Excavations At Vista Del Valle, A Viejo Period Site Of The Casas Grandes Cultural Tradition In Chihuahua, Mexico, Michael T. Searcy, Todd Pitezel

Faculty Publications

In the summer of 2015 we conducted excavations at a site located along the Palanganas River, just south of the Casas Grandes River Valley in northwestern Chihuahua, Mexico. This represents the first excavation of a Viejo Period site (A.D. 700–1200) in this vicinity since the 1960s. We discovered remnants of at least five structures, and fully excavated three. This paper reports our findings and compares them to previous work carried out in the region.

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton Jan 2016

A Study Of The Fepac Accredited Graduate Forensic Science Programs' Curricula, Catherine Genice Rushton

Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

The National Institute of Justice (1999) and the National Academy of Sciences (2009) recommended that forensic science training shift from on-the-job training to formal education. However, the reports cited inconsistencies in the curricula of the forensic science degree programs as an impediment to this. The Forensic Science Education Programs Accreditation Commission (FEPAC) Standards were created to address this issue; however, no studies have been conducted to determine how the accreditation standards have been implemented by the FEPAC accredited graduate programs. This study evaluated the self-study responses (n=11) and website information (n=17) specific to FEPAC’s Graduate Curriculum Standards to determine how …

Leaked Memo To West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen From Major Consuelo Antoinette Martinez Regarding The "Raised Black Female Fist" Old Corps Photograph Incident, Yxta Maya Murray Jan 2016

Leaked Memo To West Point Superintendent Lt. Gen. Robert Caslen From Major Consuelo Antoinette Martinez Regarding The "Raised Black Female Fist" Old Corps Photograph Incident, Yxta Maya Murray

Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice

This satire responds to the recent United States Military Academy ("USMA" or "West Point') Investigation sixteen African American female cadets who took a photograph of themselves holding up their fists. This work of legal analysis and of the imagination takes the form of an investigatory memo written by afictional Latina West Point official to the (very real) West Point Superintendent Lieutenant General Robert Caslen. In it, I study the legal underpinnings for the investigation, which center on certain Department ofDefense regulations forbidding political activity on the part of military service members. I reveal the race and gender absurdity that cuts …

Derrida, Husserl, And The Problem Of Prior Sense, Ralph Shain Jan 2016

Derrida, Husserl, And The Problem Of Prior Sense, Ralph Shain

College of Humanities and Public Affairs

In his introduction to Husserl's "Origin of Geometry", Derrida makes several claims for the superiority of Husserl's philosophy over Kant's. The main claim of superiority is Husserl's grounding of transcendental historicity and transcendental intersubjectivity in concrete experience. For Kant, Derrida points out, the truth of geometry is already constituted, and thus must be extrinsic to all history. But for Husserl, every 'objectivity' has a history, including geometrical objectivities, and these objectivities did not pre-exist the originary intuitive act. I will explore these claims, as they reach into the heart of issues concerning time and temporality. First, I will consider Derrida's …

Transnational Support And Legal Education Reform In Developing Countries: Findings And Lessons From Burma/Myanmar, Jonathan Liljeblad Jan 2016

Transnational Support And Legal Education Reform In Developing Countries: Findings And Lessons From Burma/Myanmar, Jonathan Liljeblad

Loyola University Chicago International Law Review

Myanmar's current transition involves a concerted international effort to promote the rule of law. Legal education is integral to promoting the rule of law, and so calls for development aid that works to improve a country's legal education system. The nature of development aid, however, calls for some analysis of its efficacy. This paper contributes to this call by taking as a case study the state of transnational aid efforts to improve legal education in Burma/Myanmar, and finds issues that threaten the efficacy of international aid efforts to reform legal education in developing countries. The analysis concludes with recommendations to …

Dining With The Cyborgs: Disembodied Consumption And The Rhetoric Of Food Media In The Digital Age, Maggie Cotto Jan 2016

Dining With The Cyborgs: Disembodied Consumption And The Rhetoric Of Food Media In The Digital Age, Maggie Cotto

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This project explores digital media productions based specifically on food and cooking in order to demonstrate that new communication technologies are increasingly incorporating all five of the bodily senses. In doing so, they contribute significantly to the emergence of new ideological apparatuses appropriate for a global community. These apparatuses – including the formation of a posthumanist subject, the use of technology to support embodied cognition, and the establishment of entertainment as an ideological institution – have become the harbingers of a rhetorical evolution. Based on the work of Gregory Ulmer, along with Jacques Derrida, N. Katherine Hayles, Donna Haraway, and …

Kind Girls, Evil Sisters, And Wise Women: Coded Gender Discourse In Literary Fairy Tales By German Women In The 19th Century, Julie Koehler Jan 2016

Kind Girls, Evil Sisters, And Wise Women: Coded Gender Discourse In Literary Fairy Tales By German Women In The 19th Century, Julie Koehler

Wayne State University Dissertations

This dissertation is an analysis of fairy tales by German women in late eighteenth and nineteenth century. Although hundreds of women published fairy tales in Germany in the nineteenth century, they remain absent from current scholarship. Recent work by scholars Shawn Jarvis and Jeannine Blackwell have brought these fairy tales back into print, but there remains very little critical work on them. This dissertation takes the focus of retellings of the Kind and Unkind Girls tale type, also known as “Frau Holle.” At first glance, the women’s variants depict modest, passive, and hardworking Kind Girls who are very similar to …

Proceedings Of Drs2016 International Conference, Vol. 5: Future–Focused Thinking, Peter Lloyd, Erik Bohemia

