Las Jefas De Sudamérica: Coalition Party Discipline In Brazil, Chile, And Argentina, Adán S. Martínez
Las Jefas De Sudamérica: Coalition Party Discipline In Brazil, Chile, And Argentina, Adán S. Martínez
Latin American Studies Honors Projects
Political coalitions play an essential role in governance in Latin America. Scholars have analyzed policy changes as a way of measuring condition under which political actors govern. What factors contribute to coalitional stability? Based on analysis of three presidential administrations- Dilma Rousseff of Brazil (2010-2014), Michelle Bachelet of Chile (2006-2010), and Cristina Fernández of Argentina (2007-2015)- I argue that fiscal constraints, power centralization, institutional incentives, and social movement strength shape coalitional stability between the executive and legislative branches. This project concludes that while economic conditions affect coalitional stability, other factors including the distribution of power and grassroots movements play an …
The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson
The Farmers' Market Experience: Food To Fuel The Body And Soul, Ellery Brett Hinson
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This thesis examines the rise in popularity of the farmers' market through ethnographic research of the Fredericksburg Farmers' market. The farmers' market shopper has become a well known stereotype -- a white, upper-middle class suburbanite who sees it as their moral duty to support their local community and economy through their consumer power. I argue that these shoppers are buying more than just healthy local food. Their interactions with the market and vendors build an experience that feels more authentic and real than the larger capitalist society the market exists within. Through their consumption of the farmers' market and its …

Using Gis To Assist In Social Impact Assessments At Military Installations, Darcy Ayers
Using Gis To Assist In Social Impact Assessments At Military Installations, Darcy Ayers
Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee
Social Impact Assessments, evolving from NEPA Environmental Impact Assessments, can be used to address societal impacts resulting from large-scale human activities. GIS is a new tool that can be used to assess the spatial distribution of social impacts. This study used GIS and a Dust Impact Index model to identify the populations at risk to dust exposure from a military installation in Hawaii (Pohakuloa Training Area). This analysis is needed due to an Army Stryker brigade transformation that requires more vehicle training, which is resulting in an increase of dust generation. Factors used to determine the Dust Impact Index were …
“A Terrible Beauty Is Born”: A Panel On The 1916 Easter Rising, Meg A. Sutter
“A Terrible Beauty Is Born”: A Panel On The 1916 Easter Rising, Meg A. Sutter
The Gettysburg Compiler: On the Front Lines of History
On Wednesday, April 20, 2016, Gettysburg College students and faculty gathered in Penn Hall Lyceum to acknowledge the centennial of the Easter Rising. On April 24, 1916, the day after Easter Sunday, an armed rebellion led by Irish Republicans seized the General Post Office and other major buildings in the center of Dublin, and declared a “Republic of Ireland.” Approximately 1,600 members of the Irish Volunteers and Irish Citizen Army participated in the six-day rebellion. The Rising was an act to overthrow the British government in Ireland and provoke a full-out revolution. After a week, however, British forces squashed the …

Blood, Sweat, And Social Control: A Comparative Study Of Virginian And Jamaican Slavery, 1740-1820, Paul T. Knaak
Blood, Sweat, And Social Control: A Comparative Study Of Virginian And Jamaican Slavery, 1740-1820, Paul T. Knaak
All College Thesis Program, 2016-2019
This paper is a comparative study examining how slavery impacted Virginian and Jamaican society in the period 1740-1820. In both regions, slavery provided an important source of labor to facilitate intensive agriculture. However, differing geographic, demographic, and economic forces in Virginia and Jamaica served to forge two distinctly different slave societies. To explore how slavery impacted society in the two regions, and the tools slave-owners used to maintain control, the diaries of William Byrd of Virginia and Matthew Lewis of Jamaica are used. While in Jamaica slavery created fundamental societal instability, in Virginia slavery served as a tool to promote …

