Preparation Of Primary Mixed Glial Cultures From Adult Mouse Spinal Cord Tissue, Jennifer T. Malon, Ling Cao
Preparation Of Primary Mixed Glial Cultures From Adult Mouse Spinal Cord Tissue, Jennifer T. Malon, Ling Cao
Biomedical Sciences Faculty Publications
It has been well-accepted that spinal cord glial responses contribute significantly to the development of neuropathic pain. Tremendous information regarding glial activities at the cellular and molecular levels has been obtained through in vitro cell culture systems. The in vitro systems utilized, mainly include primary glia derived from neonatal brain cortical tissue and immortalized cell lines. However, these systems may not reflect the characteristics of spinal cord glial cells in vivo. In order to further investigate the roles of spinal cord glial cells in the development of peripheral nerve injury-induced neuropathic pain using a culture system that better reflects …

Policy On The Application Of Fish Size Limits In Western Australia, Western Australia. Dept. Of Fisheries
Fisheries Management Papers
Fisheries managers can utilise a range of different types of management tools to assist with the sustainable management of fish stocks and to achieve other fisheries management objectives. For commercial fisheries these types of tools may include input controls (e.g. a limit on the number of operators, explicit effort limits and gear restrictions) and output controls (e.g. total allowable catches, individual catch quotas) or spatial and temporal restrictions. Recreational fisheries often have daily bag limits and possession limits as quasi output controls, while seasonal or other temporal closures can operate as input controls and be a component of limiting total …

Fisheries Management Papers
Integrated Fisheries Management (IFM) is an initiative aimed at addressing the issue of how fish resources in Western Australia should be shared between competing users within the broad context of “Ecologically Sustainable Development”, or ESD, so that they can be managed to a sustainable allowable harvest level. The Minister for Fisheries (Minister) established the Integrated Fisheries Management Allocation Advisory Committee (Allocation Committee), under Section 42 of the Fish Resources Management Act 1994 (FRMA), in 2004 to investigate IFM resource allocation issues and make recommendations to him on optimal resource use.

Understanding The Differences Between Neuronal Calcium Sensor Proteins: A Comparison Of Neurocalcin Delta And Hippocalcin, Jeffrey M. Viviano
Understanding The Differences Between Neuronal Calcium Sensor Proteins: A Comparison Of Neurocalcin Delta And Hippocalcin, Jeffrey M. Viviano
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
Many neuronal functions, including learning and memory are driven by changes in intracellular Ca2+concentrations. The Neuronal Calcium Sensor (NCS) family of proteins is responsible for mediating the response to calcium. They are typically comprised of 4 EF hands; of which EF 2, 3, and 4 bind calcium.
Hypothesis: NCS proteins carry out unique, non-overlapping functions, and that specific characteristics of the family can be mapped to precise regions of the proteins.
Results: The effect on the following properties were investigated primarily on two highly similar NCS proteins, Neurocalcin Delta (NCALD) and Hippocalcin (HPCA): (1) Response to calcium was determined through …

Mapping Arctic Tundra Vegetation Communities Using Field Spectroscopy And Multispectral Satellite Data In North Alaska, Usa, Scott J. Davidson, Maria J. Santos, Victoria L. Sloan, Jennifer D. Watts, Gareth K. Phoenix, Walter C. Oechel, Donatella Zona
Numerical Terradynamic Simulation Group Publications
The Arctic is currently undergoing intense changes in climate; vegetation composition and productivity are expected to respond to such changes. To understand the impacts of climate change on the function of Arctic tundra ecosystems within the global carbon cycle, it is crucial to improve the understanding of vegetation distribution and heterogeneity at multiple scales. Information detailing the fine-scale spatial distribution of tundra communities provided by high resolution vegetation mapping, is needed to understand the relative contributions of and relationships between single vegetation community measurements of greenhouse gas fluxes (e.g., ~1 m chamber flux) and those encompassing multiple vegetation communities (e.g., …

Positive Allosteric Modulator Of Gabab Receptor Alters Behavioral Effects But Not Afterdischarge Progression Induced By Partial Hippocampal Kindling., L Stan Leung, Miao Jin, Liangwei Chu, Jingyi Ma
Physiology and Pharmacology Publications
Hippocampal seizures decreased the function of GABAB receptors, which may further increase seizure susceptibility and contribute to development of schizophrenia-like behaviors. Recent literature indicates that GABAB receptor agonist may normalize schizophrenia-like behaviors and prevent drug-induced behavioral sensitization. We hypothesized that positive modulation of GABAB receptor function during seizure induction will reduce seizure-induced schizophrenia-like behaviors. Using a partial hippocampal kindling model, afterdischarges were induced after injection of saline or dimethyl sulfoxide (vehicle-kindled rats), or a GABAB receptor positive allosteric modulator CGP7930, at 1 mg/kg i.p. (CGP1-kindled) or 5 mg/kg i.p. (CGP5-kindled). The increase in the primary afterdischarge duration during kindling was …