DRS Conference Volumes

The underlying premise was that 50 years of design research has provided us with a sound understanding of design and a solid foundation upon which to build. The interesting questions, then, appeared to us as not so much how we do more of the same – though that of course has its place – but in how we use what we now know. Hence the three broad questions that the papers in these conference proceedings respond to: How can design research help frame and address the societal problems that face us? How can design research be a creative and active …

Images Of History: Kant, Benjamin, Freedom, And The Human Subject, Richard Thomas Eldridge Jan 2016

Images Of History: Kant, Benjamin, Freedom, And The Human Subject, Richard Thomas Eldridge

Philosophy Faculty Works

Developing work in the theories of action and explanation, Eldridge argues that moral and political philosophers require accounts of what is historically possible, while historians require rough philosophical understandings of ideals that merit reasonable endorsement. Both Immanuel Kant and Walter Benjamin recognize this fact. Each sees a special place for religious consciousness and critical practice in the articulation and revision of ideals that are to have cultural effect, but they differ sharply in the forms of religious-philosophical understanding, cultural criticism, and political practice that they favor. Kant defends a liberal, reformist, Protestant stance, emphasizing the importance of liberty, individual rights, …

The Flâneur In Paris And Mexico City: Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera’S Transnational Search For Modern Beauty, Kelly Comfort Jan 2016

The Flâneur In Paris And Mexico City: Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera’S Transnational Search For Modern Beauty, Kelly Comfort

Decimonónica

In their introductory chapter to Geomodernisms: Race, Modernism, Modernity, Laura Doyle and Laura Winkiel examine the relevance of “place, proximity, [and] position” to diverse modernist discourses and invite a “dialogue about ‘placedness’” to constitute their proposed rethinking of modernist studies (1). By breaking modernism “open” into something they call “geomodernisms,” Doyle and Winkiel advocate for “a locational approach to modernisms’ engagement with cultural and political discourses of global modernity” (3). I take up their concern with literary works that display “a self- consciousness about positionality” in the present analysis of two chronicles by Mexican modernista author Manuel Gutiérrez Nájera …

Publications and Research

Over the past twenty years our understanding of the Middle Preclassic (900–300 BCE) period has become much clearer through archaeological investigations at a number of sites located in the Upper Belize River Valley region of the eastern Maya Lowlands. While the picture of Middle Preclassic Maya life, including their material culture, has sharpened, there are aspects that remain uninvestigated. One artifact type, identified as greenstone triangulates, has been found at several Belize Valley sites and in a variety of contexts. Although a number of these multifaceted, polished groundstone items have been recovered, little research has focused on their distribution and …

Anthropology and Museum Studies Faculty Scholarship

Variation in the availability and distribution of food resources is a strong selective pressure on wild primates. We explored variation in Tibetan macaque gut microbiota composition during winter and spring seasons. Our results showed that gut microbial composition and diversity varied by season. In winter, the genus Succinivibrio, which promotes the digestion of cellulose and hemicellulose, was significantly increased. In spring, the abundance of the genus Prevotella, which is associated with digestion of carbohydrates and simple sugars, was significantly increased. PICRUSt analysis revealed that the predicted metagenomes related to the glycan biosynthesis and metabolic pathway was significantly increased in winter …

Qualitative And Quantitative Regulation Of The Leptin Gene In Vivo, Yi-Hsueh Lu Jan 2016

Qualitative And Quantitative Regulation Of The Leptin Gene In Vivo, Yi-Hsueh Lu

Student Theses and Dissertations

The high prevalence of obesity is a major public health concern worldwide. Conventional strategies have failed to provide solid solutions, greater than 90% of individuals who lost weight by diet and exercise eventually regained the weight (Arner and Spalding, 2010a). As such, biological factors including genetic contributions have become the research focus on pathogenesis of obesity and the target of effective disease control. Central to energy homeostasis is the mechanism by which animals regulate and/or response to fluctuation in energy intake and output. Adipose tissues participate in metabolic regulation by serving as an energy store and by secreting adipokines such …

Environmental Leadership: Exploring Environmental Dissonance Involving Natural Resource Consumption And Ecosystem Degradation, Thomas L. Tochterman Jan 2016

Environmental Leadership: Exploring Environmental Dissonance Involving Natural Resource Consumption And Ecosystem Degradation, Thomas L. Tochterman

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

As the corporate world, communities, and individuals become more globalized and demands on natural resources increase, a new emphasis on environmental leadership including a new pragmatic environmental ethos is needed to meet certain basic human needs of future generations. The research problem addressed in this study was the lack of knowledge concerning how environmental cognitive dissonance influences consumption practices related to inefficient resource utilization and ecosystem degradation. The purpose of this study was to provide an understanding of the breadth and depth of environmental cognitive dissonance among visitors to the Kruger National Park in South Africa. The research questions addressed …

Race, Religion, And Rfra: The Implications Of Burwell V. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. In Employment Discrimination, Hanna Martin Jan 2016

Race, Religion, And Rfra: The Implications Of Burwell V. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc. In Employment Discrimination, Hanna Martin

Cardozo Law Review de•novo

This Note argues that an employer who wishes to discriminate in hiring based on race—despite contrary federal law—can easily state a claim under the federal or a state RFRA. The plaintiff’s prima facie case will be satisfied if its beliefs are sincere, religiously motivated, and substantially burdened by antidiscrimination laws. This Note also argues that even if the government has a compelling interest in preventing discrimination against employees, in light of the Court’s ruling in Hobby Lobby, the RFRA claimants will still be granted an exemption.
