The hypo- or hyper-methylation of the human genome is one of the epigenetic features of leukemia. However, experimental approaches have only determined the methylation state of a small portion of the human genome. We developed deep learning based (stacked denoising autoencoders, or SdAs) software named "DeepMethyl" to predict the methylation state of DNA CpG dinucleotides using features inferred from three-dimensional genome topology (based on Hi-C) and DNA sequence patterns. We used the experimental data from immortalised myelogenous leukemia (K562) and healthy lymphoblastoid (GM12878) cell lines to train the learning models and assess prediction performance. We have tested various SdA architectures …

Identifying and protecting shark nurseries is a common management strategy used to help rebuild overfished stocks, yet we know little about connectivity between juvenile and adult populations. By analysing trace metals incorporated into vertebral cartilage, it may be possible to infer natal origin based on nursery-specific chemical signatures. To assess the efficacy of this approach, we collected juvenile blacktip sharks (Carcharhinus limbatus; n = 93) from four regions in the Gulf of Mexico in 2012 and 2013 and analysed their vertebral centra with laser ablation-inductively coupled plasma-mass spectrometry. We observed significant regional differences in six element : Ca …

After the 2014 fatal shooting of Michael Brown, an unarmed 18-year-old African American man, by a White police officer in Ferguson, Missouri, some news organizations included in their immediate coverage a photo of Brown taken from his Facebook page. In a now iconic image, Brown stands in a Nike tank top, unsmiling, and flashing a peace sign (misidentified by some news organizations as a gang sign). Later, less incendiary photos from Brown’s Facebook page surfaced. Within a few days of Brown’s death, the hashtag #IfTheyGunnedMeDown appeared on social media. Young African Americans posted two photos of themselves, representing positive and …

The Admissibility Of Aerial Photographs - Evidentiary Foundations., Kristopher R. Hufstetler

St. Mary's Law Journal

Services such as Google Maps and MapQuest significantly impact how consumers use the Internet. For as much as they contribute to Internet use, issues arise concerning the use of satellite images and aerial photographs in the context of litigation. Historical concerns about satellite and aerial imagery typically involved expectations of privacy and the application of the Fourth Amendment. Courts and citizens alike express concern with when and where privacy ends with respect to aerial views. Concerns as to the admissibility of aerial photographs have also been prominent. Specifically, interest in admissibility of these photographs focuses on sufficiency, relevance, and accuracy. …

Through examining leading incidents that defined the PRC's history, this Article provides a detailed examination of how the Party used a constitutional framework to achieve its specific agenda of the time.

Animism Among Western Buddhists, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2016

Animism Among Western Buddhists, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

Myriad instances of animist phenomena abound in the Buddhist world, but due to the outdated concepts of thinkers such as Edward Tylor, James George Frazer, and Melford Spiro, commonly scholars perceive this animism merely as the work of local religions, not as deriving from Buddhism itself. However, when one follows a number of contemporary scholars and employs a new, relational concept of animism that is based on respectful recognition of nonhuman personhoods, a different picture emerges. The works of Western Buddhists such as Stephanie Kaza, Philip Kapleau Roshi, and Gary Snyder express powerful senses of relational animism that arise specifically …

The Maternal Personhood Of Cattle And Plants At A Hindu Center In The United States, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2016

The Maternal Personhood Of Cattle And Plants At A Hindu Center In The United States, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

Religious experiences with sacred nonhuman natural beings considered to be “persons” remain only vaguely understood. This essay provides a measure of clarification by engendering a dialogue between psychoanalytic self psychology on one side and, on the other, religious experiences of cattle and Tulsi plants as holy mothers at a Hindu cattle sanctuary in the United States. Ethnographic data from the Hindu center uncover experiences of sacred maternal natural beings that are tensive, liminal, and colored with affective themes of nurturance, respect, and intimacy, much like psychoanalytic maternal selfobjects. Devotees protect cattle and ritually venerate plants because these actions facilitate a …

Groundhog Oracles And Their Forebears, Daniel S. Capper Jan 2016

Groundhog Oracles And Their Forebears, Daniel S. Capper

Faculty Publications

Groundhog Day animal weather forecasting ceremonies continue to proliferate around the United States despite a lack of public confidence in the oracles. This essay probes religio-historical and original ethnographic perspectives to offer a psychological argument for why these ceremonies exist. Employing Paul Shepard’s notion of a felt loss of sacred, intimate relationships with nonhuman nature, as well as Peter Homans’ concept of the monument that enables mourning, this essay argues that groundhog oracles serve as monuments that allow humans experientially to attempt to heal lost sacred relationships with animals like weather forecasting bears, hedgehogs, and badgers

Public Participation In Risk Regulation: The Flaws Of Formality, Emily Hammond

Utah Law Review

Dread risks draw significant public attention in both the administrative process and the courts. Yet there are a number of dysfunctions at the intersection of procedures, participation, and agency decision-making regarding such risks. This Article elaborates the participatory dysfunctions for dread risk regulation, considering formal APA procedures as well as casting complexity as a variety of formality. Inspired by recent executive actions for improving participation and incorporating social science insights into the regulatory process, this Article sets a research agenda that spans the fields of risk perception, procedural justice, and administrative law.

