Designing & Assessing An Ethical Global Service Learning Experience, Alexandra M. Jones, Chelsey Peterson, Casey L. Janko
Celebration of Learning
We discuss a service-learning experience in a developing country that we designed to be ethical not only for the people we served, but also for the students who served. We assessed the students' intercultural sensitivities and skills before, during, and after their participation in the SLE, and present our findings.

From Kongri To Diri Ak Djondjon: Slavery, Creolisation And Culinary Genesis In Saint-Domingue And Independent Haiti, Anthony F. Buccini
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper discusses the genesis of the cuisine of Haiti which is one of a relatively limited number of cuisines in the world that is genuinely a creole cuisine. This was further cemented by the Haitian Revolution's abrupt ending of slavery and the far-reaching reduction of European influence which allowed its creolised way of life to develop in a setting that was freer of external influence than other Atlantic and Indian Ocean creole societies.
Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, Cyndi Shein, Emily Lapworth
Say Yes To Digital Surrogates: Strengthening The Archival Record In The Postcustodial Era, Cyndi Shein, Emily Lapworth
Journal of Western Archives
Shein and Lapworth demonstrate how employing “scan-and-return” practices to strengthen and diversify archival collections is a creative and responsible way to provide researchers with equitable and ongoing access to a more inclusive and democratic historical record. The authors review some of the main archival theories and practices of the postcustodial era to show how their position is built on professional values and widely-accepted premises. They explain how and why UNLV Special Collections has joined a community of practice that validates stewardship of digital surrogates in support of the preeminent mandate of archives to preserve and provide broad access to cultural …

Eater/Eaten: What Revolves Around Who?, David Szanto
Dublin Gastronomy Symposium
This paper examines a number of experimental moments when things were eaten and things ate - in multiple senses. Together, they probe a key question about gastronomic ontologies: when it comes to arranging food knowldege, what ordering systems make sense? It is a question that may seem inane, imaginative, and/or irrelevant, depending on one's motives and perspectives. Unpacking this question may help to reconfigure some of the other questions address in this area of study.

Rediscovering Religion And Secularism: A Critique Of A Critique, Magid Shihade
Rediscovering Religion And Secularism: A Critique Of A Critique, Magid Shihade
Social Transformations Journal of the Global South
In this paper, I will discuss the academic critique of secularism that is emanating from Western academic discourse and some of its limitations. I will also discuss how this scholarly critique of secularism has been used in Palestine, among other places, to defend symbolic as well as real repressive social norms within Muslim societies, and to defend the call for creating an Islamist state. This discussion is to be taken in the context of the Arab Spring, where political Islamist movements that embody fantasies about a certain past are calling for a return to a “real,” “non-secular,” “Islamic” state. Both …

Poitín – A Spirit Of Rebellion And Inspiration, James Peter Murphy
Poitín – A Spirit Of Rebellion And Inspiration, James Peter Murphy
Conference papers
Abstract: Poitín is Ireland’s most ancient spirit distilled in rural locations for many centuries, its dark and chequered history continues to intrigue tourists and people alike, often referred to as Ireland’s Mescal, Cachaca or Grappa. This drink which preserved many rural communities and saved them from falling into poverty, driven underground for over 300 years it is making a significant comeback. This paper will explore the evolution of this ancient Irish spirit from its earliest mentions to its modern day popularity in the world of distilled spirits. Poitín is history in a bottle it is inextricably woven into the fabric …
An Account Of Virtue And Solidarity From Pakikipagkapuwa, Jacklyn A. Cleofas
An Account Of Virtue And Solidarity From Pakikipagkapuwa, Jacklyn A. Cleofas
Philosophy Department Faculty Publications
There has been a resurgence of interest among philosophers in Asian conceptions of virtue. In this paper I derive and develop an account of virtue in general, and solidarity in particular, from two Filipino concepts: pakikipagkápuwâ (comradeship with fellow humans) and pakikiramdám (emotional sensitivity). The primary source used for the discussion of these concepts is Filipino psychology, which allows for an account of virtue that is grounded in a particular cultural practice. The ensuing account of virtue, however, is not just contextsensitive; it also showcases an aspect of Filipino culture that has a potential for universality. More specifically, the account …

How Liberal Korean And Taiwanese Textbooks Portray Their Countries’ “Economic Miracles”, Frances Chan
Student Work
A 2015-2016 William Prize for best essay in East Asian Studies was awarded to Frances Chan (Timothy Dwight College '16) for her essay submitted to the Department of History, “How Liberal Korean and Taiwanese Textbooks Portray their Countries’ “Economic Miracles”.” (Peter C. Perdue, Professor of History, advisor.)
Frances Chan’s essay “How Liberal Korean and Taiwanese Textbooks Portray their Countries’ “Economic Miracles,” is a fascinating exploration of the creation of historical memory as seen in textbooks on the history of postwar economic development in Korea and Taiwan. Drawing on her remarkable linguistic skills in both Korean and …

Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch
Fetal Personhood In The Christian Philippines: The View From A Visayan Island, Hannah C. Bulloch
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Issues of fetal personhood have been controversial in the Philippines in the context of reproductive health debates, but little is understood about how ordinary Filipinos construct fetal and early infant personhood in the context of their everyday lives. Thisarticle draws on ethnographic research in Siquijor, a Central Visayan island with a Catholic population. Based on conversations about pregnancy and miscarriage, I show that unlike notions promoted by elites of the Catholic Church, which fix personhood to the moment of conception, local notions of personhood are processual. Significantly, ensoulment, while thought to occur at conception, is not sufficient to produce a …

