The Politics Of Town Hall Meetings: Analyzing Constituent Relations-In-Interaction, Robert J. Green
The Politics Of Town Hall Meetings: Analyzing Constituent Relations-In-Interaction, Robert J. Green
Open Access Dissertations
The politics of town meetings proposes that town hall meetings are institutions of representative democracy that present an opportunity for constituents to hold their elected representatives accountable in a public setting. Constituent relations-in-interaction glosses a complex set of interactional practices and procedures through which ensembles of participants bring town hall meetings, as structures of social interaction, into being. This study uses conversation analysis, the study of talk-in-interaction, to show that the politics of town hall meetings orients to three types of accountability: Interactional accountability, political accountability, and public accountability. The articulation of these accountability types provides a sense of overall-structural …
Biochemical Changes In Animal Models Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Christine E. M. Keller
Biochemical Changes In Animal Models Of Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, Christine E. M. Keller
Open Access Dissertations
Fetal alcohol spectrum disorder (FASD) is a completely preventable disease, that has profound effects on life-long health and function of the affected individual. Prevalence estimates of FASD in the United States indicate 33.5 per 1,000 live births are affected with this disorder (Roozen, 2016). FASD is caused by maternal ethanol intake during pregnancy. However, recommendations of the amounts of alcohol safe to drink during pregnancy are not established. Further, we lack a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical pathways modified in prenatal ethanol exposure. Biomarkers are also lacking. Our results demonstrate the vast array of biochemical pathways modified in the chronic …
The Power Of The Medieval Solomon-Magus And Solomon-Auctor Revealed Through The "Canterbury Tales", "Sir Gawain And The Green Knight", And The "Tale Of The Sankgreal", Karen R. Knudson
Open Access Dissertations
The Solomon-auctor and Solomon- magus traditions begin in the biblical record, and attribute authority to Solomon not only through his ever-familiar wisdom but also his authorship of Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and Song of Songs; his administration and craftsmanship in the building of the Temple; his peaceableness as king; his understanding of the natural world; and his weakness for women. The context for these traditions in the Middle Ages illuminates, in particular, the work of Solomon- auctor and Solomon-magus in the Canterbury Tales, Sir Gawain and the Green Knight, and Malory’s Tale of the Sankgreal, which is …
Synthetic Studies Of Heparan Derivatives: Glycosyl Couplings And Post-Glycosylative Modifications, Hari Raj Khatri
Synthetic Studies Of Heparan Derivatives: Glycosyl Couplings And Post-Glycosylative Modifications, Hari Raj Khatri
Open Access Dissertations
Heparan sulfate (HS) and closely related heparin are comprised of alternating units of D-glucosamine and either D-glucuronic acid (D-GluA) or L-iduronic acid (L-IdoA), and support variable degrees of sulfation which can interact with a large number of proteins with diverse biological functions. HS oligosaccharides can be constructed from readily accessible D-GlcN and D-GlcA derivatives, but the inclusion of L-IdoA is less straightforward. To address this, our laboratory has developed alternative synthetic strategies for HS-like oligosaccharides to incorporate either D-GlcA or L-IdoA in a synthetically efficient manner by nucleophilic ring opening of 4-epoxypyranosides, which can be made from readily available D-hexoses …
Listening To Our Stories In Dusty Boxes: Indigenous Storytelling Methodology, Archival Practice, And The Cherokee Female Seminary, Emily M. Legg
Listening To Our Stories In Dusty Boxes: Indigenous Storytelling Methodology, Archival Practice, And The Cherokee Female Seminary, Emily M. Legg
Open Access Dissertations
Influenced by a drive to seek out interdisciplinary connections within Rhetoric and Composition and to put these intersections into practice, this dissertation seeks out the ways indigenous ways of knowing, such as storytelling, can provide a heuristic to understand the ways our dappled discipline works to create community-based knowledges, and how these knowledges sustained through storytelling can recover the histories in our discipline by opening up our boundaries framed by dominant origin stories. Building on the work of decolonial and indigenous scholars, this dissertation asserts that indigenous storytelling encourages researchers to re-tool dominant methods in existing colonial structures in order …
Investigation Of Cellular Microenvironments And Heterogeneity With Biodynamic Imaging, Daniel Alexander Merrill
Investigation Of Cellular Microenvironments And Heterogeneity With Biodynamic Imaging, Daniel Alexander Merrill
Open Access Dissertations
Imaging of biological tissue in a relevant environment is critical to accurately assessing the effectiveness of chemotherapeutic agents in combatting cancer. Though many three-dimensional (3D) culture models exist, conventional in vitro assays continue to use two-dimensional (2D) cultures because of the difficulty in imaging through deep tissue. 3D tomographic imaging techniques exist and are being used in the development of 3D efficacy assays. However, most of these assays look at therapy endpoint (dead or living cancer cell count) and do not capture the dynamics of tissue response.
