Transforming Marginality: Redefining Hmong Ethnic Identity Through Development In Sapa, Vietnam, Mary Cook, Jacob Hickman
Transforming Marginality: Redefining Hmong Ethnic Identity Through Development In Sapa, Vietnam, Mary Cook, Jacob Hickman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
In addition to a booming tourist industry, Sapa, Vietnam is home to a number of development organizations seeking to improve the livelihoods of ethnic minorities in the region. One Hmong woman, whom I will call Maiv, started one of the first indigenous educational development programs in Sapa- ‘by Hmong people for Hmong people,’ as she describes it. In short, the organization boards ethnic minority youths (mostly Hmong) closer to a local school so they can receive an education. Maiv’s organization also provides jobs for women by running a trekking business, a café, and a handicraft shop.
Islands Within An Almost Island: History, Myth, And Aislamiento In Baja California, Mexico, Ryan B. Anderson
Islands Within An Almost Island: History, Myth, And Aislamiento In Baja California, Mexico, Ryan B. Anderson
Faculty Publications
This paper examines the persistent histories and lasting effects of the Baja California peninsula's status as an "almost island." The peninsula is almost an island in so many ways. Its reputation as an island-like entity has also ben strengthened by a longstanding myth that it was, in fact, an actual island. In many senses it was an island - isolated, remote, difficult to envision, understand, and control. Geography and climate played a vital role in all of this, but so, too, did human imagination. The author uses the concept of shima, along with discussions about the dual meanings of the …
The Global Rock-Art Database Project Towards Machine Learning: Building A Collaborative Open Source Platform For Heritage Management From Information Structure To Information Visualization Using Australian Heritage Examples, Robert Haubt
Staff Scholarship - Australia & Dubai
This guest talk, presented at Lava Lab at the University of Hawaiʻi, explores the intersection of collaboration, data ontology, and information visualization in advancing machine learning within the Global Rock Art Database project. Drawing on insights from the project’s first four years, the talk emphasizes the critical need for cultural heritage preservation by systematically recording and structuring global rock art data in accessible and sustainable ways. This effort not only supports public education on rock art but also facilitates scholarly research.
Key discussions include advancements in data ontology using the CIDOC Conceptual Reference Model (CIDOC CRM) for semantic data management …

Additive Schooling: Understanding Latino Education In A South Provo Elementary School, Hailey Leavitt, Gregory Thompson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
My research was a case study of an elementary school in South Provo – Franklin Elementary, which focuses on two, second grade classrooms and the homes of six Latino second grade students. It focused on the similarities and differences found between home and school environments and how they shaped the educational experience of these six students. To do this, I examined what specific Latino additive schooling practices are being implemented in Franklin Elementary.

The Dual Image Of The Aro In Igbo Development History: An Aftermath Of Their Role In The Slave Trade, Ndu Life Njoku
The Dual Image Of The Aro In Igbo Development History: An Aftermath Of Their Role In The Slave Trade, Ndu Life Njoku
Journal of Retracing Africa
The Arochukwu people, popularly known as the Aro, are the most debated sub-cultural group in Igboland. The Aro, whose ancestral home is near the Cross River, and their co-Igbo neighbors were an integral part of the early history of the hinterland of the southeastern region of Nigeria. The Aro dominated commerce, politics, and religion in the region in precolonial times. With the introduction of the Atlantic slave trade in the fifteenth century, they emerged as significant players. The Aro’s role in the region in both precolonial and colonial times has shaped the way they are perceived in contemporary Igbo society. …
Teaching With Technology In The Modern Classroom: A Learning Systems Model, Gary R. Schornack, Charles E. Beck
Teaching With Technology In The Modern Classroom: A Learning Systems Model, Gary R. Schornack, Charles E. Beck
Bollinger-Rosado Teaching & Learning Effectiveness Symposium Proceedings
Rapid advances in technology, an expanding non-traditional student body, and paradigm shifts are profoundly changing education. With Federal initiatives targeting ways to help students, educators feel the pressure to do more teaching with technology. However, educators may tend to adapt a piecemeal approach, without recognizing the wider implications for education as a total system. The Learning Systems Model expands and tailors a process model for teaching that identifies the interrelated components of education at the levels of individual, institution, and the wider society. In particular, elements within the model emphasize the needs of a multicultural and diverse student body, as …

