Pastoralists' Perception On The Trend Of Various Climatic, Social And Environmental Variables In Baringo County, Kenya, Geoffrey L. Lelenguyah, Samuel K. Kabochi, John C. Biwot
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
As global temperatures increase, more intense rainfall and more frequent droughts will have devastating effects on pastoral livelihoods. The aim of this study was to investigate pastoralists' perceptions on the impacts of climate variability on their livelihoods from 1971 to 2010. This study utilized household structured questionnaires. Statistical tests included t-test and Chi-square test (χ2). Statistically significant differences between the responses in strata 1 and 2 on the perceived trend of rainfall and floods towards the future were noted. This study recommends the strengthening of local institutions to be able to deal with impacts of climate variability and …

Inside/Outside/In-Between: Understanding How Jewish Identity Impacts The Lives And Narratives Of Ashkenazi Female Public School Educators, Mindi Ellen Benditson
Inside/Outside/In-Between: Understanding How Jewish Identity Impacts The Lives And Narratives Of Ashkenazi Female Public School Educators, Mindi Ellen Benditson
Educational Studies Dissertations
Since Ashkenazi Jews in the United States are not a visible minority, it often becomes difficult to distinguish what/who is a Jew. As many Jewish females may appear to be of the dominant culture, they often get overlooked in discussions and courses on teacher education and multiculturalism/multicultural education. However, their identity as both Jewish and White and the absence of conversation regarding their multiple positions in education and in society can contest, as well as support, their connection to multiculturalism.
The purpose of this research was to identify how four middle class Ashkenazi females in the greater Los Angeles area …

Africa is beginning to capture the imagination of entrepreneurs, corporate executives, and scholars as an emerging market of new growth opportunities. Over 15 years, the continent has experienced an average growth rate of 5% (World Economic Forum, 2015: v). Out of its 54 countries, 26 have achieved middle-income status, while the proportion of those living in extreme poverty has fallen from 51% in 2005 to 42% in 2014 (African Development Bank, 2014a: 49). Although there are regional differences, the primary drivers of growth have been rapidly emerging consumer markets, regional economic integration, investment in infrastructure, technological leap-frogging, and the opening …

Language And Cognition: Insight From Exceptional Cases, Anna Snyder
Language And Cognition: Insight From Exceptional Cases, Anna Snyder
Senior Honors Theses
The understanding of the world in the human mind is accomplished through cognitive processing and articulated through linguistic processing. Undoubtedly, there is a significant connection between language and cognition because of how intricately they work together to create and express meaning. Researchers from a variety of fields have sought to discover the specifics of these domains to determine what kind of relationship exists between them and how the involvement between language and cognition should be best represented. Though they obviously interact, the different characteristics of each domain provide evidence that linguistic processes and cognitive processes may be distinct. Rather than …
Negotiating A Culture Of Encounter And Disruptive Discourse In Catholic Higher Education, Laura Leming
Negotiating A Culture Of Encounter And Disruptive Discourse In Catholic Higher Education, Laura Leming
Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work Faculty Publications
Any brief attention to global, national, and local news underlines the urgency for education that leads to knowledge about and action for the common good. Catholic institutions of higher learning have a dual history of encouraging students to speak and act on behalf of the common good while also pursuing the good life. As those who can readily access a Catholic education have increasingly come from the upper middle class, how are we introducing our students into the culture of encounter that Pope Francis called the U.S. Bishops to promote in September 2015? This essay explores ideas and examples related …

Embodying Tibet: Negotiating Tibetan-American Youth Identities At The Tibetan Children's Village Summer School Program, Lekey S. Leidecker , '16
Senior Theses, Projects, and Awards
My research illuminates the ways that the Tibetan Children’s Village Summer School program, despite its positive intentions, does in fact reinforce a fixed Tibetan identity by intertwining authenticity with a specific set of embodied experiences that do not match that of Tibetan youth living in the United States. Drawing on MacPherson’s (2011) “Fallacies About Language Sustainability” and recommendations for cultural preservation education, I evaluate the summer program’s curriculum as insufficient for promoting new articulations of Tibetan identity that reflects participants’ lived experiences in the United States, and argue that the current system in fact is exacerbating the difficulties that these …

Congress, Tribal Recognition, And Legislative-Administrative Multiplicity, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Congress, Tribal Recognition, And Legislative-Administrative Multiplicity, Kirsten Matoy Carlson
Indiana Law Journal
Most descriptions of federal recognition by political scientists, anthropologists, and legal scholars focus on an administrative process run by the Office of Federal Acknowledgment (OFA) within the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA). To the extent that scholars discuss the role of Congress in recognizing Indian nations, they suggest that it plays a diminishing one. In fact, this misconception pervades the field. Most scholars assume that Congress has largely ceded control over the recognition of Indian nations to the BIA.
This discrepancy begs the question: Who has it right? Hollywood screenwriters or the academic experts? The answer to this question matters …

