Does Persistent Hiv Replication Explain Continued Lymphoma Incidence In The Era Of Effective Antiretroviral Therapy?, Jennifer Totonchy, Ethel Cesarman
Does Persistent Hiv Replication Explain Continued Lymphoma Incidence In The Era Of Effective Antiretroviral Therapy?, Jennifer Totonchy, Ethel Cesarman
Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research
Non-Hodgkin lymphomas are highly increased in incidence in individuals infected with HIV, and this continues to be the case in spite of highly effective combined antiretroviral therapy (cART). New evidence has demonstrated that while successful virtual recovery of CD4 counts and elimination of HIV from peripheral blood can be achieved with cART, viral replication can still occur in lymphoid tissues. In addition, recent studies have suggested that adipose tissue provides an additional reservoir for HIV-infected macrophages and T lymphocytes even in the context of successful cART therapy. In this review article, we discuss possible mechanisms leading to the development of …
Differentiating The Transnational From The National In A Multicultural Setting: Identity In Persepolis And Rush Hour, Laura A. Kasper
Differentiating The Transnational From The National In A Multicultural Setting: Identity In Persepolis And Rush Hour, Laura A. Kasper
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
This essay explores the differences between transnational identities and national identities in a multicultural setting by juxtaposing the films Persepolis and Rush Hour. Furthermore, it examines the characteristics of both transnational and national identities and how they are represented in film. In an increasingly globalized world, it is important to distinguish these two types of identity and consider how these individuals interact with today’s society; thus, this essay asks readers to think about the influence that the commingling of transnational and national identities has on the modern world.
Does Oppressed Religious Liberty Cause An Uprising In Terror Attacks?, Ansley N. Miller
Does Oppressed Religious Liberty Cause An Uprising In Terror Attacks?, Ansley N. Miller
The Kennesaw Journal of Undergraduate Research
The political community's research comes across as inconclusive in regard to the relationship between liberty and terrorism, given the differing opinions on what defines 'liberty' and 'terrorism.' Having stated that, this research tries to the idea of religious liberty in regards to overall terrorism. Most research up to 2016 has been done on terrorist data after 2001 until 2010 (in some cases 2012.) This research expands to the year 2014 to analyze the connection between religious oppression by country governments and their effect on the number of terror attacks in each country in the span of one year. My research …

Immunomodulators As Therapeutic Agents In Mitigating The Progression Of Parkinson's Disease, Bethany Grimmig, Josh Morganti, Kevin Nash, Paula C. Bickford
Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder that primarily afflicts the elderly. It is characterized by motor dysfunction due to extensive neuron loss in the substantia nigra pars compacta. There are multiple biological processes that are negatively impacted during the pathogenesis of PD, and are implicated in the cell death in this region. Neuroinflammation is evidently involved in PD pathology and mitigating the inflammatory cascade has been a therapeutic strategy. Age is the number one risk factor for PD and thus needs to be considered in the context of disease pathology. Here, we discuss the role of neuroinflammation within …
Sperm Morphometrics, Spermatogenesis, And Testicular Cycle Of The Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys Aestivus), John Douglas Konvalina
Sperm Morphometrics, Spermatogenesis, And Testicular Cycle Of The Rough Greensnake (Opheodrys Aestivus), John Douglas Konvalina
Student Theses and Dissertations
Spermatogenesis in ophidians is understudied, with little information on the rough greensnake, Opheodrys aestivus available. A cell wheel showing the chronological development of germ cell stages for this species was constructed. Sperm morphometrics were completed and compared with those of Nerodia rhombifer, the diamondback watersnake. Both species had similar sperm head length, while Opheodrys aestivus had significantly longer total sperm length. Total sperm length was positively correlated (r = 0.997, p < 0.001) with sperm tail length. Seminiferous tubule diameter and seminiferous tubule epithelial height were measured from Arkansas (AR) specimens and compared with those of Alabama (AL) specimens and AR measurements were found to be significantly greater in length. Future studies of O. aestivus need to investigate the testicular cycle in other parts of its geographic distribution to see if the monthly pattern is consistent and sperm morphometrics should be examined for other species within the family Colubridae.

Staging Dunhuang Mogao Caves: Treasures From Along The Silk Road, Lanlan Kuang
Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works
Historically a frontier metropolis, Dunhuang was a strategic site along the Silk Road in northwestern China, a crossroads of trade, and a locus for religious, cultural, and intellectual influences since the Han dynasty (206 B.C.E.–220 C.E.). The 492 caves at the Mogao cliff near the modern town of Dunhuang have served as temples, sites for performative events, and an archive that consisted of medieval Chinese paintings and Buddhist sutras. Today, the Dunhuang Mogao Caves is among one of the most well-known UNESCO heritage sites along the ancient Silk Road. With technological advancements, the staging processes of the Dunhuang Mogao Caves …

Introduction: The Gentrification Game, Barbara Lewis
Introduction: The Gentrification Game, Barbara Lewis
Trotter Review
In real estate talk, there are only three things that matter, and they are location, location, location. The same is true in dispossession, which translates into the freeing up of location so that it can be possessed by others. Another term that has cropped up fairly recently, much in use in the crossover between the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, is gentrification, which has a benign face as well as one that is not so kindly, like the paired tragic and comic masks of classic drama.
In this issue of the Trotter Review, we explore gentrification and its alternate, dispossession, …
Palmitoyl Acyltransferase Dhhc21 Mediates Endothelial Dysfunction In Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Richard S. Beard Jr.
Palmitoyl Acyltransferase Dhhc21 Mediates Endothelial Dysfunction In Systemic Inflammatory Response Syndrome, Richard S. Beard Jr.
Biomedical Research Institute Publications and Presentations
Endothelial dysfunction is a hallmark of systemic inflammatory response underlying multiple organ failure. Here we report a novel function of DHHC-containing palmitoyl acyltransferases (PATs) in mediating endothelial inflammation. Pharmacological inhibition of PATs attenuates barrier leakage and leucocyte adhesion induced by endothelial junction hyperpermeability and ICAM-1 expression during inflammation. Among 11 DHHCs detected in vascular endothelium, DHHC21 is required for barrier response. Mice with DHHC21 function deficiency (Zdhhc21dep/dep) exhibit marked resistance to injury, characterized by reduced plasma leakage, decreased leucocyte adhesion and ameliorated lung pathology, culminating in improved survival. Endothelial cells from Zdhhc21dep/dep display blunted barrier dysfunction and …
