Sexual Violence As The Language Of Border Control: Protecting Exceptional Difference, Miriam Ticktin Dec 2016

Sexual Violence As The Language Of Border Control: Protecting Exceptional Difference, Miriam Ticktin

Publications and Research

When I first arrived in the Paris region in 1999 to do research on the struggle by undocumented immigrants (les sans papiers) for basic human rights, discussions of violence against women were remarkably absent from the public arena. Nongovernmental organizations and researchers had begun to broach the topic, but with little public visibility. However, this changed in late 2000, with a media explosion on the issue of les tournantes, or the gang rapes committed in the banlieues of Paris. Such tournantes involve boys »taking turns« with their friends’ girlfriends, both parties usually being of Maghrebian or North …

"Gained In Translation": Building The African Diaspora Through Linguistic Transposition In 20th Century Poetry, Cyril Vettorato Dec 2016

"Gained In Translation": Building The African Diaspora Through Linguistic Transposition In 20th Century Poetry, Cyril Vettorato

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language

This paper examines the relationship between language and diaspora by trying to look beyond the question of what befalls native tongues in the countries of arrival. The experience of forced migration undergone by African people brought to the Americas might have dispossessed them from their ancestral tongues, but it did not prevent them from aspiring to use language, be it the language of the former slave owner, to express their identity and shared historical experience. Using the example of American poet Langston Hughes and his Cuban peer Nicolás Guillén, this article will highlight the way poets from the African diaspora …

Changing From Within: Immigration And Japan, Brian Gaynor Dec 2016

Changing From Within: Immigration And Japan, Brian Gaynor

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language

Although Japan’s demographic decline is well known, the slow but steady increase in the country’s immigrant population has been less acknowledged. Despite this continuing influx of foreigners the Japanese state still has no coordinated immigration policy that clearly addresses such issues as residency, employment, education, and access to social services. Rather it is at the local level that towns and villages all across the country are having to develop ad hoc responses to the growing number of foreigners resident in their communities. Hitherto most research into immigrants’ lives has focused on what are known as ‘diversity points’, large urban areas …

Using Qualitative Methods For The Analysis Of Adult Immigrants’ L2 Needs: Findings From A Research Project In Greece Focusing On School-Parents Communication, George Androulakis, Efi Mastorodimou, Riki Van Boeschoten Dec 2016

Using Qualitative Methods For The Analysis Of Adult Immigrants’ L2 Needs: Findings From A Research Project In Greece Focusing On School-Parents Communication, George Androulakis, Efi Mastorodimou, Riki Van Boeschoten

CALL: Irish Journal for Culture, Arts, Literature and Language

In the Greek context of economic crisis and of emerging xenophobic ideas and discourse, this article presents some findings from a research project which had the ambition to give voice to immigrants in Greece about their own language and communication needs. The target group of the project were immigrant parents, whose children attend public schools in the area of Volos. Communication between schools and immigrant families is fragmentary or non-existent, causing frustration for parents and teachers. The ELMEGO project used focus groups in order to construct social meaning related to migrant discourse, and shed light on it from an interdisciplinary …

Sagas And Artifacts: How Tales From The Past Help The Interpretation Of Archaeological Remains, Bridgette Hulse Dec 2016

Sagas And Artifacts: How Tales From The Past Help The Interpretation Of Archaeological Remains, Bridgette Hulse

Honors Capstone Projects

I argue that historians and archaeologists should consider the Viking perspective in the form of sagas when analyzing Viking activity in England, in tandem with the Anglo-Saxon record. This way, it is possible to garner a more complex understanding of the past, as scholars can take both the Viking and Anglo-Saxon view in account in order to complete the picture. In addition, this allows archaeologist to interpret Viking artifacts from a Viking cultural perspective, not the Anglo-Saxon perspective. This removes a middle-man from the analytical process and allows archaeologist to consider what would be closer to a primary source on …

Here And There: Code Switching And The Politics Of Spanish-Language Identity In Latina Women's Writing, Marilou. Terrones Dec 2016

Here And There: Code Switching And The Politics Of Spanish-Language Identity In Latina Women's Writing, Marilou. Terrones

