Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan Aug 2016

Extending Organizational Memory And Corporate Communications Research Via Autoethnography/Autobiography, Damion Waymer, Nneka Logan

The Qualitative Report

Culture, business, and communication are overlapping human phenomena. However, corporate communication methods have yet to embrace the complexity of organizational culture. Since the study of culture is anthropological in nature, we propose foregrounding autoethnography/autobiographical approaches and method to analyze corporate organizational culture. We argue that studying corporate communication, public relations, and society via the lenses of organizational culture and subsidiary organizational memory can provide unique insights into practice of corporate communication and the theorizing of organizational memory research. In this case example, we answer this question: In what ways can autobiographical/autoethnographic narratives of organizational members inform the theory, research, and …

Great Mirror Of Motherly Love: Maternal Fantasy, Mystic Mothers, And Reflected Selves In Modern And Contemporary Japanese Fiction, Jessica E. Legare Aug 2016

Great Mirror Of Motherly Love: Maternal Fantasy, Mystic Mothers, And Reflected Selves In Modern And Contemporary Japanese Fiction, Jessica E. Legare

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Fantasy and mysticism often serve as key elements in escapist literature—constructing stories that move protagonists beyond the furthest reaches of the real, the familiar and the human. Yet, the otherworldly can also bring the protagonist within reach of the familiar if we consider the representations of mothering in the following Japanese narratives: Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s “Longing for Mother” (1919), Izumi Kyōka’s “The Holy Man of Mount Kōya” (1900), Takahashi Takako’s “Doll Love” (1976), and Ono Masatsugu’s “Prayers from Nine Years Ago” (2014). Through their depictions based on supernatural and spiritual tropes, mystical-mother figures become metaphorical mirrors meant to reflect the protagonists’ …

Farming Through The Auca Runa: Agricultural Strategies And Terraces During The Late Intermediate Period, Altiplano, Peru, Brieanna Sylvia Langlie Aug 2016

Farming Through The Auca Runa: Agricultural Strategies And Terraces During The Late Intermediate Period, Altiplano, Peru, Brieanna Sylvia Langlie

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines agricultural strategies farmers employed to cope with the consequences of war and drought in the southern Peruvian Andes during the Late Intermediate Period (A.D. 1100-1450) using paleoethnobotanical data from the fortified hilltop site Ayawiri and findings from excavations of a terrace complex flanking the site. During the Late Intermediate Period, lifeways dissolved into a period of endemic warfare after the collapse of Tiwanaku. At the same time a well-documented, century-long drought surely threatened food security. Interested in how farmers responded to this political and climatic disjuncture, I analyzed 108 flotation samples collected from the residential area of …

“I’M Trying To Do The Right Thing”: Competing Responsibilities Among Teen Parents In The Context Of Neoliberalism, Jennifer Kimberly Heipp Aug 2016

“I’M Trying To Do The Right Thing”: Competing Responsibilities Among Teen Parents In The Context Of Neoliberalism, Jennifer Kimberly Heipp

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Over 14 months of participant observation at teen mom serving organizations, I examined competing and complimentary ideas between the teen moms and the staff of the organizations about what it means to be "responsible." Within neoliberalism, being a "responsible" person is seen as both an ideal and an obligation, and scholars have elaborated how within neoliberal regimes, processes of "responsibilization" occur. In this dissertation, I advance the notion of "competing responsibilities," in that both the programs and my teen mom informants believe it is important to be a responsible person but they differ on the key question of to whom …

Lactating In St. Louis: Attachments, Technologies, And Disparities, Sarah Sobonya Aug 2016

Lactating In St. Louis: Attachments, Technologies, And Disparities, Sarah Sobonya

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation uses the concept of attachments to explicate women’s breastfeeding practices and beliefs in the racially and economically segregated St. Louis, Missouri region. My analysis examines the interplay among attachments at three levels: women’s intrapersonal attachments to specific concepts of self; their attachments to the values and priorities of social groups; and attachments they form in response to larger structural and ideological forces in society. I argue that racial and socioeconomic disparities are manifested through breastfeeding praxis, so that breastfeeding serves as a lens through which these oppressions and disparities can be more fully viewed. To illuminate this, I …

Cultivating Knowledge: The Production And Adaptation Of Knowledge On Organic And Gm Cotton Farms In Telangana, India, Andrew Flachs Aug 2016

Cultivating Knowledge: The Production And Adaptation Of Knowledge On Organic And Gm Cotton Farms In Telangana, India, Andrew Flachs

