Measurement Of Copper Deficiency In Humans: Ccs As A Novel Biomarker Of Copper Status In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Emily Watson
Measurement Of Copper Deficiency In Humans: Ccs As A Novel Biomarker Of Copper Status In Bariatric Surgery Patients, Emily Watson
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Bariatric surgery is a popular and effective treatment for obesity. However, an unfavorable consequence for patients who have had bariatric surgery is copper (Cu) deficiency. Current screening methods used for Cu deficiency are neither sensitive nor specifi c enough to diagnose Cu deficiency or detect changes in Cu status. The purpose of this research is to determine if concentrations of copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase (CCS) in erythrocytes are associated with serum Cu concentrations in bariatric surgery patients, by assessing whether changes in CCS concentrations can be observed in response to altering Cu status when patients are supplemented with Cu …
Anisotropy Scanning: Novel Imaging Analysis For Beef Tenderness, Derico Setyabrata
Anisotropy Scanning: Novel Imaging Analysis For Beef Tenderness, Derico Setyabrata
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
Providing consistently high-eating-quality meat products to consumers is crucial for the meat industry. Inconsistent meat tenderness has been identified as one of the major quality-related challenges for the meat industry. Thus, development of a precise and consistent method to predict meat tenderness will greatly benefit the meat industry by enabling it to ensure a constant high-quality meat supply to consumers. A novel noninvasive anisotropic image scanning technology has been recently developed to evaluate and predict microstructural and physicochemical changes in muscle. Thus, the objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of the novel anisotropic imaging system in assessing …
Degeneration Of Neuronal Mitochondria In Parkinson’S Disease: Mitochondrial Turnover In Neuromuscular Junctions Of Parkin Mutants., Kenny Nguyen
The Journal of Purdue Undergraduate Research
The accumulation of dysfunctional or damaged mitochondria in neurons has been linked to the pathogenesis of many neurodegenerative diseases, including Parkinson’s disease. It has been proposed that the Parkinson’s-related proteins PINK1 and Parkin regulate mitochondrial quality control by selectively targeting depolarized mitochondria for autophagic degradation, a process known as mitophagy. The compartmentalization of mitochondrial turnover in neurons still remains unclear, but evidence suggests that mitochondria are locally degraded in the distal axon and perhaps in the neuromuscular junctions (NMJs). To study this, intact Drosophila nervous systems were analyzed in vivo by performing gentle dissections on third instar larvae to expose …

Nonprofit Use Of Social Media: Insights From The Field, Justin Greenleaf Ph.D.
Leadership Faculty Publications
This study focuses on social media use in nonprofit organizations and how nonprofits perceive and strategize about the use of social media platforms. The study was open to any nonprofit organization actively engaged in the use of social media and fifteen different nonprofit organizations were purposefully selected for inclusion in the study. Through interviews with the social media strategists employed by the organizations, the researcher created a foundation for understanding perceptions of effective strategies for social media use in these nonprofits. While participants described a variety of social media platforms, discussion revolved primarily around the use of Facebook and Twitter. …
Ben Domain Protein Elba2 Can Functionally Substitute For Linker Histone H1 In Drosophila In Vivo, Na Xu, Xingwu Lu, Harsh Kavi, Alexander V. Emelyanov, Travis J. Bernardo, Elena Vershilova, Arthur I. Skoultchi, Dmitry V. Fyodorov
Ben Domain Protein Elba2 Can Functionally Substitute For Linker Histone H1 In Drosophila In Vivo, Na Xu, Xingwu Lu, Harsh Kavi, Alexander V. Emelyanov, Travis J. Bernardo, Elena Vershilova, Arthur I. Skoultchi, Dmitry V. Fyodorov
Publications and Research
Metazoan linker histones are essential for development and play crucial roles in organization of chromatin, modification of epigenetic states and regulation of genetic activity. Vertebrates express multiple linker histone H1 isoforms, which may function redundantly. In contrast, H1 isoforms are not present in Dipterans, including D. melanogaster, except for an embryo-specific, distantly related dBigH1. Here we show that Drosophila BEN domain protein Elba2, which is expressed in early embryos and was hypothesized to have insulator-specific functions, can compensate for the loss of H1 in vivo. Although the Elba2 gene is not essential, its mutation causes a disruption of normal internucleosomal …

