My Lady Jane, Aylea Stephens Nov 2016

My Lady Jane, Aylea Stephens

Children's Book and Media Review

Lady Jane Grey didn’t have a happy ending in real life, but the narrators in this book are determined to give her a better story. Her cousin, King Edward, has decreed that she should marry a stranger so that her child can be their heir to the throne instead of his sister Mary who is bloodthirsty towards the group of people who have the ability to turn into animals. Shortly after Jane marries Lord Gifford (or G, as he prefers to be called) and discovers that her husband spends most of his time as a horse, she finds out that …

Starships And Enterprise: Private Spaceflight Companies' Property Rights And The U.S. Commercial Space Launch Competitiveness Act, Stephen Dimaria

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note utilizes SLCA as a focal point to discuss the potential of domestic regulation that grants private companies property rights in harvested outer space resources and how, if at all, these rights can exist within the boundaries of current international obligations. First, it outlines current international obligations in space law, delving into the treaties governing space law and analagous obligations in Antarctica and the deep sea. Second, this Note discusses how SLCA meets those guidelines and where it falls short. This Part draws on the Roman law principles of res nullius and res communis, the supporting sections …

USU Uintah Basin Faculty Publications

The atmosphere is an important reservoir for mercury pollution, and understanding of oxidation processes is essential to elucidating the fate of atmospheric mercury. Several recent studies have shown that a low bias exists in a widely applied method for atmospheric oxidized mercury measurements. We developed an automated, permeation tube-based calibrator for elemental and oxidized mercury, and we integrated this calibrator with atmospheric mercury instrumentation (Tekran 2537/1130/1135 speciation systems) in Reno, Nevada and at Mauna Loa Observatory, Hawaii, U.S.A. While the calibrator has limitations, it was able to routinely inject stable amounts of HgCl2 and HgBr2 into atmospheric mercury measurement systems …

ESI Publications

Objectives—Growth standards and references currently used to assess population and individual health are derived primarily from urban populations, including few individuals from indigenous or subsistence groups. Given environmental and genetic differences, growth may vary in these populations. Thus, there is a need to assess whether international standards are appropriate for all populations, and to produce population specific references if growth differs. Here we present and assess growth references for the Tsimane, an indigenous population of Bolivian forager-horticulturalists.

Methods—Mixed cross-sectional/longitudinal anthropometrics (9,614 individuals; 30,118 observations; ages 0–29 years) were used to generate centile curves and Lambda-Mu-Sigma (LMS) tables for …

Localization And Distribution Of Primary Cilia In The Adult Mouse Heart, Ali Zarban, Hannah C. Saternos, Andrea L. Kalinoski, Lijun Liu, Surya M. Nauli, Wissam A. Aboualaiwi

Pharmacy Faculty Articles and Research

Although primary cilia have been shown to play crucial roles in the development of embryonic mouse heart, their presence and function in adult mouse heart remains controversial. In this study, the presence of primary cilia in adult mouse heart was investigated. The presence of primary cilia was initially demonstrated in the surface of cardiac cells of mouse hearts from both young and adult mice by immunostaining with acetylated α-tubulin, a ciliary structural marker. The presence of cardiac primary cilia in 1-, 3-, 6- and 12-month old mice was further confirmed by staining heart tissues with an antibody against pericentrin, a …

Most physiological processes are sensitive to pH (i.e., hydrogen ion activity) and regulation of pH within tissues and body fluids represents a fundamental homeostatic process in living organisms. At the organismal level, acid-base balance is achieved by fast respiratory modulations of the partial pressure of CO2 in combination with slower transepithelial ion movements to accommodate excretion and retention of bicarbonate and protons in response to acid-base disturbances. At the cellular and subcellular levels, acid-base balance is achieved by ion exchange.

Assessment Of Motivational Cognitions In Diabetes Self-Care: The Motivation Thought Frequency Scales For Glucose Testing, Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Sophie C. Parham, David Kavanagh, C Gericke, N King, Jon May, Jackie Andrade Nov 2016

Assessment Of Motivational Cognitions In Diabetes Self-Care: The Motivation Thought Frequency Scales For Glucose Testing, Physical Activity And Healthy Eating, Sophie C. Parham, David Kavanagh, C Gericke, N King, Jon May, Jackie Andrade

School of Psychology

PurposeThere is a need for improved measurement of motivation for diabetes self-care. The Elaborated Intrusion Theory of Desire offers a coherent framework for understanding and identifying the cognitive-affective events that constitute the subjective experience of motivation and may therefore inform the development of such an instrument. Recent research has shown the resultant Motivation Thought Frequency scale (MTF) to have a stable factor structure (Intensity, Incentives Imagery, Self-Efficacy Imagery, Availability) when applied to physical activity, excessive snacking or alcohol use in the general population. The current study aimed to confirm the four-factor structure of the MTF for glucose testing, physical activity …

Psychology Faculty Research

It has been hypothesized that the nicotinic acetylcholine receptors (nAChRs) play important roles in nicotine dependence (ND) and influence the number of cigarettes smoked per day (CPD) in smokers. We compiled the associations between nicotinic cholinergic receptor genes (CHRNs) and ND/CPD that were replicated across different studies, reviewed the expression of these risk genes in human/mouse brains, and verified their expression using independent samples of both human and mouse brains. The potential functions of the replicated risk variants were examined using cis-eQTL analysis or predicted using a series of bioinformatics analyses. We found replicated and significant associations for ND/CPD at …

Muscle Memory And The Local Concentration Of Capital Punishment, Lee Kovarsky Nov 2016

Muscle Memory And The Local Concentration Of Capital Punishment, Lee Kovarsky

Duke Law Journal

The modern death penalty is not just concentrating in a handful of practicing states; it is disappearing in all but a few capitally active localities. Capital-punishment concentration, however, still surfaces more as the subject of casual observation than as the object of sophisticated academic inquiry. Normative and doctrinal analyses of the phenomenon are virtually nonexistent, in part because the current ability to measure and report concentration is so limited.

This Article is the first attempt to measure capital-punishment concentration rigorously, by combining different sources of county-level data and by borrowing quantitative tools that economists use to study market competition. The …

In The Hands Of The Few: The At&T-Time Warner Merger, Rachel Robinson-Greene Nov 2016

In The Hands Of The Few: The At&T-Time Warner Merger, Rachel Robinson-Greene

Languages, Philosophy, and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

On October 22nd, telecommunication company AT&T and media conglomerate Time Warner, parent company of major networks like CNN and HBO, announced that they were merging. AT&T acquired Time Warner in an 85.4 billion dollar deal. Deals such as these may well be the wave of the future. Companies like Time Warner produce the content that viewers watch, and AT&T distributes it. The marriage of the two companies allows production and distribution to take place in innovative new ways. As the trend toward streaming entertainment continues, AT&T can find new ways to provide customers with convenient options to access Time Warner’s …
