Like A Duck On Water: Chinese Academic Migrants In The U.S. And Their Suburban Weekend Chinese School, Jianping Xu
Like A Duck On Water: Chinese Academic Migrants In The U.S. And Their Suburban Weekend Chinese School, Jianping Xu
Dissertations - ALL
Current literature is scarce on the diverse experiences of hundreds of thousands of mainland Chinese who, since 1979, have come to the U.S. primarily for graduate study and mostly settled here afterwards in dispersed university or corporate jobs and suburban residences. After the Immigration Act of 1990, many of them have become visible experts in science and engineering. Yet their struggles as Chinese academic migrants simultaneously privileged by their educational backgrounds and disadvantaged by their outsider status in the U.S. often remain invisible. Possibly due to the myth of “model minority,” mainstream America has seen them as doing-well and well-behaving, …

Form And Function Of The Anthropoid Forefoot, Pedro J. Fernandez
Form And Function Of The Anthropoid Forefoot, Pedro J. Fernandez
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The transition to our uniquely human gait—terrestrial bipedalism—is the hallmark of our lineage. Abundant fossil evidence confirms that it was the adoption of a terrestrial bipedal gait that first set hominins apart from other apes. Therefore, a thorough understanding of postcranial functional morphology is necessary in order to gain as much insight as possible from the current known fossil material. When compared to our closest relatives, the living apes, it is clear that a suite of morphological changes have occurred in the human postcranial skeleton broadly, including modifications at the vertebral column, shoulder, wrist, hand, pelvis, ankle and foot. The …

The Human To Come: Representations Of Human In Literary Modernity’S Testimonial "I" | The Human To Come: Representations Of Human In Literary Modernity’S Testimonial "I", Kerry Suzanne Spooner
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
With the concern for human rights always present to this project, I explore in the initial chapters the precariousness of the first-person singular subjective “I†in both testimonial and fictional texts and its bearing on human rights. In practice, first-person narratives, whether as life-writing or fictional, are textual spaces in which writers’ concerns that deal with human conditions are frequently articulated. By examining the first-person narrative function in selected texts of Gertrude Stein, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, and Samuel Beckett, this dissertation shows how conceptual imaginings of the concept of the human and human embodiment are unsettled. These exemplar modernist …
The Answer Was Cooperative: How Anthropologists In Peru Redefined The "National Problem," 1948-1975, Ying-Ying Chu
The Answer Was Cooperative: How Anthropologists In Peru Redefined The "National Problem," 1948-1975, Ying-Ying Chu
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The scholarly literature has often depicted the agricultural cooperative model implemented during the Peruvian Agrarian Reform in 1969 as an imposed policy. This dissertation challenges the state-centric view by exploring intellectual and policy debates, which were strongly influenced by grassroots developments, between 1948 and 1975. It shows how the cooperative model evolved from a radical project of the left into a well-accepted strategy of rural development and flourished in Peru during the post-World War II era. This study highlights the critical role played by a new generation of anthropologists and other social scientists, who mediated between the government, international aid …

Intactivism: Understanding Anti-Male Circumcision Organizing In The U.S., Amanda Owyn Kennedy
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
While in the U.S. routine medical circumcision of male infants has long been justified on medical grounds, scholars have also pointed to surrounding discourses that suggest deeply held cultural prejudices, fears of sexuality, and racial contagion. However, little scholarship has addressed the questions of masculinity, despite a massive polemical literature that swirls around it. This dissertation takes those polemics, and several organizational efforts, as its source of data to understand the “Intactivist†movement as a social movement. Like all social movements, the Intactivist movement has many branches, is organizationally diverse and rhetorically diverse. So, how does the movement coalesce, and …

