The Extent Of Indigenous-Norse Contact And Trade Prior To Columbus, Donald E. Warden Aug 2016

The Extent Of Indigenous-Norse Contact And Trade Prior To Columbus, Donald E. Warden

Oglethorpe Journal of Undergraduate Research

Norse exploration during the medieval period was widespread and diverse in location. Of the many places visited by the Norse, North America has continued to be surrounded by mystery. The full extent of Norse exploration in North America is a growing field and the extent of their contact and trade with Indigenous Americans is becoming increasingly known. A thorough compilation of the evidence allows for significant, new conclusions to be made about Norse presence in the Americas.

Interleukin-6 Increases Matrix Metalloproteinase-14 (Mmp-14) Levels Via Down-Regulation Of P53 To Drive Cancer Progression, Jillian Cathcart, Anna Banach, Alice Liu, Jun Chen, Michael S. Goligorsky, Jian Cao Aug 2016

Interleukin-6 Increases Matrix Metalloproteinase-14 (Mmp-14) Levels Via Down-Regulation Of P53 To Drive Cancer Progression, Jillian Cathcart, Anna Banach, Alice Liu, Jun Chen, Michael S. Goligorsky, Jian Cao

NYMC Faculty Publications

Matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) play critical roles in cancer invasion and metastasis by digesting basement membrane and extracellular matrix (ECM). Much attention has focused on the enzymatic activities of MMPs; however, the regulatory mechanism of MMP expression remains elusive. By employing bioinformatics analysis, we identified a potential p53 response element within the MMP-14 promoter. Experimentally, we found that p53 can repress MMP-14 promoter activity, whereas deletion of this p53 response element abrogated this effect. Furthermore, we found that p53 expression decreases MMP-14 mRNA and protein levels and attenuates MMP-14-mediated cellular functions. Additional promoter analysis and chromatin immunoprecipitation studies identified a mechanism …

Application Of Polyacrylamide (Pam) Through Lay-Flay Polyethylene Tubing: Effects On Infiltration, Erosion, N And P Transport, And Corn Grain Yield, Jacob P. Mcneal Aug 2016

Application Of Polyacrylamide (Pam) Through Lay-Flay Polyethylene Tubing: Effects On Infiltration, Erosion, N And P Transport, And Corn Grain Yield, Jacob P. Mcneal

Theses and Dissertations

Polyacrylamides (PAMs) are water-soluble, long-chain synthetic organic polymers that, when applied as a soil amendment, purportedly improves infiltration, decreases sediment and agrochemical transport, and improves crop yield. There is a paucity of data, however, on the effect of PAM applied through laylat polyethylene tubing on infiltration, erosion, agrochemical transport, and crop yield for Mid-South soils in furrow irrigated environments. The objective of this thesis was to compile and analyze PAM use in agricultural settings in the United States, and to conduct a 2 year field experiment to assess PAM effects on infiltration, erosion, N and P transport, and corn grain …

Gold Nanostars For Efficient In Vitro And In Vivo Real-Time Sers Detection And Drug Delivery Via Plasmonic-Tunable Raman/Ftir Imaging, Furong Tian, Joao Conde, Chenchen Bao, Yunsheng Chen, James Curtin, Daxiang Cui

Articles

The application of plasmonic-enhanced Raman imaging of cancer cells and drug delivery is gaining momentum. Here, we propose a new theranostic strategy based on an efficient plasmonic-tunable Raman/Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy imaging, to simultaneously evaluate the anticancer drug scattering cellular imaging and the Raman scattering molecular vibration signals in living cells. This technique allows to monitoring the drug release throughout the cell cycle and in vivo biodistribution and biocompatibility with low dose drug therapy (200 µg/mL) and low toxicity effect. This system can directly track in real-time the delivery and release of an anticancer drug (mitoxantrone, MTX) from gold …

