Masters Of Return: Traveling Between Homelands In Contemporary Jewish American And Cuban American Fiction, Izabela Zieba Mar 2016

Masters Of Return: Traveling Between Homelands In Contemporary Jewish American And Cuban American Fiction, Izabela Zieba

Open Access Dissertations

This project reverses the traditional directionality of ethnic studies by examining literary representations of ethnic returns – the returns of second-generation Americans of foreign descent to the land of their ancestors. It specifically focuses on Jewish American and Cuban American protagonists who travel between their natal and ancestral homelands, pointing to a counterintuitive affinity between their stories. Analyzing a wide variety of texts, from the highly controversial works by a prominent historian, Jan T. Gross, to literary accounts by Dara Horn, Tova Reich, and Ana Menéndez, I argue that Cuban American and Jewish American returns are based on rejection and …

Berle Vii: The Modern Corporation And A Theory Of Fields, Charles R. T. O'Kelley Mar 2016

Berle Vii: The Modern Corporation And A Theory Of Fields, Charles R. T. O'Kelley

Seattle University Law Review

On May 26-27, 2015, scholars disparately trained in law, anthropology, economics, political science, history and sociology gathered in Seattle for the seventh annual Berle Symposium. As with prior symposia, a principal aim of Berle VII was to shed light on the nature of the modern corporation. As with prior symposia, the voices participating represented numerous disciplines. What sets Berle VII apart from its forerunners, however, was the decision to make social scientists the dominant voices, and to select a theory propounded by sociologists—field theory—as the focal point and backdrop for the symposium. This choice reflected a second principal aim of …

Corporations In The Flow Of Culture, Greg Urban Mar 2016

Corporations In The Flow Of Culture, Greg Urban

Seattle University Law Review

As an anthropologist, coming out of three decades of research among indigenous Brazilian populations, I naturally saw modern for-profit business corporations as tribes—the collective bearers of adaptive cultural know-how. They appeared to me to be the entities housing the culture needed to produce commodities, to trade commodities on the open market, or both. I was also, of course, aware of the legal concept of the corporation as fictive person capable of owning property and having standing in court cases, which I thought of as akin to the anthropological corporation insofar as both recognized the group as social actor. However, it …

Culture In Corporate Law Or: A Black Corporation, A Christian Corporation, And A Māori Corporation Walk Into A Bar . . ., Gwendolyn Gordon

Seattle University Law Review

Recent Supreme Court cases have entrenched a new image of corporate civic identity, assigning to the corporate person rights and abilities based upon the cultural characteristics, social ties, civic commitments, and internal lives of the human beings involved in it. This vision of the corporation is exemplified in recent cases implicating a corporate right to engage in political speech (Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission) and a right of corporations to be free of government interference regarding religious convictions (Burwell v. Hobby Lobby Stores, Inc.). Although much is being written about the soundness of the results in these cases and …

Law And The Theory Of Fields, Frank Partnoy Mar 2016

Law And The Theory Of Fields, Frank Partnoy

Seattle University Law Review

The distinction between “material” and “existential” plays a prominent role in A Theory of Fields, and it played a prominent role in discussions at the Berle VII Symposium. In general, the authors advocated the importance of the ongoing use of social skills and the collaborative efforts to seek meaning, particularly in ways beyond the merely “material.” However, the extent to which rules might matter in these efforts was less clear. Overall, Fligstein and McAdam seek to use the concept of a strategic action field to develop a theory of social change and stability. Yet social change and stability are inextricably …

Notes On The Difficulty Of Studying The Corporation, Marina Welker Mar 2016

Notes On The Difficulty Of Studying The Corporation, Marina Welker

Seattle University Law Review

In the award-winning documentary The Corporation, public intellectuals and activists characterize corporations as “externalizing machines,” “doom machines,” “persons with no moral conscience,” and “monsters trying to devour as much profit as possible at anyone’s expense.” In other footage, people on the street personify corporations: “General Electric: a kind old man with lots of stories;” “Nike: young, energetic;” “Microsoft: aggressive;” “McDonald’s: young, outgoing, enthusiastic;” “Monsanto: immaculately dressed;” “Disney: goofy;” “The Body Shop: deceptive.” The documentary, like screenwriter and legal scholar Joel Bakan’s book The Corporation: The Pathological Pursuit of Profit and Power, imparts dissonant messages about corporations. On the one hand, …

Religious Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora: Combating The “Othering” Of Muslim Refugee Students In Nebraska, Jessica Sierk Mar 2016

Religious Literacy In The New Latino Diaspora: Combating The “Othering” Of Muslim Refugee Students In Nebraska, Jessica Sierk

Journal of Inquiry and Action in Education

Many communities across the United States have been undergoing recent demographic changes. Since the 1980s, low-skilled labor (e.g. meatpacking) has attracted Latino families to settle in communities that historically have been home to few, if any, Latinos (i.e. the New Latino Diaspora). In more recent years, these same job opportunities have also characterized these communities as prime locations for refugees from countries like Somalia and Sudan. As a result, schools in these settings are serving an even more diverse student population than they were twenty, ten, or even five years ago. Given that the contexts of the New Latino Diaspora …

Does Grandparental Help Mediate The Relationship Between Kin Presence And Fertility?, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear Mar 2016

Does Grandparental Help Mediate The Relationship Between Kin Presence And Fertility?, Kristin Snopkowski, Rebecca Sear

Anthropology Faculty Publications and Presentations

BACKGROUND

Previous research suggests that kin availability may be correlated with reproductive outcomes, but it is not clear that a causal relationship underlies these findings. Further, there is substantial variation in how kin availability is measured.

OBJECTIVE

We attempt to identify whether different measures of kin availability influence how kin affect reproductive outcomes and whether the effect of kin on reproductive outcomes is driven by the help that they provide.

METHODS

Using data from the Indonesia Family Life Survey (1993, 1997, 2000, 2007), we compare the survival of parents and parents-in-law, their co-residence, geographic proximity, contact frequency, and helping behavior …

Daily Activity And Nest Occupation Patterns Of Fox Squirrels (Sciurus Niger) Throughout The Year, Thomas Wassmer, Roberto Refinetti Mar 2016

Daily Activity And Nest Occupation Patterns Of Fox Squirrels (Sciurus Niger) Throughout The Year, Thomas Wassmer, Roberto Refinetti

Psychological Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

The authors investigated the general activity and nest occupation patterns of fox squirrels in a natural setting using temperature-sensitive data loggers that measure activity as changes in the microenvironment of the animal. Data were obtained from 25 distinct preparations, upon 14 unique squirrels, totaling 1385 recording days. The animals were clearly diurnal, with a predominantly unimodal activity pattern, although individual squirrels occasionally exhibited bimodal patterns, particularly in the spring and summer. Even during the short days of winter (9 hours of light), the squirrels typically left the nest after dawn and returned before dusk, spending only about 7 hours out …

Archaeology Of Silver Springs State Park, Marion County, Florida, Rudy J. Westerman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

An archaeological survey was conducted of the Silver Springs State Park in Ocala, Florida, between August 2014 and December 2015. The project goals were to relocate and assess the previously recorded archaeological sites in the park and attempt to discover new sites. Background research, archaeological fieldwork including surface collection, shovel testing, and informant interview were conducted with this aim. Each site is described and addressed, and most were relocated; twelve new resources were added to the inventory. The Silver Springs and Silver River watershed have been occupied from the Paleo-Indian period at least 13,000 years ago through the twentieth century. …
