Latino And Latin American Families, Mary Ann Powell, Christina Maria Wislon
Latino And Latin American Families, Mary Ann Powell, Christina Maria Wislon
Journal of Latino/Latin American Studies (JOLLAS)
In this special issue of The Journal of Latino-Latin American Studies, we enrich our understanding of the issues that particularly affect Latino/Latin American families in the United States. How do these families face barriers and yet come out with improved lives? The topics of the six intriguing papers in this issue appear on the surface to vary dramatically from one another, but a common thread is woven throughout. We briefly describe how the papers fit into the overall theme here, and provide individual detail on each article below.

Our Sound Our Silence: Self Care In Student Of Color Activism, Alexa S. Muniz
Scripps Senior Theses
Our Sound Our Silence is a performative documentary about student of color activists at Scripps College. This video project attempts to highlight the fatigue, emotional, mental, and physical exhaustion these students experience from having to work within the institution to advocate for their survival. This video project also attempts to speak to the importance of self-care for students of color and especially for those involved in activism and organizing on campus. I wanted to use the creation of this video as a means of self-care and process of healing for myself, my collaborators, and my community.
William Morris And Diego Rivera: The Pursuit Of Art For The People, Heidi S. Shugg
William Morris And Diego Rivera: The Pursuit Of Art For The People, Heidi S. Shugg
Master of Liberal Studies Theses
The purpose of this thesis is to draw parallels between the art and philosophy of William Morris (1834-1896) and Diego Rivera (1886-1957). Morris drew on his interest in gothic art and architecture, his love of Romantic literature, and his commitment to social reform, to articulate the aesthetic and social vision of the Arts and Crafts Movement in England. Examples of Morris’s writings and his handicraft in the form of wallpapers, books, furniture, and the Red House will be examined. Diego Rivera was a Mexican painter and socialist activist perhaps best known for his murals depicting the working class. Several of …

Palatable Help: Experiences Of Food Insecurity In A Suburban Environment, Tannya L. Forcone
Palatable Help: Experiences Of Food Insecurity In A Suburban Environment, Tannya L. Forcone
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Food insecurity is a ubiquitous and stigmatized, equal-opportunity threat to community health. Irregular access to nutritious foods impacts both physical and emotional well-being. Food insecurity is burgeoning in the suburbs. Economic hardships of the recession have impacted families that were previously middle class, and in this environment, food insecurity is often hidden and unacknowledged with unique challenges and coping strategies. This ethnographic study in the Midwestern U.S. examines the intersection of poverty and shame associated with diminished household resources. The research considers solutions and applications beyond food provisioning that can reverse negative emotional impact on individuals while stabilizing the community.
Rebellious Pedagogy And Practice, Anthony V. Alfieri
Rebellious Pedagogy And Practice, Anthony V. Alfieri
Articles
Gerald Lopez's ground breaking book, Rebellious Lawyering: One Chicano's Vision of Progressive Law Practice, introduced new critical pathways and perspectives for clinical educators to better understand and enhance their advocacy, teaching, and scholarship. Indeed, Lopez's interdisciplinary investigation of the local, sociocultural context of the lawyering process produced a marked shift in both the pedagogy and the practice of public interest law, particularly civil rights and poverty law. A quarter century after its publication, Rebellious Lawyering stands out not only for its contextual critique of lawyering theory and practice, but also for its multifaceted integration of law, cultural studies, race …
Values, Questions, And Methods In Intellectual Property, Jeremy N. Sheff
Values, Questions, And Methods In Intellectual Property, Jeremy N. Sheff
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Intellectual property (“IP”) scholarship has a unique distinction among legal academic disciplines: some of its practitioners question whether the subject of their study ought to exist. We should pause to consider how remarkable this is. Constitutional law scholars usually do not question whether political communities should be governed by constitutions. Criminal law scholars generally accept that the state ought to be able to define and punish crimes. Contract law scholars do not question that some promises should be enforceable in court. To be sure, in each of these disciplines there are hotly debated questions over the appropriate scope and …
Tricking For Change: Establishing The Literary Trickster In The Western Tradition, Christopher Michael Stuart
Tricking For Change: Establishing The Literary Trickster In The Western Tradition, Christopher Michael Stuart
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
This thesis proposes a new category for literary analysis called the literary trickster figure. Over the last few centuries, the trickster figure has been reduced from a cultural hero to a dubious character. If we trace the trickster’s western roots back to Hermes, Mercury, and Loki and take global trickster scholarship into consideration, criteria can be established and the role of the literary trickster can be assessed. The literary trickster’s role is to undermine the established order (social and political hierarchies), create disorder and bring awareness to systemic issues in order to bring about change. Once the literary trickster category …
Data-Driven Elections And Political Parties In Canada: Privacy Implications, Privacy Policies And Privacy Obligations, Colin J. Bennett
Data-Driven Elections And Political Parties In Canada: Privacy Implications, Privacy Policies And Privacy Obligations, Colin J. Bennett
Canadian Journal of Law and Technology
In light of the revelations concerning Cambridge Analytica, we are now in an era of heightened publicity and concern about the role of voter analytics in elections. Parties in Canada need to enhance their privacy management practices and commit to complying with national privacy principles in all their operations. As shown in this article’s comparative analysis of the privacy policies of federal and provincial political parties in Canada, policies are often difficult to find, unclear, and, with a couple of exceptions, do not address all the privacy principles. Accountability and complaints mechanisms are often not clearly publicized, and many are …
Infinity Goes On Trial: Sanism, Pretextuality, And The Representation Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin
Infinity Goes On Trial: Sanism, Pretextuality, And The Representation Of Defendants With Mental Disabilities, Michael L. Perlin
Articles & Chapters
This paper, presented to the mid-winter meeting of the National Association of Criminal Defense Lawyers (Austin, TX, 2/18/16), explains why it is essential for lawyers representing criminal defendants with mental disabilities to understand the meanings and contexts of sanism - a largely invisible and largely socially acceptable irrational prejudice of the same quality and character of other irrational prejudices that cause (and are reflected in) prevailing social attitudes of racism, sexism, homophobia, and ethnic bigotry - and pretextuality - the means by which courts regularly accept (either implicitly or explicitly) testimonial dishonesty, countenance liberty deprivations in disingenuous ways that bear …

