Ian Harper, Tobias Kelly & Akshay Khanna's The Clinic And The Court: Law, Medicine, And Elizabeth Mertz, Anthropology & The Role Of Social Science In Law (Review Essay), Anya Bernstein

Book Reviews

This essay reviews The Clinic and the Court (Ian Harper, Tobias Kelly, and Akshay Khanna eds., 2015) and The Role of Social Science in Law (Elizabeth Mertz ed., 2008). One edited volume focuses on medicine; the other on social science. Each shows how expert discourses interact with the expert discourse of law, being shaped by it and shaping it from the inside. And each provides a chance to consider how we can study the role of context in law: how to recognize moments where legal actors pick out aspects of the world as relevant, how to evaluate their interpretations of …

The Global strategy for women’s, children’s and adolescents’ health (2016–2030) provides a roadmap for ending preventable deaths of women, children and adolescents by 2030 and helping them achieve their potential for and rights to health and well-being in all settings.1 The global strategy has three objectives: survive (end preventable deaths); thrive (ensure health and well-being); and transform (expand enabling environments). These objectives are aligned with 17 targets within nine of the sustainable development goals (SDGs),2 including SDG 3 on health and other SDGs related to the political, social, economic and environmental determinants of health and sustainable development.

I Want To Believe: Kant, The X Files, And Cosmopolitical Unity, Jeremy Knickerbocker May 2016

I Want To Believe: Kant, The X Files, And Cosmopolitical Unity, Jeremy Knickerbocker

Cinesthesia

Kant’s final chapter of Anthropology from a Pragmatic Point of View, puts forth certain observations concerning the characteristics of human beings. In order for these observations to have rational validity as a proposed ‘human nature,’ however, Kant admits that it is necessary to compare between humans and another species of rational animal. Thus in an effort not to succumb to a naively anthropocentric thesis of nature, Kant still falls victim to his own anthropocentric privileging of rationality as a strictly human capacity—at least terrestrially speaking. While Kant fails to recognize any other earthly species as a rational animal, he nevertheless …

Stable Isotopic Evidence For Landscape Environmental Reconstructions, Kapthurin Formation, Kenya, David E. Leslie May 2016

Stable Isotopic Evidence For Landscape Environmental Reconstructions, Kapthurin Formation, Kenya, David E. Leslie

Doctoral Dissertations

Global, regional, and local changes in environments are critically important to understanding the selective pressures that affected the hominin lineage. Shifts in regional environments of East Africa, driven by solar insolation, have been associated with adaptive niches of hominins during the Pleistocene epoch, a time period that spans the inception of the genus Homo and the emergence of own species, Homo sapiens. Several hypotheses link the influence of changing environments and the evolution of the genus Homo, based on global drying trends during the Pleistocene, but also the increased variability of dry and wet cycles near the equator, …

Social Bonds And Recovery: An Analysis Of Hurricane Sandy In The First Year After Landfall, Patricia M. Clay, Lisa L. Colburn, Tarsila Seara May 2016

Social Bonds And Recovery: An Analysis Of Hurricane Sandy In The First Year After Landfall, Patricia M. Clay, Lisa L. Colburn, Tarsila Seara

Biology and Environmental Science Faculty Publications

Hurricane Sandy was one of the most devastating hurricanes to hit US shores. The brunt of the impact was felt in New York and New Jersey, especially among coastal towns such as fishing communities. A survey of these two states assessed social and economic impacts to 958 commercial and recreational fishermen and fishing-related business owners 12 months post-storm. Many businesses and communities were still struggling, due to heavy infrastructure damages and revenue losses with low insurance coverage, but also to disrupted fishing patterns for some species. Social bonds were credited by many as a key aid to recovery. Social bonds …

Forensic Science Developments And Judicial Decision-Making In The Era Of Innocence: The Influence Of Legal Process Theory And Its Implications, Sarah Lucy Cooper May 2016

Forensic Science Developments And Judicial Decision-Making In The Era Of Innocence: The Influence Of Legal Process Theory And Its Implications, Sarah Lucy Cooper

Richmond Journal of Law and the Public Interest

This article confirms the existence of these legal process-centric themes and considers some potential implications of these approaches. Part I briefly sets out key tenets of the legal process vision and provides some back- ground to the American Innocence Movement. Using examples from relevant case law, Part II examines the courts’ approaches thematically, demonstrating how the courts exhibit loyalty to the legal process vision. It also considers the implications of this loyalty, including that it can result in both the extraction of science from its social context and an awkward approach towards discerning between credible and incredible forensic science evidence …

Kitchen-Table Talk: Creating Authentic Engagement In K-12 Classrooms, Megan R. Williamson

Capstone Projects and Master's Theses

Language is deeply personal; it is also highly political. Because of these two facts it is extremely important that educators help students understand how to become agents of language. By empowering students’ kitchen-table language in the classroom, teachers aid the fight for sociolinguistic justice in the broader community.

Young Liberian Women In The Diaspora: The Dilemma Of Returning ‘Back Home’, Jedidia Yaa-Sakumah Adusei

Sustainability and Social Justice

Women in Liberia have played an important role in ending the civil war in Liberia. This paper addresses the question of return for young Liberian women living in the diaspora particularly in Rhode Island, and the motivation and dilemma they may face in the process of deciding to go ‘back home’. The division of Liberian citizens; Americo-Liberians and the indigenous Liberians created a series of civil wars, which later created a large number of Liberians to be resettled in the U.S. Rhode Island, is among one of the three states to have the largest population of Liberians in the U.S. …

Infrastructure And Exclusion: Roadbuilding, Extractive Industries And Environmental Degradation In The Case Of Iirsa Sur Through Southern Peru, Kimberly S. Farias

Sustainability and Social Justice

This paper considers the case of the Southern Interoceanic Highway, a major transportation corridor linking the Atlantic and pacific coasts through Southern Peru under the auspices of the Initiative for Regional Infrastructure in South America (IIRSA). The highway has raised significant social and environmental issues, including concern around the lack of mitigation planning on the part of the Peruvian government as well as the exclusion of civil society from participating in a review of the project. Based on GIS mapping of this highway and secondary research this paper finds that unprecedented migration into the region has contributed to an increase …

A Shifted Perspective On Affordable Micro Housing, Jonathan Reisman May 2016

A Shifted Perspective On Affordable Micro Housing, Jonathan Reisman

Architecture Senior Theses

This thesis contends that growing cities around the world are out-pricing the younger demographic from the urban fabric. It recognizes that constantly rising real estate markets are forcing millennials outside of city centers. It understands that socially, the younger demographic provide the energy and atmosphere required to keep the city alive, and ultimately believes that in order fro young professionals to reclaim their position int he hosing market, a new typology of hosing need to be established.

Such housing takes increasing urban density into consideration, and provides an appropriate dwelling supply for expensive cities moving forward. It is a typology …

Correlation Between A Students’ Academic Performance And Caffeine Intake, Mary Bindbeutel May 2016

Correlation Between A Students’ Academic Performance And Caffeine Intake, Mary Bindbeutel

Undergraduate Psychology Research Methods Journal

On most college campuses around the country, one would find it difficult not to run into a coffee cart or a vending machine chock-full of caffeinated beverages. The purpose of this study was to determine whether or not there is a correlation between a student’s academic performance and their daily intake of caffeine. I hypothesized that there would be a negative correlation between these variables. That is, I predicted those who reported low levels of caffeine intake would have higher levels of academic performance. This study consisted of 17 participants who were surveyed over their daily caffeine intake and their …