Anthropology And The Aldub Nation: Entertainment As Politics And Politics As Entertainment, Raul Pertierra
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
The links between politics and entertainment in the Philippines are well known, but few have noted these links in the media phenomenon known as AlDub. As a subpart of Eat Bulaga, a long-standing midday TV show, AlDub has gained a life of its own, giving its actors national and even global prominence. How was this possible? Was it happenstance or do basic interests and structures explain its popularity? A deep ethnographic account of how popular culture is generated, reproduced, and consumed reveals its anchoring in material structures the interests of which are often disguised or unacknowledged. Anthropology provides a way …

Curating Architectural Spaces : A Way Of Architecture Production, Cheng Yang
Curating Architectural Spaces : A Way Of Architecture Production, Cheng Yang
Masters Theses
Once I was a painter and a curator in art museum and I find similarities between curating and architecture. I define curating by firstly building relationships between curator’s narrative and objects implicitly or explicitly, and then arrange the sequence of the objects along with narrative. And architecture is an organized spatial system, it is designed according to architect’s narrative about the holistic condition of program, user, site. As an analogy, curator’s narrative is the principle to build relationship and design the sequence, while architect’s narrative is the principle to execute specific action in organizing spaces as part of architecture production …

Personal, Family, Local Entrepreneurship. Economic Initiative At The Beginning Of Xxith Century At Nowy Targ Commune, Marta Sałyga
Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski
This paper shows an anthropological analysis of economic initiatives at Nowy Targ Commune in Podhale. Firstly, cultural background is described, in which family and family farm have a crucial meaning. Furthermore, such oppositions as: home–external world/state, intellectual work-manual labor, to work–to moonlight, and also long-term tradition of labour migration are discussed. This article proposes a wide perspective of business’ analysis, containing family causation of an individual. The Internet becomes an essential aspect of present, highlanders’ entrepreneurship. Popularization of this new medium not only brought new economic possibilities for Podhale dwellers, but also highlighted many social differences. The most important ones, …

This investigation is about the edge, hybrid space, and public engagement in the urban environment in Washington, DC. There are three phases of this research. In Phase 1, the investigation focuses on clarifying the definitions of terms such as edge, transition, vegetated, and constructed spaces. In Phase 2, the study explores methods of understanding urban fabric based on the experiential and physical analysis. In Phase 3, the investigation generates critiques of the site conditions between Union Station and Union Square in Washington, DC.
The film The Social Life of Small Urban Spaces by William Whyte, which shows people’s different behaviors …

From Marginality To Mattering: Linguistic Practices, Pedagogies And Diversities At A Community-Serving Senior College, Andrea Springirth, Hannah Göppert
Publications and Research
The cultural diversification of colleges and universities which initially targeted the needs of a specific minoritized group raises questions concerning the inclusion of every individual and the maintenance of the advances which have been made for the original population. This paper provides insight into the challenges and merits at the intersection of linguistic and racial/ethnic diversification within CUNY’s Medgar Evers College. Historically tied to the Black Campus Movement, the college is committed to being an agent of social transformation for the surrounding community. Aiming to understand the perspectives on language and diversity of the key stakeholders at the college, a …

The ‘Age Of Faith’ And The ‘Age Of Knowledge’: Secularism And Modern Tibetan Accounts Of Yogic Power, Annabella C. Pitkin
The ‘Age Of Faith’ And The ‘Age Of Knowledge’: Secularism And Modern Tibetan Accounts Of Yogic Power, Annabella C. Pitkin
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
This paper approaches the dynamics of secularization and post-secularism among Tibetan Buddhists through the lens of ‘miracle’ narratives, both oral and textual, arguing that such narratives function as a lightening-rod for complexities surrounding secularism and its religious doubles. Tibetan Buddhist genres of historical and biographical writing brim with accounts of extraordinary yogic abilities (Skt. siddhi, Tib. dngos grub and Skt. ṛddhi, Tib. rdzu ‘phrul)), ranging from clairvoyance to flight. Combining interviews with Tibetan Buddhist scholars and practitioners, oral commentaries, and textual analysis, I engage here with analyses of yogic power articulated by three contemporary, primarily diaspora-based Tibetan Buddhist scholar-practitioners. I …
The 'Look Of Tibet' Without Religion: A Case Study In Contemporary Tibetan Art In Lhasa, Leigh Miller
The 'Look Of Tibet' Without Religion: A Case Study In Contemporary Tibetan Art In Lhasa, Leigh Miller
HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies
The artworks and career phases of the Lhasa contemporary artist Gadé illustrate the complex entanglement of religion and the secular in modern Lhasa, while illuminating broader trends in contemporary Tibetan art as a cultural formation of local mediation of modernity’s strong influences. While the past is vital to Gadé, he is driven to “locate traditional Tibetan art in a contemporary context” where it can also be “detached from religion,” raising questions about representations of Tibet and the cultural future. He takes a secular approach to the role of artists in society that, along with his cohorts in the emergent contemporary …