Phylogeny, Systematics And Biogeography Of Short-Tailed Opossums (Didelphidae: Monodelphis), Silvia E. Pavan
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Short-tailed opossums (genus Monodelphis) comprise the most species-rich genus of New World marsupials, with 25 currently recognized species. Monodelphis comprise small, terrestrial species collectively widespread in South America, which makes the group potentially informative about biogeographic processes that have shaped the continental fauna. The genus exhibits striking variation in several phenotypic characters, notably pelage coloration, behavior, and reproductive strategies. This diversity is unique among Neotropical marsupials, and makes the group particularly interesting to investigate the evolution and the adaptive significance of phenotypic trait variation. Despite this potential, missing knowledge on phylogeny and basic taxonomy precludes broader studies on evolution …
Publication In Martial's Time And The Publication Of His Works, Jack Kaufmann
Publication In Martial's Time And The Publication Of His Works, Jack Kaufmann
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
I have attempted in this thesis to broadly discuss the nature of literary publication in classical times, characterized by (a) the lack of printing presses or any other means to make multiple copies of a work except by writing out each copy by hand, and (b) the lack of any copyright or other protection of a writer’s work. These factors led to a very different concept of publishing than our modern one. I have then focused on the epigrams of Martial (ca. 40 A.D. – 103 A.D.) in particular, because (a) his epigrams contain a wealth of information relating to …
Talk Shows And Language Attitudes: A Sociolinguistic Investigation Of Language Attitudes Towards Taiwan Mandarin Among Chinese Mainlanders, Chun-Yi Peng
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation looks at the effects of media exposure and language ideologies on Mandarin speakers’ acceptability judgments. Although there is a long-standing tradition against citing media exposure as a source of language variation, I show that 1) media exposure to a non-local perceptually salient variant can make people more likely to rate non-local linguistic features as grammatically acceptable, and 2) media exposure shapes people’s language attitudes—a new alignment of attitudes is emerging among the millennials on the mainland.
Data were collected through an online survey consisting of grammaticality judgments, matched-guise tasks, open-ended attitudinal questions, and demographic questions. The data show …

This project seeks to investigate the development of the Habermasian public sphere in Columbia County, NY, during the rapid expansion of railway transportation from the middle- to the late-19th century, by gathering and presenting information about the proliferation of railway stations and select public institutions between 1840 and 1900. In charting the spread of area libraries, newspapers, post offices, and churches during this period, this project utilizes and combines methodological approaches taken by a number of landmark recent studies in historical geography and digital history; in so doing, it prototypes the research and pedagogical value and promise of incorporating …
Educational Histories Of Newcomer Immigrant Youth: From Countries Of Origin To The United States, Joanna Yip
Educational Histories Of Newcomer Immigrant Youth: From Countries Of Origin To The United States, Joanna Yip
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation details the educational histories and linguistic portraits of newcomer immigrant youth in their countries of origin, and provided accounts of their academic trajectories after arrival in the United States. The data provide evidence of poor quality instruction, particularly in literacy, and educational environments in low-income sending countries. The study shows that prior schooling experiences in the country of origin have an impact on school readiness, the degree to which immigrant youth are prepared for education in secondary classrooms in the U.S. The dissertation also provides an analysis of how pre-migration education interacts with educational performance after immigration, leading …
Teacher Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Character Building Initiatives At An Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School, Adeola A. Alexander
Teacher Perceptions Of The Effectiveness Of Character Building Initiatives At An Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School, Adeola A. Alexander
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
This dissertation uses as its conceptual foundation the research on teacher beliefs to examine how teachers at an Expeditionary Learning School in Brooklyn, New York perceive the character building initiatives at their school. Using thematic case study methodology, the study found that teachers believed that character education is important and should be taught. Not only should character education be taught in schools, but the teachers believed that schools should be intentional about the teaching and development of student character. Teachers also believed that teachers are capable and should be allowed to spearhead the school initiatives intended to develop character. According …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
The worldwide prevalence of obesity, particularly in developed nations, has become an epidemic in recent decades and the trend is continuing to rise. Moreover, the prevalence of obesity in children and adolescents is rising at an alarming rate. Obesity is associated with an increased risk of metabolic disorders including heart disease, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. Therefore it is no surprise that lipid-related metabolic disorders have become a significant burden to our healthcare system. In recent years, the conserved cellular recycling process of autophagy has been linked to several lipid-related metabolic disorders, including insulin resistance, …

Feralisation Targets Different Genomic Loci To Domestication In The Chicken, M. Johnsson, Eben Gering, P. Willis, S. Lopez, L. Van Dorp, G. Hellenthal, R. Henriksen, U. Friberg, D. Wright
Biology Faculty Articles
Feralisation occurs when a domestic population recolonizes the wild, escaping its previous restricted environment, and has been considered as the reverse of domestication. We have previously shown that Kauai Island's feral chickens are a highly variable and admixed population. Here we map selective sweeps in feral Kauai chickens using whole-genome sequencing. The detected sweeps were mostly unique to feralisation and distinct to those selected for during domestication. To ascribe potential phenotypic functions to these genes we utilize a laboratory-controlled equivalent to the Kauai population—an advanced intercross between Red Junglefowl and domestic layer birds that has been used previously for both …