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the ways in which genetically modified (GM) cotton seeds, rice seeds, and organic cotton seeds in Telangana, India set farmers on diverging economic, environmental, and social trajectories. GM cotton, a cash crop sold under hundreds of different brand names by private corporations, leads farmers to rapidly change to new seeds and copy their neighbors’ choices as they chase high yields that counter their high investments in an input-intensive agriculture. Rice, a subsistence and market crop distributed largely by public breeders, allows farmers to change their seeds more slowly as they carefully evaluate durability and taste alongside overall …

Surviving Collapse: Collective Memory And Political Reorganization At Actuncan, Belize, David Williams Mixter Aug 2016

Surviving Collapse: Collective Memory And Political Reorganization At Actuncan, Belize, David Williams Mixter

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation focuses on a study of political reorganization at the ancient Maya site of Actuncan, Belize following the 9th century collapse of Classic Maya society. During the Terminal Classic period (A.D. 780–1000), Maya divine kingship was gradually abandoned, leading to increased warfare, regional food scarcity, and mass migration. In contrast to broader trends, the residents of Actuncan did not leave. In this dissertation, I draw on the theoretical frameworks of resilience theory and collective memory to explain why Actuncan was not abandoned and how the local community reorganized its political and ritual institutions after the failure of divine kingship. …

The Non-Masticatory Use Of The Anterior Teeth Among Late Pleistocene Humans, John Charles Willman Aug 2016

The Non-Masticatory Use Of The Anterior Teeth Among Late Pleistocene Humans, John Charles Willman

Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations

Characteristic patterns of dental wear form through the use of the dentition for non-masticatory manipulative behaviors. The use of “teeth-as-tools” or the dentition as a “third hand” for manipulative behaviors emphasizes the importance of the human dentition in our otherwise extrasomatic tool-kit. The extreme pattern of anterior dental wear found in many Neandertals, together with their large anterior teeth, has led researchers to suggest that the unique craniofacial morphology of Neandertals is the result of functional adaptation to the habitual use of the dentition for manipulative tasks. However, decades of research investigating the adaptive significance and biomechanical properties of Neandertal …

The Extent Of Indigenous-Norse Contact And Trade Prior To Columbus, Donald E. Warden Aug 2016

The Extent Of Indigenous-Norse Contact And Trade Prior To Columbus, Donald E. Warden

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Norse exploration during the medieval period was widespread and diverse in location. Of the many places visited by the Norse, North America has continued to be surrounded by mystery. The full extent of Norse exploration in North America is a growing field and the extent of their contact and trade with Indigenous Americans is becoming increasingly known. A thorough compilation of the evidence allows for significant, new conclusions to be made about Norse presence in the Americas.

Science map is a useful tool to understand the structure of a discipline, research networks and collaborations. Wildlife forensics is an emerging field of Forensic Sciences, where science is applied to legal cases involving wildlife. This study is aimed at creating science maps of Wildlife Forensics, both at global level and regional (i.e. India) level using PubMed database. A total of 303 records pertaining to global and 29 records pertaining to India published between 2001 and 2015 are obtained from the PubMed. These bibliometric data are analysed and maps are constructed using MS-Excel spreadsheets, VOSviewer and Pajek software. The …

Drivers Of Sustainable Agriculture In A Southern State, Casey William Odom Aug 2016

Drivers Of Sustainable Agriculture In A Southern State, Casey William Odom

Theses and Dissertations

This Master’s Thesis establishes what motivates a group of Mississippi farmers to participate in sustainable agriculture instead of industrial agriculture. A database of sustainable farmers was constructed in collaboration with the Gaining Ground Sustainability Institute of Mississippi. This research project used social network analysis with 28 farmers and participant observation and semi-structured interviewing with a purposively selected sample of 14 farmers. This project also explores the sustainable agricultural practices of participants. A map of the social network of sustainable agriculturalists in Mississippi is presented and shows that some farmers are well connected, some moderately connected, and others are isolated. As …

Cultural Ambassadors: American Academics In The Soviet Union, 1958-1991, Kayla Brooke Hester Aug 2016

Cultural Ambassadors: American Academics In The Soviet Union, 1958-1991, Kayla Brooke Hester

Theses and Dissertations

In response to the emerging Cold War conflict, American policymakers adopted cultural diplomacy as a permanent component of US foreign policy for the first time. In an attempt to win the hearts and minds of the worlds’ people, American leaders utilized international cultural outreach, through methods such as exchanges of students, teachers, and scientists, traveling exhibitions, radio and television broadcasts, publications, and tourism, among others. In recent decades, many historians have begun to explore the significance of these efforts. However, none of these works have examined the experience of those individuals who actually participated in the exchanges. This work begins …

The Reconstruction And Analysis Of Oral Microbiome Composition Using Dental Calculus From The Mississippi State Asylum (1855-1935), Jackson, Ms, Jonathan Robert Belanich Aug 2016

