Introduction To Socio-Economics: An Ethical Foundation For Law-Related Economic Analysis, Robert Ashford

Akron Law Review

This introductory Article to the Symposium Issue on Law and Socio-Economics (1) briefly explains the origin of the term “socio-economics,” (2) recounts the history of its formal introduction into legal education in 1997, (3) sets forth its underlying principles as a specific methodological approach to law-related economic analysis, (4) describes in greater detail some of its most important features, (5) compares the socio-economic approach to the narrower, neoclassical economic approach that dominates scholarship in “law and economics,” (6) explains the special connection between socio-economic principles and the ethical responsibilities of lawyers related to competence, candor, and the lawyer’s role as …

Genderqueer: What It Means, Hailey Otis Jun 2016

Genderqueer: What It Means, Hailey Otis

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

This article explains the term genderqueer, presenting a comprehensive, unambiguous, working definition. Getting to a definition of genderqueer could be the first step toward tolerance, acceptance, and eventual appreciation of a marginalized group of people. There are three primary ways in which the word genderqueer is conceptualized. First, the term can describe a personal identity that exists outside of the gender binary. Second, it can refer to an identity that consists of a particular amalgamation of masculine and feminine traits (or even the rejection of all such traits). Third, the word can represent an identity that embraces a fluidity of …

Reconstructing Activity Patterns At Epidamnus, Albania: Impacts Of Greek And Roman Colonizations, Jennifer Wright Jun 2016

Reconstructing Activity Patterns At Epidamnus, Albania: Impacts Of Greek And Roman Colonizations, Jennifer Wright

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Colonization is often associated with exploitation of local laborers. However, the degree to which physical activity in local populations changes following colonization depends upon the policies of the colonizers, and the technologies that are locally available. This research tests the null hypothesis that levels of physical activity, as evidenced by osteoarthritis in human skeletons, remained constant at Epidamnus, Albania during Greek and Roman colonial occupation (620 BC-AD 378). To test this hypothesis, 80 skeletons from Epidamnus were examined for evidence of osteoarthritis, and scored according to international standardized protocols. Of these 80 individuals, 27 were adults that showed sufficient preservation …

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum Jun 2016

Understanding Reproductive Health Among Burmese Refugees In Greeley, Colorado: An Ethnographic Account, Alexandra Julia Krumtum

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

In the past four years, over 1,000 Burmese refugees have settled in Greeley, Colorado, but little is known about their conceptualizations of health or their experiences with local medical institutions. This paper investigates Burmese refugee women’s reproductive health beliefs and interactions with biomedical professionals. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation, I show that a lack of mutual understanding between the two groups contributes to issues in communication and difficulties in promoting medical care. Medical anthropological research shows that culture has important implications for the experience and outcome of illness, as well as for the utilization of medical services and likelihood …

Decher, C. R. Gray, J. C. Garteh, C. W. Kilpatrick, H. J. Kuhn, B. Phalan, A. Monadjem, B. Kadjo, F. Jacquet, C. Denys

Journal of Contemporary Water Research and Education

New records of the endemic semi-aquatic Nimba Otter Shrew Micropotamogale lamottei (Tenrecidae, Potamogalinae) were obtained during recent Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) in Liberia. We discuss the future of this Evolutionary Distinct and Globally Endangered (EDGE) species in the face of large-scale landscape transformations. In an attempt to assess genetic diversity and genetic differentiation of M. lamottei throughout its distributional range, we examined two mitochondrial loci (cytochrome b and 12S rRNA) from five samples of Nimba Otter Shrews at three localities in Liberia and compared the 12S sequences with a GenBank sequence from Cote d'Ivoire. While all six individuals examined had …

Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise Jun 2016

Tracing The Material: Spaces And Objects In British And Irish Modernist Novels, Mary Allison Wise

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Tracing the Material considers how James Joyce’s Ulysses, Virginia Woolf’s The Years, and Samuel Beckett’s Murphy represent material spaces and objects as a way of engaging with the fraught histories of England and Ireland. I argue that these three writers use spaces and objects to think through and critique nineteenth and early twentieth-century conflicts and transitions, particularly in the areas of empire, nationalism, gender, and family. Writing in the 1920s and 1930s, in the decline of British ascendency, the rise of the Irish Free State, and between the World Wars, these writers seek to interpret their history through …

