Suspended Sediment And Nutrient Concentrations And Loads In Two Irish Rivers, Sean T. Harrington
Suspended Sediment And Nutrient Concentrations And Loads In Two Irish Rivers, Sean T. Harrington
Theses
This thesis presents the results of new and original research on suspended sediment (SS) and nutrient concentrations and loads on the Rivers Bandon and Owenabue in the south of Ireland. It addresses the knowledge gap in SS and nutrient concentration data and in particular SS load/yield estimation methods. A comprehensive database of SS and nutrient concentrations has been established. An investigation into the relationship between water discharge and sediment and nutrient transport is presented and new original relationships between turbidity and suspended sediment concentration (SSC) and nutrients are developed. Turbidity-based suspended sediment loads (SSL) are estimated from the continuous turbidity …

Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri
Magnetic Field Non-Uniformity Challenges In Neutron Electric Dipole Moment Experiments, Nima Nouri
Theses and Dissertations--Physics and Astronomy
A new neutron Electric Dipole Moment (nEDM) experiment was proposed to be commissioned at the Fundamental Neutron Physics Beamline at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) of the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL). The underlying theme of this experiment (first conceived by Golub and Lamoreaux in 1994) is the search for new physics beyond the Standard Model of particle physics. The discovery of a non-zero nEDM would be of revolutionary importance to physics, with the discovery of such providing for evidence for new-beyond-the-Standard-Model physics required for a resolution to the unresolved puzzle of why the universe is dominated by matter, as …
A Reflection Of Maya Representation, Distribution, And Interaction: Ceramic Figurines From The Late Classic Site Of Cancuén, Petén Department, Guatemala, Erin L. Sears
Theses and Dissertations--Anthropology
This project explores intersecting spheres of technological, stylistic and contextually patterned relationships expressed by ceramic figurines associated with the major Maya polity Cancuén. Cancuén is situated by assessing its external contacts by reference to figurines recovered from several Late Classic settlements, and hieroglyphic texts recorded as interacting polities. By focusing on these sites along connecting waterways, I attempt to discern directions of influence and change with regard to figurine use patterns relative to those seen in other ceramic representations. Traditional archaeological criteria were used to obtain excavated figurines at specific sites. Stylistic and technological information are augmented through an intensive …
Horticultural Technique For Rearing And Redistribution Of The Sessile Biological Control Agent, Rhizaspidiotus Donacis On Its Host Plant, Arundo Donax, Joseph M. Villarreal, John A. Goolsby, Ann T. Vacek, Adalberto A. Perez De Leon, Alexis Racelis
Horticultural Technique For Rearing And Redistribution Of The Sessile Biological Control Agent, Rhizaspidiotus Donacis On Its Host Plant, Arundo Donax, Joseph M. Villarreal, John A. Goolsby, Ann T. Vacek, Adalberto A. Perez De Leon, Alexis Racelis
School of Integrative Biological & Chemical Sciences (Formerly Dept. of Biology)
Arundo donax, giant reed is an invasive weed in the riparian habitats of the Rio Grande Basin. A biological control program using specialist insects from the native range in Mediterranean Europe, including the arundo scale, Rhi-zaspidiotus donacis has been implemented. The arundo scale is a sessile insect that spends most of its life cycle affixed to its host plant, thus creating challenges for its rearing and redistribution to field sites. A horticultural technique was developed which allowed for rearing of the scale on small, potted A. donax microplants, which could later be transplanted to field sites. Female scale reach maturity …
Going Public: How The Government Assumed The Authority To Prosecute In The Southern United States, Jason Twede
Going Public: How The Government Assumed The Authority To Prosecute In The Southern United States, Jason Twede
Theses and Dissertations
This research explores factors that may have influenced the transition from private prosecution to public prosecution in Georgia during the late-eighteenth century—a transition that eventually happened in every jurisdiction in the United States. There are numerous people, both inside and outside academia, who are calling for a change to the current system of prosecution in the United States. One possible change that is being advocated is a return to a system of private prosecution. Understanding the reasons the system changed from a system of private prosecution in the first instance is important when determining whether such a return is appropriate. …
Roles Of Nitric Oxide On Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Cancer Stem Cell Phenotypes In Anoikis-Resistant Lung Cancer Cells, Phattrakorn Powan
Roles Of Nitric Oxide On Epithelial To Mesenchymal Transition And Cancer Stem Cell Phenotypes In Anoikis-Resistant Lung Cancer Cells, Phattrakorn Powan
Chulalongkorn University Theses and Dissertations (Chula ETD)
The interconversion between epithelial and mesenchymal is proposed to be a key machinery responsible for metastasis-related deaths. Likewise, cancer stem cells (CSCs) have been proposed to be a key driver of tumor metastasis. The gaseous biological mediator nitric oxide (NO) is also reported to mediate metastasis. However, the linkage between the three events and their control mechanisms under detachment condition are unclear. Since an increase of E-cadherin was frequently found in mesenchymal to epithelial transition (MET) process, we used anoikis resistance H460 lung cancer cells (AR_H460) and a 3D tumor spheroid assay and other CSC-indicating assays to investigate the role …