Religion-Related Research In The Journal Of Macromarketing, 1981-2014, Jenna M. Drenten, Kristy Mcmanus
School of Business: Faculty Publications and Other Works
This study provides a review of religion-related research published in the Journal of Macromarketing (JMK) from 1981 to 2014. A systematic review of the journal identifies 19 key articles at the intersection of religion and macromarketing. Both quantitative and qualitative approaches are utilized to review this body of work in terms of frequency, content, methodology, and authorship. Results reveal four categories of religion-related research in JMK: 1) the impact of religion on macromarketing issues, 2) the impact of macromarketing issues on religion, 3) religion as a theoretical perspective, and 4) religious groups/individuals as a research context. Opportunities for future research …
Detecting Evidence Of Systemic Inflammation From Osteological Markers In The Indian Knoll Population Of Ohio County, Kentucky., Krysta Wilham
Detecting Evidence Of Systemic Inflammation From Osteological Markers In The Indian Knoll Population Of Ohio County, Kentucky., Krysta Wilham
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Indian Knoll is an Archaic shell midden site located in the Green River region of west-central Kentucky, and was excavated twice in the first half of the 20th century. While Indian Knoll has been the subject of frequent bioarchaeological studies, the present study presents an osteological analysis of the relationships between skeletal markers commonly associated with local inflammatory processes, and that have the potential to be used as proxies for systemic inflammation. The analysis revealed a significant positive association in the presence of periodontal disease (PD) and periosteal lesions (PL), suggesting a potential underlying hyper-inflammatory status or phenotype. These …
Frozen Conflicts, De Facto States, And Enduring Interests In The Russian Near Abroad, Brittany A. Pohl
Frozen Conflicts, De Facto States, And Enduring Interests In The Russian Near Abroad, Brittany A. Pohl
Graduate Theses/Dissertations
The dissolution of the Soviet Union resulted in the establishment of fifteen sovereign nations and a number of separatist states concentrated in the greater Black Sea region. The latter, so-called de facto states, are the result of frozen conflicts that emerged as Moscow's grip over its territory weakened in the waning years of the USSR and dormant ethno-religious tensions erupted into internecine conflict. Separatists, ultimately with help from Moscow, were able to enshrine victories on the battlefield through ceasefires with metropolitan states that have held for over two decades. However, the issues surrounding these pseudo-states remain unsettled, and attempts at …

Heteroglossic Practices In A Multilingual Science Classroom, Lydiah Kananu Kiramba
Department of Teaching, Learning, and Teacher Education: Faculty Publications
This paper uses sociocultural theories of language learning to investigate how teachers and students navigate between monolingual institutional policies and the multilingual realities encountered in a rural Kenyan fourth-grade classroom. The paper addresses not only how learners’ communicative repertoires are deployed to make meaning in a foreign language instruction context but also the sociocultural significance of these communicative practices. Results illustrate how the science teacher used heteroglossic practices to mediate students’ access to literacy, hence, supporting the content learning and language development of students. Both the science teacher and the students preferred a more flexible use of language to make …

Beyond Regietheater: The Oper Frankfurt Behind The Curtain, 1979 - 2015, Cordelia Elizabeth Chenault
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This dissertation focuses on the Oper Frankfurt, a musical institution that has played an influential role in the development of operatic staging since the 1980s. Through an examination of productions staged at the house in two different periods (1979 – 1987 and 2010 – 2015), I pay particular attention to the ways in which these contemporary stagings contribute to a discourse about recent opera— particularly in Germany— and what has frequently been called Regietheater. This polemical term, often translated as “director’s theater,†connotes a provocative, theatrically experimental, even massively reenvisioned reading of an operatic work, propelled by a visionary stage …
Mediating Trans/Nationalism: Japanese ‘Jun’Ai’ (Pure-Love) In Popular Media Representations | Mediating Trans/Nationalism: Japanese €˜Jun’Ai’ (Pure-Love) In Popular Media Representations, I-Te Rita Sung
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Since the beginning of the 21st century, the jun’ai (pure-love) genre has flourished in Japan, both in works of popular literature and in film. This phenomenon coincides with a time when the country is seen by the media as being characterized by soshitsukan (sense of loss). In jun’ai films, the heroine is often the object of loss. This theme of loss in jun’ai therefore resonates with the Japanese social context, but this connection has not yet been fully elucidated. In this dissertation, I seek to explain why Japanese women, who are arguably treated as “other†within Japan, embody a transnationalism …
Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City | Appropriating A People’S Movement: The Relationship Between Community Gardens And Gentrification In New York City, Prita Lal
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In this dissertation, I study the intersection of community gardens with gentrification. In much of the gentrification scholarship, gentrification was studied from the macro level and was thought to result from changes in the housing market, hence being viewed as a top-down process in which the elite revitalized decaying urban neighborhoods by bringing capital into these areas and building higher end housing and services or was driven by consumer choices of privileged individuals (Smith 1979; Ley 1981). Some scholars maintained a connection between community gardens and gentrification, by insisting that gardens helped facilitate gentrification (Martinez 2010; Weissman 2012). I take …
A Spatio-Temporal Model Of Hunter-Gatherer Foraging Ecology Across The North American Great Plains Throughout The Paleoindian Period: Development Of Biological Theory And Statistical Methods To Link Human Evolutionary Biology, Ecology, And The Archaeological Record, Erik Roque Otárola-Castillo
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Hunter-gatherers spread to nearly every corner of the planet in large part due to their flexible ability to forage for high-quality foods in diverse environments. The study of human foraging behavior is therefore crucial to understanding the proximate and ultimate factors that have shaped human evolutionary history. Although not necessarily in an evolutionary context, the foraging behavior of Paleoindian hunter-gatherers in North America has been studied for over a century. Researchers have paid particular attention to Paleoindian foragers’ hunting of big game across the grasslands of the Great Plains, shedding light on “what†prey Paleoindians foraged, “where†foraging occurred on …
The Macro- And Micro-Anatomy Of Primate Volar Surfaces, Amanda Kathryn Kingston
The Macro- And Micro-Anatomy Of Primate Volar Surfaces, Amanda Kathryn Kingston
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
The soft tissues of the volar surfaces of primate hands and feet are the primary point of interaction between an individual animal and its environment and, as such, are likely to be under strong functional selection. These tissues serve three major functions: 1) force attenuation – the volar fat pads assist in attenuating reaction forces generated during grasping locomotion; 2) friction enhancement – the volar fat pads also act as viscoelastic surfaces that increase the coefficient of friction between the pads and substrate at low body weights; in addition, the ridged volar skin interlocks with and thus increases friction with …