Biodynamic imaging (BDI) is a 3D tomographic imaging and assay technique that uses …
Influence Of Dietary Polyphenols On Carbohydrate Intestinal Digestion And Absorption, Sydney E. Moser
Influence Of Dietary Polyphenols On Carbohydrate Intestinal Digestion And Absorption, Sydney E. Moser
Open Access Dissertations
Both epidemiological and clinical evidence support the notion that polyphenol rich foods and beverages may modify glycemic response, glucose homeostasis and subsequent risk of Type-2 diabetes. In vitro evidence typically derived from experiments with pure phenolics and phenolic rich extracts have pointed to this benefit being associated with two potential mechanisms: (1) the ability of specific polyphenolics to inhibit carbohydrate digestion (amylase and glucosidase) and (2) polyphenolic inhibition of intestinal glucose transport. While the high potential of these activities is evident, little is actually known regarding the extent to which these benefits are extendable to the actual food matrix these …
Understanding Plant Response To Stress Using Gene Model Quality Evaluation And Transcriptome Analysis, Karthik Ramaswamy Padmanabhan
Understanding Plant Response To Stress Using Gene Model Quality Evaluation And Transcriptome Analysis, Karthik Ramaswamy Padmanabhan
Open Access Dissertations
The overall aim of the project was to understand how plants reacted to environmental stress and evolved to overcome it. The land plants that we see today evolved from a green algal ancestor around 510 million years ago. Plants had to make significant changes to their cellular, morphological, regulatory and physiological processes during their adaptation to the terrestrial environment from an aquatic environment. The first part of the project was to find out how these changes were reflected on the protein makeup of the early land plants. The gene model sequence data of two early land plants, Physcomitrella patens (moss) …
L2 Effect On Bilingual Spanish/English Encoding Of Motion Events: Does Manner Salience Transfer?, Heidi E. Parker
L2 Effect On Bilingual Spanish/English Encoding Of Motion Events: Does Manner Salience Transfer?, Heidi E. Parker
Open Access Dissertations
This study explores the potential effect of a second language (L2) on first language (L1) encoding of motion events. The domain of interest is MANNER and the goal is to investigate if the degree of manner salience can be restructured under the effect of a L2. Slobin (2004, 2006) proposes an expansion of Talmy’s (1985, 1991, 2000) binary typology and observes that the degree of manner saliencevaries cross-linguistically. The two languages investigated in this study, Spanish and English, are at divergent points along the cline of manner salience. In addition, Slobin (1996b) suggests dividing MANNER into tier one (T1) …
Development Of First-Year Engineering Teams' Mathematical Models Through Linked Modeling And Simulation Projects, Kelsey Joy Rodgers
Development Of First-Year Engineering Teams' Mathematical Models Through Linked Modeling And Simulation Projects, Kelsey Joy Rodgers
Open Access Dissertations
The development and use of mathematical models and simulations underlies much of the work of engineers. Mathematical models describe a situation or system through mathematics, quantification, and pattern identification. Simulations enable users to interact with models through manipulation of input variables and visualization of model outputs. Although modeling skills are fundamental, they are rarely explicitly taught in engineering. Model-eliciting activities (MEAs) represent a pedagogical approach used in engineering to teach students mathematical modeling skills through the development of a model to solve an authentic problem.
