Should Children Work? Dilemmas Of Children’S Educational Rights In The Global South, Conrad John Masabo
Should Children Work? Dilemmas Of Children’S Educational Rights In The Global South, Conrad John Masabo
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
The realisation of Children’s Rights and the right to education, in particular, have for quite long left the children of the Global South at a crossroads. The ideal of a childhood free from work has in itself become a barrier to access this social good. As such, due to their country’s minimal or non-existent educational funding and family abject poverty, some children in the Global South have realised that adopting a pragmatic strategy of combining school and work is the only feasible solution. This study, therefore, examines the interface between children’s work and schooling in the Global South.

Ancient Dna Investigation Of A Medieval German Cemetery Confirms Long-Term Stability Of Ccr5-∆32 Allele Frequencies In Central Europe, Abigail Bouwman, Natallia Shved, Gulfirde Akgul, Frank Ruhli, Christina Warinner
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
The CCR5-∆32 mutation present in European populations is among the most prominently debated cases of recent positive selection in humans. This allele, a 32-bp deletion (∆32) that renders the T-cell CCR5 receptor non-functional, has important epidemiological and public health significance, as homozygous carriers are resistant to several HIV strains. However, although the function of this allele in preventing HIV infection is now well described, its human evolutionary origin is poorly understood. Initial attempts to determine the emergence of the CCR5-∆32 allele pointed to selection during the 14th century Black Death pandemic; however, subsequent analyses …

Navigating Musical Identities, Knowledge Production And "Authenticity" In The Diaspora, Anita Fábos
Navigating Musical Identities, Knowledge Production And "Authenticity" In The Diaspora, Anita Fábos
Faculty Works
In this chapter, through dialogue between co-authors Alsarah and Anita Fabos, we attempt to capture and explore the musical and personal identity of singer/songwriter/bandleader Alsarah—at a particular point in time. The partial transcript and analysis presented here demonstrates the opportunities but also real dilemmas inherent in navigating identity and producing knowledge as a person from, but not in, or in some ways, of Sudan.
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
The Problem Of Obviousness, Benjamin Goldberg
Sophia and Philosophia
1. The Problem of Obviousness
There’s no such thing as obviousness.
This isn’t, of course, itself obvious; nor is it clear why it should be a problem. So let me start elsewhere, with the anti-vaccine movement. A friend of mine laid out the ‘obvious’ position: there are facts and rationality on one side, unenlightened ignorance and bigotry on the other. Scientists versus fools, and the fools don’t even know what game is being played.

Legal Anarchism: Does Existence Need To Be Regulated By The State, Sirus Kashefi
Legal Anarchism: Does Existence Need To Be Regulated By The State, Sirus Kashefi
PhD Dissertations
This thesis asks does existence need to be regulated by the State? The answer relies on legal anarchism, an interdisciplinary, particularly criminal law and philosophy, and unconventional research project based on multiple methodologies with a specific language. It critically analyzes and consequently rejects State law because of its unjustified and unnecessary nature founded on unlimited violence and white-collar crime (Chapters 1-4), on the one hand, and suggests some alternatives to the Governmental legal system founded on agreement and peace (Chapter 5), on the other hand. It furthermore takes into account the elements of time and space, which means the ecological, …

Ties That Bind: Marital Networks And Politics In Punjab, Pakistan, Stephen Lyon, Muhammad Aurang Zeb Mughal
Ties That Bind: Marital Networks And Politics In Punjab, Pakistan, Stephen Lyon, Muhammad Aurang Zeb Mughal
Faculty & Staff Publications
Pakistani politics are characterised by strong corporate social links through kinship and caste that impose reciprocal obligations and rights. Marital maps enable allow for accurate prediction of allegiances and decision making and contribute to a transparent assessment of political processes in the country. While much of the focus on reciprocal relations has understandably been on descent relations (dynasties), the complex network of marital alliances that cut across lineage and sectarian divides helps explain notable levels of stability despite the fragility of the state and other public institutions. Using the example of one of the most successful political dynasties in post …

Decolonising Sex: Fifty Shades Of Rape, Roseline K. Njogu
Decolonising Sex: Fifty Shades Of Rape, Roseline K. Njogu
Southern African Journal of Policy and Development
This article explores how ideas of patriarchy have shaped the nature and effect of rape law. It argues that rape law reinforces patriarchy, and because of the inherent inconsistencies between the male roles of aggressor and protector, it has remained ineffective. Taking Kenya as its springboard, it analyses how ideas of sexual relations within and outside marriage are transplanted through colonialism; and how they morph and merge with analogous indigenous conceptions to entrench and formalise the continued subjugation of the female body. It explores the unintended consequences of the internationalisation of English Monogamy; and rape law reform and its continuity/discontinuity …

Architecture Of Diversity: Using The Lens And Language Of Space To Examine Racialized Experiences Of Students Of Color On College Campuses, Michelle Samura
Education Faculty Books and Book Chapters
"[A]n examination of racial diversity in higher education requires serious consideration of space... [A] spatial perspective offers a lens for locating and examining processes of racialization. And a spatial approach also provides a language participants and researchers can use to talk about the discreet ways race still operates in everyday interactions, including subtle forms of racism that are overlooked or ignored because race is often understood by students to matter less today. Essentially, a spatial approach sheds light on race relations and racial structures in tangible campus environments."

Forested settings present challenges for understanding the full extent of past human landscape modifications. Field-based archaeological reconnaissance in forests is low-efficiency and most remote sensing techniques are of limited utility, and together, this means many past sites and features in forests are unknown. Archaeologists have increasingly used light detection and ranging (lidar), a remote sensing tool that uses pulses of light to measure reflecting surfaces at high spatial resolution, to address these limitations. Archaeology studies using lidar have made significant progress identifying permanent structures built by large-scale complex agriculturalist societies. Largely unaccounted for, however, are numerous small and more practical …