Does Tailoring Instructional Style To A Medical Student's Self-Perceived Learning Style Improve Performance When Teaching Intravenous Catheter Placement? A Randomized Controlled Study., Dimitrios Papanagnou, Antonio Serrano, Kaitlyn Barkley, Shruti Chandra, Nicholas Governatori, Nicole Piela, Gregory K. Wanner, Richard Shin

Department of Emergency Medicine Faculty Papers

BACKGROUND: Students may have different learning styles. It is unclear, however, whether tailoring instructional methods for a student's preferred learning style improves educational outcomes when teaching procedures. The authors sought to examine whether teaching to a student's self-perceived learning style improved the acquisition of intravenous (IV) catheter placement skills. The authors hypothesized that matching a medical student's preferred learning style with the instructor's teaching style would increase the success of placing an IV catheter.

METHODS: Using the VARK model (i.e., visual [V], auditory [A], read/write [R] and kinesthetic [K]), third-year medical students reported their self-perceived learning style and were subsequently …

Itar: A Web Server For Identifying Target Genes Of Transcription Factors Using Chip-Seq Or Chip-Chip Data, Chia-Chun Yang, Erik H. Andrews, Min-Hsuan Chen, Wan-Yu Wang

Dartmouth Scholarship

Chromatin immunoprecipitation followed by massively parallel DNA sequencing (ChIP-seq) or microarray hybridization (ChIP-chip) has been widely used to determine the genomic occupation of transcription factors (TFs). We have previously developed a probabilistic method, called TIP (Target Identification from Profiles), to identify TF target genes using ChIP-seq/ChIP-chip data. To achieve high specificity, TIP applies a conservative method to estimate significance of target genes, with the trade-off being a relatively low sensitivity of target gene identification compared to other methods. Additionally, TIP’s output does not render binding-peak locations or intensity, information highly useful for visualization and general experimental biological use, while the …

Examining Diversity And Inclusion In The Federal Workforce And The Impact Of Inclusion On Employee Engagement, Ashley N. Settles Aug 2016

Examining Diversity And Inclusion In The Federal Workforce And The Impact Of Inclusion On Employee Engagement, Ashley N. Settles

Theses and Dissertations

As a result of globalization, developing markets, and demographic changes in the U.S. labor force, the United States has become increasingly diverse. Therefore, diversity and inclusion is a vital part of our society. Diversity is often viewed as a double-edge sword. Proponents argue that the benefits of diversity include greater creativity, innovation, and improved organizational performance. Opponents argue that organizational diversity is costly, increases conflict, and is overall unfair. No matter what side of the diversity argument that you find yourself, there is a general sentiment that diversity alone, is not enough. The goal is to make workplaces inclusive. In …

The Evolution Of Wing Pattern In Micropterigidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera), Sandra Rose Schachat Aug 2016

The Evolution Of Wing Pattern In Micropterigidae (Insecta: Lepidoptera), Sandra Rose Schachat

Theses and Dissertations

Despite the biological importance of lepidopteran wing patterns, homologies between pattern elements in different lineages are still not understood. Though plesiomorphic wing veins influence color patterning even when not expressed in the adult wing, most studies of wing pattern evolution have focused on derived taxa with reduced venation. Here I address this gap with an examination of Micropterigidae, a very early-diverged family in which all known plesiomorphic lepidopteran veins are expressed in the adult wing. Differences between the coloration of transverse bands in Micropterix and Sabatinca suggest that homologies exist between the contrast boundaries that divide wing pattern elements. Because …

Precipitation Of Aragonite Under Anoxic Conditions: An Experimental Study, Jonney Mitchell Aug 2016

Precipitation Of Aragonite Under Anoxic Conditions: An Experimental Study, Jonney Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Calcium carbonate minerals (CaCO3) are important for our understanding of past marine conditions as well as tools for constructing paleoclimate. However, very little experimental work has been done to determine the influence of oxygen depletion on the geochemistry of CaCO3. To determine how oxygen depletion affects elemental incorporation and partitioning, aragonite was grown inorganically in artificial seawater at pressures of 1 atm and 5 bars (0.1%CH4-N2 mixture). Solution of Na2CO3 was used to induce aragonite precipitation. N2 was bubbled through solution in order to minimize oxygen content and iron powder was used to trap remaining O2. Experimental products (aragonite and …

