Video Captions For Online Courses: Do Youtube’S Auto-Generated Captions Meet Deaf Students’ Needs?, Becky Sue Parton
Video Captions For Online Courses: Do Youtube’S Auto-Generated Captions Meet Deaf Students’ Needs?, Becky Sue Parton
Faculty Research at Morehead State University
Providing captions for videos used in online courses is an area of interest for institutions of higher education. There are legal and ethical ramifications as well as time constraints to consider. Captioning tools are available, but some universities rely on the auto-generated YouTube captions. This study looked at a particular type of video—the weekly informal news update created by individual professors for their online classes—to see if automatic captions (also known as subtitles) are sufficiently accurate to meet the needs of deaf students. A total of 68 minutes of video captions were analysed and 525 phrase-level errors were found. On …
Psychologically Healthy Eating And Nutritionally Healthy Eating: Exploring A Two-Factor Theory Of Healthy Eating, Katherine E. Belon
Psychologically Healthy Eating And Nutritionally Healthy Eating: Exploring A Two-Factor Theory Of Healthy Eating, Katherine E. Belon
Psychology ETDs
Background: While much research has investigated disordered eating, obesity, and weight loss treatments, less work has focused on creating a positive definition of psychologically healthy eating. Such a definition could inform obesity and eating disorder treatments. While intuitive eating appears to approximate a definition of psychologically healthy eating, it was believed that adding concepts of moderation, flexibility, and food enjoyment would improve its construct validity, as previous research has supported these constructs as important for psychologically healthy eating. The current paper presents a two-factor model of healthy eating, one that incorporates both psychologically healthy and nutritionally healthy eating. Method: A …

Hushgah Adiish The Badlands Lodge: A Hidatsa Cultural Hub On The Upper-Missouri River In The Late Nineteenth Century, Michael Barthelemy Jr
History ETDs
The way our people, the Hidatsa, begin a narrative about older times is There was smoke in the village. It draws one into this idea that the village was prosperous and that the people had wood to burn and cook fires, with plenty of food for all. This past is viewed longingly by recent generations because of the hardships the people have endured since the introduction of European disease and relocation to lands our people deem undesirable. This very same nostalgia is what fueled an exodus from Like-A-Fishhook Village, driving the Crow-Flies-High Band of Hidatsa and Mandan Indians 120 miles …
My Brother, My Slave: The Social And Cultural Role Of Slavery Among The Navajo, Neil Dodge
My Brother, My Slave: The Social And Cultural Role Of Slavery Among The Navajo, Neil Dodge
History ETDs
This thesis concerns the lives of captives taken by the Navajo people during the 1846-1863-time period in New Mexico. The goals of this work are two-fold: First, to expand upon the available literature regarding the captivity experience of people taken in raids or conflict and to explain those captives roles within a Navajo context. The second goal addresses the need for more study of American Indian practices regarding slavery, particularly through the use of American Indian oral tradition and stories. This has been accomplished through the use of a comparative slavery analysis with another global indigenous culture. Further, through the …

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
A recent study about the effectiveness of subgoal labeling in an introductory computer science programming course both supported previous research and produced some puzzling results. In this study, we replicate the experiment with a different student population to determine if the results are repeatable. We also gave the experimental task to students in a follow-on course to explore if they had indeed mastered the programming concept. We found that the previous puzzling results were repeated. In addition, for the novice programmers, we found a statistically significant difference in performance based on whether the student had previous programming courses in high …

The objective of this study was to quantify the use of multimedia resources as well as the most common avenues of delivery in dental hygiene (DH) education. In addition, this study evaluated any educational delivery methods that may be required by the responding programs to determine if MMR use is standard practice in DH education. This study followed a descriptive quantitative primary research approach. Invitation to participate in a 42-item electronic survey facilitated through SurveyMonkey was emailed to 316 …
"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong
"The Bellows / Of Experience": The Modernist Love Poem And Its Legacy, Stephanie Spong
English Language and Literature ETDs
The vein of experimental love poetry examined in this project takes advantage of the friction generated by charging both form and content with innovation. The troubled relationship between sex and power is knit directly into the long and dynamic history of love poetry, but there has yet to be a published monograph on the modernist love poem and its implications for literary history. This dissertation fills a major gap in scholarship and speaks to the broader social concerns addressed by public discourse on sex, sexuality, and eros. The body of modernist love poetry includes allusions to traditional love poetry—a tradition …

