The Pilbara RBG is a not for profit association formed under the Associations Incorporation Act 2015, providing declared pest control programs for land managers, particularly in the pastoral zone. The associations’ primary purpose is the control of declared pests using funding from Declared Pest Rates paid by landholders on pastoral stations. These Declared Pest Rates funds are matched dollar for dollar by the WA Government to reflect the public benefit of controlling declared pest animals and weeds. The association is formally recognised by the Hon Minister for Agriculture and Food as a recognised biosecurity group (RBG).
Population Genetic Structure Of Necturus Maculosus In Central And Eastern Kentucky, Mason Owen Murphy
Population Genetic Structure Of Necturus Maculosus In Central And Eastern Kentucky, Mason Owen Murphy
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
Population structure is influenced by extrinsic factors, such as landscape architecture and dispersal barriers. Lotic network architecture is known to constrain ecological, demographic and evolutionary processes, including population genetic structure. I assessed the population structure of a widespread aquatic salamander, Necturus maculosus, across three river basins in central and eastern Kentucky. I examined the role of network architecture, anthropogenic barriers, and spatial scale on patterns of population structure. I also provided a review of N. maculosus capture methods and offer an improved trap design. I identified significant structuring between the combined Licking/Kinniconick basin and the Kentucky River basin, with …

Modulatory Actions Of Serotonergic System In Cardiac Function, Behavior, And Sensorimotor Circuit Activity In Drosophila Melanogaster, Zana R. Majeed
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
In this dissertation, I have focused on the role of serotonin (5-HT) as a modulator in heart rate, feeding and locomotion behaviors as well as sensorimotor circuit activity in Drosophila melanogaster. A general overview in the actions of the serotonergic (5-HTergic) system on the larval heart and nervous system in larvae and adults is reviewed in Chapter One. I sought to further study the actions of serotonergic system to provide additional insights into cellular and molecular underpinnings in the actions of 5-HT.In Chapter two, I present studies on mechanisms of action by 5-HT in larvae cardiac system. For this …
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Regulation Of Pineal Melatonin Rhythms, Ye Li
Intrinsic And Extrinsic Regulation Of Pineal Melatonin Rhythms, Ye Li
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
Circadian rhythm is a biological rhythm with period of about 24 hours. Circadian rhythm is universal in phyla from bacteria to mammals and exists in different level from gene expression to behavior. Circadian system consists of three components: 1) a self-sustained oscillator; 2) an input pathway which can alter the phase of the oscillator; and 3) an output such as gene expression, enzyme activity, hormone production, heart rate, body temperature or locomotor activities. The way the oscillator regulates its outputs is complicated, in that on one hand usually the oscillator is not the only factor affecting the outputs, and on …
Characterization Of Somatically-Eliminated Genes During Development Of The Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus), Stephanie A. Bryant
Characterization Of Somatically-Eliminated Genes During Development Of The Sea Lamprey (Petromyzon Marinus), Stephanie A. Bryant
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
The sea lamprey (Petromyzon marinus) undergoes programmed genome rearrangements (PGRs) during early development that facilitate the elimination of ~20% of the genome from the somatic cell lineage, resulting in distinct somatic and germline genomes. To improve our understanding of the evolutionary/developmental logic of PGR, we generated computational predictions to identify candidate germline-specific genes within a transcriptomic dataset derived from adult germline and the embryonic stages encompassing PGR. Validation studies identified 44 germline-specific genes and characterized patterns of transcription and DNA loss during early embryogenesis. Expression analyses reveal that several of these genes are differentially expressed during early embryogenesis …
Sleep Alterations In Mouse Genetic Models Of Human Disease, Mansi Sethi
Sleep Alterations In Mouse Genetic Models Of Human Disease, Mansi Sethi
Theses and Dissertations--Biology
Sleep is a process essential for the well-being of an animal and in humans as much as one-third of our life is spent in sleep. Yet, the biological need for sleep still remains a conundrum. Our knowledge of the genes influencing sleep and the mechanisms regulating the process can be advanced with the utilization of genetic and genomic approaches which, in turn, may inform us about the functions of sleep as well. With this goal, I have investigated and examined sleep-wake phenotypes for a variety of transgenic and knock out animals.
For the first part of my research (Chapter 3), …
Exploration Of The Srx-Prx Axis As A Small-Molecule Target, Murli Mishra
Exploration Of The Srx-Prx Axis As A Small-Molecule Target, Murli Mishra
Theses and Dissertations--Toxicology and Cancer Biology
Lung cancer is a leading cause of cancer-related mortality irrespective of gender. The Sulfiredoxin (Srx) and Peroxiredoxin (Prx) are a group of thiol-based antioxidant proteins that plays an essential role in non-small cell lung cancer. Understanding the molecular characteristics of the Srx-Prx interaction may help design the strategies for future development of therapeutic tools. Based on existing literature and preliminary data from our lab, we hypothesized that the Srx plays a critical role in lung carcinogenesis and targeting the Srx-Prx axis or Srx alone may facilitate future development of targeted therapeutics for prevention and treatment of lung cancer. First, …

