Occurrence Of Native Mangroves And Invasive Brazilian Pepper On Recreation Vs. Conservation Spoil Islands, Hailey L. Ambrose
Ocean Engineering and Marine Sciences Student Publications
This study investigated the shoreline distribution of native mangroves and invasive Brazilian Pepper on Recreation and Conservation spoil islands in the Indian River Lagoon (IRL). Based on observations made from earlier research and studies, it was hypothesized that a greater abundance of Brazilian Pepper would be found on the Conservation islands due to the absence of human interaction. The results of this study disproved the hypothesis, but factors affecting the results were analyzed and preparedfor replication of this experiment in future studies.

In Roe v. Wade the Supreme Court identified the abortion right as “inherently, and primarily, a medical decision” to be decided between doctors and their patients. Early abortion case law closely linked the right to the doctor-patient relationship and situated abortion within the context of healthcare. Over the last forty years, however, the abortion right has come to be viewed almost exclusively as a constitutional right of decision-making or “choice.” Under the Court’s current analysis, the abortion right is cabined exclusively as a constitutional right to decide to terminate a pregnancy and, as a result, the Court has upheld significant …

Histological And Behavioral Consequences Of Repeated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Mice, Amanda Nicholle Bolton Hall
Histological And Behavioral Consequences Of Repeated Mild Traumatic Brain Injury In Mice, Amanda Nicholle Bolton Hall
Theses and Dissertations--Physiology
The majority of the estimated three million traumatic brain injuries that occur each year are classified as “mild” and do not require surgical intervention. However, debilitating symptoms such as difficulties focusing on tasks, anxiety, depression, and visual deficits can persist chronically after a mild traumatic brain injury (TBI) even if an individual appears “fine”. These symptoms have been observed to worsen or be prolonged when an individual has suffered multiple mild TBIs. To test the hypothesis that increasing the amount of time between head injuries can reduce the histopathological and behavioral consequences of repeated mild TBI, a mouse model of …
Revenge Pornography And First Amendment Exceptions, Andrew Koppelman
Revenge Pornography And First Amendment Exceptions, Andrew Koppelman
Emory Law Journal
People are marvelously inventive in devising new ways to hurt each other. Some of these new ways involve speech. The Supreme Court has recently declared that speech is protected by the First Amendment unless it is a type of communication that has traditionally been unprotected. If this is the law, then harms will accumulate and the law will be helpless to remedy them. Revenge pornography prohibitions raise a serious free speech problem. They suppress truthful information, and they do so in order to prevent audiences from being persuaded, by that information, to form a viewpoint with which government disagrees: specifically, …
Opa Or Nopa? Restoring Cooperative Federalism In Oil Pollution Enforcement, Jennifer Lamb
Opa Or Nopa? Restoring Cooperative Federalism In Oil Pollution Enforcement, Jennifer Lamb
Emory Law Journal
Catastrophic oil spills are some of the most visible and devastating contemporary environmental disasters. Unfortunately, a loophole in the Clean Water Act has significant potential to limit the United States¿s ability to prosecute those who spill oil. This Comment argues that the application of statutory preclusion to Oil Pollution Act cases is contrary to the original intent of the Congress in drafting the statutory preclusion provision of the Clean Water Act and subsequent Oil Pollution Act amendments. Further, applying statutory preclusion to oil pollution cases undermines effective enforcement. This Comment proposes that the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) should take a …
Wealth Inequality And Family Business, Benjamin Means
Wealth Inequality And Family Business, Benjamin Means
Emory Law Journal
Despite their economic significance, little has been done to investigate whether family businesses contribute to wealth inequality. This Article offers the first legal, and one of the only academic, treatments of the topic and shows that family businesses play a double role. On the one hand, family businesses reinforce existing disparities in wealth and opportunity. Heirs, after all, stand to benefit from the hard work of previous generations. On the other hand, family businesses can be a powerful antidote to inequality, disrupting entrenched class hierarchies and creating opportunities for individuals, families, and ethnic communities. This Article concludes that whether family …
Patent Anticipation And Obviousness As Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook
Patent Anticipation And Obviousness As Possession, Timothy R. Holbrook
Emory Law Journal
The concept of possession in property law operates to allocate property rights among competing claimants by awarding the property to the first to take possession. Possession in this context requires an act that communicates to third parties that someone has exercised dominion over the item. Patent law operates in similar ways. The doctrines of novelty and non-obviousness ask, in essence, whether the public was already in possession of the invention prior to the inventor. If so, then the patent application should be rejected. This possession-based view of novelty and non-obviousness offers important insights and prescriptions. As to novelty, the possession …

