Landscape Analysis Of The Family Planning Situation In Pakistan: Brief Summary Of Findings, Population Council
Reproductive Health
This brief provides a summary of the Landscape Analysis of the Family Planning Situation in Pakistan carried out by the Population Council with the support of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2015–16. The analysis provides a comprehensive assessment of consumer demand, contraceptive service provision, and contraceptive supply, and the provincial policy environment based on primary data collection in eight districts in Punjab, Sindh, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. Its aim is to identify investment opportunities to catalyze an escalation in contraceptive prevalence, enabling Pakistan to meet its FP2020 goals.

Reproductive Health
Concerned about high levels of neonatal mortality, the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa district government in Pakistan expressed a need to adapt and test a new approach—commonly referred to as the “Made-In/Made-For” (MIMF) method—that uses community-based informants to estimate the number of maternal deaths. The current pilot study in Nowshera was commissioned by the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and conducted by the Population Council to test the feasibility of using the method, and community-based informant networks that had been used to measure maternal mortality, for estimating neonatal deaths. This study clearly shows that, in addition to identifying maternal deaths, informant …

From Turkeys To Tamales: Paleoindian To Preclassic Period Faunal Use At Maya Hak Cab Pek Rockshelter In Southern Belize, Stephanie Raye Orsini
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Very little is known about Paleoindian and Archaic subsistence strategies of the people of Mesoamerica prior to the development of ceramics. Rockshelters with good preservation and stratigraphic deposits can provide excellent contexts for a comparative faunal analysis though time. In February of 2014 the Bladen Paleoindian and Archaic Project (BPAP), directed by Dr. Keith Prufer, began excavations at the rockshelter Maya Hak Cab Pek (MHCP). The site has evidence for human activities from the Paleoindian period (11,500 BC to 8,000 BC) through the Preclassic Maya period (2,000 BC to AD 250). This research uses zooarchaeological analysis to investigate animal use …

瑞吉欧·艾米利亚的教师研究: 一个充满活力并不断演变的角色的精髓 / Teacher Research In Reggio Emilia: Essence Of A Dynamic, Evolving Role (Chinese Translated Version)., Carolyn P. Edwards, Lella Gandini
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The Reggio Emilia approach to early childhood education has been studied for more than 50 years. Today, following the influx of new families, tighter financial situation in local government and a generational turnover of educators, there are changes seen in the role and practice of teachers, but also continuities with the past. Teachers are seen as researchers, where research is not only an attitude and approach in everyday living in and outside early childhood programs, but also a questioning attitude and inquiry process. Besides, as colleagues within a network and organization, teachers, with mutual collaboration, and observing and documenting child’s …

Urban Congolese Refugees In Kenya: The Contingencies Of Coping And Resilience In A Context Marked By Structural Vulnerability, Julie A. Tippens
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
The global increase in refugee migration to urban areas creates challenges pertaining to the promotion of refugee health, broadly conceived. Despite considerable attention to trauma and forced migration, there is relatively little focus on how refugees cope with stressful situations, and on the determinants that facilitate and undermine resilience. This article examines how urban Congolese refugees in Kenya promote psychosocial well-being in the context of structural vulnerability. This article is based on interviews (N = 55) and ethnographic participant observation with Congolese refugees over a period of 8 months in Nairobi in 2014. Primary stressors related to scarcity of material …
Insertion Sites Of Feline Leukemia Virus, Alexa M. Salsbury
Insertion Sites Of Feline Leukemia Virus, Alexa M. Salsbury
Senior Honors Theses and Projects
Feline Leukemia Virus (FeLV) is a transmittable RNA retrovirus that inhibits feline immune systems and predisposes its host to infections and diseases. Much is unknown about FeLV, including the nature and location of its insertion sites. Identifying insertion sites of the provirus can provide information about mechanisms of tumorigenesis and identifY new protooncogenes. To search for insertion sites, gene-specific primers were designed and a genome walking method was optimized for our application. Using the optimized process, blood and tissue samples were examined for FeLV provirus. The cat from which we received samples showed neurological symptoms before death; therefore, we hypothesized …

College of Natural and Applied Sciences
Lysosomal cathepsins regulate an exquisite range of biological functions, and their deregulation is associated with inflammatory, metabolic, and degenerative diseases in humans. In this study, we identified a key cell-intrinsic role for cathepsin B as a negative feedback regulator of lysosomal biogenesis and autophagy. Mice and macrophages lacking cathepsin B activity had increased resistance to the cytosolic bacterial pathogen Francisella novicida. Genetic deletion or pharmacological inhibition of cathepsin B down-regulated mechanistic target of rapamycin activity and prevented cleavage of the lysosomal calcium channel TRPML1. These events drove transcription of lysosomal and autophagy genes via transcription factor EB, which increased lysosomal …