Can Dna Be Speech?, Jorge R. Roig
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
DNA is generally regarded as the basic building block of life itself. In the most fundamental sense, DNA is nothing more than a chemical compound, albeit a very complex and peculiar one. DNA is an information-carrying molecule. The specific sequence of base pairs contained in a DNA molecule carries with it genetic information and encodes for the creation of particular proteins. When taken as a whole, the DNA contained in a single human cell is a complete blueprint and instruction manual for the creation of that human being.
This Article discusses a myriad of current and developing ways in which …

Access-To-Error, Michal Shur-Ofry
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal
Access to knowledge is a crucial part of the innovation paradigm, and its significance for development and progress is well recognized Conversely, the role of errors, failures, and additional types of negative information in the dynamics of innovation is insufficiently explored in law and policy scholarship. This Article focuses on errors as drivers of innovation, and explores new ways for facilitating access to error.
Drawing on multidisciplinary research-ranging from philosophical accounts of progress through studies of complex systems to accumulating reflections from diverse scientific communities-this Article demonstrates that, counterintuitively, errors and innovation are inextricably linked. Yet, the principal legal, institutional, …

Characterization Of Ubiquitin-Proteasome Dynamics In Caenorhabditis Elegans Muscle Cells During Protein-Folding Stress, Gregory A. Skibinski
Characterization Of Ubiquitin-Proteasome Dynamics In Caenorhabditis Elegans Muscle Cells During Protein-Folding Stress, Gregory A. Skibinski
Dissertations
In order to adapt to changing conditions and life stages, cells must remodel the composition of the proteome by specifically removing obsolete or damaged proteins. Failure to remove proteins at the appropriate time can cause a variety of cellular dysfunctions that can lead to cell death and conditions such as cancer, Huntington's, Parkinson's and Alzheimer's disease. Protein quality control is especially important during aging and stress, as the accumulating load of damaged, misfolded, and aggregated proteins can overwhelm the cell's ability to maintain the proteome. The ubiquitin-proteasome system is responsible for the specific degradation of many proteins within eukaryotic cells. …
The Relationship Between Student Performance On A Reading Progress Monitoring Measure And The Washington State Standardized Test, Miriam Mickelson
The Relationship Between Student Performance On A Reading Progress Monitoring Measure And The Washington State Standardized Test, Miriam Mickelson
Education Dissertations
Some experts and educators believe that learning to read is critical to success in and out of school (Lonigan & Phillips, 2015; Nation and Norbury, 2005; O’Connor & Klein, 2004). Schools, therefore, have the responsibility to ensure that all students become proficient readers, especially by the end of third grade, considered to be a pivotal year for literacy (Hernandez, 2011; Lesnick, Goerge, Smithgall, & Gwynne, 2010). Promoting literacy entails providing students with effective literacy instruction shaped and guided by timely, reliable, and meaningful assessment results. Assessment should inform instruction, which hopefully leads to student mastery of state mandated reading standards. …
The Trans-Pacific Partnership:The Death-Knell Of Generic Pharmaceuticals?, Alexander Stimac
The Trans-Pacific Partnership:The Death-Knell Of Generic Pharmaceuticals?, Alexander Stimac
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
As global commerce continues to expand, many states find international trade agreements to be a useful tool to facilitate this continued expansion. Trade agreements permit developing or poorer nations to establish robust, mutually beneficial trade relationships with powerful economies such as the United States. In the face of regional competition from China, several nations bordering the Pacific Ocean, including the United States, have reached a far-reaching trade agreement called the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). This Note will focus on one particular piece of the TPP: the pharmaceutical trade and the international availability of generic medicines. The TPP has the potential to …
Private Governance Can Increase Shipping's Efficiency And Reduce Its Impacts, Daniel J. Metzger
Private Governance Can Increase Shipping's Efficiency And Reduce Its Impacts, Daniel J. Metzger
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
The shipping industry is a huge component of the world economy, and although it is often described as an efficient mode of transport, it still contributes as much carbon dioxide to the atmosphere as a major industrialized nation. Efficiency technologies and practices are available that would significantly lessen shipping's environmental impact, but "amazing loophole[s]" in international environmental law and a set of market failures have prevented them from being widely adopted. These problems have been studied before, but the public regulatory proposals being discussed run into steep, if not insurmountable obstacles. This Note argues that shipping inefficiency can be better …
Mystery Date: Advocating For A Harmonized System Of Expiration Date Labeling Of Food, Akshat Tiwari
Mystery Date: Advocating For A Harmonized System Of Expiration Date Labeling Of Food, Akshat Tiwari
Vanderbilt Journal of Transnational Law
