Exploring The Aesthetics Ofmexican-American Popular Ritual, Christopher D. Tirres
Exploring The Aesthetics Ofmexican-American Popular Ritual, Christopher D. Tirres
Religious Studies
For many years now, I have been crisscrossing the disciplines of religious studies and theology. As an undergraduate in a department of religion, I was exposed to the approaches and methods of Religionswissenschat, or “the scientiic study of religion,” yet I also fell in love with liberation theology, which I discovered through two courses in politics. I was drawn to liberation theology’s critique of structural sin and its attention to the fullness of life in the here-and-now. Under the mentorship of a philosopher (Cornel West) and an historian of religion (David Carrasco), I wrote an undergraduate senior thesis on the …

Intent and mitigating circumstances play a central role in moral and legal assessments in large-scale industrialized societies. Although these features of moral assessment are widely assumed to be universal, to date, they have only been studied in a narrow range of societies. We show that there is substantial cross-cultural variation among eight traditional small-scale societies (ranging from hunter-gatherer to pastoralist to horticulturalist) and two Western societies (one urban, one rural) in the extent to which intent and mitigating circumstances influence moral judgments. Although participants in all societies took such factors into account to some degree, they did so to very …

Legal Interpretation By Computer: A Survey Of Interpretive Rules, Eric Engle
Legal Interpretation By Computer: A Survey Of Interpretive Rules, Eric Engle
Akron Intellectual Property Journal
This article presents a survey of legal interpretive rules. The rules presented in this survey are used as the rule base in the computer program accompanying this article, an expert system. The computer program models legal decision-making and uses the rules presented to make legal decisions, generating a report to justify the decision reached. Legal interpretation is chosen as a model for computation representation because understanding interpretive methods is useful for any jurist seeking creative arguments. This survey of legal interpretive rules is of both a theoretical and practical interest.
Transfer Pricing Equity: An Examination Of Reported Revenue Versus Expected Revenue, Justin Moore, Harold Harold, Clarence Coleman
Transfer Pricing Equity: An Examination Of Reported Revenue Versus Expected Revenue, Justin Moore, Harold Harold, Clarence Coleman
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
This research examines whether African crude oil and natural gas liquids (NGLs) sales revenue deviates from expected sales revenue based on market prices. The deviation may be the result of International Oil Companies (IOCs) transferring a significant amount of crude oils and NGLs to other regions of the world to be turned into finished goods, due to the lack of refining capacity in Africa. This situation suggests that the African region’s governments are placed at a significant disadvantage from profiting off the crude oils and NGLs reserves in their countries because they cannot turn the majority of crude oils and …
Interactions Of A Captive Maturing Female Hamadryas Baboon, Jordyn Kessler, Janice L. Chism Ph.D.
Interactions Of A Captive Maturing Female Hamadryas Baboon, Jordyn Kessler, Janice L. Chism Ph.D.
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
In the wild, hamadryas baboons (Papio hamadryas hamadryas) typically practice male philopatry, where females transfer out of natal units to avoid inbreeding (Swedell et al. 2011). However, little is known about hamadryas female transfer in captivity. In this study, we used focal animal sampling (Altmann 1974) to observe female transfer in a captive group comprised of two one-male units. The group includes a subadult female, whom we expected to transfer to the non-natal unit soon after reaching sexual maturity. We recorded the proximity between the subadult female and all other individuals, as well as affiliative and agonistic behavior …

A Cross-Racial Study Of Attitudes Toward And Beliefs About Male Homosexuality, Alexandra D. Foster, Brad Tripp Ph.D
The Winthrop McNair Research Bulletin
This study presents data about the attitudes toward homosexuality of black and white people. The survey used in this study was adapted from Furnham and Saito (2009) which compared the attitudes and beliefs about male homosexuality of British and Japanese participants. The sample consisted of 131 (37 black, 97 white) Winthrop students. The results were analyzed using T-tests. The results of the study were consistent with the literature in inconsistency, of the 17 categories tested significant racial differences were found in 6. There were no significant racial differences in beliefs about the following factors: Attributing homosexuality to biological causes, the …
Memories That Won't Desert. Transnational Legacies Of Francoism And The Spanish Civil War In 21st Century Novel, Comic And Film., Julie Samit
Open Access Dissertations
This dissertation examines contemporary representations of Francoism and the Spanish Civil War and emphasizes the Republican legacy in three different media: novel, comics, and film. Its main focus is Spain, but my corpus also includes the experience of French and Mexican exiles. These works, produced for the most part by descendants of Republicans in diverse sociocultural and sociopolitical contexts, establish a memorial network that goes beyond national boundaries, and that travels from generation to generation. I define the production of second and third generations who recuperate individual stories that have been repressed politically as “legacy narratives.” I argue that because …
Manliness And Masculinity: Towards A Distinction Of Two Key Terms In Men's Studies, Hongsheng Sui
Manliness And Masculinity: Towards A Distinction Of Two Key Terms In Men's Studies, Hongsheng Sui
Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art
Manliness and masculinity are two related and different concepts, and there have been inaccurate rendering into Chinese and confusing usage, but there has little study of the distinction between them in domestic academic circle. The paper sets out to distinguish the two terms from the perspectives of philosophy, anthropology, sociology and culturology, in hope of distinguishing them in terms of their etymological and cultural development, their definition, scope and criteria, their value orientation and judgment, and their construction strategies and modes of practice. The paper aims at redressing the misconceptions about manliness and shedding light on the predicaments of modern …