Thermal performance curves (TPCs), which quantify how an ectotherm's body temperature (Tb ) affects its performance or fitness, are often used in an attempt to predict organismal responses to climate change. Here, we examine the key - but often biologically unreasonable - assumptions underlying this approach; for example, that physiology and thermal regimes are invariant over ontogeny, space and time, and also that TPCs are independent of previously experienced Tb. We show how a critical consideration of these assumptions can lead to biologically useful hypotheses and experimental designs. For example, rather than assuming that TPCs are fixed during ontogeny, one …

The Rodent Parvovirus H-1 And Its Potential In Combination With Tien Hsien Liquid As A Treatment For Breast Cancer, Hayley I. Spires
Selected Honors Theses
Breast cancer is responsible for 12% of cancer diagnoses each year, and it is the leading cause of cancer-related mortality in women worldwide. Current treatments have provided some success in combatting the disease but are not considered a final solution. The framework for how researchers approach cancer has continued to change, and this includes the introduction of oncolytic viruses as novel therapeutics for cancer. The rodent parvovirus H-1 has shown strong potential in clinical and subclinical trials, but its S phase dependency limits its usefulness against cancer stem cell populations. Tien Hsien Liquid is commerically available, nontoxic, and has shown …

The Digital “Lure”: Small Businesses And Pokémon Go, Jordan Frith
The Digital “Lure”: Small Businesses And Pokémon Go, Jordan Frith
Publications
Most of the discussion about Pokémon Go has focused on the end-user and the playful nature of the game. Experts have mentioned the game’s commercialism, but they have done so mostly by talking about the data collection practices of the app developers. This commentary piece takes a different approach by examining how businesses have used Pokémon Go’s “lures” to attract foot traffic. The main goal of the article is to show how the ludic, digital wayfaring of location-based games can be used by individual places to attract players. While the focus is on business owners, I will also address …

Individual susceptibility to HIV is heterogeneous, but the biological mechanisms explaining differences are incompletely understood. We hypothesized that penile inflammation may increase HIV susceptibility in men by recruiting permissive CD4 T cells, and that male circumcision may decrease HIV susceptibility in part by reducing genital inflammation. We used multi-array technology to measure levels of seven cytokines in coronal sulcus (penile) swabs collected longitudinally from initially uncircumcised men enrolled in a randomized trial of circumcision in Rakai, Uganda. Coronal sulcus cytokine levels were compared between men who acquired HIV and controls who remained seronegative. Cytokines were also compared within men before …

The relationship between traditional metrics of research impact (e.g., number of citations) and alternative metrics (altmetrics) such as Twitter activity are of great interest, but remain imprecisely quantified. We used generalized linear mixed modeling to estimate the relative effects of Twitter activity, journal impact factor, and time since publication on Web of Science citation rates of 1,599 primary research articles from 20 ecology journals published from 2012-2014. We found a strong positive relationship between Twitter activity (i.e., the number of unique tweets about an article) and number of citations. Twitter activity was a more important predictor of citation rates than …

With their essential role in inner ear function, stereocilia of sensory hair cells demonstrate the importance of cellular actin protrusions. Actin packing in stereocilia is mediated by cross-linkers of the plastin, fascin, and espin families. Although mice lacking espin (ESPN) have no vestibular or auditory function, we found that mice that either lacked plastin 1 (PLS1) or had nonfunctional fascin 2 (FSCN2) had reduced inner ear function, with double-mutant mice most strongly affected. Targeted mass spectrometry indicated that PLS1 was the most abundant cross-linker in vestibular stereocilia and the second most abundant protein overall; ESPN only accounted for ∼15% of …

Private Complements To Public Governance, Emily S. Bremer
Private Complements To Public Governance, Emily S. Bremer
Missouri Law Review
This Article suggests that private governance offers an attractive alternative or complement to the administrative state. It is commonly assumed that without administrative agencies, there would be no regulation. As a foundational matter, this Article challenges the notion that there are only two, mutually exclusive options: governmental regulation or no regulation all. Although it is perfectly natural for public law scholars to focus primarily on regulation through government institutions and programs, much regulation is in fact accomplished via mechanisms outside the administrative state.4 At least in some circumstances, it is not only possible but may even be preferable to use …