Americans throw out roughly 25 percent of the food they bring home. Negative perceptions associated with expiration dates are a leading cause for this waste. However, a complex patchwork of state-run regulatory regimes and varying terminology makes it difficult for consumers to determine whether a food product is unsafe to eat or simply past a peak quality level arbitrarily set by manufacturers. Regulatory trends in Europe, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand suggest a move towards binding expiration date labeling through guidelines for establishing a "best before" or "use-by" date. This Note examines laws currently in place in …
Factors Influencing The Collagen Fiber Angle Distribution In The Mouse Aorta, Shana Roach Watson
Factors Influencing The Collagen Fiber Angle Distribution In The Mouse Aorta, Shana Roach Watson
Theses and Dissertations
The aortic extracellular matrix (ECM) consists of microstructural proteins, collagen and elastin, together with proteoglycans and other components. The matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) are proteolytic enzymes that influence morphological and structural changes in the ECM and can degrade the matrix as it responds to cellular behaviors such as angiogenesis, apoptosis, proliferation, and migration. Collagen is the most important component among the extracellular proteins because it provides strength and stability to the tissue. Changes in collagen content play a major role in the development of atherosclerosis. These changes can be induced by increased or decreased proteinase activity. Therefore, we studied the collagen …
Virus Particles Provide Nanotopographical Cues For Osteogenic Differentiation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Kamolrat Metavarayuth
Virus Particles Provide Nanotopographical Cues For Osteogenic Differentiation Of Mesenchymal Stem Cells, Kamolrat Metavarayuth
Theses and Dissertations
One key aspect of tissue engineering is to develop biomimetic scaffolding materials that can modulate the proliferation, self-renewal and differentiation of multipotent stem cells into different lineages. Bone marrow derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) can differentiate into several target cells such as osteoblasts, chondrocytes, adipocytes, and smooth muscle cells. BMSCs are commonly used for in vitro osteogenesis studies in bone tissue engineering field. However the mechanisms and signaling pathways that these cells use to recognize and response to biomaterial surface are still unclear. This dissertation focuses on investigating the effect of chemical and physical cues introduced by virus nanoparticles on …
The Development Of ‘Meaning’ In Literary Theory: A Comparative Critical Study, Mahmoud Mohamed Ali Ahmad Elkordy
The Development Of ‘Meaning’ In Literary Theory: A Comparative Critical Study, Mahmoud Mohamed Ali Ahmad Elkordy
Theses and Dissertations
This research project studies different approaches to the question of meaning in literary texts in medieval Islamic critical traditions and modern Western literary criticism. Based on a comparative analysis, the dissertation attempts to explain each theory in its own terms, to find the commonalities and differences of the handling of such a question by literary theories, to establish a dialogue between the theories to understand them better and in wider terms. Thus, the dissertation also analyzes some texts by looking at them through the lenses of different theories.
Education Through Violence In Modern American Literature, Adam Griffey
Education Through Violence In Modern American Literature, Adam Griffey
Theses and Dissertations
“Education through Violence in Modern American Literature” examines how violence is employed as a pedagogical tool in overseeing the transition of young people into adulthood in twentieth and twenty-first century American literature. Examining texts by Robert Cormier, John Knowles, Suzanne Collins, Orson Scott Card, Flannery O’Connor, James Baldwin, and Cormac McCarthy, this study demonstrates that a pedagogy of violence may be used as a coercive method to further the goals of the powerful, but it is equally interested in the ways that young people are able to rebel against structural systems of power that demand conformity and adherence to social, …
A Performance Practice Guide For Select Baroque Transcriptions For Clarinet, Michael Brady Hough
A Performance Practice Guide For Select Baroque Transcriptions For Clarinet, Michael Brady Hough
Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of the study is to provide a performance practice guide of selected works from the Baroque period that are transcribed for clarinet.
The Baroque period has an important but often overlooked wealth of literature for clarinet players. Although there are few original works for the clarinet that were composed during this period due to the clarinet's later development, there is still much that clarinet players can learn from this important body of work.
Performance practice of Baroque transcriptions is particularly significant. For instance, taking music written for a string instrument and transcribing it for a wind instrument brings …
Citrate Coated Silver Nanoparticles With Modulatory Effects On Aflatoxin Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Parasiticus, Chandrani Mitra
Citrate Coated Silver Nanoparticles With Modulatory Effects On Aflatoxin Biosynthesis In Aspergillus Parasiticus, Chandrani Mitra
Theses and Dissertations
The manufacture and usage of silver nanoparticles has drastically increased in recent years (Fabrega et al. 2011a). Hence, the levels of nanoparticles released into the environment through various routes have measurably increased and therefore are concern to the environment and to public health (Panyala, Peña-Méndez and Havel 2008). Previous studies have shown that silver nanoparticles are toxic to various organisms such as bacteria (Kim et al. 2007), fungi (Kim et al. 2008), aquatic plants (He, DorantesAranda and Waite 2012a), arthropods (Khan et al. 2015), and mammalian cells (Asharani, Hande and Valiyaveettil 2009) etc. Most of the toxicity studies are carried …

