The Impact Of Study Abroad On Post-Graduation Job Search, Satoko Fukai
The Impact Of Study Abroad On Post-Graduation Job Search, Satoko Fukai
Capstone Collection
Following the tradition of a case study, this capstone research investigates the experience of recent graduates of the City University of New York (CUNY) who participated in study abroad programs managed by the College of Staten Island (CSI) between Fall 2010 and Summer 2015 and examines their perceptions of the post-graduation job search process. The data was collected through an online survey of 72 CUNY graduates and interviews with four survey respondents.
The research findings did not show that the employment rate of CUNY study abroad alumni were any better or worse than others. However, many alumni believed that their …
Embodiment In Traditional Chinese Medicine (Tcm) Discourse: Healing, Silence And The Miracle Cure, Kaicheng Zhan
Embodiment In Traditional Chinese Medicine (Tcm) Discourse: Healing, Silence And The Miracle Cure, Kaicheng Zhan
Dissertations - ALL
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), a thousand-year old medical practice originated in China, has stepped into the western world with globalization for years. TCM has entered the West with its foreign, distant and “unscientific” concepts despite the fact that medicine globalization is still a contested concept. My thesis aims to understand the embodied concepts of TCM through practitioner-patient interaction as culturally specific constructs. Among many TCM medical and philosophical concepts, I specifically focus on the healing, the silence and the miracle cure and how they are embodied and co-constructed by the practitioner and the patient during acupuncture, herb prescription and tuina …
Flannery O'Connor And The Poetics Of Prayer: The Analysis Of A Prayer Journal, Emily Wilson
Flannery O'Connor And The Poetics Of Prayer: The Analysis Of A Prayer Journal, Emily Wilson
Masters Theses
Prior to the recent discovery of her college prayer journal, kept between 1946 and 1947, knowledge of Flannery O’Connor’s religious influence and activity had been restricted to her letters and published works, such as Mystery and Manners and The Habit of Being. Works such as these shed light onto O’Connor’s background and religious views, making her Catholic faith obvious and explicit. This prayer journal exposes a new aspect of her faith – that is the personal relationship between herself and God shown through narrative. Her prayer journal makes it clear that her external expression of faith, showcased in most of …

Impromptu Domesticity: Housing Adaptations By The Marshallese In Springdale, Ar, Kera Lathan
Architecture Undergraduate Honors Theses
This study analyzes the relationship between people and their spatial environment through the lens of cultural practices and experiences. By using theories of cultural identity and activity patterns to compare spatial usage in two differing circumstances, this study will help to better understand the spatial needs of Marshallese living in Springdale, Arkansas.
The analysis uses two in-depth interviews to establish a base of qualitative data to understand the unique needs of this specific population. Through constructs such as spatial fluidity, sharing culture, and ability to adapt to new spatial practices, the two cases are compared to one another in order …
The Nature Of Kinship Care Relationships And Permanency Outcomes For Foster Children: Implications For Social Work Practice, Policy, And Research, Jolynne Batchelor
The Nature Of Kinship Care Relationships And Permanency Outcomes For Foster Children: Implications For Social Work Practice, Policy, And Research, Jolynne Batchelor
Social Work Dissertations - Archive
In recent history, kinship care has become the preferred alternative for placement of children in foster care as evidenced by its codification in federal and state policies. Though kinship caregivers tend to fare more poorly on socioeconomic factors than traditional foster and adoptive parents, children who experience kinship care tend to experience better safety and permanency than children in nonkin placements. The term “kinship” is most often broadly defined in child welfare and includes a child’s blood relatives and others who share no biological ties but have a close psychological relationship with the child. Yet, little is known to date …

