Onondaga County Animal Response Team (Oncart): Development & Application, Chris P. Graber

Capstone Projects 2015-Present

In an effort to better address animal welfare issues, the Onondaga County Department of Emergency Management (OCDEM) initiated the development of an all-volunteer County Animal Response Team (OnCART). • An annex to Onondaga County’s Comprehensive Emergency Management Plan (CEMP) and OnCART Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) were developed in collaboration with state, county, and local stakeholders. These emergency plans define OnCART’s authority, capabilities and limitations, roles and responsibilities, and command structure. • Following a study of existing CARTs and animal disaster incidents throughout the U.S., a public education and outreach initiative was also initiated. Training modules for OnCART members, first responders …

Arkansas Water Resources Center Technical Reports

The intent of this publication of the Arkansas Water Resources Center is to provide a location whereby a final report on water research to a funding agency can be archived. The Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) contracted with University of Arkansas researchers for a multiple year project titled “Database Analysis to Support Nutrient Criteria Development”. This publication covers the first of three phases of that project and has maintained the original format of the report as submitted to TCEQ. This report can be cited either as an AWRC publication (see below) or directly as the final report to TCEQ.

Framing The Future: Imagining The City Through The Lens Of Film, Sofia Zavala Ferreira Oct 2016

Framing The Future: Imagining The City Through The Lens Of Film, Sofia Zavala Ferreira

Architecture Thesis Prep

With a great interest in the relationship between film and architecture, this project establishes its subject matter on the possibilities presented in science fiction cinema and speculative design. By extracting attributes from these that would influence design and architectural concerns, a bridge between the disconnected imagined and real, current and future, can be created through the creation of a speculative scenario and a narrative. It seeks to utilize cinematic design and storytelling conventions to successfully convey the desired atmosphere, architectural realities, and life conditions of a fictional city. By utilizing advanced digital techniques often used in cinema itself, including but …

The Risks Of Revolution: Ethical Dilemmas In 3d Printing From A Us Perspective, Erica L. Neely Oct 2016

The Risks Of Revolution: Ethical Dilemmas In 3d Printing From A Us Perspective, Erica L. Neely

Philosophy and Religion Faculty Scholarship

Additive manufacturing has spread widely over the past decade, especially with the availability of home 3D printers. In the future, many items may be manufactured at home, which raises two ethical issues. First, there are questions of safety. Our current safety regulations depend on centralized manufacturing assumptions they will be difficult to enforce on this new model of manufacturing. Using current US law as an example, I argue that consumers are not capable of fully assessing all relevant risks and thus continue to require protection any regulation will likely apply to plans, however, not physical objects. Second, there are intellectual …

Mechanisms Of Comorbidities Associated With The Metabolic Syndrome: Insights From The Jcr:La-Cp Corpulent Rat Strain, Abdoulaye Diane, W David Pierce, Sandra Kelly, Sharon Sokolik, Rebecca Hutcheson, Petra Rocic, Spencer Proctor

NYMC Faculty Publications

Obesity and its metabolic complications have emerged as the epidemic of the new millennia. The use of obese rodent models continues to be a productive component of efforts to understand the concomitant metabolic complications of this disease. In 1978, the JCR:LA-cp rat model was developed with an autosomal recessive corpulent (cp) trait resulting from a premature stop codon in the extracellular domain of the leptin receptor. Rats that are heterozygous for the cp trait are lean-prone, while those that are homozygous (cp/cp) spontaneously display the pathophysiology of obesity as well as a metabolic syndrome (MetS)-like phenotype. Over the years, there …

The Ep3 Receptor Regulates Water Excretion In Response To High Salt Intake, Shoujin Hao, Annmarie Dellipizzi, Mariana Quiroz-Munoz, Houli Jiang, Nicholas R. Ferreri Oct 2016

The Ep3 Receptor Regulates Water Excretion In Response To High Salt Intake, Shoujin Hao, Annmarie Dellipizzi, Mariana Quiroz-Munoz, Houli Jiang, Nicholas R. Ferreri

NYMC Faculty Publications

The mechanisms by which prostanoids contribute to the maintenance of whole body water homeostasis are complex and not fully understood. The present study demonstrates that an EP3-dependent feedback mechanism contributes to the regulation of water homeostasis under high-salt conditions. Rats on a normal diet and tap water were placed in metabolic cages and given either sulprostone (20 μg·kg·day) or vehicle for 3 days to activate EP3 receptors in the thick ascending limb (TAL). Treatment was continued for another 3 days in rats given either 1% NaCl in the drinking water or tap water. Sulprostone decreased expression of cyclooxygenase 2 (COX-2) …

Changes In Neurotrophic Factors Of Adult Rat Laryngeal Muscles During Nerve Regeneration, Ignacio Hernandez-Morato, Sansar Sharma, Michael J. Pitman Oct 2016