Linking Obesity & Breast Cancer: Role Of Monocyte Chemoattractant Protein-1 And High Fat Diet-Induced Inflammation On Mammary Tumorigenesis, Taryn L. Cranford
Theses and Dissertations
More than two-thirds of the adult population in the United States is classified as overweight or obese. In order to fully comprehend this rapidly increasing dilemma, further understanding of the complex phenomena that are involved with obesity and its many comorbidities is necessary. Chronic inflammation represents a distinctive, recurrent feature of obesity and has been associated with an increased risk of breast cancer. Monocyte chemoattractant protein 1 is a crucial component of the inflammatory process and represents a potential therapeutic treatment target, not only in obesity but also in breast cancer. Using a monocyte chemoattractant protein deficient model, we examined …

Theses and Dissertations
A novel two-stage pressure swing adsorption (PSA) system has been developed to remove metabolic CO2 removal from the spacecraft cabin air of the International Space Station (ISS). This PSA system enriches and recovers the CO2 to make it suitable for use in a Sabatier reactor (CO2 reduction). This two-stage PSA process utilizes Stage 1 to concentrate metabolic CO2 from about 0.2667 vol% to about 40 to 60 vol% and Stage 2 to further enrich the CO2 product from Stage 1 up to > 97 vol% CO2, while recovering at least 95% of it, which corresponds to removing 4.0 kg/day of CO2. …

Crystallographic Study Of Mutant Influenza Matrix (M1) Protein And Affinity Study Of Small Molecule Inhibitors Toward M1 And Growth Factors, Bashayer Althufairi
Theses and Dissertations
Influenza A virus (IAV) is a seasonal infectious agent that could cause a major worldwide catastrophe. Due to its genetic properties, IAV generates new viral particles that resist the body’s immune defense and antiviral drug therapy. This occurs when a host cell has been co-infected by different IAV strains leading to the generation of hybrid viruses. This process is called reassortment. The majority of these new IAVs contain genetically altered hemagglutinin (HA) and neuraminidase (NA). Unfortunately, all current IAV drug therapies target the highly mutated proteins, HA and NA, which is not very useful. Influenza matrix protein 1 (M1) is …

Browse all Theses and Dissertations
The unique protein-based structure of Sucker Ring Teeth (SRT) of cephalopods have spurned research into the molecular design, physical characteristics, functionality and mechanical properties to explore biomimetic engineering and biochemical potential for eventual industrial production. Previous research has elucidated the potential for scientific and industrial exploitation. However, much of the previous research focused on the most abundant protein isoform of the sucker ring teeth, suckerin-19 (also known as suckerin-39) from the Jumbo or Humboldt Squid (Dosidicus Gigas). There is little known about the characteristics of the other 37 protein isoforms of Sucker Ring Teeth. Although the other isoforms have similar …