Honors Capstones

Language is as much a form of communication as it is a form of identity. This research focuses on Latino interactions where code-switching is used, revealing who the characters are and what is significant to them. I analyzed when and how often characters turned to CS during their interactions, so that I would understand why. I learned that CS occurs in between languages and dialects. CS, then, isn't only used by speakers who include multiple languages in each sentence; it is also used when we change the tone of our speech. It's important to recognize that CS is not a …

An Assessment Of Implementation Of Community - Oriented Primary Care In Kenyan Family Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes, Ian Nelligan, Jacob Shabani, Stephanie Taché, Gulnaz Mohamoud, Megan Mahoney Dec 2016

An Assessment Of Implementation Of Community - Oriented Primary Care In Kenyan Family Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Programmes, Ian Nelligan, Jacob Shabani, Stephanie Taché, Gulnaz Mohamoud, Megan Mahoney

Family Medicine, East Africa

Background and objectives: Family medicine postgraduate programmes in Kenya are examining the benefits of Community-Oriented Primary Care (COPC) curriculum, as a method to train residents in population-based approaches to health care delivery. Whilst COPC is an established part of family medicine training in the United States, little is known about its application in Kenya. We sought to conduct a qualitative study to explore the development and implementation of COPC curriculum in the first two family medicine postgraduate programmes in Kenya.

Method: Semi-structured interviews of COPC educators, practitioners, and academic stakeholders and focus groups of postgraduate students were conducted with COPC …

Re-Conceptualizing Research Misconceptions: Top Ten Myths Demystified, Faisal S. Al-Maamari Dr

i.e.: inquiry in education

It is generally acknowledged that novice researchers may not be adequately prepared to engage in/with research and that an increasingly widening divide exists between researchers and teachers, and therefore between research and practice. To explore this gap, this paper addresses ten of the most popular misconceptions novice researchers hold in engaging in research about their practice, and offers advice to these researchers towards teacher research engagement. Amongst the issues I describe are the various forms of research, the relationship between research and reflective or exploratory practice, issues pertaining to sampling, methods of data collection, research site access and the juxtaposition …

Retracing Augustine’S Ethics: Lying, Necessity, And The Image Of God, Matthew Puffer Dec 2016

Retracing Augustine’S Ethics: Lying, Necessity, And The Image Of God, Matthew Puffer

Christ College Faculty Publications

Augustine’s exposition of the image of God in Book 15 of On The Trinity (De Trinitate) sheds light on multiple issues that arise in scholarly interpretations of Augustine’s account of lying. This essay argues against interpretations that posit a uniform account of lying in Augustine—with the same constitutive features, and insisting both that it is never necessary to tell a lie and that lying is absolutely prohibited. Such interpretations regularly employ intertextual reading strategies that elide distinctions and developments in Augustine’s ethics of lying. Instead, I show how looking at texts written prior and subsequent to the texts usually consulted …

The Impact Of Short-Term International Volunteers On The Capacity Development Of A School For Students With Disabilities In The Caribbean, Edwin L. Blanton Iii Dec 2016

The Impact Of Short-Term International Volunteers On The Capacity Development Of A School For Students With Disabilities In The Caribbean, Edwin L. Blanton Iii

Theses & Dissertations

This qualitative study contributes to the field of international volunteerism by giving insight into the impact of short-term international volunteerism on the capacity development of a school for students with disabilities in the Caribbean. In the United States over one million people volunteer abroad annually, with 70-80% of these volunteers serving eight weeks or less (Lough, 2010). However, whether the international volunteers are having an impact on the capacity development of the population served remains to be seen. This study focused on an aspect of short-term international volunteerism that has largely been ignored – how short-term international volunteers impact the …

The aim of this study was to answer the question, according to the Competing Values Framework, what is the organizational climate of the Abilene-Taylor County Public Health District (ATCPHD)? Organizational climate for this study refers to the collective perceptions of employees on their interactions with their peers, management, and the organization. This study surveyed the 64 employees at the ATCPHD with the Organizational Climate Measure (OCM). Forty employees participated in the study. The study determined that the climate of the ATCPHD, according to Competing Values Framework (CVF), was the Human Relations organizational climate with a secondary climate of Relational Goals. …

American Muslims: How The “American Creed” Fosters Assimilation And Pluralism, James R. Moore Dec 2016

American Muslims: How The “American Creed” Fosters Assimilation And Pluralism, James R. Moore

