Stories Of Becoming And Being An Associate Degree Nurse Educator: A Narrative Inquiry Study Examining How Participants' Ways Of Knowing Evolved Through Their Experiences, Bonnie Jill Ross

Theses and Dissertations

This study explored the stories of the experiences of three associate degree nurse educators and how they evolved in the way they viewed their world as they transitioned in their role from nurse expert to experienced nurse educator. As associate degree nursing education is the most commonly reported initial nursing education of registered nurses in the United States, and, because of the highly affordable and accessible means for educating the next generation of nurses, the purpose of this study was to address the projected nurse and nursing faculty shortage. Through narrative inquiry, this study has provided a means to inform …

Maximizing History And Circumstance To Strengthen Interventions To Stem Workplace Bullying, Laura Cox Dzurec, Monica Kennison, Patricia Gillen, Taylor L. Grube, Mary Francis, Rose R. Schwartz

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Monday, July 27, 2015:

PatteRN of history and immediate circumstance that are recognizable as 'milieu' tend not only to describe context as it exists in its present state, but also to predict the outcomes of specific events occurring within it. Particularly when events are complex, individuals' understanding of the surrounding milieu serves to significantly influence the ways they describe and address the events occurring therein, constraining or expanding possibilities for problem solving. Workplace bullying is one such complex event, incorporating perpetrators, victims, and bystanders in shifting and long-standing relationships that, historically, have proven to be largely intractable, …

Cultural Humility: A Concept Analysis, Diana Lyn Baptiste, Cynthia L. Foronda, Kevin B. Ousman, Maren M. Reinholdt

International Nursing Research Congress (INRC)

Session presented on Saturday, July 25, 2015:

Diversity is being increasingly recognized as an area of emphasis in health care. The term cultural humility is used frequently but society's understanding of the term is unclear. The aim of this paper was to provide a concept analysis and a current definition for the term cultural humility. To capture society's definition of the term, seven databases representing different disciplines were explored. Abstracts were read for relevance and sixty two articles from were included in the review. Rodgers and Knafl's (2000) method of concept analysis was used to guide the process. Cultural humility …

Investigating Alternative Subsistence Strategies Among The Homeless Near Tampa, Florida, Matthew Peter Rooney Mar 2016

Investigating Alternative Subsistence Strategies Among The Homeless Near Tampa, Florida, Matthew Peter Rooney

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Modern homelessness is one of the most pressing social and political problems of our time. Several hundred thousand people experience homelessness in the United States each year, and the U.S. Department of Housing, which attempts to count those people, has admitted that their statistics are conservative estimates at best. A recent archaeological study (Zimmerman et al 2010) examining material culture associated with homeless communities in Indianapolis has suggested that those who are considered chronically homeless have generally abandoned wage labor and are instead pursuing urban foraging as a subsistence strategy. In order to better understand the structures of homeless communities, …

Reconstructing Prehistoric Diets Of Desert People Through Dental Calculus, Michael T. Searcy Mar 2016

Reconstructing Prehistoric Diets Of Desert People Through Dental Calculus, Michael T. Searcy

Journal of Undergraduate Research

In 2014 I was awarded a Mentoring Environment Grant by ORCA to examine microfossils embedded in the dental calculus (tartar) of individuals who were found during excavations in and around the site of Paquimé, which dates to the thirteenth century A.D. This ancient city is located in the Chihuahuan desert in modern-day Casas Grandes, Chihuahua, Mexico. Over the last two years, I have been able to involve students in the extraction, processing, publishing, and presentation of the results of this analysis. While the research is ongoing, preliminary results have positively identified several fascinating foods that were consumed by the ancient …

Solid Metaphor And Sacred Space: Interpreting The Paradigmatic And Syntagmatic Relations Found At Beth Alpha Synagogue, Evan Carter Mar 2016

Solid Metaphor And Sacred Space: Interpreting The Paradigmatic And Syntagmatic Relations Found At Beth Alpha Synagogue, Evan Carter

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

With the destruction of the Second Temple in 70 CE, more than an iconic symbol of Jewish identity was destroyed. As the epicenter of religious life for Jews within the land of Israel, the Temple stood as both a symbol for religious hope and as the physical embodiment of Judaism. Yet, in the centuries that would follow synagogue’s like the one found at Beth Alpha would come to fill its absence.

In this thesis I will demonstrate how the use of Christopher Tilley’s theory of the solid metaphor helps us to better understand both the art and architecture of the …

Tarian Perdamaian: Enacting Alternative Hindu/Christian Identity Discourses Through "Secular" Balinese Performing Arts, Dustin D. Wiebe

Yale Journal of Music & Religion

This article examines the nature of interreligious relations between Protestants of the Bali Church and Hindus as enacted through dramatic forms of Balinese music and dance. Particular attention is paid to the influence of mass tourism as a contributing factor in this process. Since the early twentieth century these arts have formed a central component of a pan-Balinese identity discourse known as" kebalian." The first Balinese converted to Christianity during the 1930s and were subsequently excommunicated from their ancestral villages for refusing to participate in local customary practices (including the ritualistic use of gamelan music). For this reason, Balinese …
