Radial Spokes-A Snapshot Of The Motility Regulation, Assembly, And Evolution Of Cilia And Flagella, Xiaoyan Zhu, Yi Liu, Pinfen Yang
Biological Sciences Faculty Research and Publications
Propulsive forces generated by cilia and flagella are used in events that are critical for the thriving of diverse eukaryotic organisms in their environments. Despite distinctive strokes and regulations, the majority of them adopt the 9+2 axoneme that is believed to exist in the last eukaryotic common ancestor. Only a few outliers have opted for a simpler format that forsakes the signature radial spokes and the central pair apparatus, although both are unnecessary for force generation or rhythmicity. Extensive evidence has shown that they operate as an integral system for motility control. Recent studies have made remarkable progress on the …

Far From The Madding Crowd: A Statutory Response To Crowd Crush, Tracy Hresko Pearl
Far From The Madding Crowd: A Statutory Response To Crowd Crush, Tracy Hresko Pearl
Faculty Articles
Crowd-related injuries and deaths occur with surprising frequency in the United States. In recent years, crowd members in the United States have sustained significant injuries and even fatalities at concerts, sporting events, “doorbuster” sales, nightclubs, and large festivals. While some of these incidents have prompted victims to file negligence suits against event organizers and venue owners, common law has proven to be ineffective at addressing “crowd crush.” Indeed, courts have repeatedly held for defendants in these cases, making a series of scientific and legal errors in the process, and providing little incentive for organizers and owners to improve their crowd …
The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox
The Role Of Fire In Montane Forest Environments In The Willamette National Forest, Oregon, Tamara G. Cox
All Master's Theses
High-resolution charcoal and pollen analyses were used to reconstruct a 16,000-year-long fire and vegetation history of the Blair Lake watershed in the Willamette National Forest of Oregon. The record shows that during the late glacial period, overall fire frequency was relatively low. Pinus and Abies were the dominant vegetation, along with Pseudotsuga and Alnus, suggesting that an open-canopy conifer forest developed soon after the area was glacier free. Fire frequency increased during the early Holocene. Warmer and drier conditions are reflected in the herbaceous vegetation, Artemisia, Poaceae, and Cyperaceae, suggesting that meadows or other openings were part of …

Phosphorus (P) is a critical, geographically concentrated, nonrenewable resource necessary to support global food production. In excess (e.g., due to runoff or wastewater discharges), P is also a primary cause of eutrophication. To reconcile the simultaneous shortage and overabundance of P, lost P flows must be recovered and reused, alongside improvements in P-use efficiency. While this motivation is increasingly being recognized, little P recovery is practiced today, as recovered P generally cannot compete with the relatively low cost of mined P. Therefore, P is often captured to prevent its release into the environment without beneficial recovery and reuse. However, additional …
"You Are In A Better Position To Protect People When You Feel Like You're Protected Yourself" : To What Extent Does Union Membership And Ethical Clinical Social Work Practice Align? : An Exploratory Study, Robyn K. Douglass
Theses, Dissertations, and Projects
The purpose of this study was to examine the question: “to what extent does union membership and ethical clinical social work practice align?” by interviewing Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSW) working within unionized environments. The study focused on the experience of these clinicians within their current working environment and how being a union member allowed them to be able to provide ethical clinical social work practice to their clients/patients. The most compelling findings from this research were that the clinicians felt that union membership did align with providing ethical clinical social work practice to their populations within their agencies or …

Toll-Like Receptor Expression And Signalling In Rat Trigeminal Neurons: Consequences For Oral Infection And Mechanisms Of Orofacial Pain., Martin Helley
Peninsula Dental School Theses
The activation of Toll-like receptors (TLRs), expressed by peripheral sensory neurons, represents an innate surveillance function of sensory neurons with important consequences for neuronal function. Despite recent advances, many properties of neuronal TLRs remain poorly understood, particularly within the trigeminal system. The main objectives of this thesis, therefore, were to better characterise the expression and functional consequences of activation of neuronal TLRs in the setting of orofacial pain. A detailed, quantitative description of TLR4, TLR2 and TLR7 expression within neurochemically- identified sub-populations of trigeminal ganglion (TG) sensory neurons suggests that these receptors are primarily expressed by nociceptor sub-populations. Acute activation …

