Radiation Damage Study Of A Dpp Polymer Using Transmission Electron Microscope, Sai Bharadwaj Vishnubhotla Dec 2015

Radiation Damage Study Of A Dpp Polymer Using Transmission Electron Microscope, Sai Bharadwaj Vishnubhotla

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

In general polymeric materials are sensitive to the electron beam in the transmission electron microscopes (TEM). Radiolysis or ionization is the primary mechanism by which these materials are damaged under electron irradiation. Moreover, the image resolution of these materials in a TEM is determined by radiation damage. In the following work we determine the radiation sensitivity and damage mechanism for a single crystal organic material 3,6-bis (5-(4-n-butylphenyl) thiophene-2-yl)-2,5-bis (2-ethylhexyl) pyrrolo[3,4-c]pyrrole-1,4-dione (DPP-PR) majorly used for organic photovoltaic (OPV) applications as a donor material. We provide a complete experimental and analysis procedure for radiation damage study by utilizing electron diffraction patterns. First …

Structurally Integrated, Damage Tolerant Thermal Spray Coatings: Processing Effects On Surface And System Functionalities, Andrew Vackel Dec 2015

Structurally Integrated, Damage Tolerant Thermal Spray Coatings: Processing Effects On Surface And System Functionalities, Andrew Vackel

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Thermal Spray (TS) coatings have seen extensive application as protective surfaces to enhance the service life of substrates prone to damage in their operating environment (wear, corrosion, heat etc.). With the advent of high velocity TS processes, the ability to deposit highly dense (>99%) metallic and cermet coatings has further enhanced the protective ability of these coatings. In addition to surface functionality, the influence of the coating application on the mechanical performance of a coated component is of great concern when such a component will experience either static or cyclic loading during service. Using a process mapping methodology, the …

Defect Studies And Optimization Of Cvd Grown Boron Phosphide Films On Different Substrates, Xuejing Wang Dec 2015

Defect Studies And Optimization Of Cvd Grown Boron Phosphide Films On Different Substrates, Xuejing Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Boron phosphide (BP), a light III-V indirect semiconductor compound with medium band gap of 2.0 eV, has emerged as a promising material with its applications in solid-state neutron technology and semiconductor devices in extreme conditions. Since bulk BP is unavailable, heteroepitaxial film growth is being attempted on various substrates including silicon, silicon carbide (4H, 6H, 3C polytypes), AlN and sapphire of different orientations to determine the best substrate for growing high quality thin films. By investigating the defects (e.g. twins and grain boundaries, threading dislocations, stacking faults, inclusions) present in the BP epilayer using synchrotron white beam X-ray topography (SWBXT), …

Effect Of Toxicity Of Rdp In Polymer Scaffolds On Fibroblast Cell, Jae Wha Yang Dec 2015

Effect Of Toxicity Of Rdp In Polymer Scaffolds On Fibroblast Cell, Jae Wha Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The purpose of this thesis is to design substrates with flame retardant and clay to enhance the property of polymer and to study the effect of toxicity of a flame retardant mixed polymer, which had not been conducted in vivo. Therefore the human dermal fibroblast cells, engineered to have green fluorescent membrane (GFFB), were cultured on PS scaffolds with three different conditions: pure PS, PS-Na+-Clay and RDP-Clay. In first part of the study, the polymer samples (PS, PS-Clay and RDP-clay) that would be used as scaffolds were prepared and sterilized to use for cell culture, while testing that sterilization using …

Novel Adhesive Properties Of Poly(Ethylene-Oxide) Adsorbed Nanolayers, Wenduo Zeng Dec 2015

Novel Adhesive Properties Of Poly(Ethylene-Oxide) Adsorbed Nanolayers, Wenduo Zeng

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Solid-polymer interfaces play crucial roles in the multidisciplinary field of nanotechnology and are the confluence of physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. There is now growing evidence that polymer chains irreversibly adsorb even onto weakly attractive solid surfaces, forming a nanometer-thick adsorbed polymer layer (“adsorbed polymer nanolayers†). It has also been reported that the adsorbed layers greatly impact on local structures and properties of supported polymer thin films. In this thesis, I aim to clarify adhesive and tribological properties of adsorbed poly(ethylene-oxide) (PEO) nanolayers onto silicon (Si) substrates, which remain unsolved so far. The adsorbed nanolayers were prepared by the …

Learning Mixed Sparse Factor Networks Structure: A Latent Variable Approach, Ruofeng Wen Dec 2015

Learning Mixed Sparse Factor Networks Structure: A Latent Variable Approach, Ruofeng Wen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Learning and visualizing complex causal or dependence structure among various variables is of great interest in applied science. Probabilistic Graphical Models, including Bayesian Networks and Markov Random Field, are well-developed tools for such problems, particularly when variables are either all categorical or continuous. In the first and major part of this text, we proposed a novel graphical structure learning approach, the MIxed Sparse FActor Network (MISFAN), to accommodate categorical and continuous variables seamlessly in one sparse Probit latent factor model. Such a network bridges the gap among latent variable models, traditional multivariate analysis and graphical models, can visualize the underlying …