Challenging Students At Fort Worth Christian School To Engage The Economically Disadvantaged In Their Community, James Hensley
Challenging Students At Fort Worth Christian School To Engage The Economically Disadvantaged In Their Community, James Hensley
Doctor of Ministry Theses and Dissertations
This doctor of ministry thesis presents a project in which I led a group of students at Fort Worth Christian School in experiences that challenged them to be more engaged with the economically disadvantaged in their community. The problem I identified at the outset of the project was a lack of such experiences along with troubling attitudes about poverty. Many students initially demonstrated ambivalence or even outright hostility toward the notion of helping people who live in poverty. I found such attitudes to be contrary to the teachings of Jesus and to my central beliefs as a Christian. I believed …
‘Hanging By Invitation: Capital Punishment, The Carceral Archipelago And Escalating Homicide Rates In The Caribbean And Africa’, Biko Agozino, Adeyinka A. Aderinto
‘Hanging By Invitation: Capital Punishment, The Carceral Archipelago And Escalating Homicide Rates In The Caribbean And Africa’, Biko Agozino, Adeyinka A. Aderinto
African Journal of Criminology and Justice Studies
The escalating rate of violent crime in the Caribbean has prompted calls for the resumption of capital punishment as an appropriate response. This paper reviews the philosophical debates and statistical evidence of the effects of previous executions on the rates of homicide and concludes that the role of the Privy Council in permitting capital punishment in the Caribbean allows us to critically reflect on the theory of industrialization by invitation that was attributed to Sir Arthur Lewis. A comparative analysis of evidence from other parts of the world would be used to present a case for the abolition of capital …
Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib
Basketmaker Ii Warfare And Fending Sticks In The North American Southwest, Phil R. Geib
Anthropology ETDs
Direct physical evidence and rock art, including head skin trophies, indicate that violence linked to warfare was prevalent among the preceramic farmers of the North American Southwest known as Basketmakers. The degree of intergroup conflict indicates that Basketmakers may have needed defense against atlatl darts. In the early 1900s archaeologists suggested that distinctive wooden artifacts served this purpose. Despite resembling Puebloan rabbit sticks, the first to report these S-shaped and flattened sticks with longitudinal facial grooves thought that hunting was not their purpose. Yet the sticks appear singularly inadequate for the task of atlatl dart defense. I evaluate the suggested …
Estimating Ancestry And Genetic Diversity In Admixed Populations, Anthony Joseph Koehl
Estimating Ancestry And Genetic Diversity In Admixed Populations, Anthony Joseph Koehl
Anthropology ETDs
Admixture is a form of gene flow that occurs when long separated populations come into contact and exchange mates. Admixture has been a primary mechanism in the formation of many modern human populations. The genetic characteristics of an admixed population are intermediate to, yet distinct from, those of its ancestors. In this dissertation, I investigate biological and statistical factors that enter into the analysis of admixed populations using genetic marker data. In chapters one and two, I use genotype data from published sources that contain 618 microsatellite loci. In chapter three, I simulate genotypes of 500 microsatellite loci. In chapter …

Young, Urban, Professional, And Kenyan?: Conversations Surrounding Tribal Identity And Nationhood, Charlotte Achieng-Evensen
Young, Urban, Professional, And Kenyan?: Conversations Surrounding Tribal Identity And Nationhood, Charlotte Achieng-Evensen
Educational Studies Dissertations
By asking the question “How do young, urban, professional Kenyans make connections between tribal identity, colonialism, and the lived experience of nationhood?,” the researcher engages with eight participants in exploring their relationships with their tribal groups. From this juncture the researcher, through a co-constructed process with participants, interrogates the idea of nationhood by querying their interpretations of the concepts of power and resistance within their multi-ethnic societies. The utility of KuPiga Hadithi as a cultural responsive methodology for data collection along with poetic analysis as part of the qualitative tools of examination allowed the researcher to identify five emergent and …

Regionalizing Institutional Food At Uri, Lauren A. Breene
Regionalizing Institutional Food At Uri, Lauren A. Breene
Senior Honors Projects
In recent years a demand for locally sourced food has arisen among students, faculty, and staff at the University of Rhode Island. Having now recognized this demand the hour is upon us to organize and create a movement that is as enlightened as it is revolutionary. Published material regarding regionalizing institutional food, however, is fragmented and difficult to apply to URI. The aim of this project is to collect and analyze the existing research in order to produce a cohesive text written in the context of URI. The paper details the motivation behind this movement in the form of a …
Characterizing Kepler Objects Of Interest Using The Algorithm Exonest, Bertrand Carado
Characterizing Kepler Objects Of Interest Using The Algorithm Exonest, Bertrand Carado
Physics
Recent observations across the galaxy have led to the conclusion that there exist many different extrasolar systems. Using photometric effects, the amount of data that has been produced on exoplanets has significantly increased and will continue to rise. Finding new methods of data analysis to broaden the spectrum of research has therefore become a necessity. Exonest is an algorithm currently in development that uses Bayesian methods, and notably nested sampling, to infer characteristics about an exoplanet from its observed light curve.
In this paper, Exonest was tested by being used to study three extra-solar systems: each containing a single confirmed …
Homophobia In Non-Heterosexuals And Their Families, Merel Hermans
Homophobia In Non-Heterosexuals And Their Families, Merel Hermans
Psychology
Homophobia is described as the negative attitudes towards non-heterosexual individuals. The evolutionary advantage of homophobia and of sexualities other than heterosexuality remain poorly understood within evolutionary psychology. This research extends Gallup’s 1995 research, in which people were found to respond more negatively towards same-sex pairs (i.e. imagining their daughter spending time with a lesbian mother, and a son spending time with a gay father), than opposite-sex pairs.Gallup’s original study did not include lesbian, gay, bisexual and queer (LGBTQ) individuals, however given the increasing acceptance of these groups it is now appropriate to expand this research to include these groups. One …
Intersectionality In Queer Activism: A Case Study, Haley Adams
Intersectionality In Queer Activism: A Case Study, Haley Adams
Undergraduate Theses
This paper explores the relationships between intersectionality and queer activism through a case study of the Louisville, Kentucky LGBTQ+ organization The Fairness Campaign. Intersectionality has been increasingly explored by academia, but rarely ventures beyond the “big three” categorical divisions of race, gender, and class; even rarer are studies of the practical application of intersectionality in activism, particularly queer activism. Through analysis of secondary data, I examine the ways in which intersectionality has, consciously or not, played a part in the history of the Fairness Campaign, as well as its role in the future of the organization.
Introduction: Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
Introduction: Theorizing The Secular In Tibetan Cultural Worlds, Holly Gayley, Nicole Willock
Philosophy Faculty Publications
This special issue on ‘The Secular in Tibetan Cultural Worlds’ originated in a panel on The Secular in Tibet and Mongolia at the Thirteenth Seminar of the International Association of Tibetan Studies held in Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia in 2013. To contextualize the contributions to this issue, spanning diverse temporal and geographic contexts, this Introduction raises theoretical concerns and discusses contested terminology regarding ‘religion’ and the ‘secular’ in Tibetan discourse. The authors situate local articulations of the secular within broader academic discussions of the varieties of Asian secularisms and offer a key intervention to complicate the secularization thesis and prevailing views of …

