Breeding Season Avian Community Composition And Prey Availability In Eucalyptus And Slash Pine Plantations Of Southwestern Louisiana, Elizabeth J. Messick

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The increased demand for wood products related to industries such as bioenergy and paper has resulted in a need for a consistent supply of raw materials. Eucalyptus (Eucalyptus spp.) plantations have the potential to boost wood production for pulpwood and biomass feedstocks. Species characteristics such as rapid, indeterminate growth, coppice regrowth, resistance to disease and insects, and tolerance of a range of environmental conditions make these species successful short-rotation woody crops (SRWCs). Camden white gum (Eucalyptus benthamii), a more cold tolerant species, has made management of eucalyptus plantations viable in southern portions of the United States such …

All Pbl Starts Here: The Problem, Woei Hung Aug 2016

All Pbl Starts Here: The Problem, Woei Hung

Interdisciplinary Journal of Problem-Based Learning

One essential piece of implementing of PBL is the problem. There have been calls from practitioners in the PBL field for a systematic process for designing effective PBL problems. Yet, the research efforts to explore, develop, and test PBL problem design methods or processes are still sparse. From an instructional designer and researcher’s perspective, I deem problem design to be the first step to ensure not only the proper affordance of the learning goal but also the students’ overall learning process in PBL implementation. PBL problem design is the area I have studied most consistently and passionately. In this paper, …

Insects Have Agency But Probably Not Sentience Because They Lack Social Bonding, J. H. Van Hateren Aug 2016

Insects Have Agency But Probably Not Sentience Because They Lack Social Bonding, J. H. Van Hateren

Animal Sentience

Klein & Barron (2016) argue that insects have sentience because of functional similarities between the insect brain and vertebrate midbrain. Based on a recent theory of agency and consciousness, I argue that the functional similarities merely point to an advanced form of agency. Insects presumably lack the capacity for social bonding that may be required for subjective experiencing.

Optimization Of A Genomic Editing System Using Crispr/Cas9-Induced Site-Specific Gene Integration, Jillian L. Mccool Ms., Nick Hum, Gabriela G. Loots

STAR Program Research Presentations

The CRISPR-Cas system is an adaptive immune system found in bacteria which helps protect against the invasion of other microorganisms. This system induces double stranded breaks at precise genomic loci (1) in which repairs are initiated and insertions of a target are completed in the process. This mechanism can be used in eukaryotic cells in combination with sgRNAs (1) as a tool for genome editing. By using this CRISPR-Cas system, in addition to the “safe harbor locus,” ROSAβ26, the incorporation of a target gene into a site that is not susceptible to gene silencing effects can be achieved through few …

Homo-Oligomerization Of The Gβ5-Rgs7 Complex And Its Regulation By R7bp And G Protein Activation, Junior Tayou Aug 2016

Homo-Oligomerization Of The Gβ5-Rgs7 Complex And Its Regulation By R7bp And G Protein Activation, Junior Tayou

Open Access Dissertations

G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs) mediate the transmission of extracellular signals to generate specific intracellular responses that are crucial for most physiological processes. Timely inactivation of GPCR signal is facilitated by regulators of G-protein signaling (RGS) proteins. This dissertation was focused on the R7 subfamily of RGS proteins. The R7 proteins which include RGS6, RGS7, RGS9 and RGS11 are multi-domain proteins consisting of the RGS, GGL (Gγ-like), DEP (originally identified in Disheveled, EGL-10, and Pleckstrin) and DHEX (DEP helical extension) domains. This subfamily exists as obligate dimers with the atypical Gβ subunit, Gβ5. These complexes are highly expressed in neurons and …

Multipronged Approach To Study Glaucoma-Associated Phenotypes, Sumana Rameshbabu Chintalapudi Aug 2016

Multipronged Approach To Study Glaucoma-Associated Phenotypes, Sumana Rameshbabu Chintalapudi

Theses and Dissertations (ETD)

Glaucoma refers to a group of conditions characterized by death of RGCs, increase in intraocular pressure is usually a precursor to glaucoma and irreversible optic neuropathy leads to visual impairment and blindness. Recent advances have seen a surge of new ideas and technologies to aid in the early detection, efficacious treatments and neuroprotection. Despite advances we face several challenges in understanding the pathophysiology of glaucoma. One of the many challenges scientists and ophthalmologists are facing is, to better understand IOP, its role in glaucomatous damage and design safer, more predictable IOP-lowering therapies. Another challenge is to find a practical method …

“If You’Re Not That As An Asian Woman, You’Re Not Shit As An Asian Woman.”: (Re)Negotiating Racial And Gender Identities, Andi T. Remoquillo

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

This studies utilizes a critical, postcolonial feminist lens when analyzing the ways in which Asian-American women are (re)negotiating their gender and sexual identities within the contemporary United States. Through the use of empirical research, as well historical content and discourse analyses, this M.A. thesis deconstructs the ways in which Western society has constructed Asian/Asian-American women as the hypersexual Other, and revisits the ways in which empowerment, agency, and autonomy are reconfigured by Asian-American women themselves.

College of Natural and Applied Sciences

Refugia have long been studied from paleontological and biogeographical perspectives to understand how populations persisted during past periods of unfavorable climate. Recently, researchers have applied the idea to contemporary landscapes to identify climate change refugia, here defined as areas relatively buffered from contemporary climate change over time that enable persistence of valued physical, ecological, and socio-cultural resources. We differentiate historical and contemporary views, and characterize physical and ecological processes that create and maintain climate change refugia. We then delineate how refugia can fit into existing decision support frameworks for climate adaptation and describe seven steps for managing them. Finally, we …

Chemistry and Biochemistry Faculty Publications

Cyanide poisoning by accidental or intentional exposure poses a severe health risk. The current Food and Drug Administration approved antidotes for cyanide poisoning can be effective, but each suffers from specific major limitations concerning large effective dosage, delayed onset of action, or dependence on enzymes generally confined to specific organs. Dimethyl trisulfide (DMTS), a sulfur donor that detoxifies cyanide by converting it into thiocyanate (a relatively nontoxic cyanide metabolite), is a promising next generation cyanide antidote. Although a validated analytical method to analyze DMTS from any matrix is not currently available, one will be vital for the approval of DMTS …

Blimp-1–Mediated Cd4 T Cell Exhaustion Causes Cd8 T Cell Dysfunction During Chronic Toxoplasmosis, Sujin Hwang, Dustin A. Cobb, Rajarshi Bhadra, Ben Youngblood, Imtiaz A. Khan

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

CD8, but not CD4, T cells are considered critical for control of chronic toxoplasmosis. Although CD8 exhaustion has been previously reported inToxoplasma encephalitis (TE)–susceptible model, our current work demonstrates that CD4 not only become exhausted during chronic toxoplasmosis but this dysfunction is more pronounced than CD8 T cells. Exhausted CD4 population expressed elevated levels of multiple inhibitory receptors concomitant with the reduced functionality and up-regulation of Blimp-1, a transcription factor. Our data demonstrates for the first time that Blimp-1 is a critical regulator for CD4 T cell exhaustion especially in the CD4 central memory cell subset. Using a tamoxifen-dependent …