Paternal Genetic Structure In Contemporary Mennonite Communities From The American Midwest, Kristine G. Beaty, M. J. Mosher, Michael H. Crawford, Phillip Melton
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
Over the last 35 years, researchers from the Laboratory of Biological Anthropology at the University of Kansas have been working with Mennonite communities to better understand evolutionary patterns of fission-fusion in relationship to their genetic history and population structure. In this study, short tandem repeat (STR) markers from the nonrecombining region of the Y chromosome (NRY) provided increased resolution of the molecular population structure for these groups. NRY is known to be informative for determining paternal genetic ancestral patterns in recently derived human populations. Mennonites represent a branch of the Anabaptist movement that began in northern and central Europe in …

Archaeological Investigation Of The Drive Circle And West Hyphen At Gore Place Waltham, Massachusetts, Christa M. Beranek, Alexandra Crowder
Andrew Fiske Memorial Center for Archaeological Research Publications
In July of 2015, the Fiske Center for Archaeological Research at UMass Boston conducted test excavations at Gore Place, the 1806 mansion house of Christopher and Rebecca Gore in Waltham, Massachusetts, to answer questions about changes in the landscape on the north side of the house. The excavations focused on areas of interest within the drive circle and against the west hyphen of the house. The project was carried out under State Archaeologist Permit #3559. The main results in the oval were the discovery of a Gore-period driveway under the grassy oval, indicating that the driveway was broader in front …

Applying Aashe Stars To Examine Geography’S “Sense Of Place” In Sustainability Education, Makayla J. Bonney, Leslie A. Duram
Publications
Geography supports place-based inquiry for the learner, applying the old environmental adage of “think globally, act locally” to environmental problem solving. Many within and outside of the discipline of geography see it as a highly appropriate home for sustainability studies. Yet despite a history of human-environment education, place-based relevancy, and support from professional research or education organizations, studies show that geography does not always take a lead role in sustainability education. In the following, we revisit the contested histories of geography and sustainability education and show support for geography-led sustainability curriculum. The scope of this research is universities which have …

E-Commerce’S Impact On Big-Box Retailers, Brian Bates
E-Commerce’S Impact On Big-Box Retailers, Brian Bates
Honors Theses
The history of retail has been an evolutionary process of new innovations and transformations. Previous changes include: the development of catalogue based retail, and the recent innovation of super stores, known as big-box retailers. It is possible that we are dawning upon a new revolution of the retail environment as electronic commerce (e-commerce) continues to grow. This paper will analyze the impact of e-commerce on retail markets, specifically big-box stores (warehouse style retailers with over 750 million in sales). Using financial and real estate data from BloombergTM, and e-commerce data from eMarketerTM and the US Census Bureau two …

Sequela: Casey, Gonzales, And State Legislatures' Unscrupulous Use Of Science In Crafting Legislation To Regulate Pregnant Women And Women's Access To Reproductive Health, Samantha Von Ende
Indiana Journal of Law and Social Equality
Sparked by the unprecedented number of reproductive healthcare restrictions proposed and enacted by state governments from 2010 to 2014, this Note seeks to document the troubling trend and varying manifestations of legislation premised on unsound scientific evidence and purportedly enacted to advance states' recognized interests in protecting women's health and potential life. Such legal restrictions take many forms and are divided into four categories for the purpose of this paper: (1) Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers, or TRAP laws; (2) Fetal Protection Laws that criminalize the behavior of pregnant women; (3) Fetal Protection Laws that impose complete bans on abortion …

Usda-Unl Artifacts Roadshow: The Development Of A 2d Archive Of Great Plains Projectile Points, Maia Behrendt
UCARE: Research Products
The Archaeological Survey is primarily concentrated through Federal and State lands. Nebraska like much of the Great Plains is overwhelmingly privately owned. As a consequence less than 1% of the state has been subject to professional survey. Private land owners, however, know of many archaeological sites that have not been documented. Engagement with the public about sites and about collected artifacts thus has the potential to greatly increase knowledge of the past.
Over the past three years the University of Nebraska and the USDA Forest Service have conducted “Artifacts Roadshows” to talk with land owners about private artifact collections. These …

Views On Identity And Services: English-Speaking Morris Residents Consider Latino Immigration, Christina Nyquist, Hannah Wahstrom
Undergraduate Research Symposium 2016
According to the US Census Bureau, the Latino population of Stevens County increased by almost 300% from 2000 to 2010. Previous research in the Morris community focused on the concerns of the Latino population and education staff at Morris public schools. This project examines the perspectives and experiences of English-dominant Morris residents, particularly civic leaders and business owners, to better understand how they view their communities and the changes taking place. Our project conducted 15 semi-structured interviews where questions focused on how participants understand their own identities, their knowledge about and interaction with the Morris Latino population, and the challenges …
