Secondary Analysis Of Morbidity Data From A Rural Haitian Village., Emma Karin Draluck Nov 2016

Secondary Analysis Of Morbidity Data From A Rural Haitian Village., Emma Karin Draluck

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Haiti is the poorest country in the Western Hemisphere with most of the population surviving on $1 per day. Health outcomes among Haitians are poor, with a life expectancy 16 years less than the US. The majority of health research in Haiti has been narrow, focusing on specific issues like tuberculosis, HIV/AIDS, maternal health, and cholera. Unfortunately, this has resulted an incomplete understanding of health in Haiti. This study aims to fill this gap by describing the most common health complaints, how they differ by age, sex, and temporality, and if there are associations between these health issues and environmental …

What Makes A Veteran-Friendly College Or University Campus?, Donald W-R Allen Nov 2016

What Makes A Veteran-Friendly College Or University Campus?, Donald W-R Allen

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The United States Armed Services has produced some of the finest men and women soldiers in history. After their service, some pursue institutions of higher learning to meet the needs of their continued excellence. Some colleges and universities have failed to meet the slightest requirements of the veteran student: understanding, compassion, respect and college credits for military training and experiential learning. The chapters inside this capstone confirms that veterans must be accepted as a very important part of the campus population. When veteran’s complete college and graduate, they have strategically and successfully completed another important undertaking. To look at a …

Seeing The Forest For The Roads: Auto-Tourism And Wilderness Preservation In Mount Hood National Forest, 1913-64, Taylor Elliott Rose Nov 2016

Seeing The Forest For The Roads: Auto-Tourism And Wilderness Preservation In Mount Hood National Forest, 1913-64, Taylor Elliott Rose

Dissertations and Theses

Between 1913 and 1964, automobile roads appeared throughout the Cascade Mountains around Mount Hood, just east of Portland, Oregon. From elaborate scenic highways to primitive dirt trails, each had its own story. Many of them are gone today, decommissioned and decomposing with the rotting understory soil of the forest. However, some remain as the most utilized spaces in Mount Hood National Forest, one of the most popular public land units for recreation in the country, owned and managed by the United States Forest Service. "Seeing the Forest for the Roads" uncovers the history of why roads were built, who planned …

“Sparks Fly ”: Connecting Midwestern Historic Forts Through A Comparative Study Of Gunflints, Jeffrey A. Spanbauer Nov 2016

“Sparks Fly ”: Connecting Midwestern Historic Forts Through A Comparative Study Of Gunflints, Jeffrey A. Spanbauer

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis will outline the temporal changes and choices of colonial powers and individuals as expressed at historic frontier posts in the Midwest between 1683 and 1779 as expressed through their supply and usage of gunflints. Gunflints exist as persistent artifacts at historic sites, and especially so at fortifications like Fort de Chartres, Fort St. Joseph, Fort Michilimackinac and Fort Ouiatenon. These sites exist within the same chronological timeframe, from 1690-1780, and saw occupation by both the French and British, with nearby indigenous groups, and should serve as instructive means to investigate the factors involved in the supply, selection, and …

Husserl’S Concept Of Position-Taking And Second Nature, Alejandro Arango Nov 2016

Husserl’S Concept Of Position-Taking And Second Nature, Alejandro Arango

Philosophy Faculty Scholarship

I argue that Husserl’s concept of position-taking, Stellungnahme, is adequate to understand the idea of second nature as an issue of philosophical anthropology. I claim that the methodological focus must be the living subject that acts and lives among others, and that the notion of second nature must respond to precisely this fundamental active character of subjectivity. The appropriate concept should satisfy two additional desiderata. First, it should be able to develop alongside the biological, psychological, and social individual development. Second, it should be able to underlie the vast diversity of human beings within and across communities. As possible candidates, …

Use Of Drones And Gis To Identify Geoglyphs In The Sihuas Valley, Peru, Felipe Gonzalez-Macqueen Nov 2016

Use Of Drones And Gis To Identify Geoglyphs In The Sihuas Valley, Peru, Felipe Gonzalez-Macqueen

GIS Day

Geoglyphs are anthropogenic features built onto the landscape by either removing a layer from the ground to expose the soil underneath or adding layers on top to create a relief. The most well-known examples of this are in the Nazca Valley, Peru where features can measure up to 400m long and have a variety of shapes. However not all geoglyphs are as big and complex as these, as is the case of the Sihuas Valley, Peru where geoglyphs are smaller and less elaborate in comparison. To identify and map these geoglyphs and other features, we used a combination of satellite …