Mediation As Regulation: Expanding State Governance Over Private Disputes, Lydia Nussbaum Jan 2016

Mediation As Regulation: Expanding State Governance Over Private Disputes, Lydia Nussbaum

Utah Law Review

Across the United States, state legislatures are issuing new mediation mandates that govern how private parties resolve their disputes. Legislatures embed these mediation mandates into specific statutory regimes ranging from foreclosure to health care to insurance coverage. Rather than leave decisions about ADR design to other state institutions, like courts or administrative agencies, legislatures increasingly retain that authority and formalize the mediation process with legal requirements that regulate parties’ behavior and influence mediation outcomes. This Article explains how legislatures wield mediation as a regulatory tool in this latest phase of mediation’s institutionalization. It argues that statutory mediation mandates should be …

From Rights To Dignity: Drawing Lessons From Aid In Dying And Reproductive Rights, Yvonne Lindgren Jan 2016

From Rights To Dignity: Drawing Lessons From Aid In Dying And Reproductive Rights, Yvonne Lindgren

Utah Law Review

The transformation of AID from a constitutional rights frame to a healthcare frame highlights the importance of developing a healthcare model related to dignity that isundergirded by social support, legal rights and healthcare access. However, the history of the abortion right cautions against narrowly identifying healthcare within the confines of the individual doctor-patient relationship because it risks subordinating the decisional autonomy of patients to the decision-making of their doctors. Taken together, these movements gesture toward situating rights within a healthcare framing that considers how social, political and economic systems and relationships come to bear upon decision-making. I conclude that while …

Combined Effects Of Ocean Acidification, Ocean Warming And Oil Spill On Aspects Of Development Of Marine Invertebrates, Maj Arnberg Jan 2016

Combined Effects Of Ocean Acidification, Ocean Warming And Oil Spill On Aspects Of Development Of Marine Invertebrates, Maj Arnberg

School of Biological and Marine Sciences Theses

For decades, humans have impacted marine ecosystems in a variety of ways including contamination by pollution, fishing, and physical destruction of habitats. Global change has, and will, lead to alterations in in a number of abiotic factors of our ocean in particular reduced oxygen saturation, salinity changes, elevated temperature (ocean warming or OW) and elevated carbon dioxide (ocean acidification or OA). Now and in the future, OA and OW will operate together with local anthropogenic drivers such as oil pollution. And yet, at present, very little is known about their potential combined interactive effects on physiological performance and tolerance of …

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em: Intellectual Property Rights In The Tobacco Industry Going Up In Smoke, Kristen Lease Jan 2016

Smoke 'Em If You Got 'Em: Intellectual Property Rights In The Tobacco Industry Going Up In Smoke, Kristen Lease

Case Western Reserve Journal of International Law

The Tobacco Plain Packaging Act (TPPA) was passed in Australia in 2011 and set restrictions on the appearance of tobacco packages. The restrictions limited the use of trademarks to only the brand name, and banned any use of distinctive colors or images. Tobacco growing nations believed this restriction on trade dress violated Article 20 of the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) Agreement, which guarantees that no restriction may unjustifiably encumber intellectual property. Article 8 of the TRIPS Agreement, however, allows for encumbrances when it is intended to promote the protection of public health and safety. The tobacco growing …

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compound And Metal Contamination And Remediation In Torch Lake, Houghton County, Mi, Ankita Mandelia Jan 2016

Polychlorinated Biphenyl Compound And Metal Contamination And Remediation In Torch Lake, Houghton County, Mi, Ankita Mandelia

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Torch Lake was subject to approximately 100 years of industrial pollution due to the dumping of waste associated with copper mining in the Keweenaw Peninsula, which lasted from approximately the 1860s through the 1960s. It is well-known that this waste included copper-containing mine tailings. What was less understood are the impacts of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and heavy metals besides copper on the lake system.