On The Route To Chaos For Two-Dimensional Modestly Area-Contracting Analytic Maps, Ying Chi Dec 2015

On The Route To Chaos For Two-Dimensional Modestly Area-Contracting Analytic Maps, Ying Chi

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

It has long been conjectured that the two-dimensional dissipative maps, like their one-dimensional counterparts, experience the period-doubling cascade to chaos. In [CEK], Collet, Eckmann and Koch proved this conjecture for highly dissipative families. In this dissertation, we introduce the notion of nested systems that generalizes Henon maps, and construct two operators acting on the space of nested systems based on the idea of the return maps. We use the two operators to show that if a dissipative nested system satisfies some apriori bounds, then they can be replaced with simpler but dynamically equivalent nested systems. We prove that the total …

Regularized Geometry Of The Loop Space, Cheng Hao Dec 2015

Regularized Geometry Of The Loop Space, Cheng Hao

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Interest in nonlinear sigma models with target space a symmetric space of positive curvature comes from both mathematics and physics. In this dissertation we focus on the two-dimensional nonlinear sigma model with target space the k-dimensional projective space P^k. We study the properties of a finite-dimensional approximation, which we denote by L_N(P^k), to the loop space L(P^k), and construct resolutions of singularities for these truncated loop spaces. We also look into the geometries of such spaces and propose a conjecture about the mass gap of the Schrodinger operator H on L_N(P^k) with analytic formula. | 55 pages

Utilization Of Energy Analytics To Reduce Energy Waste In The Manufacturing Environment, Michael P. Brundage Dec 2015

Utilization Of Energy Analytics To Reduce Energy Waste In The Manufacturing Environment, Michael P. Brundage

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Current manufacturing facilities lack proper performance indicators that can accurately pinpoint areas of energy inefficiency on the manufacturing line. In studying the production dynamics, it is realized that not every disruption event causes permanent production loss for the manufacturing line. Each downtime event is categorized as non-effective (not causing permanent production loss) and effective (causing permanent production loss). This directly leads to the concept of the opportunity window, which is the largest amount of time a machine can be turned off without causing the slowest machine to become blocked or starved. The recovery time is also analyzed, which is the …

Efficient Numerical Algorithms For Heterogeneous Computation Of Pde Extended Systems With Applications, Yiyang Yang Dec 2015

Efficient Numerical Algorithms For Heterogeneous Computation Of Pde Extended Systems With Applications, Yiyang Yang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Partial Differential Equations (PDEs) and corresponding numerical schemes are explored to simulate scientific and engineering problems including parachute simulation and American option pricing. These problems involve appropriate coupling of several equations systems. A revised spring-mass model is used to describe the motion of parachute canopy and string motion which considers both string stiffness and angular stiffness. This model is validated by the material's Young's modulus and Poisson ratio and is proved to be convergent to continuum mechanics. The Navier-Stokes equation is applied to simulate the fluid field and a second-order accurate numerical scheme is used, together with the introduction of …

Specificity In The Regulation And Inhibition Of Src And Related Tyrosine Kinases, Saadat Aleem Dec 2015

Specificity In The Regulation And Inhibition Of Src And Related Tyrosine Kinases, Saadat Aleem

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Dysregulation in the enzymatic activity of Src-family kinases (SFKs) is implicated in multiple disease states, including cancer. SFKs have been intensely investigated as targets for cancer therapeutics. Achieving selectively among the SFKs, and other related non-receptor tyrosine kinases (nRTKs), has proven challenging due to the high similarity in their catalytic domains. Side effects arising from nonspecific binding are common in anticancer therapies, and underscore the need to identify, and exploit differences in these proteins to develop more specific inhibitors. In this study, we have identified differences between the regulatory partners of Src and Brk (Breast Tumor Kinase). We also discuss …

The Dna Damage Response: P53 Regulation Of The Chk1-Suppressed Pathway And Sphingolipid Metabolism, Brittany Carroll Dec 2015

The Dna Damage Response: P53 Regulation Of The Chk1-Suppressed Pathway And Sphingolipid Metabolism, Brittany Carroll

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The DNA damage response (DDR) is a complex and interconnected signaling network that dictates whether a cell repairs itself and survives or is damaged beyond repair and eliminated; therefore the proteins in this network must be tightly regulated in order to ensure genomic integrity. Conversely, mutational or epigenetic inactivation of DDR components leads to genomic instability, a hallmark of cancer. Indeed there is a high frequency of DDR defects in human cancers of which mutations in the DDR effector and tumor suppressor protein p53 are the best characterized and occur in greater than 50% of all human cancers. Interestingly, a …

Functional Study Of Classical Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Mathangi Ramesh Dec 2015

Functional Study Of Classical Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases In Mammary Epithelial Cells, Mathangi Ramesh