Overcoming Open Source Project Entry Barriers With A Portal For Newcomers, Igor Steinmacher, Tayana U. Conte, Christoph Treude, Marco Aurélio Gerosa
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Community-based Open Source Software (OSS) projects are usually self-organized and dynamic, receiving contributions from distributed volunteers. Newcomer are important to the survival, long-term success, and continuity of these communities. However, newcomers face many barriers when making their first contribution to an OSS project, leading in many cases to dropouts. Therefore, a major challenge for OSS projects is to provide ways to support newcomers during their first contribution. In this paper, we propose and evaluate FLOSScoach, a portal created to support newcomers to OSS projects. FLOSScoach was designed based on a conceptual model of barriers created in our previous work. To …

Representing Propaganda: Anti-Tyrannical Art Of The Greek, Roman, And French Populist Agendas, Katherine Norgard
School of Art, Art History, and Design: Theses and Student Creative Work
History is often shaped to fit certain agendas. Regular, flawed individuals become heroes and martyrs. The truth is often more complicated, as proven by the fact that Harmodios and Aristogeiton gained their fame by publicly slaughtering a well-liked ruler for encroaching on their pederastic relationship, Brutus gained his fame by murdering Julius Caesar for getting too close to his mother (and sister), and Jean-Paul Marat was exalted and worshiped for violence-inciting journalism.
Harmodios, Brutus, and Jean Paul Marat all serve as symbols of equalitarianism. Their public portrayals were crafted to be symbols that fit the [needs of] revolutionary agendas. As …
Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth
Prevalence Of Sexual Harassment And Assault In Uri Stem Graduate Students, Ivy Burns, Holly Dunsworth
Senior Honors Projects
There are many barriers for women in STEM careers (science, technology, engineering, and math); one, often untalked about, barrier is the prevalence of sexual harassment and assault. In the summer of 2014 the paper “Survey of Academic Field Experiences (SAFE): Trainees Report Harassment and Assault” by Clancy, et. al. was released and shed light on an issue facing many young women and men in science. According to the SAFE survey, a shocking amount of sexual harassment and assault was experienced by the, primarily female, researchers and very few knew how to report an incidence of assault. With this project I …
Burning Down The House! An Analysis Of Carbonized Textiles From The Waterman Site In Marshfield, Massachusetts, Nathanial Crockett
Burning Down The House! An Analysis Of Carbonized Textiles From The Waterman Site In Marshfield, Massachusetts, Nathanial Crockett
Major Papers by TMD Master of Science Students
The excavation of the seventeenth-century Robert Waterman house site in Marshfield, Massachusetts yielded thousands of carbonized textile fragments. Of these, 146 samples underwent analysis; the majority represented wool fabrics, which include a 3/1 reverse herringbone twill weave and plain weaves. No other seventeenth-century site has yielded a 3/l reverse twill herringbone fabric. Six fragments came from a silk satin ribbon with silver wrapped-core yarns; only two other contemporary archaeological sites have had a silk and metal ribbon.
The locations of the artifacts likely reflect preservation and artifact selection, not indication of use at the time of destruction. The burned wool …

Roman Britain In The Northeast: The Excavation And Interpretation Of Arbeia, South Shields, Eleanor Shotton
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
The research goal of this project was to understand the impact that the Roman Empire had upon the indigenous ‘traditional society’ of the northeastern British peoples at Arbeia, located in modern day South Shields. Within that broad goal, the focus was to determine if the influence of the Roman Empire cultivated a unique homogenization of Romano-British culture, or if both societies maintained their own cultures and lived side-by-side with little cultural interaction or meshing with one another, other than trading goods, etc. To seek out the answer to this research question, I conducted literary research on Roman fort practices and …

Sourcing The Sherds: An Analysis Of The Coarse Earthenware Ceramics From Trents Plantation In Barbados, Sara Mcnamara
Renée Crown University Honors Thesis Projects - All
Trents, originally known as Fort Plantation, was one of the five initial plantations established by the English in 1627. Since 2012, three different loci at Trents have been excavated: an outbuilding to the main house (Locus 1), enslaved laborers’ living quarters (Locus 2), and a cave site (Locus 3). Locus 1 is well stratified with clear divides between material dating to the pre-sugar era in the early 17th century and the following period from mid-17th to early 18th century. 18th and 19th century deposits cap this locus. Locus 2 dates from the mid-17th to early 19th century. Distinct floor areas …
