Flexible Needle-Tissue Interaction Modeling With Depth-Varying Mean Parameter: Preliminary Study, Kai Guo Yan, Tarun Podder, Yan Yu, Tien-I Liu, Christopher W.S. Cheng, Wan Sing Ng
Bodine Journal
Flexible needle steering has aroused a lot of research interest in recent years. It has the potential to correct targeting errors, which may be caused by needle bending, tissue deformation, or error in insertion angle. In addition, control and planning based on a steering model can guide the needle to some areas that are currently not amenable to needles because of obstacles, such as bone or sensitive tissues. Thus, there is a clear motivation for needle steering. In this paper, a spring–beam– damper model is proposed to describe the dynamics during the needle–tissue contact procedure. Considering tissue inhomogeneity, depth-varying mean …

Nuclear Factor Κb Inhibitors Alleviate And The Proteasome Inhibitor Ps-341 Exacerbates Radiation Toxicity In Zebrafish Embryos, Borbala Daroczi, Gabor Kari, Qing Ren, Adam Dicker Md, Phd, Ulrich Rodeck
Bodine Journal
Inflammatory changes are a major component of the normal tissue response to ionizing radiation, and increased nuclear factor κB (NF-κB) activity is an important mediator of inflammatory responses. Here, we used zebrafish embryos to assess the capacity of two different classes of pharmacologic agents known to target NF-κB to modify radiation toxicity in the vertebrate organism. These were proteasome inhibitors, including lactacystin, MG132, and PS-341 (Bortezomib/VELCADE), and direct inhibitors of NF-κB activity, including ethyl pyruvate (EP) and the synthetic triterpenoid CDDO-TFEA (RTA401), among others. The proteasome inhibitors either did not significantly affect radiation sensitivity of zebrafish embryos (MG132, lactacystin) or …

Tungstate (Vi) Sorption On Hematite: An In Situ Atr-Ftir Probe On The Mechanism, Sudipta Rakshit, Bryan Sallman, Athénais Davantés, Grégory Lefèvre
Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research
Owing to the suspected toxicity and carcinogenicity of tungstate (VI) oxyanions [i.e. mono tungstate and several polytungstate, generally represented by W (VI)], the environmental fate of W (VI) has been widely studied. Sorption is regarded as a major mechanism by which W (VI) species are retained in the solid/water interface. Iron (hydr)oxides have been considered important environmental sinks for W (VI) species. Here we report sorption mechanisms of W (VI) on a common iron oxide mineral-hematite under environmentally relevant solution properties using in situ attenuated total reflectance Fourier transform infrared (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopic probes. Initial W (VI) loadings varied from 10 …

Cervical and high thoracic spinal cord injury (SCI) drastically impairs autonomic nervous system function. Individuals with SCI at thoracic spinal-level 5 (T5) or higher often present cardiovascular disorders that include resting systemic arterial hypotension. Gastrointestinal (GI) tissues are critically dependent upon adequate blood flow and even brief periods of visceral hypoxia triggers GI dysmotility. The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that T3-SCI induces visceral hypoperfusion, diminished postprandial vascular reflexes and concomitant visceral inflammation. We measured in vivo systemic arterial blood pressure and superior mesenteric artery (SMA) and duodenal blood flow in anesthetized T3-SCI rats at 3 …

Influence Of Anterior Thalamic Inactivation On The Retrieval Of Spatial Reference Memory And Working Memory In The Radial Arm Maze, Ryan E. Harvey
Influence Of Anterior Thalamic Inactivation On The Retrieval Of Spatial Reference Memory And Working Memory In The Radial Arm Maze, Ryan E. Harvey
Psychology ETDs
Previous studies have shown that the anterior thalamic nuclei (ATN) contain a large population of head direction cells, which fire as a function of an animal’s directional orientation in an environment, thereby providing a compass-like representation guiding navigation. Recent work has suggested that directional orientation information stemming from the ATN is critical for the generation of hippocampal and parahippocampal spatial representations, and may contribute to the establishment of unique spatial representations in radially oriented tasks such as the radial arm maze. While studies have confirmed that ATN lesions impair the acquisition of new spatial information in variants of the radial …

Alcohol use disorders (AUD) exacerbate neurocognitive dysfunction in Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV+) patients. We have shown that chronic binge alcohol (CBA) administration (13-14 g EtOH/kg/wk) prior to and during simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV) infection in rhesus macaques unmasks learning deficits in operant learning and memory tasks. The underlying mechanisms of neurocognitive alterations due to alcohol and SIV are not known. This exploratory study examined the CBA-induced differential expression of hippocampal genes in SIV-infected (CBA/SIV+; = 2) macaques in contrast to those of sucrose administered, SIV-infected (SUC/SIV+; = 2) macaques. Transcriptomes of hippocampal samples dissected from brains obtained at necropsy (16 …

Physiological Response Of Tamarix Ramosissima (Tamaricaceae) To A Biological Control Agent, Evan B. Craine, Ann Evankow, Katherine Bibee Wolfson, Kathryn Dalton, Holly Swedlund, Casey Bowen, M. Shane Heschel
Western North American Naturalist
Within the last century, the floristic composition of riparian communities in the Southwest has drastically changed following introduction of the exotic tree Tamarix ramosissima. In an attempt to control Tamarix populations, the tamarisk leaf beetle (Diorhabda carinulata) has been utilized as a biological control agent. Three years of data collection at our study sites along Fountain Creek (Fountain, CO) allowed us to characterize the response of Tamarix to invasion by the biological control agent. In analyzing data collected before, during, and after the beetle invasion, we observed a significant effect of foliar herbivory on Tamarix physiology and life …

Gris Grimly's Tales From The Brothers Grimm, Carlie Smith
Gris Grimly's Tales From The Brothers Grimm, Carlie Smith
Children's Book and Media Review
Jacob and Wilhelm Grimm cataloged a treasure trove of European folktales that are brought to new life in this edition. Old favorites like Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, The Elves and the Shoemaker, and Cinderella all make an appearance. Just as intriguing are the lesser known heroes like the princess without hands, the woman who disobeyed the Virgin Mary, and the vast array of animals who form bands, proclaim popes, and search for true love. Perhaps they may appear strange to some readers because the stories are less common, but in many cases these tales have familiar morals and magic. This …
Responding To Modern Flooding: Old English Place-Names As A Repository Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Richard L.C. Jones
Responding To Modern Flooding: Old English Place-Names As A Repository Of Traditional Ecological Knowledge, Richard L.C. Jones
Journal of Ecological Anthropology
Place-names are used to communicate Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) by all indigenous, aboriginal and First Nations people. Here and for the first time, English place-names are examined through a TEK lens. Specifically, place-names formed in Old English—the language of the Anglo-Saxon—and coined between c. 550 and c. 1100 A.D., are explored. This naming horizon provides the basic name stock for the majority of English towns and villages still occupied today. While modern English place-names now simply function as convenient geographical tags Old English toponymy is shown here to exhibit close semantic parallels with many other indigenous place-names around the world. …
