Music And The Migrant: A Transnational Account Of Cumbia, Irene L. Mekus
Audre Lorde Prize
This paper looks into the cultural synthesization and the transnational ties of cumbia between Latin America and the United States. Three case studies look at the story of migrants and their transnational ties through cumbia and are analyzed through an ethnomusicology framework.

Improving The Understanding Of Psychological Factors Contributing To Horse-Related Accident And Injury: Context, Loss Of Focus, Cognitive Errors And Rigidity, Jodi Dearaugo, Suzanne Mclaren, Phil Mcmanus, Paul D. Mcgreevy
Human-Animal Interactions Collection
While the role of the horse in riding hazards is well recognised, little attention has been paid to the role of specific theoretical psychological processes of humans in contributing to and mitigating risk. The injury, mortality or compensation claim rates for participants in the horse-racing industry, veterinary medicine and equestrian disciplines provide compelling evidence for improving risk mitigation models. There is a paucity of theoretical principles regarding the risk of injury and mortality associated with human–horse interactions. In this paper we introduce and apply the four psychological principles of context, loss of focus, global cognitive style and the application of …

Law Reform In The Ancient World: Did The Emperor Augustus Succeed Or Fail In His Morals Legislation?, Charles J. Reid Jr.
Law Reform In The Ancient World: Did The Emperor Augustus Succeed Or Fail In His Morals Legislation?, Charles J. Reid Jr.
William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice
This is an Article with a dual purpose. First, it is concerned with the process of law reform: how do we judge a given reform’s success or failure? Do we adopt strictly linear metrics? Or do we look at nonlinear impacts? For example, in the campaign against tobacco, do we judge it a success because it has reduced cigarette smoking? Or because it reduced the political power of the tobacco companies?
Secondly, in this Article, I apply this complex means of analyzing law reform to the Emperor Augustus’s morals legislation. Legal historians have typically regarded Augustus’s morals legislation as having …
Oceanic Turns And American Literary History In Global Context, Michelle Burnham
Oceanic Turns And American Literary History In Global Context, Michelle Burnham
English
Narratives of American literature and history like to begin with what was wrong about this older map, and scholars such as Peter Hulme and others have taught us to understand that it was the power of maps like Toscanelli’s that convinced Columbus that Cuba was really Cathay, and that Hispaniola must be Japan.1 Anecdotes about Columbus’s cartographic and continental confusion now usually circulate as humorous early modern warnings about the failure to ask for directions or the humiliating consequences of bad geography. But this perspective only encourages students and scholars alike to ignore what is perhaps most revealing about this …

Walk Next To The Wall: Images Of Martyrs In The Egyptian Revolution, Kirsten Stricker
Walk Next To The Wall: Images Of Martyrs In The Egyptian Revolution, Kirsten Stricker
Africana Studies Student Research Conference (2013-2019)
Prior to the Egyptian revolution citizens of Hosni Mubarak’s Egypt are taught to “walk next to the wall”; a phrase that means keep your head down, mind your own business, do not meddle in the affairs of those who outrank you, and feed your family. In the end, walking next to the wall is not enough to save them. They can no longer escape attention by blending into the walls of their cities. Khaled Said is not the first young man to die at the hands of Cairo’s police, nor is he the last. Said’s death could not be swept …