It's Just One Of Those Gender Role Things: The Woman Does The Shopping, And The Man Fixes The Doors: Irish Advertising Students And Postfeminist Gendered Discourses, Aileen O'Driscoll Nov 2016

It's Just One Of Those Gender Role Things: The Woman Does The Shopping, And The Man Fixes The Doors: Irish Advertising Students And Postfeminist Gendered Discourses, Aileen O'Driscoll

Irish Communication Review

In 2010 the European Commission published a report outlining its official position on ‘Breaking gender stereotypes in Media’ thereby explicitly recognising that advertising’s dissemination of images that depict gender stereotyping works to uphold gender inequalities. In addition, the European Coalition against Media Sexism (WECAMS) has engaged with the European Parliament and the European Advertising Standards Alliance in a bid to open up discussion on the possibility for standardising guidelines aimed at tackling and preventing sexism and gender stereotyping in advertising. Furthermore, over a more than forty-year history feminist media research has consistently pointed to problematic gendered imagery in advertising texts …

Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan Nov 2016

Language Change And Ideology In Irish Radio Advertising, Joan O'Sullivan

Irish Communication Review

This paper examines language ideological change in the Irish context through a longitudinal analysis of accent choice in a corpus of radio ads from 1977, 1987, 1997 and 2007. The analysis is based on Sussex’s (1989) ad components of Action and Comment. The Action component is generally comprised of contextual dialogic interaction and associated with discourses of ‘everyday informal interaction’ while the Comment component, often associated with the slogan of the ad, tends to be monologic and decontextualised and is associated with discourses of ‘power and authority’ (Lee, 1992). The use of standard British English accent features, particularly in …

Interfaith-Cross-Cultural Improvisation: Music And Meaning Across Boundaries Of Faith And Culture, Gerard J. Yun Nov 2016

Interfaith-Cross-Cultural Improvisation: Music And Meaning Across Boundaries Of Faith And Culture, Gerard J. Yun

Consensus

This article explores the social value and meaning of interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation (musical improvisation between people from differing cultural and faith traditions) and its unique quality of engaging widely different cultural and faith-based groups. It draws concepts from evolutionary biology, ethnomusicology, religious experience, the emerging field of community music, and the insight of first-hand participants. Interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation can be seen as a form of “deep play” with the ability to signal and evoke empathy across participants who identify with divergent beliefs, cultures, and practices. The article attempts to illuminate the process of interfaith-cross-cultural improvisation as a meaningful undertaking of interfaith and …

Mandated Ethics: Regulatory Innovation And Its Limits In The Governance Of Research Involving Humans, Igor Gontcharov Nov 2016

Mandated Ethics: Regulatory Innovation And Its Limits In The Governance Of Research Involving Humans, Igor Gontcharov

PhD Dissertations

Harmonization of risk policy in research involving humans, following the adoption of the Tri-Council Policy Statement: Ethical Conduct for Research Involving Humans (TCPS) in 1998, which extended the biomedical model of research ethics review to the social sciences and humanities, constitutes the focus of this portfolio dissertation. The articles in the portfolio examine the challenges that prospective ethics review poses to those research disciplines, the methods and ethics of which may differ from, or even be antagonistic to the biomedical model.

The regulatory space of research involving humans is a highly dynamic field, and a place of significant tensions caused …

Regional Variation In Ascaris Lumbricoides And Trichuris Trichiura Infections By Age Cohort And Sex: Effects Of Market Integration Among The Indigenous Shuar Of Amazonian Ecuador, Theresa E. Gildner, Tara J. Cepon-Robins, Melissa A. Liebert, Samuel S. Urlacher, Felicia C. Madimenos, J. Josh Snodgross, Lawrence S. Sugiyama

Publications and Research

Background: Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infection peaks during childhood and varies by sex. The impact of market integration (MI) (increasing production for and consumption from a market-based economy) on these infection patterns, however, is unclear. In this study, STH infection is examined by sex and age among indigenous Shuar inhabiting two regions of Amazonian Ecuador: (1) the modestly market-integrated Upano Valley (UV) and (2) the more traditional Cross-Cutucú (CC) region.