The objectives of this thesis are to summarize the status of contamination and remediation activities in Torch Lake and to estimate the magnitude of potential sources of PCBs to Torch Lake. First, a brief overview of …

A Wireless Sensor System With Digitally Controlled Signal Conditioning Circuit For Force Monitoring At Bone Fixation Plates, Govindan Suresh

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Post-rehabilitation of orthopedic surgery is critical for bone fracture treatments. Current protocols are not based on quantitative assessments of the patient condition but they are conservative estimations mostly based on prior experience and physician’s opinions. While there are quantitative methods for assessing the recovery of orthopedic surgery, they are typically very expensive and provide only snapshots during the healing process. A standalone, reconfigurable, embedded wireless sensor system with digitally controlled signal conditioning system capable of providing continuous monitoring of bone healing is developed. Strain sensor measurements were validated against a commercial mechanical loading instrument for relevant loads that an animal …

Salt Sensitive Hypertension And Orexin, Mike Huber Jan 2016

Salt Sensitive Hypertension And Orexin, Mike Huber

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Elevated plasma arginine vasopressin (AVP) levels have been found in human hypertension subjects and several salt dependent experimental animal models of hypertension including the Dahl salt sensitive hypertension (SSHTN) model. The orexin system is involved in AVP regulation and its over activation has been implicated in hypertension, however, the role of brain orexin in SSHTN is unknown. We hypothesized that increased activity of orexin in the paraventricular nucleus (PVN), a prominent region in AVP production, contributes to SSHTN via enhancing AVP signaling. Eight-week-old male adult Dahl salt sensitive (DS) and age and sex matched Sprague Dawley (SD) rats were placed …

Carbon Flux Dynamics In High Altitude Peatlands In The Ecuadorian Andes, Maria Elisa Sanchez Garces Jan 2016

Carbon Flux Dynamics In High Altitude Peatlands In The Ecuadorian Andes, Maria Elisa Sanchez Garces

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Although knowledge of peatland CH4 and CO2 exchange in temperate mountain ecosystems is available, information about carbon (C) exchange in peatlands of the Andean mountains is limited and these ecosystems may behave differently given the particular characteristics of the Andean tropics. These ecosystems are highly productive and under pressure by grazing. Our first objective was to measure baseline carbon dioxide (CO2) and methane (CH4) flux in an undisturbed peatland in Cayambe-Coca National Park. Our second objective was to quantify CO2 and CH4 fluxes in an intensively cattle grazed peatland near Antisana Ecological …

Activity Level As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Child And Maternal Anxiety, Paige Marie Ryan Jan 2016

Activity Level As A Moderator Of The Relationship Between Child And Maternal Anxiety, Paige Marie Ryan

LSU Master's Theses

Anxiety is excessive and impairing for approximately 30% of individuals. Families with anxiety problems tend to pass on those problems to their children, specifically due to a variety of factors: genetics, parenting style, and other environmental risks. On the other hand, promoting behaviors like positive activity scheduling, participation in clubs, and physical activity has been shown to decrease symptoms of anxiety. However, research has yet to focus on this relationship by increasing activity level (e.g., participation in organizations, hobbies, sports). The purpose of this study is to investigate if the relationship between maternal and child anxiety is dependent upon the …

Early Copper Smelting In The Lake Superior Region:A Case Study Of The Isle Royale And Ohio Mining Company, 1846-1852, Adrian Blake

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

The lodes of native copper found in the Lake Superior region presented new opportunities for investors and miners alike. Making these opportunities pay required the unique challenges presented by the region’s remoteness and unique geological formations to be overcome. A primary way in which these newly emerging companies overcame these challenges was through successful vertical integration of the copper refining industries. Smelting came to the region early, but met with little success as the workers first needed to retool their skills and experiences to the demands of the region’s mineral deposits. In 1848 the Isle Royale and Ohio Mining Company …

Effect Of Disulfide Bond Scrambling On Protein Stability, Aggregation, And Cytotoxicity, Colina Dutta Jan 2016

Effect Of Disulfide Bond Scrambling On Protein Stability, Aggregation, And Cytotoxicity, Colina Dutta

Dissertations, Master's Theses and Master's Reports

Proteins are nano-machines that carry out majority of the cellular functions. Thermodynamically they are functional and stable within a very narrow range (1 kcal/mol). External perturbations in the form of pH change, thermal, or oxidative/reducing stress can destabilize the protein resulting in misfolding and aggregation. Prolonged environmental stress can affect the cells adaptive response resulting in loss of ability to refold or recycle proteins. This can lead to accumulation of misfolded or aggregated proteins within the cell. Such accumulation of aggregated proteins have been associated with neurodegenerative disorders such as Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), Parkinson’s, Huntington’s, and Alzheimer’s disease. There …
