Women At The Crossroads, Women At The Forefront, American Women In Letterpress Printing In The Nineteenth Century, Dianne L. Roman Ms Jan 2016

Women At The Crossroads, Women At The Forefront, American Women In Letterpress Printing In The Nineteenth Century, Dianne L. Roman Ms

Theses and Dissertations

The significant role of the female printer in the American home-based print shops during the colonial and early republic periods has been documented in print history, socioeconomic, labor, and women studies, yet with the industrialization of the printing trade, women’s presence is thought to have disappeared. Contrary to the belief that industrialization of the print shop eradicated women’s involvement in skilled employments such as typesetting, the creation of the Women’s Cooperative Printing Union in California and the creation and chartering of the Women’s Typographical Union in New York, both in the late 1860s, clearly indicate that women continued to work …

Dietary Adaptations And Intra- And Interspecific Variation In Dental Occlusal Shape In Hominin And Non-Hominin Primates, Kelsey O'Neill Jan 2016

Dietary Adaptations And Intra- And Interspecific Variation In Dental Occlusal Shape In Hominin And Non-Hominin Primates, Kelsey O'Neill

Theses and Dissertations

Dental morphology and tooth shape have been used to recreate the

dietary adaptations for extinct species, and thus dental variation can provide

information on the relationship between fossil species and their

paleoenvironments. Variation in living species with known behaviors can provide

a baseline for interpreting morphology, and behavior, in the fossil record.

Tooth occlusal surface outlines in hominins and non-hominin primates, and other

mammals, have been used for assessments of taxonomic significance, with

variability often considered as being primarily phylogenetic. Few studies have

attempted to assess how diet might influence the pattern of variability in closely

related species. Here the …

Beyond The Single Story: How Analog Hypertext Facilitates Representation Of Multiple Critical Perspectives In An Art Museum Object Study Gallery, Aimee D. Hunt Jan 2016

Beyond The Single Story: How Analog Hypertext Facilitates Representation Of Multiple Critical Perspectives In An Art Museum Object Study Gallery, Aimee D. Hunt

Theses and Dissertations

This project utilized a form of arts based educational research described as analog hypertext to develop interpretative material representing multiple critical, theoretical, and disciplinary perspectives on objects in a university art museum’s object study gallery. Drawing on scholars’ recommendations for postcolonial interpretation of non-Western art, the project created a web of information, which simultaneously revealed and critiqued the underlying ideologies and power structures shaping the museum’s display in an effort to change existing interpretive practice. The project developed five color-coded thematic self-guided tours—art as commodity, spiritual practice, technology and cultural evolutionism, mortuary rituals, and postcolonial perspectives—presented to the public as …

A New Species Of Athripsodes From The Southwest Of The Iberian Peninsula (Trichoptera, Leptoceridae), Luis Martín González, Marcos Gonzalez, Jesus Martínez

Turkish Journal of Zoology

A new species of the genus Athripsodes from the Iberian Peninsula is described and illustrated: Athripsodes alentexanus sp. Nov. Adults of the new species are close to those of A. Taounate Dakki and Malicky, 1980 and A. Ygramul Malicky and Lounaci, 1987, but the shape of their inferior appendages provides the most striking distinction between males of these three species.

Marriage By Force? Contestation Over Consent And Coercion In Africa, Annie Bunting, Benjamin N. Lawrance, Richard L. Roberts Jan 2016

Marriage By Force? Contestation Over Consent And Coercion In Africa, Annie Bunting, Benjamin N. Lawrance, Richard L. Roberts

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

With forced marriage, as with so many human rights issues, the sensationalized hides the mundane, and oversimplified popular discourses miss the range of experiences. In sub-Saharan Africa, the relationship between coercion and consent in marriage is a complex one that has changed over time and place, rendering impossible any single interpretation or explanation.

The legal experts, anthropologists, historians, and development workers contributing to Marriage by Force? focus on the role that marriage plays in the mobilization of labor, the accumulation of wealth, and domination versus dependency. They also address the crucial slippage between marriages and other forms of gendered violence, …

Redefining Islamic Identity: Cosmopolitanism In The Theater Of Tawfiq Al-Hakim And Akbar Ahmed, Gaber Abdelghaffar Abdelrahman Hasaneen Jan 2016

Redefining Islamic Identity: Cosmopolitanism In The Theater Of Tawfiq Al-Hakim And Akbar Ahmed, Gaber Abdelghaffar Abdelrahman Hasaneen

Theses and Dissertations

The question whether Islam is compatible with American, or generally “Western,” values has now imposed itself on public debates, gaining more urgency and traction with every tragic act of terrorism committed in the name of Islam. In these debates Islamic identity is usually defined in Orientalist terms. Fundamentalist Muslims reiterate Orientalist concepts of who a Muslim is. Orientalist observers on the one hand, and on the other fundamentalist Muslims have defined Islam as the West’s inimical Other, which has made the so-called clash of civilizations sound inevitable.