From Sensory Perception To Lexical-Semantic Processing: An Erp Study In Non-Verbal Children With Autism, Chiara Cantiani, Naseem A. Choudhury, Yan H. Yu, Valerie L. Shafer, Richard G. Schwartz, April A. Benasich
Publications and Research
This study examines electrocortical activity associated with visual and auditory sensory perception and lexical-semantic processing in nonverbal (NV) or minimally-verbal (MV) children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Currently, there is no agreement on whether these children comprehend incoming linguistic information and whether their perception is comparable to that of typically developing children. Event-related potentials (ERPs) of 10 NV/MV children with ASD and 10 neurotypical children were recorded during a picture-word matching paradigm. Atypical ERP responses were evident at all levels of processing in children with ASD. Basic perceptual processing was delayed in both visual and auditory domains but overall was …
Voice Commands Coordination Between The Same App On Multiple Devices, Jakub Miara
Voice Commands Coordination Between The Same App On Multiple Devices, Jakub Miara
Defensive Publications Series
A system and method are disclosed for voice command coordination between instances of the same application running on multiple devices. The devices could be any that process voice commands, such as smartphones, tablets, smartwatches, laptops or IoT devices. The system coordinates the devices by broadcasting short communicates using humaninaudible sonic frequencies. In the first step of the method, the user gives a voice command, which is received in a number of devices that interpret the command. Each device determines a relevancy score of the command and then broadcasts the score as short communicates using inaudible sonic frequencies that are received …

Assisted Frame Interpolation For Animated 2d/3d Graphics, Simon Smith, Anthony Mantler
Defensive Publications Series
Disclosed are a system and method to overcome dropped frame problems encountered during displaying of animated 3D (or accelerated 2D) graphics. The 3D rendering hardware generates a vector field describing the objects being displayed, which is achieved by the 3D software program. The motion vector information in a frame is used to displace the rendered values to create a future interpolated frame. A similar technique is used to create a future interpolated vector buffer. The interpolating frames technique provide more accurate motion estimates without significant impact on display quality, adding load to CPU or GPU, or increasing latency. The method …

CHARITABLE ENDEAVORS OFTEN FACE RESOURCE CONSTRAINTS AND RELY ON ALTRUISM FOR MONETARY DONATIONS NECESSARY TO PURSUE MISSION-DRIVEN OPERATIONS. IMPLEMENTATION OF AN HONOR-BASED PAYMENT SYSTEM TO ATTRACT DONATIONS ATTEMPTS TO ELIMINATE SOME PORTION OF THE COSTS ASSOCIATED WITH FUNDRAISING ACTIVITY. HOWEVER, HONOR-BASED SYSTEMS ARE NOT MONITORED AND, THEREFORE, SUSCEPTIBLE TO UNDERPAYMENT AND THEFT. THIS STUDY EXAMINES HOW POSTING A MESSAGE COMMUNICATING A NEGATIVE INJUNCTIVE NORM AFFECTS CHARITABLE DONATIONS RESULTING FROM PROVISION OF A SNACK BOX USING AN HONOR-BASED PAYMENT SYSTEM. THE STUDY FINDS THAT PRESENTATION OF AN INJUNCTIVE NORM DISSUADES CONTRIBUTIONS FROM DONORS INCLINED TOWARD SLIGHT UNDERPAYMENT BUT DOES NOT DETER …
Subjective Experience In Insects: Definitions And Other Difficulties, Shelley Adamo
Subjective Experience In Insects: Definitions And Other Difficulties, Shelley Adamo
Animal Sentience
Whether insects have the potential for subjective experiences depends on the definition of subjective experience. The definition used by Klein & Barron (2016) is an unusually liberal one and could be used to argue that some modern robots have subjective experiences. From an evolutionary perspective, the additional neurons needed to produce subjective experiences will be proportionately more expensive for insects than for mammals because of the small size of the insect brain. This greater cost could weaken selection for such traits. Minimally, it may be premature to assume that small neuronal number is unimportant in determining the capacity for consciousness.