This study is an investigation into the impact of linking a MEA and a simulation-building …
Facial Processing And Social Motivation In Psychopathy: An Event-Related Potential Study, Emily Dubose Sherman
Facial Processing And Social Motivation In Psychopathy: An Event-Related Potential Study, Emily Dubose Sherman
Open Access Dissertations
Recent work has urged a shift in the perspective of psychopathy to focus on the interpersonal aspects of the disorder that are often overlooked in the broader literature. Conceptual and empirical overlap with an exemplar interpersonal disorder- autism spectrum disorder- lends support to viewing psychopathy as an interpersonal disorder; however, there are interpersonal dysfunctions associated with psychopathy that cannot be attributed wholly to overlap with autistic traits. The current study examined self-report measures, a lab task, and event-related potentials (ERPs) that are related to social, interpersonal functioning and motivation to help elucidate what aspects of psychopathy and ASD are overlapping …
The Graphic Side Of Fear: The Effects Of Anti-Tobacco Graphic Threat Appeals, Latasha R. Swanson
The Graphic Side Of Fear: The Effects Of Anti-Tobacco Graphic Threat Appeals, Latasha R. Swanson

Many public health organizations have proposed and implemented campaigns and policies involving graphic ads or warnings to deter individuals from smoking. The current study evaluated how high-cigarette dependent smokers evaluate these messages compared to low-cigarette dependent smokers using a mixed, 3 x 2 factorial design. A pilot study involving focus groups, interviews, and evaluation questionnaires (N=10) was conducted to classify graphic threat appeals and develop stimulus materials for the primary study. For the primary study, three graphic threat appeal conditions were evaluated by Amazon Mechanical Turk (MTurk) users (N=200). Findings suggested that the graphicness of the …

(MATERIAL and METHODS) First, we define the physical principals and optimal protocols that provide contrast when imaging with US and the transducer properties contributing to resolution limits. The US field of view (FOV) was characterized to determine the optimal settings with regard to imaging depth, focal region, with and without harmonic imaging, and artifact identification. This will allow us to determine the minimum errors expected when registering multimodal volumes (CT, US, CBCT).
Next, we designed an in-house integrated US manipulator and platform to relate CT, 3D-US and linear accelerator coordinate systems. To validate our platform, an agar-based phantom with measured …
Reflexivity: A First Demonstration, Melissa Jane Swisher
Reflexivity: A First Demonstration, Melissa Jane Swisher
Open Access Dissertations
Currently, the emergent relation of reflexivity after training a set of baseline relations has not been demonstrated with any animal—human or nonhuman. True reflexivity can only be demonstrated if no identity (i.e., physically matching stimulus) relations are trained. In six experiments, the emergence of reflexivity and its opposite, anti-reflexivity, were explored. Pigeons received concurrent successive matching training on two or three arbitrary tasks: AB hue-form and BC form-hue (and AC hue-hue) matching. Once they had acquired these tasks, they were tested for BB (form-form) reflexivity or BB’ (form-form) anti-reflexivity matching. Most (10 of 13) pigeons that received three arbitrary tasks …
Evaluating The Prevalence And Effectiveness Of Breed-Specific Legislation, Felicia E. Trembath
Evaluating The Prevalence And Effectiveness Of Breed-Specific Legislation, Felicia E. Trembath
Open Access Dissertations
Dog bites pose a persistent public health problem, which some jurisdictions pass breed-specific legislation (BSL) to address. However, very little non-anecdotal evidence regarding the efficacy of BSL has been presented. Currently, BSL research is hampered by the absence of standard terminology, an established prevalence, or a scientific consensus on its effectiveness. The purpose of this study is to propose standardized terminology for BSL, establish the prevalence of each type of BSL in the USA, and conduct a systematic review of the effectiveness of BSL.