I argue that cosmopolitan observers challenge these misrepresentations. Representation, particularly self-representation, of the …

Cruising The Borderlands: Queer Latinx Creating Space In Lowrider Culture, Elisia I. Campos Jan 2016

Cruising The Borderlands: Queer Latinx Creating Space In Lowrider Culture, Elisia I. Campos

Senior Independent Study Theses

This ethnographic and interview-based study explores how queer Latinx lowriders create community through art, such as The Q Sides, an exhibition of photographs by Vero Majano, Kari Orvik, and DJ Brown Amy. Both lowrider culture and the queer Latinx community are marginalized communities that are often silenced, ignored, and not included in historical preservation or well documented. Lowrider culture and the queer Latinx community have largely been explored separately, such as ethnographer Ben Chappell and interdisciplinary scholar Michael Hames-García. My Senior Independent Study project examines the unique intersection of the queer Latinx experience in lowrider culture in the context of …

Citizenship, Belonging, And Political Community In Africa: Dialogues Between Past And Present, Emma Hunter Jan 2016

Citizenship, Belonging, And Political Community In Africa: Dialogues Between Past And Present, Emma Hunter

Ohio University Press Open Access Books

Africa, it is often said, is suffering from a crisis of citizenship. At the heart of the contemporary debates this apparent crisis has provoked lie dynamic relations between the present and the past, between political theory and political practice, and between legal categories and lived experience. Yet studies of citizenship in Africa have often tended to foreshorten historical time and privilege the present at the expense of the deeper past.

Citizenship, Belonging, and Political Community in Africa provides a critical reflection on citizenship in Africa by bringing together scholars working with very different case studies and with very different understandings …

Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel Jan 2016

Economics Of The Firm: Identifying Factors Affecting The Performance Of Agribusiness Corporations, Casey Engel

Research Papers

This paper is about identifying the factors that affect firm performance. Many economists have attempted to explain how to define an economy based off of many different aspects, but the focus of this paper is to find out what factors affect the performance of a company. This paper discusses different economic theories, and research which is related to the topic. Then I show a few factors that I found in my research regarding how a firm performs, and finish by interpreting and discussing those factors.

Nature As Spiritual Lived Experience: How Five Christian Theologians Encounter The Spirit In And Through The Natural World, Brad A. Martell Jan 2016

Nature As Spiritual Lived Experience: How Five Christian Theologians Encounter The Spirit In And Through The Natural World, Brad A. Martell

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

This qualitative study explored five Western Christian theologians’ religious lived experience of God’s Spirit in and through Nature. The hermeneutic phenomenological research method was utilized. Rich descriptions of lived experience were collected through 60-90 minute long phenomenological interviews which were recorded and transcribed verbatim into a text for analysis. Analysis included repeated readings of the text, identification of themes, and validation and/or correction of themes. Synthesis looked at the research as a whole and established implications and applications for Christian theology, particularly ecotheology. The study contributes to the literature of phenomenology and theology, calls for a place for lived experience …

The Deserving Patient: Blame, Dependency, And Impairment In Discourses Of Chronic Pain And Opioid Use, Maureen Nickerson Jan 2016

The Deserving Patient: Blame, Dependency, And Impairment In Discourses Of Chronic Pain And Opioid Use, Maureen Nickerson

Antioch University Dissertations & Theses

Negative stereotypes about people with chronic pain pose a barrier in the delivery of care; contribute to worsening symptoms of physical and psychological distress; and play a role in policy decisions that adversely affect patients and providers. Pain-care seekers may be accused of malingering, laziness, mental aberration, attention seeking, and drug seeking. The propagation of stigmatizing attitudes was explored in this Critical Discourse Analysis of online-reader-comments responding to a series of pain-care policy articles published by a large metropolitan newspaper. Results suggest that framing pain patients as legitimate and deserving can inadvertently reproduce the inequities advocates seek to redress. Ascriptions …

Gender Estimation From Fingerprints Using Dwt And Entropy, Sneha Nagabhyru Jan 2016

Gender Estimation From Fingerprints Using Dwt And Entropy, Sneha Nagabhyru

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)

Gender estimation from fingerprints have wide range of applications, especially in the field of forensics where identifying the gender of a criminal can reduce the list of suspects significantly. Although there have been quite a few research papers in the field of gender estimation from fingerprints most of those experiments used a lot of features but were only able to achieve poor classification results. That being the motivation behind the study we successfully proposed two different approaches for gender estimation from fingerprints and achieved high classification accuracy.;In this study we have developed two different approaches for gender estimation from fingerprints. …

Stories Of Smartness And Whiteness In School Pictures And Yearbooks, Eric Ruiz Bybee Jan 2016

Stories Of Smartness And Whiteness In School Pictures And Yearbooks, Eric Ruiz Bybee