Building Connections, Collaboration, And Community For Differently-And Typically-Able Students In A Middle School Library In The United States, Karen W. Gavigan, Clayton A. Copeland
Faculty Publications
Data from around the world offer compelling evidence regarding the impact that school librarians and library programs have on student achievement. Research investigating inclusive library programming, or programming serving both typically-able and differently-able students, however, is extremely limited. This case study examined inclusive library programming in a rural middle school library in the southeastern United States. Best practices and inclusion in the school library served as the axis from which a school culture of inclusion and valuing differences emanates. Findings from this study offer guidance for educators and librarians serving multiple grade levels in both school and public library settings.
Resurgence Of Acropora Corals On Mid Shelf Patch Reefs, Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Central Belize, Jillian J. Keefer
Resurgence Of Acropora Corals On Mid Shelf Patch Reefs, Southwater Caye Marine Reserve, Central Belize, Jillian J. Keefer
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Projects
Acropora cervicornis (staghorn) and Acropora palmata (elkhorn) are ecologically important corals that grow quickly and provide topography and refuges for fish and invertebrates. Historically, Acropora was the most abundant coral in shallow patch reef zones in the Caribbean. During the 1980s, white band disease eliminated most Acropora causing a loss in rugosity and an increase of macroalgae on many reefs. Although Acropora remains rare throughout most of the Caribbean, this study documents its partial comeback and possible limiting factors in Southwater Caye Marine Reserve (SWCMR), Central Belize. Patch reefs in the reserve averaged 19% live coral cover with A. palmata …
Imagining U.S. Labor Relations Without Union Security, Ann C. Hodges
Imagining U.S. Labor Relations Without Union Security, Ann C. Hodges
Law Faculty Publications
Attacks on union finances are intensifying. These assaults, which come in various forms, have the potential to jeopardize the current systems of labor relations in the United States in both private and public sectors. This essay analyzes what might happen if the challenges are successful. Unions may shrink further in size or power, or alternatively, respond to new conditions in ways that strengthen them. Removal of union security might prompt legal change such as elimination of the duty of fair representation, elimination of the system of exclusive representation, or permitting the union to charge nonmembers for actual representation. These changes, …
Three Supreme Court “Failures” And A Story Of Supreme Court Success, Corinna Barrett Lain
Three Supreme Court “Failures” And A Story Of Supreme Court Success, Corinna Barrett Lain
Law Faculty Publications
Plessy v. Ferguson. Buck v. Bell. Korematsu v. United States. Together, these three decisions legitimated ‘separate but equal,’ sanctioned the forced sterilization of thousands, and ratified the removal of Japanese Americans from their homes during World War II. By Erwin Chemerinsky’s measure in The Case Against the Supreme Court, all three are Supreme Court failures—cases in which the Court should have protected vulnerable minorities, but failed to do so. Considered in historical context, however, a dramatically different impression of these cases, and the Supreme Court that decided them, emerges. In two of the cases—Plessy and Buck—the Court’s ruling reflected the …
Confirm Myra Selby For The Seventh Circuit, Carl W. Tobias
Confirm Myra Selby For The Seventh Circuit, Carl W. Tobias
Law Faculty Publications
President Barack Obama recently nominated Myra Selby for a vacancy on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit. The nominee is a highly accomplished lawyer who has compiled a distinguished record in both the public and private sectors. For example, Selby was the first African American to earn partnership in a substantial Indianapolis law firm, and both the first African American and the first female Justice to serve on the Indiana Supreme Court. Therefore, concerted White House attempts to confirm her were unsurprising. Nonetheless, with 2016 being a presidential election year, delays have inevitably infused appointments, which have …
The President As Spiritual Leader: Pardons, Punishment, Forgiveness, Mercy, And Justice, Henry L. Chambers Jr.
The President As Spiritual Leader: Pardons, Punishment, Forgiveness, Mercy, And Justice, Henry L. Chambers Jr.
Law Faculty Publications
The Constitution of the United States empowers the president of the United States to curtail or eliminate punishment for actual or possible federal criminal wrongdoing by issuing pardons. As the quotes that begin this chapter suggest, the nature of a presidential pardon is subject to dispute. A pardon can be thought to be an act of grace or an extension of the president's executive power to administer the criminal justice system, or something in between. This chapter does not resolve the issue, but considers the nature of the pardon power while considering whether or how the president can or should …
Age Related Decline In Female Lar Gibbon Great Call Performance Suggests That Call Features Correlate With Physical Condition, Thomas A. Terleph, S. Malaivijitnond, Ulrich H. Reichard
Age Related Decline In Female Lar Gibbon Great Call Performance Suggests That Call Features Correlate With Physical Condition, Thomas A. Terleph, S. Malaivijitnond, Ulrich H. Reichard