After review of terminology currently in use, as well as review of the regulatory actions of …
Exploring Animacy As A Mnemonic Dimension, Joshua Edward Vanarsdall
Exploring Animacy As A Mnemonic Dimension, Joshua Edward Vanarsdall
Open Access Dissertations
There is a great deal of evidence across cognitive science that animacy, or more generally, the features that make up what it means to be a living thing, is a foundational dimension of human cognition. In perception, animates both capture attention (Pratt, Radulescu, Guo, & Abrams, 2010) and are relatively immune to change blindness (New, Cosmides, & Tooby, 2007). Developmental work places the animate-inanimate distinction as one of the first categories children learn (Opfer & Gelman, 2011). Work in neuroscience points toward a fundamental role for animacy in semantic memory (Caramazza & Mahon, 2003), and linguists have identified animacy as …
Quantum Coherence And Entanglement In Open Quantum Systems, Yiteng Zhang
Quantum Coherence And Entanglement In Open Quantum Systems, Yiteng Zhang
Open Access Dissertations
We humans always want to believe that we can overpower nature. However, the reality is that nature outperforms humans in many aspects. Animals' abilities to navigate/orient and photosynthesis are two excellent examples in these aspects. However, the mechanisms underlying them are still unknown. For decades, scientists and researchers have made a lot of efforts to reveal these mysteries in nature.
Recently, quantum coherence and entanglement are believed to play a crucial role in such biological systems–avian compass and photosynthesis. Thus, nature might know more tricks to utilize quantum mechanics than humans. Studies on the mechanisms underlying avian compass and photosynthesis …
Mathematical Models Of Ebola Virus Disease And Vaccine Preventable Diseases, Yinqiang Zheng
Mathematical Models Of Ebola Virus Disease And Vaccine Preventable Diseases, Yinqiang Zheng
Open Access Dissertations
This thesis focuses on applying mathematical models to studies on the transmission dynamics and control interventions of infectious diseases such as Ebola virus disease and vaccine preventable diseases.
Many models in studies of Ebola transmission are based on the model by Legrand et al. (2007). However, there are potential issues with the Legrand model. First, the model was originally formulated in a complex form, leading to confusion and hindering its uses in practice. To overcome the difficulty, the Legrand model is reformulated in a much simpler but equivalent form in this thesis. The reformulated model also provides an intuitive understanding …

Due to unique physical and chemical properties, carbon-based nanomaterials, including C60 and graphene oxide, now being used in an increasing number of applications. Considering their widespread use, nanoparticles will inevitably find their way to the natural environment. However, their environmental fate and transport have not been intensively explored, resulting in a general lack of knowledge regarding their risk assessment and life cycle exposure concentrations. To this end, this study has investigated: (i) the photo mineralization of aqu/nC60 clusters under photo irradiation, and (ii) environmental transformation of graphene oxide in the aquatic environment. This study shows that CO2 was produced from …

Love That Dirty Water : A Preliminary Investigation Of Microbial Diversity In On-Street Hot Dog Water, Nelson S. Casanova
Love That Dirty Water : A Preliminary Investigation Of Microbial Diversity In On-Street Hot Dog Water, Nelson S. Casanova
Theses, Dissertations and Culminating Projects
Standard microbiological methods were utilized to assess the microbial diversity and abundance in the hot dog water found in mobile food carts. Since we could not directly assay the water, we devised a method of washing hot dogs with sterile water to indirectly assess the presence of microorganisms both growing in the water and on the hot dogs. Plating on LB-agar and LB-agar supplemented with antibiotics was used to isolate microbes from hot dog water from randomly selected vendors in twenty-six Manhattan neighborhoods and the Bronx. In addition, five major hot dog brands were similarly tested as store-bought controls. As …

Corporate Social Responsibility: Sexual Exploitation Of Children In The Costa Rican Hotel Tourist Industry, Michelle Flynn Osborne
Doctor of Business Administration (DBA)