Faculty Publications

This article explores the way that discourses of smartness and whiteness are produced and reproduced in schooling. Using an approach grounded in narra- tive research, I explore the convergences and contradictions between my own educational autobiography and the representations of schooling found in my school pictures and yearbooks. In my analysis, I argue that white supremacy played an important role in the construction of my own story of smartness throughout my primary and secondary schooling experiences. I also argue that yearbooks form powerful “artifacts of smartness” (Hatt, 2011, p. 448) that can be used to interpret and interrogate personal experiences …

Bermain-Main Dengan Kebenaran Sejarah: Kontestasi Kedudukan Dan Produksi Sosial Narasi Awal Mula, Geger Riyanto

Antropologi Indonesia

In common understanding, truth is inseparable from plausibility. This particular notion had influenced a strand of thinking in anthropology as well. This is evident from the inclination of some notable scholars to draw parallel comparisons between myth-making and scientific inquiry or depict their subject as a rational being predisposed toward overcoming contradictions. Reflecting on the myths of origin of the Butonese people in Seram Island and the notion of Indonesia as ancient civilization, I would like to propose that in social context the foundation of historical truths is never simply their coherence or plausibility but also their benefit in exalting …

Darek And Rantau: An Identity Through Diglossia, Hafiz Awlia Ramadhan Jan 2016

Darek And Rantau: An Identity Through Diglossia, Hafiz Awlia Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

Through language, conceptions of self and the cultural knowledge of a society can be understood as interaction takes place. Observations and in-depth interviews were conducted to get descriptive results to explain the emic point of view about the dialects used and the dialects of other groups of people. The data was then analyzed with relevant theory and concepts, to get an understanding of the positions of dialects in communication events. By applying their cultural knowledge, peoples of Darek and Rantau, sub-groups in the larger Minangkabau ethnic group, in several contexts use dialects as indicators of another person’s identity. The difference …

Dinamika Pisang (Filipina-Sangihe) Di Perbatasan Indonesia-Filipina, Pristiwanto - Jan 2016

Dinamika Pisang (Filipina-Sangihe) Di Perbatasan Indonesia-Filipina, Pristiwanto -

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesia citizens, who are resident in the southern Philippines is estimated at 8,000 inhabitants. They are commonly known as Pisang, an abbreviation of the Philippines-Sangihe or residents who have “blood ties” with Sangihe (Indonesia) which then had settled in the Philippines. In fact, their Philippine area residence does not become a barrier for the Pisang to remain in a relationship of kinship with the Indonesian Sangihe, through cross-border activity. This reality makes the issue of mobility become important because they do activities on the territory of two nation-states. The Pisang do trade, family visits and political activities even activities that …

Language, Thought, And Social Awareness: A Preliminary Anthropological Linguistic Investigation Of Time And Space In The Bima Language, Kamaludin Yusra

Antropologi Indonesia

The framework is developed from various concepts of linguistic relativity particularly temporal and spatial deictic systems. Data were introspectively collected from the Bima native speakers selected based on dialectal variation, topography, and political geography and descriptively analyzed by identifying, classifying, describing and explaining the connection between various linguistic forms and spatio-temporal dimensions and social consciousness. The study finds that the concept of time in the language is not only semantically realized in adverbs of time but also morphologically represented in linguistic markers …

Youth Personhood @Crossroad: A Virtual Ethnography Of An Asymmetrical Relation Between Digital Natives And Digital Immigrants In Indonesia, Sofyan Ansori, Febrian -, Hafiz A. Ramadhan

Antropologi Indonesia

Indonesian youth has developed into the largest internet user in this country. The development of technology drives the digital natives toward new challenges in identity attainment (personhood). It is common for young people to have a “storm and stress” phase in their life which is part of their identity attainment as one of the major and basic tasks of youth daily life. However, along with youth behavior in using internet, a generational problem emerges. The problematic behavior pattern includes taking dangerous selfies, sexting, cyberbullying, and promoting the radical activism. Through a research conducted with online observation and virtual ethnography, we …

Menjadi "Positive Deviant" Di Antara Yang Positif (Kajian Deskriptif Tentang Anak Dengan Hiv/Aids), Johanna Debora Imelda, Annisah -

Antropologi Indonesia

In Indonesia, since 1987, cases of children with HIV/AIDS (CLWHA) have increased. Several studies reveal that CLHWA cannot live up to the age of 5 years without ARV treatment. However, data from Ministry of Health and NGO’s documentation show a different fact. Some CLWHA can live longer than the others although they have not started the antiretroviral treatment yet. In social science, there is an approach called “Positive Deviance”. This study examines how CLWHA live as Positive Deviant and how families and social systems support them through their lives. This study used a qualitative approach using FGD and in-depth interviews for …

This study found that there were particular internal factor problems of the teenage mother. Besides being hampered by the administration because of their age, young mothers became vulnerable because of their immature psychological and emotional aspects. In the midst of unsupportive social and cultural conditions, teenage mothers altered to the weaker position. Whereas the growth and development of …