Presence, Absence, And Roosting Ecology Of The Southeastern Myotis And Rafinesque's Big-Eared Bat In The Cache River National Wildlife Refuge, Samuel Andrew Schratz
Student Theses and Dissertations
Four bat species, 2 of special concern, the southeastern myotis (Myotis austroriparius), and Rafinesque’s big-eared bat (Corynorhinus rafinesquii) and 2 threatened and endangered species may occur in one of Arkansas’ largest bottomland hardwood forests, the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge. However, inventory of bat species throughout the refuge is lacking and management plans may not be adequate in promoting the conservation of bats. My goal was to inventory the bats of the Cache River National Wildlife Refuge and determine roosting habits of the southeastern myotis and Rafinesque’s big-eared bat. During summers 2014 and 2015, surveys were conducted throughout the refuge. …

Viral Zoonoses That Fly With Bats: A Review, Alfonso Calderon, Camilo Guzman, Jorge Salazar-Bravo, Luiz Tadeu Figueiredo, Salim Mattar, German Arrieta
MANTER: Journal of Parasite Biodiversity
Emerging infectious diseases are a growing threat to human health and a great challenge for global medical attention systems. Governmental agencies in tropical regions with abundant zoonotic pathogens should implement an active vigilance/monitoring model in bat reservoir populations because of their species richness, abundance and dispersal capabilities. Chiropterans represent approximately 20% of all mammal species, the second largest order in terms of number of species after rodents. Importantly, bats constitute natural reservoirs for potential infection of humans of several infectious disease agents such as Coronavirus, Filovirus, Lyssavirus, Paramyxovirus, and Flavivirus. Local disease outbreaks caused by new pathogens can …
Schooling The Market: Venture Philanthropy, Field Building And The Newschools Venture Fund, Gregory E. Tewksbury
Schooling The Market: Venture Philanthropy, Field Building And The Newschools Venture Fund, Gregory E. Tewksbury
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Since the 1980s and the Reagan administration’s report “A Nation at Risk” and with the passage of No Child Left Behind during the George W. Bush Administration, the ground of public education has shifted. Reform efforts previously geared toward improving the system of public education have been superseded by the efforts of venture philanthropies and foundations like Gates, Walton and Broad to remake education into a private market. The power of these institutions politically, socially and economically to reshape the educational landscape inAmericaraises fundamental questions about the role of wealthy elites and their influence on democracy and education.

This thesis will identify how the principle male character in select film narratives transforms from childhood through his adolescence in multiple locations and historical eras. The primary film narratives include Satyajit Ray’s Apu Trilogy: Pather Panchali (1955), Aparajito (1956), and Apur Sansar (1959), François Truffaut’s "Antoine Doinel" cycle: Les Quatre cents coups (1959), Antoine et Colette (1962), Baisers volés (1968), Domicile conjugal (1970), and L’Amour en fuite (1979), and Richard Linklater’s Boyhood (2014). These images of experience/maturation in motion are all intended to exemplify how the boy physically and psychologically changes over an extended period of time. The concept of …
Possible Underlying Mechanisms Of Hyperactivity In Children With Adhd, Nicole Feirsen
Possible Underlying Mechanisms Of Hyperactivity In Children With Adhd, Nicole Feirsen
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Conceptualizations of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) have evolved significantly over the years. Historically, early conceptualizations of ADHD described hyperactivity as the core symptom of the disorder. However, when the third version of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) was published (1980), hyperactivity became a specific qualifier of the disorder and was no longer necessary for a diagnosis. Despite this shift in conceptualization of the disorder, there is an abundance of empirical evidence, both recent and historical, supporting the fact that hyperactivity is an enduring and clinically impairing symptom domain in ADHD. Despite having numerous validated instruments available to …

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
Personal intelligent agents (PIA), such as Apple’s Siri, Google Now, Facebook’s M, and Microsoft’s Cortana, are pervading our lives. These systems are taking the shape of a companion, and acting on our behalf to help us manage our everyday activities. The proliferation of these PIAs is largely due to their wide availability on mobile devices which themselves have become commonly available for billions of people. Our continuous interaction with these PIAs is impacting our sense of self, sense of being human, perception of technology, and relationships with others. The Information Systems (IS) literature on PIAs has been scarce. In this …

The Islamic Law Perspective Of Precautionary Principle On Transboundary Movement Of Living Modified Organisms (Lmos), Sri Wartini
The Islamic Law Perspective Of Precautionary Principle On Transboundary Movement Of Living Modified Organisms (Lmos), Sri Wartini
Jurnal Hukum & Pembangunan
The aim of the research is to examine the Islamic law perspective of precautionary principle on transboundary movement of living modified organisms (hereinafter LMOs) based on maslahah mursalah (public interest) and sadd al-dhara’i (blocking the means). The international trade of LMOs may affect the human health and environment in the importing states. Most of the importing states are Muslim states. Thus, it is important to examine the transboundary movement of LMOs from the Islamic law perspective. In order to elaborate on the issue, the reseach addresses the following questions: First, how is the relationship between man and nature (khalīfahand nature)? …