According to the 2016 International Labour Organization (ILO), more than 168 million children are forced to labor worldwide, and more than half of these children work in some of the worst forms. Sexual exploitation and human trafficking are classified by the ILO as being some of the worst forms of child labor existing in the twenty-first century. Child labor in the worst forms are more prevalent in developing countries due to poverty and lack of education. The United States Department of State monitors human trafficking and child sexual exploitation through an annual Trafficking in Persons Report (TIP). The 2015 TIP …

This paper analyzes 12,596 wagering decisions of 6,064 contestants in the US game show Jeopardy!, focusing on the anchoring phenomenon in financial decision-making. We find that contestants anchor heavily on the initial dollar value of a clue in their wagering decision, even though there exists no rational reason to do so. More than half of all wagers occur within $500 of the initial dollar value, although the maximum possible wagering value averages $5,914. This anchoring phenomenon remains statistically significant on the one percent level, even after controlling for scores, clue category, time trends, and player-fixed effects. When exploiting within-player variation …

Trophoblast cells from bovine somatic cell nuclear transfer (SCNT) conceptuses express major histocompatibility complex class I (MHC-I) proteins early in gestation, and this may be one cause of the significant first-trimester embryonic mortality observed in these pregnancies. MHC-I homozygous-compatible (n = 9), homozygous-incompatible (n = 8), and heterozygous-incompatible (n = 5) SCNT pregnancies were established. The control group consisted of eight pregnancies produced by artificial insemination. Uterine and placental samples were collected on Day 35 ± 1 of pregnancy, and expression of MHC-I, leukocyte markers, and cytokines were examined by immunohistochemistry. Trophoblast cells from all SCNT pregnancies expressed MHC-I, while …
Editing Embryos: Considering Restrictions On Genetically Engineering Humans, Anna Zaret
Editing Embryos: Considering Restrictions On Genetically Engineering Humans, Anna Zaret
UC Law Journal
In April 2015, scientists used a new genetic engineering tool known as CRISPR to edit the genes of a human embryo for the first time. CRISPR has made gene editing cheaper, more efficient, and more accurate than ever before. These advances in technology indicate that in the near future, technology will enable the genes of embryos to be edited, leading to the birth of the first “genetically modified human.” This Note explores the potential benefits and risks of editing embryos for reproductive purposes, and problematizes the lack of meaningful public regulation or deliberation in the United States on editing embryos. …

Caribou is one food source that the people in Anaktuvuk Pass, Alaska rely on as a dependable and traditional source of food. United Caribou Association of the Nunamiut (UCAN) hopes to emulate the Alaska Eskimo Whaling Commission in a way that secures a first right of refusal over sport hunters and others. What UCAN proposes by its presence are negotiated restrictions to ensure subsistence taking of caribou by residents of Anaktuvuk Pass. Because the caribou of three Arctic herds are unrestrained and transient, and a shared resource of the State of Alaska, the State Board of Game views the caribou …
The Communication Of Design To Non-Experts: An Investigation Into Effective Methods Of Communicating Design Through Drawing Styles, Jerry M. Hiler
The Communication Of Design To Non-Experts: An Investigation Into Effective Methods Of Communicating Design Through Drawing Styles, Jerry M. Hiler
Architecture Masters of Science Program: Theses
Communication between designers and their client has always been an essential element in the design of buildings and interior spaces. This communication occurs in various different ways, but the key method of a designer communicating their space is through their drawings. Clients come from many different backgrounds and many may not have the training or experience that allows them to fully understand what they are seeing in the drawings being presented and as such can be considered non-experts. A majority of drawings are typically presented and developed in two-dimensions which can be confusing for non-experts to understand since they rarely …