Efficacy Of Usda Approved Antimicrobials During Second Processing In Reducing Salmonella And Campylobacter On Chicken Parts And Ground Chicken Frames, Alisha Janelle Moore

Theses and Dissertations

The efficacy of USDA approved antimicrobials was evaluated in reducing Salmonella and Campylobacter on ground chicken frames and chicken breast fillets. Chicken frames dip treated with peracetic acid (PAA), lauric arginate (LAE), cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) and acidified lactic acid (ALA) reduced Salmonella and Campylobacter counts in ground chicken frames without affecting meat pH and color. PAA and LAE reduced Salmonella by 0.9 log on d0 whereas on d1, PAA and CPC reduced by 1.4 and 0.9 log CFU/g respectively. PAA, ALA, propionic acid and LAE significantly reduced Campylobacter by 0.7, 1.0, 1.3, and 1.2 log CFU/g, respectively. On chicken breast …

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell Aug 2016

Addressing Questions Of Prehistoric Occupation Seasonality At Freshwater Mussel Shell Ring Sites In The Mississippi Delta: Applications In Carbonate Geochemistry And Zooarchaeology, Joseph Alan Mitchell

Theses and Dissertations

Seasonality estimates based on archaeological shellfish remains have been an important component of settlement pattern reconstruction. Investigations of this nature allow researchers to place prehistoric people on the landscape at points in space at different times of the year. Many of the previous seasonality studies, however, have focused on marine species from coastal sites, with little attention given to freshwater locales, especially ones in the Mississippi Delta. To address that disparity, this study examines freshwater mussel “season of capture” via analysis of stable oxygen isotope ratios in specimens recovered from two Late Woodland sites located along the Yazoo River, Mississippi. …

The Ecological Significance Of Phyllosphere Leaf Traits On Throughfall Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, And Leaf Litter Quality Among Oak (Quercus Spp.) Species In The Southeastern United States, Katy Elizabeth Limpert Aug 2016

The Ecological Significance Of Phyllosphere Leaf Traits On Throughfall Hydrology, Biogeochemistry, And Leaf Litter Quality Among Oak (Quercus Spp.) Species In The Southeastern United States, Katy Elizabeth Limpert

Theses and Dissertations

Oaks (Quercus spp.) are a dominant genus in forests across the United States that have been declining due to fire suppression and forest mesophication. The reduction of these species may alter forest hydrologic and biogeochemical cycling. Canopy-derived nutrients and interspecific temporal distribution of leaves were quantified under oak and hickory (Carya spp.) species in Mississippi during 2014-2016. Throughfall quantity and chemistry were measured during every storm event under oak and hickory species. Interspecific leaf litter was collected weekly to quantify the timing of leaf fall and leaf litter nutrient content. Throughfall volume and solute fluxes were impacted by seasonality. Mg2+ …

Head Of Household Socioeconomic Status Effect On Dietary Intake Of Children, Samantha Ann Willcutt Aug 2016

Head Of Household Socioeconomic Status Effect On Dietary Intake Of Children, Samantha Ann Willcutt

Theses and Dissertations

Obesity is considered an epidemic and a precursor for many diseases. Children from lower income families are more likely to be obese, however previous studies on differences in child dietary intake based on parental income show mixed results. This study used NHANES 2005-2010 data to examine reported food consumption of children ages 6 to 11. Comparisons were made between children (n = 1433) of lower income parents (PIR <= 1.85) and children (n = 1162) of higher income parents (PIR > 1.85). Variables included total fruit and vegetable intake, total energy, food groups, oils, fiber, total sugar, added sugars and solid fats. SUDAAN was used to analyze data and differences were significant at …
