A Live Finding Aid Of Archival Ethnographies, Janet Ceja Alcalá Jan 2016

A Live Finding Aid Of Archival Ethnographies, Janet Ceja Alcalá

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

This literature review of archival ethnographies gives an overview of the methodology developments since the early 2000s. Its format renders homage to one of the most successful forms of archival representation: the finding aid. The template of a finding aid is used with a hyperlinked twist to render a live inventory of ethno-archival publications. Organized into "series levels," a collection of publications that use archival ethnography are identified based on four major themes: "Classical Archival Ethnography," "Informal Records," Archival Ethnography Along the Archival Grain," and "Constructing Archives." The finding aid on archival ethnographies should be useful for researchers interested in …

To Show Them And To Share Them: Maureen Cummins, Archives, And Book Arts, Katherine M. Crowe, Maureen Cummins

Reconstruction: Studies in Contemporary Culture

The University of Denver (DU) Special Collections and Archives has been building its Fine Press and Artists' Books Collection since 2004, largely in collaboration with faculty from academic departments in the arts and humanities. In 2013, the University Libraries hosted artist Maureen Cummins for a lecture about her work as an artist. Afterward, Maureen agreed to have a conversation with Curator Kate Crowe about her process for incorporating both archival and found materials into her art. The two discussed Maureen's artistic beginnings, her transition to working as and thinking of herself as a fine artist, and her thoughts on the …

The Teshik-Tash Child: Evolutionary Montage During The Middle Paleolithic, Nirosh Moodley, Alesha Pettit Jan 2016

The Teshik-Tash Child: Evolutionary Montage During The Middle Paleolithic, Nirosh Moodley, Alesha Pettit

AANAPISI Poster Presentations

Discovered in 1938 in the Bajsun district of southern Uzbekistan, Teshik-Tash 1 represents a juvenile male hominin, aged between nine and eleven years old. He was classified as Homo neanderthalensis. Two pertinent characteristics of the find’s in situ context provided the backdrop for this classification. Firstly, the Teshik-Tash child was buried with associated grave goods surrounded by a Middle Paleolithic assemblage which has been described as “Mousterian-like” (Glantz et al, 2009: 45). Secondly, the very location of this find was the furthest eastern extent of hominin discoveries outside of the Levant. Recent research, however, challenges this boundary by questioning …

The Last Indian War: Reassessing The Legacy Of American Indian Boarding Schools And The Emergence Of Pan-Indian Identity, Abigail M. Gibson Jan 2016

The Last Indian War: Reassessing The Legacy Of American Indian Boarding Schools And The Emergence Of Pan-Indian Identity, Abigail M. Gibson

Global Tides

The purpose of this research is to reexamine the legacy of federally-maintained boarding schools for American Indian children, particularly in regards to its strong connections to the emergence of Pan-Indian identity during the latter half of the twentieth century. The schools have long retained a reputation of one of the most poignant examples of cultural imperialism in history of the United States. The goal of this paper is not to deny the horrors associated with the American Indian boarding school system, but to emphasize the important and ultimately positive outcome of the development of an American Indian identity that transcends …