We Built It And They Did Not Come: Using Governance Theory In The Fight For Food Justice In Low-Income Communities Of Color, Deborah N. Archer, Tamara Belinfanti
Articles & Chapters
Food deserts and food insecurity have received considerable attention from various stakeholders, such as state and local governments, community organizations, and private sector institutions. These stakeholders have sought to overcome food insecurity by turning food deserts into oases by providing “access” to fresh, healthy food. However, many of their solutions—building supermarkets and sponsoring farmers markets—have missed the mark. Residents of food deserts did not flock to grocery stores to purchase fruits andvegetables. As a result, many stakeholders blame the residents of food deserts for their own predicament, lamenting, to paraphrase Field of Dreams, “we built it but they did not …

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture
[First paragraph]
I want to begin by discussing archives that are actually on fire. On August 25, 1992, the National and University Library of Bosnia-Herzegovina in Sarajevo was targeted by Serb nationalist forces, shelled, and set ablaze. Over three days, more than two million volumes of books, archival records, manuscripts, newspapers, maps, and journals were burned to a crisp, despite brave attempts by the people of Sarajevo to rescue them. As librarian Kemal Bakarsic described,
"The fire lasted into the next day. The sun was obscured by the smoke of books, and all over the city sheets of burned paper, …
Predictability Of Delinquency Through Psychosocial And Environmental Variables Across Three Generational Status Groups, Margaret Frances Sabia
Predictability Of Delinquency Through Psychosocial And Environmental Variables Across Three Generational Status Groups, Margaret Frances Sabia
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
Issues such as the rapid growth of the immigrant youth population and delinquency among adolescents generate public safety concerns among the U.S. population. However, delinquency intervention strategies for immigrant youth in the United States remain scant, which is problematic because these youth face acculturative challenges that increase their risk for maladaptive outcomes. This quantitative, cross-sectional study addressed a research gap regarding the differential influence of risk factors in predicting delinquency across 3 generational statuses. The theoretical framework guiding the study consisted of acculturation theory, the immigrant paradox, and differential association theory. Two research questions were evaluated using a stratified random …
Is Assisted Procreation An Lgbt Right?, Michael Boucai
Is Assisted Procreation An Lgbt Right?, Michael Boucai
Journal Articles
A movement long identified with the notion that “love makes a family” today flirts dangerously with the dogma that “blood is thicker than water.” Biogeneticism, an ideology that favors biological modes of kinship and genetic conceptions of identity, informs many LGBT individuals’ choices about why and how to have children. In turn this ideology marks two troubling features of political efforts to facilitate LGBT parenthood: first, the markedly different understandings of equality — full versus formal, lived versus legal — that guide movement approaches to assisted procreation and adoption, respectively; and second, invocations of a fundamental “right to procreate” that …
Human Shields And Redistribution Of Prey Species Complicate The Utility Of Protected Areas As Ecological Baselines, Wesley Sarmento
Human Shields And Redistribution Of Prey Species Complicate The Utility Of Protected Areas As Ecological Baselines, Wesley Sarmento
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
