs About Perth, Jon Stratton, Adam Trainer
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This essay examines Perth as portrayed through the lyrics of popular songs written by people who grew up in the city. These lyrics tend to reproduce the dominant myths about the city: that it is isolated, that it is self-satisfied, that little happens there. Perth became the focus of song lyrics during the late 1970s time of punk with titles such as 'Arsehole of the Universe' and 'Perth Is a Culture Shock'. Even the Eurogliders' 1984 hit, 'Heaven Must Be There', is based on a rejection of life in Perth. However, Perth was also home to Dave Warner, whose songs …
Creating Shared Norms In Schools - A Theoretical Approach, Maryanne Macdonald, Eyal Gringart, Jan Gray
Creating Shared Norms In Schools - A Theoretical Approach, Maryanne Macdonald, Eyal Gringart, Jan Gray
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
Whilst some improvements to Indigenous education outcomes have occurred in recent years, there remains considerable inequity in the educational experiences and long-term engagement of Indigenous and non-Indigenous students. One of the factors contributing to the challenging environment for Indigenous students is dissonance of social norms, as a result of ethnic and socioeconomic differences between teacher and student. Many hegemonic culture teachers are unaware of Standpoint Theory and the way in which normative beliefs impact on classroom interactions and student outcomes at the cultural interface. This paper draws on the Theory of Planned Behaviour (TBP) to illustrate ways in which schools …
Predicting The Impact Of Future Climate On Ecologically Important Macroalgae, Charlie Phelps
Predicting The Impact Of Future Climate On Ecologically Important Macroalgae, Charlie Phelps
Theses: Doctorates and Masters
Macroalgae play an important role in coastal reef systems and are often referred to as ecosystem engineers. They serve as primary producers, supporting a diverse range of organisms, and are a sink for atmospheric CO2. Water acidification and ocean warming caused by anthropogenic activities are affecting many marine flora and fauna, potentially impacting the physical and chemical performance of macroalgae and the consumption rates of associated herbivores. Many studies have focused on ocean acidification or ocean warming individually but there is an overall lack of research investigating the combined effects and the ensuing repercussions on consumer-prey relationships.

Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E.
Be Your Own Guru: Authoritarianism And The Problem Of The Guru In Conscious Evolution, Mcauley, Charles E.
Journal of Conscious Evolution
This paper is an exploration of the problematic nature of the guru/disciple relationship, specifically, in Western Society. It begins with a discussion of the nature of spirituality and the spiritual quest. To contextualize the process, I also discuss my own spiritual path based in Roman Catholicism, Taoism, Buddhism and my thoughts on the philosophy of Krishnamurti. I explore the topic of the authoritarian follower in some depth. Its connection is symbiotic to the existence of the authoritarian leader. This connection is demonstrated within this paper as well. Additionally, I look at the flaws in some well-known guru figures and how …

The Making Of Seaside’S “Indian Place”: Contested And Enduring Native Spaces On The Nineteenth Century Oregon Coast, Douglas Deur
Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations
During the mid nineteenth century, non-Native settlement and activities disrupted and changed historic Chinook and Clatsop communities at the mouth of the Columbia River. Indian Place in what would be Seaside, Oregon, became home to a number of displaced peoples and an enclave where “the living gathered with the remains of the dead,” for “modest protection from the apocalyptic changes that so radically disrupted tribal lands, lives, and worldviews.” Douglas Deur documents tribal migration to the Indian Place during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries and calls attention to many of its significant early residents. Transitional communities such as …