Preparation Of A Transferrin-Targeted M13-Based Gene Nanocarrier And Evaluation Of Its Efficacy For Gene Delivery And Expression In Eukaryote Cells, Mohammad Khalajkondori, Mahboobeh Kavoosi, Mohammad Rahmati-Yamchi, Mehdi Kadivar
Turkish Journal of Biology
Bacteriophages are appropriate gene carriers that might be targeted toward target cells using different strategies. Here we prepared a transferrin-targeted M13-based gene nanocarrier (Tf-targeted M13-GFP) and examined its gene delivery and expression efficacy in the AGS cell line. M13 phagemid particles bearing a GFP expression cassette (M13-GFP) were obtained from a recombinant lambda phage through an in vivo excision procedure. Chemical coupling of human holotransferrin molecules (Tf) to the surface of these phagemid particles resulted in Tf-targeted M13-GFP formation, which was then characterized by Phage-ELISA and Cell-ELISA experiments. Immunocytochemistry (ICC) and fluorescence-activated cell sorting (FACS) analysis were used for internalization …

Evaluation Of Genotoxic And Cytologic Effects Of Environmental Stressin Wheat Species With Different Ploidy Levels, Sefa Pekol, Mehmet Cengi̇z Baloğlu, Yasemi̇n Çeli̇k Altunoğlu
Turkish Journal of Biology
Drought and salinity induce biochemical, physiological, morphological, and genetic responses in plants. To understand the damage to different wheat species caused by these stresses, we investigated root-shoot growth, cell division, chromosomal aberrations, and nucleolus organizer regions (AgNORs) in root tip cells. Inhibition of root and shoot growth were observed in diploid, tetraploid, and hexaploid wheat genotypes after salt and drought stresses. Both stresses had adverse effects on dividing cells in root tips of all wheat species and caused a decrease in mitotic index values. Salt and drought lead to the induction of chromosome aberrations and repression of interphase AgNOR parameters. …

Comparative And Phylogenetic Analysis Of Zinc Transporter Genes/Proteins In Plants, Recep Vatansever, İbrahi̇m İlker Özyi̇ği̇t, Ertuğrul Fi̇li̇z
Turkish Journal of Biology
Zinc is an important catalytic element for more than 300 enzymes and plays a structural role in the stabilization of many proteins. Protein domain analysis showed that identified Zn transporter proteins belong to the ZIP protein family (PF02535). Zn transporter sequences were found to have similar molecular weights (33.1-51.4 kDa) and amino acid lengths (306-478 amino acids) with 5.31-8.92 pI values. Subcellular localization of Zn transporters was predicted as the plasma membrane. They had 6-9 putative transmembrane domains with a variable region between TM-3 and TM-4, which could contain a potential histidine-rich metal-binding domain. Moreover, alignment analysis showed that the …

Turkish Journal of Biology
Metal coordination compounds have an important role in the development of novel drugs. Using the resazurin microtitration assay we assessed the cytotoxicity and antiviral activity of the ligand 2-(diphenylphosphino)benzaldehyde 1-adamantoylhydrazone and its Pd(II) and Pt(II) complexes. Cytotoxicity was tested in A549 human lung adenocarcinoma epithelial cells. We observed that the ligand displayed a more pronounced cytotoxic activity than the platinum-based drug, carboplatin. Morphological evaluation of A549 cells treated with the ligand by acridine orange and ethidium bromide double staining revealed the presence of signs of apoptosis. Antiviral activity against poliovirus type 1 was assessed by examination of the cytopathic effect …