From Wilde to Obergefell:
Gay Legal Theatre, 1895-2015
Todd Barry, PhD
University of Connecticut, 2016
This dissertation examines how theatre and law have worked together to produce and regulate gay male lives since the 1895 Oscar Wilde trials. I use the term “gay legal theatre” to label an interdisciplinary body of texts and performances that include legal trials and theatrical productions. Since the Wilde trials, gay legal theatre has entrenched conceptions of gay men in transatlantic culture and influenced the laws governing gay lives and same-sex activity. I explore crucial moments in the history of this unique genre: the Wilde …
Understanding Identity Through Ceramic Analysis At The Crystal River And Roberts Island Sites, Rachel Elizabeth Thompson
Understanding Identity Through Ceramic Analysis At The Crystal River And Roberts Island Sites, Rachel Elizabeth Thompson
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The ceramic assemblage from previous excavations at Crystal River (8CI1), a Woodland period mound center on Florida’s west-central coast, exhibits variation in temper and surface treatments indicative of distinct pottery traditions and, perhaps, social groups. I analyzed ceramics from recent, better controlled excavations at Crystal River and the neighboring and partially contemporaneous site of Roberts Island (8CI41), using the theoretical framework of communities of practice to evaluate this claim.
Analysis suggests that while some degree of diversity in paste was maintained through all four phases, there was greater homogeneity of paste, as well as more mixing of paste categories, during …
Resilience In Uncertainty: An Examination Of A Moroccan Centre Serving Unwed Mothers, Dana Louise Goodlett
Resilience In Uncertainty: An Examination Of A Moroccan Centre Serving Unwed Mothers, Dana Louise Goodlett
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Utilizing a gender-based violence approach, this study investigated service delivery realities for a Moroccan women’s centre serving unwed mothers and their babies. Primary research methods included participant observation and semi-structured interviews (n=20) with unwed mothers and centre staff. This study aimed to determine what factors lead mothers to seek assistance, types of assistance offered, and challenges and future opportunities for services. Findings indicate a lack of social support to mothers, lack of social and economic support for the centre and reduced service capacity, and the use of deceit in interactions between mothers and staff rooted in cultural notions of shame. …

Determining The Degree Of The Routinization Of Additive Manufacturing In The Air Logistics Complexes, Candis A. Woods
Theses and Dissertations
Fiscal constraints have affected the USAF’s spending and sustainment of weapons systems that are being utilized beyond their programmed life cycle; therefore, it is imperative that processes be given the critical eye for improvement, innovative approaches, and/or best practice implementation. The AFSC, part of the AFMC, has embarked on a groundbreaking effort to transform operations and leverage industry best practices, while maintaining focus on warfighter support to create “The AFSC Way.” The AFSC Way is based on a shared leadership model that emphasizes speed, safety, and quality, which gives way to innovative ideas and new technologies in order to achieve …
Determining Air Base Installation Capacity Through Multivariate Analysis, Perry L. Cansick
Determining Air Base Installation Capacity Through Multivariate Analysis, Perry L. Cansick
Theses and Dissertations
Per the Air Force Strategic Master Plan, the Air Force will adjust their current basing structure to provide the most effective and efficient installations to support national defense objectives. The Air Force may be required to make strategic basing decisions that close installations and relocate missions to achieve an optimal basing structure. However, before making these decisions, the Air Force needs to have a comprehensive understanding of installation capacity. This research provides an operational definition of installation capacity, which is necessary for measuring installation-level, infrastructure capacity. Using this definition, the research evaluates a set of capacity indicators using principal component …

A Tourist Performance: Redefining The Tourist Attraction, Brandy Lee Kinkade
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The aim of this paper is to examine the intersection of tourism and memoirs in the United States specifically how specific travel memoirs function as tourist attractions. This investigation employs performer-centered analysis as a method of inquiry in order to gain insight on tourist experience as well as concepts of travel, imagination and embodiment. The paper also employs MacCannell’s Semiotics of Attraction as a framework to illustrate the presence of the following categories: tourist, sight, and marker. The presence and the relationships established between these categories establish Into Thin Air and Almost Somewhere: Twenty-eight Days on the John Muir Trail …

Neglected Dimensions Of Global Security: The Global Health Risk Framework Commission, Lawrence O. Gostin, Carmen C. Mundaca-Shah, Patrick W. Kelley
Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works
The world has experienced global health crises ranging from novel influenzas (H5N1 and H1N1) and coronaviruses (SARS and MERS) to the Ebola and Zika viruses. In each case, governments and international organizations seemed unable to react quickly and decisively. Health crises have unmasked critical vulnerabilities— weak health systems, failures of leadership, and political overreaction and underreaction. The Global Health Risk Framework Commission, for which the National Academy of Medicine served as the secretariat, recently set out a comprehensive strategy to safeguard human and economic security from pandemic threats.

Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism Among Species Monomorphic In Body Size: Relationship To Relative Newborn Body Mass, Robert G. Tague
Pelvic Sexual Dimorphism Among Species Monomorphic In Body Size: Relationship To Relative Newborn Body Mass, Robert G. Tague
Faculty Publications
Females have larger pelves than males among eutherians to mitigate obstetrical difficulty. This study addresses 3 issues concerning pelvic sexual dimorphism using 8 species that are sexually monomorphic in nonpelvic size: Aotus azarae, Castor canadensis, Dasypus novemcinctus, Hylobates lar, Saguinus geoffroyi, Sciurus carolinensis, Sylvilagus floridanus, and Urocyon cinereoargenteus. Using published data to compute the index of relative newborn body mass (RNBM = [newborn body mass/adult female body mass]100%) for 266 eutherian species, A. azarae, H. lar, and S. geoffroyi are characterized as giving birth to relatively large newborns and the other 5 species as giving birth to relatively small newborns. …