A key goal of protected areas is the conservation of biodiversity, an aim that garners increasing public support through positive experiences. Increasing visitation, however, can come at the cost of reduced ecological integrity. A fundamental conundrum is that if parks are to serve as our most pristine places, then we must understand how our presence alters species interactions. Species redistributing closer to people is of growing management concern both in and out of national parks because of 1) human safety, 2) animal health, and 3) ecological consequences. Across parks drivers of distributional change are often dissimilar, and include movement to …
Cyber-Victimization And Delinquency: A General Strain Perspective, Ian D. Greenwood
Cyber-Victimization And Delinquency: A General Strain Perspective, Ian D. Greenwood
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
This study examines juvenile delinquency and cyber-victimization from a general strain perspective. General strain theory provides a model where strain is experienced through the (1) loss of something valued, (2) the presentation of noxious stimuli, or (3) the inability to achieve valued goals. As a coping mechanism for strain, some juveniles react through criminal or delinquent behavior. This thesis predicts that cyber-victimization increases the likelihood of physical fighting, weapon-carrying, and truancy at school. Using the 2013 National Crime Victimization Survey: School Crime Supplement, the hypotheses are analyzed using multivariate logistic regression models that include other known correlates of delinquency. Marginal …
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Eukaryotic Dna Extraction From Burial Soil Samples, Ariane Thomas
An Evaluation Of The Effectiveness Of Eukaryotic Dna Extraction From Burial Soil Samples, Ariane Thomas
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
DNA is a valuable resource as a unique identifier of physical characteristics at both the population and individual levels. Due to a variety of factors that contribute to genetic decay, forensic and bioarchaeological investigators have limited outlets in which to extract viable DNA after most of a body’s organic materials have fully decomposed. This preliminary research focused on extracting DNA from the soil surrounding buried Sus scrofa domesticus cadavers to confirm the presence of viable and analyzable DNA. After a decomposition period of five months in Montana, soils were collected at incremental distances above the remains and sequenced to identify …
School Supports For Lgbtq Students: Counteracting The Dangers Of The Closet, Lauri Mae Lindquist
School Supports For Lgbtq Students: Counteracting The Dangers Of The Closet, Lauri Mae Lindquist
Graduate Student Theses, Dissertations, & Professional Papers
Researchers have reported that being proud and open about one’s sexual and/or gender identity is related to fewer negative psychological outcomes. However, this process of identity development is often impeded by environmental factors, such as minority stress. Through his minority stress hypothesis, Meyer (2003) suggests that suggests that living in a society that is intolerant of central features of the self (e.g., sexual orientation and gender identity) increases the level of stress in individuals with minority statuses. These environmental stressors are consistently shown by research to account for the disproportionate amount of negative psychological and academic outcomes experienced by sexual …
Law And Economics: Contemporary Approaches, Martha T. Mccluskey, Frank A. Pasquale Iii, Jennifer Taub
Law And Economics: Contemporary Approaches, Martha T. Mccluskey, Frank A. Pasquale Iii, Jennifer Taub
Journal Articles
A relatively narrow version of Law and Economics has dominated public policy for several decades. This school of thought has mainly focused on neoclassical microeconomics. It fails to recognize the pluralism of contemporary economics in general, and the relevance of macroeconomics in particular. So-called “market forces” are thoroughly intertwined with law and cannot be understood without some reference to history, sociology, psychology, and other social sciences. It is time for legal scholars to develop a law and economics curriculum that catches up with the advance of economics as a discipline.
The urgent challenges of the 21st Century also call for …