Gender In 17th Century Southern New England, Megan K. Willison
Master's Theses
This thesis, written in the form of two broadly related articles, aims to address questions related to topics of gender, identity, cultural change and continuity, and the materiality of social institutions. Each article investigates how artifacts, as physical objects unintentionally or purposefully discarded, represent and reflect human behavior, societal ideologies, and cultural infrastructures. Using primary sources, archaeological evidence, and linguistic data, each article proposes that certain artifact classes are representative of larger societal ideals and cultural mores, such as gender systems and ways of defining one's gender identity. The first article studies these topics through the analysis of funerary remains …

Osmoregulatory Physiology And Its Evolution In The Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus Aculeatus), Jeffrey N. Divino
Doctoral Dissertations
Maintaining ion balance in environments of changing salinity is one of the greatest physiological challenges facing aquatic organisms and by comparing populations inhabiting different salinity regimes, we can learn how physiological plasticity evolves in response to local osmotic stress. I characterized the evolution of osmoregulatory responses in representative marine, anadromous, and freshwater (FW) populations of Threespine Stickleback (Gasterosteus aculeatus) by comparing survival and physiological measures in F1-generation fish following salinity challenge. Juveniles from a population landlocked for ~10,000 years displayed ontogenetically-delayed seawater (SW) tolerance, a lower maximum salinity threshold, and did not upregulate the Na+ …

Creating large conservation zones in remote areas, with less intense stakeholder overlap and limited environmental information, requires periodic review to ensure zonation mitigates primary threats and fill gaps in representation, while achieving conservation targets. Follow-up reviews can utilise improved methods and data, potentially identifying new planning options yielding a desirable balance between stakeholder interests. This research explored a marine zoning system in north-west Australia–a biodiverse area with poorly documented biota. Although remote, it is economically significant (i.e. petroleum extraction and fishing). Stakeholder engagement was used to source the best available biodiversity and socio-economic data and advanced spatial analyses produced 765 …
Taking Swarms To The Field: Decentralized Algorithms For Underwater Swarms, Sherif Ahmed Tolba
Taking Swarms To The Field: Decentralized Algorithms For Underwater Swarms, Sherif Ahmed Tolba
Doctoral Dissertations
Modern ocean exploration and sensing approaches have been mainly based on Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs), Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs), and/or static Underwater Acoustic Sensor Networks (UASNs) deployments. Individual AUVs and ROVs represent a single point of failure in addition to being bulky and expensive as vehicles are usually full-featured and sophisticated. UASNs have traditionally been statically deployed. This limits their use to original deployment locations and renders them unsuitable for search tasks. Swarm Robotics (SR) are a natural, better alternative. Swarms possess superior features over a sophisticated AUV; they are smaller, cheaper, robust, reliable, and scalable by design and definition. …

Successful technical presentations require you to filter …
What Have We Learned From The Departures Of Female Superintendents?, Kerry Kathleen Robinson
What Have We Learned From The Departures Of Female Superintendents?, Kerry Kathleen Robinson
Journal of Women in Educational Leadership
The purpose of this qualitative study of 20 female former superintendents in Virginia was to answer (1) What factors cause women superintendents to move and/or leave the superintendency? and (2) How do the women construct the story of their moving or leaving? Thematic analysis of the interview narratives discerned four major themes in the stories of these women: (1) Expectations of job duties; (2) Exhaustion as Superwoman; (3) Conflict with stakeholders; and (4) Departure on their own terms and timelines. This study contributes to the research on women in the superintendency and suggests implications for research, policy, and practice.

The Receptacular Nectar Tubes Of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae): A Study Of Development, Length Variation, And Histology, Timothy Tsai
The Receptacular Nectar Tubes Of Pelargonium (Geraniaceae): A Study Of Development, Length Variation, And Histology, Timothy Tsai
Master's Theses
The nectaries of Pelargonium are unusual in the Geraniaceae in that the flowers only have one deep dorsal tube as opposed to five shallow canals. The genus is also known for having great length variation in nectar tubes, variation that has been suggested to play an important role in the diversification of this genus. Interpretations of Pelargonium nectaries contradict each other as some describe the nectar tube as an adnate sepal spur while others describe it as an hypanthial tube as a result of an elongate receptacle. In addition, the developmental basis of differing nectar tube lengths is unknown.

The Role Of N-Methyl D-Aspartate Receptors In The Development Of The Human Cerebral Cortex, Inseyah Bagasrawala
The Role Of N-Methyl D-Aspartate Receptors In The Development Of The Human Cerebral Cortex, Inseyah Bagasrawala
Doctoral Dissertations
N-Methyl D-Aspartate receptors (NMDARs), a subtype of glutamate receptors, are important in neural development. The distribution and function of these receptors are well-studied in rodent and adult human brains, but far less is known about NMDARs in the human fetal cerebral cortex. The human cerebral cortex develops from multipotent neural progenitors called the radial glia cells (RGCs) that give rise to intermediate and interneuron progenitors, neurons, and glial cells. In my thesis, I studied the distribution of NMDAR subunits, NR1, NR2A and NR2B, in the human cerebral cortex from 10 to 24 gestational weeks (gw), a period of intense neurogenesis …