Changes In Neurotrophic Factors Of Adult Rat Laryngeal Muscles During Nerve Regeneration, Ignacio Hernandez-Morato, Sansar Sharma, Michael J. Pitman

NYMC Faculty Publications

Injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) leads to the loss of ipsilateral laryngeal fold movement, with dysphonia, and occasionally dysphagia. Functional movement of the vocal folds is never restored due to misrouting of regenerating axons to agonist and antagonist laryngeal muscles. Changes of neurotrophic factor expression within denervated muscles occur after nerve injury and may influence nerve regeneration, axon guidance and muscle reinnervation. This study investigates the expression of certain neurotrophic factors in the laryngeal muscles during the course of axonal regeneration using RT-PCR. The timing of neurotrophic factor expression was correlated to the reinnervation of the laryngeal muscles …

Making It Work: Supporting Contemporary Artists In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Michael Curran Oct 2016

Making It Work: Supporting Contemporary Artists In Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia, Michael Curran

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Following the country’s political transition to democracy in the 1990s, a generation of Mongolian artists constructed an art movement rooted in the issues of the new society: transitional national identity, corrupt political and economic systems, and a growingly complex relationship with nature. The liberalization of the economy, however, hasn’t nurtured sustainable creative resources or helped artists reach domestic or international markets, pressuring them to find alternative ways to create livelihoods out of their craft. This study considers how emerging multidisciplinary artists sustain themselves through both formal and informal means, and the motivations behind their creative lifestyles.

Central to the study …

The China Puzzle: Theory And Evidence On The Behavior Of Chinese Exports During The 2008-2009 Global Financial Crisis, Hang-Wei Hao Oct 2016

The China Puzzle: Theory And Evidence On The Behavior Of Chinese Exports During The 2008-2009 Global Financial Crisis, Hang-Wei Hao

Economics Faculty Publications

Many studies link the recent collapse in trade during the 2008-09 financial crisis to a decrease in the demand for durable and investment goods in crisis-hit countries. Thus, a remarkable feature of the recent collapse in international trade is that China’s export sectors – for which the crisis-hit U.S. and Europe are the primary destinations – appear much less affected than their counterparts in other exporting countries. This paper explains the puzzle by documenting a new stylized fact: China’s processing exports fell much less than ordinary trade during the 2008-09 financial crisis, even conditioning on industry and demand in the …

Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas Oct 2016

Realizing Urban Water Pollution Impact In Melbourne, Australia Through Painting, Gregory Suplinskas

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Throughout the month of November 2016, I undertook a creative environmental art project in Melbourne, Australia. I chose to create a water-soluble oil painting (dimensions 3 ft. x 4 ft.) that represents water pollution problems in the city of Melbourne, particularly in Port Phillip Bay. These problems include toxic stormwater runoff, plastics pollution and plastic nurdles, as well as nutrient buildup and algal overgrowth. The painting includes messages regarding sustainability; sustainable action limits the use of our natural resources so that humans can preserve the environment for future generations rather than degrade it. In the painting, I combine conceptual and …

Beyond What Is Heard: A Documentary Film About Acoustic Ecology As Sustainability Activism, Jesse Rolfe Oct 2016

Beyond What Is Heard: A Documentary Film About Acoustic Ecology As Sustainability Activism, Jesse Rolfe

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

Acoustic ecology is an interdisciplinary field that studies the relationship between sounds, sound sources, and environment they exist within. From an environmental perspective, this involves a holistic consideration of ecosystems, and how the various organisms within that ecosystem, including humans, impact and interact with each other through sound. Biosphere Soundscapes, an international, interdisciplinary project directed by Australian acoustic ecologist Dr. Leah Barclay, operates to engage communities within UNESCO Biosphere Reserves through acoustic-ecological concepts, monitoring, and techniques. In November 2016, I undertook the process of creating a short documentary film entitled Beyond What is Heard, which aimed to explore how the …

Developing Nations And Disadvantaged Populations: How The 2009 H1n1 Influenza Pandemic Exacerbated Disparities And Inequities, Rebecca Lebeaux Oct 2016

Developing Nations And Disadvantaged Populations: How The 2009 H1n1 Influenza Pandemic Exacerbated Disparities And Inequities, Rebecca Lebeaux

Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection

The 2009 H1N1 influenza pandemic, although not as deadly or long lasting as initially projected, demonstrated that the world was and is ill prepared to handle a mass pandemic. As the first pandemic of the twenty-first century, the pandemic revealed global health insecurities and asymmetrical disease burdens for disadvantaged individuals and countries. This paper will analyze why both developing countries and disadvantaged individuals suffered disproportionately from the pandemic. Using the framework of structural violence, this paper will investigate how socioeconomic and political disparities encountered before and during the pandemic caused differential health, societal, political, and economic outcomes. These preexisting disparities …