A Systematic Review: Effects Of Psychosocial Interventions On Outcomes In Refugee Adolescents Resettled In The Us, Canada, And The Uk, Lauren Herr, Halle Kurtz
Williams Honors College, Honors Research Projects
Abstract
Problem: The number of refugee and displaced people in the United States (US) increases annually. Because of trauma in countries of origin, they may have mental health problems and disrupted adjustments during resettlement, resulting in problems with refugee adolescents and their quality of life, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and overall well-being.
Purpose: To describe and appraise evidence about the effects of psychosocial interventions in refugee adolescents resettled in the US.
Methods: Studies from US, Canada, and the United Kingdom (UK) were identified in four databases. Inclusion criteria included: primary studies, children and/or adolescents, psychosocial health interventions, and refugees.

As LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender) community organizing becomes increasingly common internationally, backlash also increased in frequency. This research examines the observed increase in violence against the Ugandan LGBT people from 2006-2014 as well as how this violence was exacerbated by international pressures in response to HIV/AIDS and local actors. This research also focuses on how those pressures from international agents affected the successes of the Ugandan feminist movement.

To Honor Our Past: Historical Research, Library History And The Historiographical Imperative: Conceptual Reflections And Exploratory Observations, Jean-Pierre V. M. Hérubel
Libraries Faculty and Staff Scholarship and Research
This exploratory discussion considers history of libraries, in its broadest context; moreover, it frames the entire enterprise of pursuing history as it relates to LIS in the context of doing history and of doing history vis-à-vis LIS. Is it valuable intellectually for LIS professionals to consider their own history, writing historically oriented research, and what is the nature of this research within the professionalization of LIS itself as both practice and discipline? Necessarily conceptual and offering theoretical insight, this discussion perforce tenders the idea that historiographical innovations and other disciplinary approaches and perspectives can invigorate library history beyond its current …
The Public Sharing And Private Consumption Of Celebrity Gossip Through The Motherhood Role, Shawne Katherine Duperon
The Public Sharing And Private Consumption Of Celebrity Gossip Through The Motherhood Role, Shawne Katherine Duperon
Wayne State University Dissertations
Research has demonstrated that gossip meets many social and individual needs and serves several functions, often conflicting in the literature. The current study focused on examining the experiences of mothers as they publicly share and privately consume celebrity gossip to better understand celebrity gossip's functions. Motherhood is a demanding role filled with uncertainty and information seeking, as mothers seek to understand what constitutes a "good mother." Given that mothers may selectively seek and expose themselves to content to gain information, reduce uncertainty and to find validation they are a "good mother," this study revealed that participation in celebrity gossip plays …
A Genesis Of Conflict: The Zero-Sum Mindset, Jonathan R. Cohen
A Genesis Of Conflict: The Zero-Sum Mindset, Jonathan R. Cohen
Cardozo Journal of Conflict Resolution
Parties in conflict often operate under the assumption that for one party to win, the other party must lose. This concept, known as the "zero-sum mindset, " can lead to undesirable results, both because it can make disputes harder to resolve and because people holding such beliefs are more likely to get into conflicts to begin with. Over the past several decades, legal educators specializing in dispute resolution have worked hard to challenge that mindset. This task is not simple, for framing conflict in zero-sum terms has very deep cultural roots tracing back at least to the Biblical stories in …
Oldowan Hominin Behavior And Ecology At Kanjera South, Kenya, Thomas W. Plummer, Laura C. Bishop
Oldowan Hominin Behavior And Ecology At Kanjera South, Kenya, Thomas W. Plummer, Laura C. Bishop
Publications and Research
The Early Stone Age archaeological record does not become persistent and widespread until approximately 2.0-1.7 million years ago, when Oldowan sites spread across Africa and ultimately into Eurasia. However, good records of hominin behavior from this important time interval are uncommon. Here we describe recent findings from the two million year old Oldowan site of Kanjera South, on the Homa Peninsula of southwestern Kenya. Kanjera South is the oldest Oldowan site with large assemblages of stone artifacts and well-preserved archaeological fauna. Our research indicates that hominin activities were situated in an open habitat within a grassland dominated ecosystem, the first …