Methods: Kato-Katz fecal smears were examined for parasite presence and infection intensity. Factorial ANOVAs and post hoc simple effects analyses were performed by sex to compare infection intensity between regions and …

Body Mass Estimates From Bone And Tooth Measurements In White-Tailed Deer, Odocoileus Virginianus, Brandi Morris, Alfred J. Mead Nov 2016

Body Mass Estimates From Bone And Tooth Measurements In White-Tailed Deer, Odocoileus Virginianus, Brandi Morris, Alfred J. Mead

Georgia Journal of Science

The distal forelimbs and mandibles of 110 female and 240 male white-tailed deer (Odocoileus virginianus) from the Piedmont National Wildlife Refuge, Georgia, were used to examine the relationship between metacarpal dimensions, first lower molar occlusal surface area, and mandibular width versus body mass. The strongest correlation was found between female metacarpal proximal area vs. body mass (R2 = 0.74). The combined-sexes metacarpal proximal area vs. body mass displayed a lower correlation (R2 = 0.54). The female first lower molar surface area vs. body mass produced the highest dental correlation (R2 = 0.56). The study suggests that body mass estimates using …

Circular Economy And System Thinking Framework In Design; Food System Design, Mehrafza Mirzazad Barijugh Nov 2016

Circular Economy And System Thinking Framework In Design; Food System Design, Mehrafza Mirzazad Barijugh

Theses

The purpose of this thesis is to bring the circular economy framework and system thinking into the process of design thinking. The traditional design process is made up of five steps: 1) Discover a challenge. 2) Interpret the challenge. 3) Create opportunities and ideas. 4) Develop a solution and experiment with it. 5) Evolve the idea. This project is structured upon a methodology generated to apply a circular system framework in design that begins with taking a holistic view of topic. This methodology structured into five phases. The first phase is referring to this approach as moving from Macrocosm to …

The Persistence And Retention Of Students Participating In A Student Success Program, Karen Westerman Kitchens Nov 2016

The Persistence And Retention Of Students Participating In A Student Success Program, Karen Westerman Kitchens

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

The purpose of this mixed methods study was to examine and explore the institutional policy levers that facilitate successful educational outcomes in a TRiO funded Student Success Program at a large, urban research university in the Mid-South. Three research questions guided the study: (1) how do the educational outcomes of the university's TRiO SSP participants differ compared to the university's low income, first generation students, (2) how are the university's SSP institutional policy levers structured to improve the educational outcomes of program participants, and (3) how do the university's SSP participants experience the effectiveness of the program's institutional policy levers …

Providers’ Perspectives On Inbound Medical Tourism In Central America And The Caribbean: Factors Driving And Inhibiting Sector Development And Their Health Equity Implications, Rory Johnston, Valorie A. Crooks, Alejandro Cerón, Ronald Labonté, Jeremy Snyder, Emanuel O. Núñez, Walter G. Flores

Anthropology: Faculty Scholarship

Background

Many governments and health care providers worldwide are enthusiastic to develop medical tourism as a service export. Despite the popularity of this policy uptake, there is relatively little known about the specific local factors prospectively motivating and informing development of this sector.

Objective

To identify common social, economic, and health system factors shaping the development of medical tourism in three Central American and Caribbean countries and their health equity implications.

Design

In-depth, semi-structured interviews were conducted in Mexico, Guatemala, and Barbados with 150 health system stakeholders. Participants were recruited from private and public sectors working in various fields: trade …

Dark Shadow Of The Long White Cloud: Neighborhood Safety Is Associated With Self-Rated Health And Cortisol During Pregnancy In Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Zaneta M. Thayer Nov 2016

Dark Shadow Of The Long White Cloud: Neighborhood Safety Is Associated With Self-Rated Health And Cortisol During Pregnancy In Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand, Zaneta M. Thayer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Auckland, Aotearoa/New Zealand is a culturally and ethnically diverse city. Despite popular global conceptions regarding its utopian nature, the lived experience for many individuals in Auckland attests to the substantial social, economic, and health inequalities that exist there. In particular, rapidly rising home prices constrain housing decisions and force individuals to live in less desirable neighborhoods, with potential impacts on individual health. One of the pathways through which adverse neighborhood conditions could impact health is through alterations in the functioning of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal (HPA)-axis, which regulates the physiological stress response. This paper evaluates the relationship between perceived …

Cultural Awareness In Nuclear Security Programs: A Critical Link, Al-Sharif Nasser Bin Nasser, Jasmine Auda, Katherine Bachner

International Journal of Nuclear Security

Nuclear security programs that offer training and capacity building opportunities to practitioners working in nuclear facilities play a central role in strengthening the global nuclear security architecture. There is often a significant divide, however, between both the development of these programs and their implementation, and between the programs’ intended and actual outcomes. As this article will argue, this disconnect can often be attributed to an absence of cultural awareness and an inability for internationally-designed programs to effectively resonate with local audiences. Accordingly, the importance of the role of cultural awareness in implementing nuclear security programs will be assessed, and its …