Objective: To evaluate the effects of temporal lobe epilepsy (TLE) on corpus callosum (CC) morphometry in patients with TLE. Methods: This retrospective study was conducted at the Faculty of Medicine, Tekirdag Namik Kemal University, Tekirdag, Turkey between November 2010 and December 2013. The epileptic syndrome diagnosis was based on International League Against Epilepsy criteria, and this study was conducted on the MRIs of 25 epilepsy patients and 25 control subjects. We classified the patients according to their duration of epilepsy <10 and ≥10 years. The projection area length (PAL) of the CC was also estimated. Total brain volumes (TBV) were measured on CT images. Results: The mean values of TBV for patients with TLE and the control group were not statistically different, but the CC PAL values were statistically different. The mean CC PAL values of under and over 25 years of age in patients with TLE were statistically different. The mean values of TBV of under and over 10 years duration of TLE were small statistically, but the CC PAL values were statistically different. Conclusion: The results indicate a clear influence of TLE on the structure of the CC rather than TBV.

Walk Like Me, Talk Like Me: The Connection Between Mirror Neurons And Autism Spectrum Disorder, Jillian M. Saffin, Hassaan Tohid
Neurosciences
Understanding social cognition has become a hallmark in deciphering autism spectrum disorder. Neurobiological theories are taking precedence in causation studies as researchers look to abnormalities in brain development as the cause of deficits in social behavior, cognitive processes, and language. Following their discovery in the 1990s, mirror neurons have become a dominant theory for that the mirror neuron system may play a critical role in the pathophysiology of various symptoms of autism. Over the decades, the theory has evolved from the suggestion of a broken mirror neuron system to impairments in mirror neuron circuitry. The mirror neuron system has not …

Medical evidence is obtainable from approaches, which might be descriptive, analytic and integrative and ranked into levels of evidence, graded according to quality and summarized into strengths of recommendation. Sources of evidence range from expert opinions through well-randomized control trials to meta-analyses. The conscientious, explicit, and judicious use of current best evidence in making decisions related to the care of individual patients defines the concept of evidence-based neurosurgery (EBN). We reviewed reference books of clinical epidemiology, evidence-based practice and other previously related articles addressing principles of evidence-based practice in neurosurgery. Based on existing theories and models and our cumulative years …

For agricultural purposes, drought related stresses negatively affect the Rhizobiaceae in at least three ways. Firstly, rhizobial populations are affected by desertification of agricultural soils. Secondly, the quality of dry-base inocula, also called formula, is negatively affected by a drying step, and thirdly, rhizosphere bacteria protect crop-plants against drought. Although survival of cultivatable bacteria has been studied intensively in dry-base seed inocula and in-vitro, thus far research has only marginally addressed the bacterial cell, its cellular structures and physiology. Many questions remain regarding the sensing of and physiological response of rhizobia to desiccation. This review will focus on the three …

MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Reward learning involves burst firing of midbrain dopamine neurons in the Ventral Tegmental Area (VTA). The resulting dopamine release from VTA terminals instructs regions like the prefrontal cortex (PFC) about rewards and reward-related cues. Glutamatergic PFC neurons initiate motivated behaviors via innervation of the nucleus accumbens. Chronic use of drugs of abuse such as cocaine disrupts this natural reward pathway, leading to enduring cellular adaptations in dopaminergic signaling that contribute to relapse vulnerability. However, how dopamine modulates activity in this circuitry is not known. We posit that dopamine release from VTA terminals gates intrinsic inhibition in the PFC via a …

Mechanisms Of Subtype-Specific Inhibition Of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate Receptors By Ethanol, Benjamin A. Hughes
MUSC Theses and Dissertations
Alcoholism is a debilitating and costly disease with rates of prevalence totaling nearly 6% worldwide. Treating this disease has proven expensive and in many cases ineffective due in large part to significant gaps in our knowledge of the molecular determinants that drive the pathogenesis of the disorder. Recently, the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor has emerged as a candidate site for the primary inhibitory actions of ethanol on nervous system function. This receptor is an ion channel highly expressed in the nervous system that is activated by the excitatory neurotransmitter glutamate and has been implicated in the induction of a number of …