Cuban Success Reexamined: Women’S Role Changes And Contributions To The Cuban Household, Norman Correa Jun 2016

Cuban Success Reexamined: Women’S Role Changes And Contributions To The Cuban Household, Norman Correa

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

Scholars who have written about the Cuban success story tend to tell it from a man’s perspective. By using only this voice, scholars overlook the differences between Cuban and American society for women, while neglecting the importance of gender in the transition experience. This mixed methods study examines how the role of Cuban women immigrants changed and how these changes contribute to both family and individual success. Through interviews, this project chronicles the experiences of Cuban women and their newly emerging roles. Findings indicate that when Cuban men came to the United States, they maintained the same role that they …

Isotopic Evidence For Early Trade In Animals Between Old Kingdom Egypt And Canaan, Elizabeth R. Arnold, Lindsay Babcock, Gideon Hartman, Haskel Greenfield, Itzhaq Shai, Aren Maeir

Open Access Publishing Support Funded Articles

Isotope data from a sacrificial ass and several ovicaprines (sheep/goat) from Early Bronze Age household deposits at Tell es-Safi/Gath, Israel provide direct evidence for the movement of domestic draught/draft and husbandry animals between Old Kingdom Egypt (during the time of the Pyramids) and Early Bronze Age III Canaan (ca. 2900–2500 BCE). Vacillating, bi-directional connections between Egypt and Canaan are known throughout the Early Bronze Age, but here we provide the first concrete evidence of early trade in animals from Egypt to Canaan.

Sense Of Place In Urban Transformation, Gentrification And Preventing Displacement: A Case Study Of The Marketview Heights, Aya Alfonso

Theses

This thesis is a case study of the Marketview Heights neighborhood in the city of Rochester, NY, the main target of the City’s Urban Renewal District Plan (2014). Citizens of Marketview provided input for this plan that used participatory strategies in its creation. The citizens of this neighborhood are primarily people of color who experience relatively high rates of poverty. The Marketview Heights Collective Action Project (CAP) is a community-based organization that has organized and empowered the community with initiatives and programs, like the creation of community gardens and participation in planning of policies that affect their community. CAP is …

Why The Clarification Petition Filed By The Union Of India In The Transgender Case Is Incorrect In Law And In Bad Faith On The Question Of Reservation, Surabhi Shukla

William & Mary Journal of Race, Gender, and Social Justice

In this Article, I make an argument that the state, including the Government of India, is empowered by the Constitution of India to decide which classes qualify as “backward classes” for affirmative action measures under the Constitution. The Supreme Court of India has directed the government to include the transgender population as a backward class and to extend to them affirmative action measures such as reservation in public appointments and university admissions. In response, the Union of India has filed a clarification petition stating that it is incompetent to suo motu include the transgender population as a backward class and …

Sustainability At U.S. Urban Water Utilities: A Framework To Assess Key Attributes, Matthew Paul Ries Jun 2016

Sustainability At U.S. Urban Water Utilities: A Framework To Assess Key Attributes, Matthew Paul Ries

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Urban water utilities in the United States face challenges due to a combination of external drivers. These include urbanization and population growth, which are stressing a system of aging infrastructure. Compliance with increasing regulations is also a challenge in a fiscally-constrained economic environment. A changing climate threatens infrastructure and past assumptions for water supply and quality. Urban utilities provide clean water and sanitation services to over 80% of the country’s population and its industrial centers. Therefore, the sustainability of these water utilities are crucial to the country’s and the public’s well-being.

New operating models are emerging for a “utility of …

Effects Of Multilevel Selection On The Evolution Of Homo Neandertalensis, Tracey Renee Lancaster Jun 2016

Effects Of Multilevel Selection On The Evolution Of Homo Neandertalensis, Tracey Renee Lancaster

Ursidae: The Undergraduate Research Journal at the University of Northern Colorado

In this article, a model is used based on a paper by E. O. Wilson et al. (2007) to examine how multilevel selection has affected the evolution of Neandertals. Multilevel selection theory states natural selection occurs in multiple levels of the biological hierarchy. This model has never been applied to a hominid species to date. By synthesizing this research by Wilson et al. and genetic studies by Green et al. (2010) revealing that Neandertals and humans interbred in the Middle East 80,000 years ago, it is shown that multilevel selection may have affected Neandertal evolution. Further, it is argued that …