Background
White-handed gibbons (Hylobates lar) are small Asian apes known for living in stable territories and producing loud, elaborate vocalizations (songs), often in well-coordinated male/female duets. The female great call, the most conspicuous phrase of the repertoire, has been hypothesized to function in intra-sexual territorial defense. We therefore predicted that characteristics of the great call would correlate with a caller’s physical condition, and thus might honestly reflect resource holding potential (RHP). Because measurement of RHP is virtually impossible for wild animals, we used age as a proxy, hypothesizing that great call climaxes are difficult to produce and maintain …

War Torts: Accountability For Autonomous Weapons, Rebecca Crootof
War Torts: Accountability For Autonomous Weapons, Rebecca Crootof
Law Faculty Publications
Unlike conventional weapons or remotely operated drones, autonomous weapon systems can independently select and engage targets. As a result, they may take actions that look like war crimes—the sinking of a cruise ship, the destruction of a village, the downing of a passenger jet—without any individual acting intentionally or recklessly. Absent such willful action, no one can be held criminally liable under existing international law.
Criminal law aims to prohibit certain actions, and individual criminal liability allows for the evaluation of whether someone is guilty of a moral wrong. Given that a successful ban on autonomous weapon systems is unlikely …

Virginia Practice Series: Jury Instructions, Ronald J. Bacigal, Margaret Ivey Bacigal
Law Faculty Publications
Virginia Practice Series-Jury Instructions is a continuation and update of previous editions, which won widespread approval among the bench and bar for almost 40 years.
As in the past, this book is primarily confined to the most common areas of jury trial work, torts and criminal law. Where possible, the language of the instructions is taken directly from reported cases or case records. Where this is not possible, we have set out instructions that should meet both the general rules regarding the form of instructions and the specific substantive legal rules. In the latter cases, close attention has been paid …

Technique For: Determination Of Insect Prey Selection By Insectivorous Bats, Merrill Tawse
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
Utilizing Fecal Pellet Analysis to Determine Prey Selection by Insectivorous Bats: For my Graduate Project I examined culled exoskeleton parts from bat fecal pellets (guano) to determine identifications of the insects preyed upon by a group of bats to their order and often family levels. Culled insect parts were permanently fixed on microscope slides and viewed under a dissection microscope to determine identifications and to quantify the percentage composition that they represented in the bat’s diet. Comparisons were made of prey selected by the different bat species that were foraging at the same location and at the same time. Comparisons …

Entomology 101: Introduction To Entomology, Brian Kelly
Department of Entomology: Distance Master of Science Projects
The goal of this particular project is to create an entry-level curriculum for Entomology to present to the local university / community college. My Bachelor’s Degree was obtained from the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs (UCCS). The higher institutions of learning in the city of Colorado Springs (to include Pikes Peak Community College, or PPCC, as well) lack any courses relating to Entomology. UCCS has a strong presence in the city and is growing by leaps and bounds, currently enrolling about 13,000 students and expanding its degree programs. PPCC has several campuses around town, and offers many elective courses …

Dirty Laws: A Critique Of The Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014 And Section 63 Of The Criminal Justice And Immigration Act 2008, Daniel Haley
Cardozo Journal of Equal Rights & Social Justice
The United Kingdom's recently enacted anti-pornography laws, the Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014 and section 63 of the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008, are inconsistent with the European Convention on Human Rights, United Kingdom case law, and United Kingdom public policy. The Audiovisual Media Services Regulations 2014, which bans the sale of a wide array of domestically produced pornography, and the Criminal Justice and Immigration Act 2008, which criminalizes the possession of "extreme pornography, " are among the most restrictive anti-pornography laws in the democratic world. These laws were passed in response to the rise of the Internet, which …
