Punishing On A Curve, Adi Leibovitch Aug 2016

Punishing On A Curve, Adi Leibovitch

Virginia Journal of Criminal Law

Does the punishment of one defendant change because of how she fares in comparison to the other defendants on the judge’s docket? This article demonstrates that the troubling answer is yes. Judges sentence the same case more harshly when their caseloads contain relatively milder offenses, and more leniently when their caseloads contain more serious crimes. I call this problem “punishing on a curve.”

Consequently, the article shows how such relative sentencing patterns put into question the prevailing practice of establishing specialized courts or courts of limited jurisdiction. Because judges are punishing on a curve, the court’s jurisdiction systematically shapes sentencing …

What Do We Owe Animals As Persons?, Judith Benz-Schwarzburg Aug 2016

What Do We Owe Animals As Persons?, Judith Benz-Schwarzburg

Animal Sentience

Rowlands (2016) concentrates strictly on the metaphysical concept of person, but his notion of animal personhood bears a moral dimension (Monsó, 2016). His definition of pre-reflective self-awareness has a focus on sentience and on the lived body of a person as well as on her implicit awareness of her own goals. Interestingly, these also play a key role in animal welfare science, as well as in animal rights theories that value the interests of animals. Thus, Rowlands’s concept shows connectivity with both major fields of animal ethics. His metaphysical arguments might indeed contain a strong answer to the question of …

Extreme Poverty Affects Many College Students., Aldemaro Romero Jr. Aug 2016

Extreme Poverty Affects Many College Students., Aldemaro Romero Jr.

Publications and Research

One of the most painful realities of higher education in the 21st century – and one that gets very little attention – is the fact that some college students live in extreme poverty, oftentimes sleeping in libraries, cars, or temporarily with friends. Despite the extreme conditions under which they live, or in many cases because of them, these students still seek the education and training needed to be able to get a job and move out of poverty. Some colleges and universities are taking steps to help.

A Study Of Chemistry: For Wind Ensemble, Morgan Duff Aug 2016

A Study Of Chemistry: For Wind Ensemble, Morgan Duff

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Many musicians have a limited understanding of chemistry, while many chemists aren't familiar with details of music theory or composition. Through the composition of a four-part musical work based entirely on several broad areas of chemistry, certain relationships have been shown between music and chemistry. Because of the overlap between certain scientific concepts and many aspects of music theory, it is possible for members of both fields to use what they already know in order to gain a deeper understanding of the other, very different, subject. Because everyone has learning strengths in differing areas, I believe the use of disciplinary …

Representations And Models For Large-Scale Video Understanding, Du Le Hong Tran Aug 2016

Representations And Models For Large-Scale Video Understanding, Du Le Hong Tran

Dartmouth College Ph.D Dissertations

In this thesis, we investigate different representations and models for large-scale video understanding. These methods include a mid-level representation for action recognition, a deep-learned representation for video analysis, a generic convolutional network architecture for video voxel prediction, and a new high-level task and benchmark of video comprehension. First, we present EXMOVES, a mid-level representation for scalable action recognition. The entries in EXMOVES representation are the calibrated outputs of a set of movement classifiers over spatial-temporal volumes of the input video. Each movement classifier is a simple exemplar-SVM trained on low-level features. Our EXMOVES requires a minimal amount of supervision while …

India: Distributed Solar Dryer, Robert Greene, Maria Czerwonka

ETHOS Technical Reports

A team of two engineers travelled to Mysore, India arriving in the early summer of 2016 and stayed for ten weeks. The engineers partnered with a local non-governmental organization to develop a technology that would improve the livelihoods of the Organization for the Development of People (ODP)’s target population. After researching the needs of the population as well as meeting with the leaders of ODP the engineers decided to create a passive solar dryer capable of drying and preserving a variety of fruits and vegetables. The technology was designed to be accessible to rural farmers in small communities. A prototype …

Steps In Time: An Exploration Of Tap Dance Education, Sara Pecina Aug 2016

Steps In Time: An Exploration Of Tap Dance Education, Sara Pecina

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Tap dance is an indigenous American art form that not only holds a valuable presence in the world of entertainment but also boasts an important historical background. From the slave quarters on plantations to Hollywood’s silver screen, the development of tap dance mirrors the story of American history. Tap dance must be preserved because of its cultural significance in American history; likewise, it is imperative for dancers to understand its development in order to appreciate the art and for today’s artists to continue the growth and presence of tap dance in America. However, many dance educators today focus solely on …

The Preservation Of Identity: A Narrative Examination Of National Parks In Kentucky, Abigail Ponder Aug 2016

The Preservation Of Identity: A Narrative Examination Of National Parks In Kentucky, Abigail Ponder

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

National parks are symbols of national identity. They tell the history of places—personal legacies and natural phenomena. My Capstone Experience/Thesis (CE/T) project for the Honors College at WKU features two stories that fuse fiction and non-fiction conventions to share the experiences of national parks in Kentucky. Currently, the National Park Service is celebrating its centennial anniversary at parks across the nation. First established in 1916 by President Woodrow Wilson, the national parks have become symbols of the quintessential American experience: serving as memorials to nature, to history, and to culture. As such, these stories that take place at Mammoth Cave …

A Landscape Approach To Determining And Predicting Juvenile Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Movement Timing And Growth Patterns Prior To Ocean Entry, Amelia Lee Johnson Aug 2016

A Landscape Approach To Determining And Predicting Juvenile Coho Salmon (Oncorhynchus Kisutch) Movement Timing And Growth Patterns Prior To Ocean Entry, Amelia Lee Johnson

Dissertations and Theses

Coho salmon (Oncorhynchus kisutch) rely on unique habitats during the winter season, which may dictate how much individuals may grow and when migration from freshwater rearing habitat to the ocean occurs. Here I analyze movement timing and growth patterns for coho salmon through a field-based study and a literature review. For the field portion, I examined hatchery-stocked juvenile coho salmon across four stream basins in the Russian River watershed, California to determine the relative importance of climate, landscape, and fish size metrics in predicting movement and growth patterns over a winter rearing and spring smolt outmigration time period …

Butterflies, Adinah Bolden

First-Gen Voices: Creative and Critical Narratives on the First-Generation College Experience

Adinah Bolden is a Los Angeles-based graduate of Loyola Marymount University. She is a pop culture and history loving cynic who has overcome adversity in many matters to work toward leading a fulfilling and exciting post-graduate life. Like many young adults, Bolden has struggled with labels, identity, and personal growth, which she addresses in this narrative. On this First To Go Abroad trip to the Dominican Republic, she deeply identified with the symbol of the butterfly, which represents an opposition to political tyranny, racial imperialism, and national injustice.