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

This article examines the status of American Muslims in the United States in relationship to other cultural groups and some of the widespread stereotypes that plague Muslims in contemporary society. Much has been written about the discrimination faced by Muslims, particularly after the September 11, 2001 attacks, spawned by religious, racial, and ethnic bigotry. Some polls show many Americans harbor some prejudices against Muslims, but these prejudices have not resulted in widespread violence or discrimination; although there has been some violence and discrimination experienced by some Muslims, the empirical data show that the majority of American Muslims are very successful …

Hannah Arendt And Natives As Extras: Towards An Ontology Of Palestinian Presence?, Francesco Melfi Dec 2016

Hannah Arendt And Natives As Extras: Towards An Ontology Of Palestinian Presence?, Francesco Melfi

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

The essay grew out of Hannah Arendt’s reflection on the roles and uses of the mask, a meditation on the ontology of the transient public figure or persona vs. one that restitutes the person to the unadulterated Selbstdenken dimension of the Epicurean philosopher-in-hiding. The author individuates in the resulting caesura between the donning and the taking off of the mask the primal source of that paradox in Hanna Arendt’s political behavior that alternately compelled her to confront the ontological presence of the Palestinian people, and made her withdraw into philosophical hiding without ever really coming to terms with it. In …

Teaching Secondary Mathematics And Science Contents Embedded In Historical And Cultural Contexts: Challenges And Possibilities, Roland Pourdavood

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Many preservice teachers come to understand that they must cross the boundaries of their own familiar cultural and historical contexts in order to meet the needs of diverse students. This qualitative and descriptive study examines the evolution of secondary preservice teachers’ views on teaching and learning mathematics and science in historical and cultural contexts. Data were collected throughout participants’ enrollment in a semester-long course entitled Perspectives on Science and Mathematics, which is taken in conjunction with student teaching. Data sources included university classroom observations, preservice teachers’ verbal and written responses to class discussions, reading assignments, and course activities. Common themes …

On Confucius’S Ideology Of Aesthetic Order, Li Wang Dec 2016

On Confucius’S Ideology Of Aesthetic Order, Li Wang

Cultural Encounters, Conflicts, and Resolutions

Advocating order, order for all things, and taking order as beauty is the core element of Confucius’s aesthetic ideology. Confucius’s thought of aesthetic order is different from others of the “hundred schools of thoughts” in the pre-Qin period, and is also diverse from the Western value of aesthetic order. Confucius’s thought of aesthetic order has its own unique value system, which has become the mainstream value of aesthetic order in the Chinese society for 2000 years until today, after being integrated with the Chinese feudal imperial system in early Han Dynasty. This paper illustrates Confucius’s ideology of aesthetic order from …

Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact Of The North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process On Teacher Effectiveness, Professional Growth, And Attitudes Toward Teaching, Kim H. Case Dec 2016

Teacher Perceptions Of The Impact Of The North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process On Teacher Effectiveness, Professional Growth, And Attitudes Toward Teaching, Kim H. Case

Education Dissertations and Projects

This study’s purpose was to examine teacher perceptions of the impact the North Carolina Teacher Evaluation Process (NCTEP) has on their professional growth, effectiveness, and attitudes toward teaching. Literature review reveals a longstanding interest in teacher evaluation for ensuring teacher quality and enhancing professional growth. Controversy exists in public and educational arenas as to how both purposes can be accomplished within a single evaluation system.

North Carolina evaluation reforms have mirrored nationwide efforts to use teacher evaluation as a tool for improving teacher effectiveness. The incorporation of value-added measures (VAMs) into teachers’ summative ratings and implementation of the North Carolina …

The Swiss German Language And Identity: Stereotyping Between The Aargau And The Zurich Dialects, Jessica Rohr Dec 2016

The Swiss German Language And Identity: Stereotyping Between The Aargau And The Zurich Dialects, Jessica Rohr

Open Access Theses

Swiss German dialects contribute to the social identity of a speaker, especially on a local level (Christen, 1995). Many dialects of Switzerland are associated with a common stereotype which relates to the identity of the speakers (Rash, 2002). This research looks at these notions and investigates concepts of identity ascription and stereotyping that arise between and from the dialects of canton Aargau and canton Zürich, in Switzerland. The generation of a definition of identity for the project, drawing off existing identity theories in sociolinguistics, and stereotyping theories, allow for an investigation of how the Aargau and Zürich dialects fit into …