Why Did The Anthropologist Cross The Road: On The Anthropology Of Humor And Laughter, Christopher Michael Broyles
Why Did The Anthropologist Cross The Road: On The Anthropology Of Humor And Laughter, Christopher Michael Broyles
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
"Laughter is the best medicine," the old maxim goes. However, it wasn't until recently that scientists tested this theory to prove the validity of this claim. In my thesis, I investigate the origins of Euro-American inquiries of human laughter, from Plato to Hobbes, and demonstrate how historical imaginings of laughter impact the modern biosocial discourse of humor and laughing to see how far we have- or haven't- come in proving ourselves right. With this "anthropology of professionals," I will offer an anthropological account of what laughter means to humans in order to better understand why biosocial models of laughing fall …
"We The People": An Anthropological Analysis Of Property Rights Discourse And Practice, Enoila Afolayan
"We The People": An Anthropological Analysis Of Property Rights Discourse And Practice, Enoila Afolayan
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
While the everyday rhetoric around property rights tends to focus on land and land rights, I assert that beneath that rhetoric is the set of ideas about what it means to be a person by normative American standards. I look to anthropology to specify what these standards are, as well as review the discipline's other contributions to the concept of property rights. Following Bill Maurer (2003), I will suggest that property is an interesting topic for anthropology to study because of the duality of the concept: it is both ideology and jurisprudence. This dual role of property rights produces social categories …

Claiming The State: The Impact Of Human Rights Education And Legal Mobilization On Ghanaian Political Subjectivity, Catherine F. Buerger
Claiming The State: The Impact Of Human Rights Education And Legal Mobilization On Ghanaian Political Subjectivity, Catherine F. Buerger
Doctoral Dissertations
In this dissertation, I investigate the relationship between human rights participation and political subjectivity in Ghana. Specifically, I address two primary questions: 1) does participation in human rights-based activities have an impact on individual beliefs about democracy and the state? And, 2) if so, how do these altered beliefs manifest themselves in behavioral changes, including the way that individuals advance claims, settle disputes, and talk about the responsibilities of the state? To answer these questions, I conducted 12 months of ethnographic fieldwork in two low-income communities in Accra, Ghana. I argue that participating in human rights activities has had a …

Developmental Phenomenology: Epistemic Grounding, Infant Imitation, And Pairing, Stefano Giuseppe Vincini Mr.
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The present dissertation is comprised of three chapters. While the first chapter confines itself to Husserlian phenomenology, the other two pull together phenomenology and cognitive science, especially developmental psychology. Each chapter is an autonomous paper. However, the second and the third chapters are clearly connected. The claim defended in the second chapter figures as a premise in the third. In the first chapter, I argue that the phenomenological reduction makes possible a viable solution to the epistemological problem of whether the belief in the world's existence is justified. The chapter includes a relatively long exegetical session aimed at demonstrating that the …

Applying World Music Pedagogy Techniques In The Intermediate String Orchestra: A Curriculum For The Study And Performance Of Latin American Folk Music, Sarah Josephine Gongaware
Open Access Dissertations
The purpose of this project was to create an intermediate string orchestra curriculum which develops string techniques through the study and performance of music from Cuba, Brazil, Mexico, Argentina, and Puerto Rico. This year-long curriculum encompasses five, country-specific units which can be interspersed throughout the academic year. Each unit includes musical arrangements which vary in style, genre, or originating region. These arrangements are accompanied by lesson plans which include cultural and historical background information, listening suggestions, learning objectives, learning sequence, and assessment strategies. The musical arrangements seek to develop intonation, left-hand positions, bow distribution, string crossings, bowing styles, and reinforce …

The Ethiopian State: Perennial Challenges In The Struggle For Development, Hawi Tilahune
International Studies Honors Projects
This honors thesis examines the evolution of the state and nation-building processes in four historical periods in Ethiopia. I argue that, in the generational efforts towards consolidation and change, each period throws up acute tensions between an increasingly centralizing political apparatus and the civic and material existence of ethnic peripheries. These contradictions are apparent in the attempts to secure the country's territorial sovereignty under Menelik II, the efforts towards modernization by Emperor Haile Selassie, the militaristic-cum-Marxist drive under Col. Mengistu Haile Mariam, and the construction of a developmental state under the leadership of Prime Minister Meles Zenawi. While some achievements …
Where Have All The Teachers Gone? A Gendered Analysis Of The Teaching Occupation, Reavey Alcott Fike
Where Have All The Teachers Gone? A Gendered Analysis Of The Teaching Occupation, Reavey Alcott Fike
Political Science Honors Projects
The status of the teaching occupation is at a critical juncture. Across the United States, school districts are scrambling to fill teaching positions as the number of people entering the occupation declines. This shortage has made urgent the need to better understand why teachers enter the occupation and why they remain in teaching. Women constitute a vast majority of the teaching force and are therefore the primary subjects of studies on teacher recruitment and retention. Despite this fact, current literature largely ignores the importance of gender in the teaching occupation. In this study, I examine how the occupational crowding of …