Ultrasonic Doppler Sonar Sensor System For Extraction Of Walk Signatures, Demba B. Komma
Ultrasonic Doppler Sonar Sensor System For Extraction Of Walk Signatures, Demba B. Komma
Honors Theses
In this work, a portable low cost sensor system is designed for the extraction of walking signatures in humans using the principle of Ultrasonic Doppler Sonar (UDS). UDS involves the use of two ultrasonic transducers acting as a transmitter-receiver pair. The transmitter produces a continuous ultrasonic signal at a specific frequency to be broadcasted onto a moving target, while the receiver will perform a frequency shift on the reflected signal in relation to the movement of the target. The sensor system used in this work is comprised of a frequency generator that drives the transducer with a 40 kHz sine …
Economic Enchantment In Eudora Welty's A Curtain Of Green, Elizabeth Moore
Economic Enchantment In Eudora Welty's A Curtain Of Green, Elizabeth Moore
Honors Theses
This thesis analyzes Eudora Welty's short story collection, A Curtain of Green, and the interactions between its characters and the Mississippi economy. The paper takes into account Eudora Welty's work with the WPA during the Great Depression and her experiences photographing Mississippians throughout the state. Additionally, this thesis uses Welty's terminology when describing her experience of shopping as a child, specifically the enchantment of goods. This material is used to argue that Eudora Welty does address economic elements in her early short stories. Furthermore, this collection demonstrates a difference between gender participation in the economy, particularly among salesmen and female …

Hospitality, Hunting, And The Home In Garden And Gun: Deconstructing Southern Identity Based On Representations Of Gender, Race, And Class, Alexa E. Willcoxon
Honors Theses
In my thesis, I have studied how Southern identity is formed through Southern leisure magazines, specifically Garden & Gun. I chose to narrow my focus by choosing to look only at the 2014 editions of the magazine, and I also looked primarily at the food, alcohol, homes, and hunting sections in order to be concise. Through my research, I have discovered that the magazine, although trying to be inclusive for race and gender, struggles to accurately depict the South. Instead, the magazine focuses on the primarily white, upper classes of the region, which creates and imagined reality for the reader. …

Read Me: The Emergence Of Female Voice In American Epistolary Fiction, Allison Melissa Ramsey
Honors Theses
The objective of the thesis was to study how the letter, as a narrative device provided by the epistolary genre, supplies unheard female characters with an avenue to speak when their worlds do not allow it. In the novels, the letters not only permit a female character to practice building a voice, but also provide a self-reflection and identification experience, which enables the woman to see where she is, rewrite her role, and control where she wants to go. Through reading Hannah Webster Foster's The Coquette, Alice Walker's The Color Purple, Lee Smith's Fair and Tender Ladies, and Maria Semple's …

Streptococcal Collagen-Like Protein 1, Scl1, Modulates Group A Streptococcus Adhesion, Biofilm Formation And Virulence, Beth Alexandra Bachert
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Background: The collagens comprise a large family of versatile proteins found in all three domains of life. The streptococcal collagen-like protein 1, scl1, of group A Streptococcus (GAS) binds extracellular matrix components (ECM), cellular fibronectin and laminin, via the surface-exposed globular domain. GAS strains express scl1 and form biofilm in vitro, except for M3-type strains that are particularly invasive to humans. Hypothesis: Lack of scl1 adhesin in M3 GAS results in decreased adherence and biofilm formation, and increased virulence. Results and Discussion : First crystal structure of the globular domain revealed a unique six-helical bundle fold, consisting of three pairs …

The Evolution Of The Vampire Other: Symbols Of Difference From Folklore To Millennial Literature, Kate Buckley
Honors Theses
With its roots in Eastern Europe and rapidly spreading to Western society in the past few hundred years, the vampire has served as a double for humanity, with the division of self between monstrosity and the human ideal. Vampires in folklore and literature have been a means by which human cultures have identified concepts of human subjectivity (identity), particularly with regard to what various societies have defined as monstrous (being Othered) within human nature. This study examines how the vampire character evolves throughout the centuries, with a specific focus on the less monstrous contemporary vampires who form hybrid communities with …