Alcohol Discrimination And Preferences In Two Species Of Nectar-Feeding Primate, Samuel R. Gochman, Michael B. Brown, Nathaniel J. Dominy Jun 2016

Alcohol Discrimination And Preferences In Two Species Of Nectar-Feeding Primate, Samuel R. Gochman, Michael B. Brown, Nathaniel J. Dominy

Dartmouth Scholarship

Recent reports suggest that dietary ethanol, or alcohol, is a supplemental source of calories for some primates. For example, slow lorises (Nycticebus coucang) consume fermented nectars with a mean alcohol concentration of 0.6% (range: 0.0–3.8%). A similar behaviour is hypothesized for aye-ayes (Daubentonia madagascariensis) based on a single point mutation (A294V) in the gene that encodes alcohol dehydrogenase class IV (ADH4), the first enzyme to catabolize alcohol during digestion. The mutation increases catalytic efficiency 40-fold and may confer a selective advantage to aye-ayes that consume the nectar of Ravenala madagascariensis. It is uncertain, however, whether alcohol exists in this nectar …

“A Wound That Never Heals”: Health-Seeking Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Breast Cancer And Cancer In General Among Women In Nakirebe, Uganda, Ann Louise Tezak Jun 2016

“A Wound That Never Heals”: Health-Seeking Behaviors And Attitudes Towards Breast Cancer And Cancer In General Among Women In Nakirebe, Uganda, Ann Louise Tezak

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The scale and severity of cancer, specifically breast cancer, remains significantly different across the spectrum of low-income to high-income countries. This study explores women’s beliefs about breast cancer and associated prevention and health-seeking behaviors in a rural area of Uganda. Through a critical medical anthropological perspective, the study examines the social, cultural, and economic factors that shape women’s understanding of cancer, and breast cancer specifically, and that influence their use of biomedical services. Data were collected over a three-month period through 35 in-depth interviews and two focus groups with 10 women older than 18 years in the rural setting of …

Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Learning Through Practice: The Case Of Rudy, Theodore John Rupnow Jun 2016

Secondary Mathematics Teachers' Learning Through Practice: The Case Of Rudy, Theodore John Rupnow

Theses and Dissertations

In this study I investigated teachers’ learning through practice. Teachers learn in teacher preparation programs and in professional development, but the most personal learning occurs in practice. Teachers spend much of their time isolated from colleagues, participating in classroom communities instead of professional communities. If teacher educators want to understand the potential for learning in the space where teachers spend much of their time it is necessary to investigate the learning that is occurring in classroom practice. To pursue this end, I explored one secondary mathematics teacher’s learning in practice. I observed and video-recorded this teacher’s classroom practice for one …

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective, Dian Squire Jun 2016

Engaging Race And Power In Higher Education Organizations Through A Critical Race Institutional Logics Perspective, Dian Squire

Journal of Critical Scholarship on Higher Education and Student Affairs

Engaging today’s issues in higher education requires strong analytical tools that can address the complex nature of our institutional systems and their involved actors. This paper forwards a critical race institutional logics perspective (CRILP). CRILP examines both organizations as they are embedded in a neoliberal and racist society and actor identity, agency, decision-making, and their relation to power. It is important to centralize actor-level racial identity and intersecting identities as race and racism are still pervasive in today’s society. Additionally, the current state of higher education as a market-driven entity leads to thinking about the ways that neoliberalism have permeated …

The Environmental Heritage And Wellness Assessment: Applying Quantitative Techniques To Traditional Ecological Knowledge And Wellness Relationships, Kristina Baines Jun 2016

The Environmental Heritage And Wellness Assessment: Applying Quantitative Techniques To Traditional Ecological Knowledge And Wellness Relationships, Kristina Baines

Journal of Ecological Anthropology

This paper quantifies relationships between health and traditional ecological knowledge/practices in a Mopan Maya community in southern Belize, illuminating how changes in daily practices might be related to changes in wellness. Findings from statistical analyses of data related to household practices are presented. These data were collected using a Likert survey designed based on previously collected ethnographic and pile sort data related to health and heritage, and then administered to households in the community (n=64). The paper concludes that the data, while exploratory, show links between higher scores on both the health and heritage indices and warrant further engagement with …
