Local Herpetological Knowledge In The North, Joshua Taylor Ream, XíXch'i ToowóO May 2016

Local Herpetological Knowledge In The North, Joshua Taylor Ream, XíXch'i ToowóO

Fisheries

Amphibians are important components of ecological communities and of human cultures, even in high northern latitudes where species diversity for this group is low. Despite their ecological and cultural value, and their ability to serve as indicators of ecosystem health, information on the biology of amphibians in Alaska and high latitude segments of their geographic range is limited. By combining local knowledge of herpetology and citizen science approaches, it is possible to circumvent some of the logistical constraints of research in a vast, sparsely populated region to enhance scientific understanding of amphibian populations. The first objective of this investigation is …

Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky May 2016

Narratives On Wheels: Mobility, Language, And Representation On Egyptian Roads, Noha Ezz El-Din Firky

The Undergraduate Research Journal

In this brief exploration, I try to look at a form of popular expression which is microbuses bumper stickers and to look more specifically at the statements printed on these stickers as a form of public expression, representation, and possibly resistance on the part of their agential producers--the vehicles' drivers. I provide a preliminary content analysis for some of the statements I gathered, as well as look at the context of production and dissemination of these stickers. Finally, I try to argue for regarding these statements as a conscious mode of self-expression and self-representation for people otherwise thought of as …

A Quantitative Genetic Analysis Of Craniofacial Variation In Baboons, Jessica Lynn Joganic May 2016

A Quantitative Genetic Analysis Of Craniofacial Variation In Baboons, Jessica Lynn Joganic

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is an explication of baboon craniofacial variation and its genetic basis. Intraspecific variation is the result of input from and complex interactions among genetic information, functional demands, and developmental processes. The relative effect of each of these on craniofacial variation, as well as the degree of inter-trait covariance, determines whether traits can respond to selection and what that response might look like. Using a sample of pedigreed baboons, I quantify craniofacial variation to address specific questions regarding the distribution and magnitude of phenotypic, genetic, and environmental variation patterns. In addition, I identify regions of the genome containing genetic …

A Paleoethnobotanical Study Of Two Classic Maya Sites, El Peru-Waka And La Corona, Clarissa Cagnato May 2016

A Paleoethnobotanical Study Of Two Classic Maya Sites, El Peru-Waka And La Corona, Clarissa Cagnato

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Archaeological investigations in the Maya region abound, yet there is much that we do not know regarding the use of plants in both the domestic and ritual sphere. This study focuses on ancient plant use at La Corona and El Peru-Waka, two sites in northwestern Petén, Guatemala, occupied during the Late Classic and Terminal Classic (ca. A.D. 600- 950). I utilized macro- and microbotanical data to shed light on the diets and ritual activities of ancient people living at these sites. Specifically, I consider what plants were consumed at the household level and which were utilized in the ritual sphere …

Negotiation In All Its Phases: Theory And Data On Behavior Before, During, And After Bargaining., Daisung Jang May 2016

Negotiation In All Its Phases: Theory And Data On Behavior Before, During, And After Bargaining., Daisung Jang

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Negotiation consists of a sequence of activities that occur before, during, and after the bargaining process of exchanging offers and counteroffers (Geertz, 1978; Williams, 1985; Zartman & Berman, 1983). It is a central process in many social contexts, especially those that involve exchange of goods or resources or redefining patterns of interdependence, such as when making sales, or business acquisitions. Because of its importance in social life, expert practitioners and social scientists have been attempting to investigate and understand this process for a very long time. The resulting prescriptive theories of negotiation serve to guide the thoughts and actions of …

“Evil Isn’T Born, It’S Made”: As Communicated In Once Upon A Time, Eleanor Hodapp May 2016

“Evil Isn’T Born, It’S Made”: As Communicated In Once Upon A Time, Eleanor Hodapp

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

In the television series Once Upon A Time, evil is portrayed as a circumstance rather than a character trait. Characters shift toward and away from evil; the evil character suddenly shows redeeming qualities and the good character becomes consumed with revenge. This unusual approach to depicting evil in a television adaptation centering upon fairy tales rejects the clear distinction between good and evil typically present in the written stories. A close reading of Regina and Snow’s narratives and rhetorical analysis of visuals in the show reveal good and evil as fluid concepts – developing and shifting within and between …

The Function Of Improvised Song Creation For Individuals With Asd In Formation Of Identity: A Grounded Theory Investigation, Jesse Asch May 2016

The Function Of Improvised Song Creation For Individuals With Asd In Formation Of Identity: A Grounded Theory Investigation, Jesse Asch

Theses & Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the function of improvised song creation for two individuals with autism spectrum disorder in the formation of self-identity using grounded theory analysis. Data were collected through video recordings of archival clinical sessions. The method included analyses of musical, lyrical, and interpersonal transcriptions of sessions. The transcription process included a combination of holistic listening and Nordoff-Robbins Music Therapy indexing techniques. A grounded theory coding process was employed to identify concepts and categories related to the broader context of identity formation from patterns in the data and to develop theoretical conclusions from these concepts. …

Foraging Choices Of Vampire Bats In Diverse Landscapes: Potential Implications For Land‐Use Change And Disease Transmission, Daniel G. Streicker, Jacob E. Allgeier May 2016

Foraging Choices Of Vampire Bats In Diverse Landscapes: Potential Implications For Land‐Use Change And Disease Transmission, Daniel G. Streicker, Jacob E. Allgeier

KIP Articles

In Latin America, the common vampire bat Desmodus rotundus is the primary reservoir of rabies, a zoonotic virus that kills thousands of livestock annually and causes sporadic and lethal human rabies outbreaks. The proliferation of livestock provides an abundant food resource for this obligate blood‐feeding species that could alter its foraging behaviour and rabies transmission, but poor understanding of the dietary plasticity of vampire bats limits understanding of how livestock influences rabies risk. We analysed individual‐ and population‐level foraging behaviour by applying δ 13 C and δ 15 N stable isotope analysis to hair samples from 183 vampire bats captured …

The People's Poets: Literature Born Of The Texas Singer-Songwriter Movement Of The Last Forty Years, Phyllis M. Dunham May 2016

The People's Poets: Literature Born Of The Texas Singer-Songwriter Movement Of The Last Forty Years, Phyllis M. Dunham

LSU New Orleans Theses and Dissertations

The People’s Poets of Texas: Literature Born Within the Singer/Songwriter Tradition of the Last Forty Years is a creative nonfiction exploration of the poetry found within the songs of multiple generations of modern Texas singer/songwriters and a case for the consideration of their work as a genuine regional literature. Studying the roots of Texas music, the musicality of Texan manners of speech and storytelling, and re-examining the Austin, Texas music scene of the 1970s that brought a national focus to the organic, reciprocal manner in which Texas music is traditionally experienced, radically altered the ways in which the songs were …