Mexican American Families, Nicole Rose, Dr. Greg Thompson
Mexican American Families, Nicole Rose, Dr. Greg Thompson
Journal of Undergraduate Research
Researchers define familismo as a “strong identification with the family” (Triandis, Marin, Betancourt, Lisansky, & Chang, 1982). Sabogal et al. said that “perceived support from family,” “family obligations,” and third, using family as cultural “referents” are important parts of familismo(Sabogal, Marín, Otero-Sabogal, Marín, & Perez-Stable, 1987). All researchers seem to have an underlying assumption that familismo-style relationships are phenomena that occur between blood-relation (Sabogal et al., 1987)(Steidel & Contreras, 2003)(Triandis et al., 1982)(Davila, Reifsnider, & Pecina, 2011). I argue that Mexican kinship is not defined simply by blood relations and that a kin group can be formed through reciprocal relationships. …

Natural Law And Agonistic Pluralism, Daniel E. Young
Natural Law And Agonistic Pluralism, Daniel E. Young
Northwestern Review
John Rawls’ account of political liberalism posits the necessity of a metaphysically neutral “public reason” to avoid privileging any comprehensive doctrine in the public square. The natural law tradition has been claimed by some as meeting this standard. However, thinkers such as Tracey Rowland criticize the attempt to make natural law a secular, neutral ground; she believes it must be rooted in an overtly Trinitarian and Christological theology. However, such theological assumptions are not shared by those of other comprehensive doctrines. Chantal Mouffe has also challenged Rawls’ consensus conception, focusing rather on the inevitable ideological conflicts to be found in …
Christian Faith And The Scientific Explanation Of Religion, Donald H. Wacome
Christian Faith And The Scientific Explanation Of Religion, Donald H. Wacome
Northwestern Review
The cognitive theory of religion seems to threaten to debunk religion, including Christianity, as irrational. The cognitive theory explains human religiosity as an accident, a mere byproduct, of the interaction of mental mechanisms evolved for other purposes. The threat to religion can be neutralized by finding good reasons for religious beliefs which can be identified independent of the operation of the cognitive mechanisms the theory posits. Christian faith should be understood not as sub-rational belief, but as trust in the God who resurrected Jesus Christ. Our natural religiosity, like our natural morality, has no necessary connection to God, but God …

Utah’S Oldest Show The Most Concern For Future Water Shortages, Viviane Baji
Utah’S Oldest Show The Most Concern For Future Water Shortages, Viviane Baji
Research on Capitol Hill
Utah is set to double in population by 2050. It is unclear whether current water supplies will be able to accommodate the needs of the future growth. Young people will be in their prime when water shortage predictions come to fruition, so it is important to know how concerned they are about the water issues that will affect them. An understanding of the relationship between age and water shortage concern may also contribute to the development of social science theories relating age and environmental attitudes and behavior.
Research Question: "Are young people more concerned about water shortages?" to understand how …

The Urban Prison: Socioeconomic Vortexes In Latino Neighborhoods, Armando Porras, Aaron Wyatt
Research on Capitol Hill
This research shows how metropolitan cities throughout the United States are continuously impacting the lives of ethnic minorities.
In the United States, Latina/o individuals have been born into socioeconomic vortexes. In other words, they have grown up in areas where secure jobs have disappeared and a variety of other factors force them to live in damaged communities that do not foster economic and social progression.
By analyzing several works of literature written by Latina/o authors who lived in barrios that faced these challenges, as well as research addressing crime and the lack of law enforcement in marginalized neighborhoods, we have …
School Families: The Impact Of Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities, Erica Hawvermale
School Families: The Impact Of Participation In High School Extracurricular Activities, Erica Hawvermale
Research on Capitol Hill
The present study was designed to analyze the relationship between participation in extracurricular activities and high school adolescents' psychological sense of community (PSOC). Extant research has linked PSOC to the several benefits (below). As such we believe that PSOC acts as a buffer between adolescents and negative high school outcomes.
Psychological Sense of Community
The perception held by a member of a group that one belongs and matters. Further, PSOC captures that the group matters to each other and that through group commitment, shared needs will be met. Thus, PSOC encompasses four main concepts: membership, influence, fulfillment of needs, and …
Ethnography On The Return Of Professional Egyptian Female Migrants From The Gulf Cooperation Council, Nerida Mackey
Ethnography On The Return Of Professional Egyptian Female Migrants From The Gulf Cooperation Council, Nerida Mackey
Theses and Dissertations
International labor migration is one of Egypt’s economic development strategies, averaging an estimated twenty-two billion dollars in remittances in recent years, according to Egypt Daily News (Al-Aees, 2015). Although the participation of Egyptians in international migration for the purpose of work has mainly been dominated by men, there is a substantial handful of Egyptian women who independently participate in these migration flows. The Feminization of migration is still an unexplored and relatively new phenomenon in Egypt. Much of the discourse on Egyptian international labor migration has focused on men. Research on the effects of the women left behind by migrant …