Black Americans And The South African Anti-Apartheid Campaign In Portland, Oregon, Ethan Johnson
Black Studies Faculty Publications and Presentations
This paper argues that in order to understand the anti-Apartheid campaign in Portland, Oregon it must be located within the particular socio-historical context of race and racism in the city and state. Thus, Black people living in Portland had good reason to compare the Apartheid system in South Africa to their own experience. Therefore, the confluence of national and local issues that move the local anti-Apartheid campaign forward is examined; the paper documents the rise and development of critical organizations in the anti-Apartheid campaign in Portland; the paper focus on the closure of the Honorary South Africa Consulate in downtown …

Artifactual Evidence For The Role Of The Warp-Weighted Loom: The Transformation Of Textile Production In The Iron Age Levant, Thaddeus Nelson Nelson
Artifactual Evidence For The Role Of The Warp-Weighted Loom: The Transformation Of Textile Production In The Iron Age Levant, Thaddeus Nelson Nelson
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
This thesis presents a comparative study of textile tools and textile remains from the Iron Age II (c. 1000 – 500 BCE) Levant as a means to investigate textile production and procurement in international economies. Earlier studies interpret the increase in loom weights (components of warp-weighted looms) during the Iron Age II as evidence that weavers working with these looms were the predominant source of textiles in the Levant. Yet there is no consensus on the nature of the textiles woven on warp-weighted looms, which authors independently describe as fine trade commodities, tapestries for tribute payments, and coarse fabrics for …

Living successfully into older adulthood is becoming the new social norm. As one ages, the older adult may experience doubt and insecurity about one’s ongoing purpose in life, leading to feelings of failure and stagnation. The purpose of this paper is to explore the role of creativity as a requisite to living a successful life into older adulthood. By examining creativity from a variety of perspectives, social scientists and healthcare professionals can better understand the importance of empowering older adults to tap into their inner resources to promote creative expression leading to self-transformation and personal satisfaction. This paper will discuss …

© 2016 The Author(s). Evolution © 2016 The Society for the Study of Evolution. The ornaments used by animals to mediate social interactions are diverse, and by reconstructing their evolutionary pathways we can gain new insights into the mechanisms underlying ornamental innovation and variability. Here, we examine variation in plumage carotenoids among the true finches (Aves: Fringillidae) using biochemical and comparative phylogenetic analyses to reconstruct the evolutionary history of carotenoid states and evaluate competing models of carotenoid evolution. Our comparative analyses reveal that the most likely ancestor of finches used dietary carotenoids as yellow plumage colorants, and that the ability …

Jesus And The World Of Grace, 1968-2016: An Idiosyncratic Theological Memoir, William L. Portier
Theology and Religious Studies Faculty Publications
This article offers an impressionistic look back over the past five decades, from 1968 to 2016, in Catholic theology in the United States. At the heart of this story are Christology, the world of grace, and their relationship. This memoir unfolds in three parts: “Running on Empty, 1968–1980”; “Jesus and the World of Grace, 1980–2016”; “Can Liberal Catholics Come Back?” It identifies the most neuralgic question left to us from this period: How is Christ related to the world of grace?