The Reconstruction And Analysis Of Oral Microbiome Composition Using Dental Calculus From The Mississippi State Asylum (1855-1935), Jackson, Ms, Jonathan Robert Belanich

Theses and Dissertations

The human oral microbiome is the total amount of microbial biodiversity present in the oral cavity and, given its relevance to human health and disease, has recently become a foci for study. By analyzing dental calculus, and sequencing the bacterial DNA, it is possible to reconstruct and examine the oral microbiomes of past individuals. In this study, dental calculus was sampled from (N=4) skeletons recovered from the cemetery of the mid 19th- 20th, century Mississippi State Asylum in Jackson, MS. Bacterial DNA isolation and shotgun sequencing were successful, with 16S analyses yielding an average of 96 identified species. All samples …

The Syrian Puzzle: The Syrian Conflict: Explaining Main Causes Of The Conflict, Mustafa Sen Aug 2016

The Syrian Puzzle: The Syrian Conflict: Explaining Main Causes Of The Conflict, Mustafa Sen

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, I examine how sectarian and ethnic fragmentations along with the economic disparity have different deteriorating effects on the stability of the bloody conflict in Syria, and how these effects make it difficult for society to build a consensus that would end the conflict. Politicized Ethnic fragmentation and mobilized sectarianism fueled opposition that destabilized Syria; the government’s violent repression of opposition groups exacerbated the conflict that led to virtual civil war; the armed conflict precipitated a crisis of confidence that spawned mass migration; the economic disparity in the country caused more divided society, and it made society vulnerable …

Isotopic Study Of Diet During The Bronze And Early Iron Ages At Mitrou And Tragana Agia Triada, Greece, Stephanie Fuehr Aug 2016

Isotopic Study Of Diet During The Bronze And Early Iron Ages At Mitrou And Tragana Agia Triada, Greece, Stephanie Fuehr

Theses and Dissertations

The stable isotopes carbon and nitrogen from 18 skeletal and 51 dental samples from various burial contexts at the Bronze and Iron Age sites of Mitrou and Tragana Agia Triada are examined to understand diet in prehistoric central Greece. The samples are compared by cultural period, site, and burial type in order to determine if diet was affected by changes in society or by social status as determined by burial form. In addition, isotopic data from across Greece is compared to understand diet from the Neolithic to Iron Age and in different regions of the country. The results of the …

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell Aug 2016

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality estimates based on archaeological shellfish remains have been an important component of settlement pattern reconstruction. Investigations of this nature allow researchers to place prehistoric people on the landscape at points in space at different times of the year. Many of the previous seasonality studies, however, have focused on marine species from coastal sites, with little attention given to freshwater locales, especially ones in the Mississippi Delta. To address that disparity, this study examines freshwater mussel “season of capture” via analysis of stable oxygen isotope ratios in specimens recovered from two Late Woodland sites located along the Yazoo River, Mississippi. …

Testing For A Functional Relationship Between Shell Rings And Flood-Prone Environments In The Yazoo Basin Of The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Tiffany Renee Raymond Aug 2016

Testing For A Functional Relationship Between Shell Rings And Flood-Prone Environments In The Yazoo Basin Of The Lower Mississippi Alluvial Valley, Tiffany Renee Raymond

Theses and Dissertations

The form and function of freshwater mussel shell rings in the Yazoo Basin was examined in this thesis. General and controlled surface collections, excavations, a seriation, and documentary research on flooding in the Yazoo Basin were completed. Four sites were investigated, including 22YZ513 (Rugby Farm), 22YZ605 (Light Capp), 22QU562 (Devil’s Race Track), and 22QU569 (Drew Smith), in an attempt to address whether shell rings were a functional byproduct of flood-prone environments. Results indicated that the two Quitman County sites were not shell rings, even though they appeared as such from aerial photographs, and that they represent a different ceramic cultural …

Investigating Late Woodland-Period Aquatic Catchments Through Freshwater Mussel Assemblage Composition, Sarah K. Gilleland Aug 2016

Investigating Late Woodland-Period Aquatic Catchments Through Freshwater Mussel Assemblage Composition, Sarah K. Gilleland

Theses and Dissertations

During the Late Woodland Period in the American Southeast, the amount of space that any individual group could exploit began to shrink, due to the presence of other groups on the landscape. Resource expansion occurred to augment food supplies, resulting in increased exploitation of mussel beds. Because mussels can be extremely sensitive to the characteristics of the waterways they live in, the specific habitat requirements of these animals can be used to reconstruct the environments they were recovered from. In this thesis I use freshwater mussel assemblages to reconstruct hypothetical aquatic catchments and map them onto modern rivers in the …