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Reversible protein tyrosine phosphorylation is critical for the dynamic regulation of protein function and is maintained by the synchronized and complementary activity of Protein Tyrosine Kinases (PTKs) and Protein Tyrosine Phosphatases (PTPs). Although considerable progress has been made in understanding the function of PTKs, the study of PTPs has lagged behind. Some PTPs have been implicated as products of oncogenes or tumor suppressors. Particularly in breast cancers driven by the oncogenic receptor tyrosine kinase ERBB2, there is evidence for PTPs playing diverse regulatory roles, suggesting that systematic analysis of PTP function could yield important insights into this field which could, …

Mechanism Of Type Iii Secretion System-Triggered Killing Of Yersinia In Macrophages, Xiaoying Wang Dec 2015

Mechanism Of Type Iii Secretion System-Triggered Killing Of Yersinia In Macrophages, Xiaoying Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The mammalian immune system has the ability to discriminate between pathogens and innocuous microbes by detecting conserved molecular patterns. In addition to conserved microbial patterns, the mammalian immune system may recognize distinct pathogen-induced processes, the mechanism of which is poorly understood. Pathogenic Yersinia species utilize a type III secretion system (T3SS) to translocate various bacterial effectors into target cells, which aim to modify multiple host signaling pathways. Interestingly, previous studies have shown that the T3SS in Yersinia pseudotuberculosis leads to decreased survival of this bacterium in primary murine macrophages, the mechanism of which is unknown. Here, we use colony forming …

In Situ Characterization Of Promoted Rh Nanocatalysts During Co Hydrogenation, Robert Mario Palomino Dec 2015

In Situ Characterization Of Promoted Rh Nanocatalysts During Co Hydrogenation, Robert Mario Palomino

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

The world’s dependence on the limited supply of fossil fuels has provided the motivation for research into alternative renewable fuel sources. Ethanol is a promising alternative due to its low toxicity, high energy density, and compatibility with the current fuel distribution system. An attractive route to ethanol production would be through the conversion of synthesis gas or ‘syngas’ (CO + H2), which is currently used to produce methanol, hydrogen, and synthetic fuels (diesel and gasoline). However, there are currently no commercially used catalysts for efficient ethanol production from syngas. In general, catalysts for syngas conversion to ethanol should promote C‒C …

Measurement Of The Elliptic And Triangular Flow In Ultra-Relativistic Cu+Cu And Au+Au Collisions At Sqrt(S_Nn) = 200 Gev, Damian Lee Reynolds

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Differential measurements of the elliptic and triangular flow Fourier coefficients are reported for charged hadrons as a function of transverse momentum and collision centrality for Cu+Cu and Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_NN}$ = 200 GeV measured with the PHENIX detector located at the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The flow coefficients, an important probe in the investigation of the quark-gluon plasma, are measured using a long-ranged two-particle correlation method where the azimuthal angles of particles about midrapidity in the central arm detectors are correlated with hits in detectors located at forward rapidity, ensuring a large pseudorapidity gap to prevent …

Topical Treatment Of Actinic Keratosis And Non-Melanoma Skin Cancer With Phospho-Sulindac And Difluoromethylornithine, Yajing Sun

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Actinic keratosis (AK), a cutaneous lesion resulting from the proliferation of atypical epidermal keratinocytes, has an incidence of 11%-26% and its prevalence is 58 million in the US alone. AK is a precursor to non-melanoma skin cancer (NMSC). NMSC, consisting of squamous cell and basal cell carcinomas, represents the most frequent human cancer. Current treatment for AK and NMSC is often limited by low efficacy, side effects, high cost, and undesirable cosmetic outcomes. Thus new agents for the treatment of AK are urgently needed. In an effort to develop an efficacious, safe and patient-acceptable approach to both AK and NMSC, …

Characterization Of Bacterial Multi-Component Regulatory Systems: Nitric Oxide, Quorum Sensing And, Takahiro B. Ueno Dec 2015

Characterization Of Bacterial Multi-Component Regulatory Systems: Nitric Oxide, Quorum Sensing And, Takahiro B. Ueno

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Bacterial quorum sensing (QS) is an essential cell-to-cell communication system used by bacteria. Bacteria produce and detect small signaling molecules called autoinducers (AIs) to assess their surrounding bacterial population. Once the AI concentration reaches a threshold, the entire bacterial population undertakes a coordinated change in gene expression patterns. Thus, QS enables bacteria to orchestrate population-wide changes in behavior appropriate for different growth phases or environmental conditions. QS is widely spread among bacteria and regulates a wide array of biological functions that are critical for their survival. Controlled manipulation of QS may provide the means for the design of more selective …

Preparation And Characterization Of Stimuli-Responsive Star-Shaped Triblock Copolymers For Gene Delivery, Tianyuan Wu Dec 2015

Preparation And Characterization Of Stimuli-Responsive Star-Shaped Triblock Copolymers For Gene Delivery, Tianyuan Wu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Amphiphilic block copolymers with both a hydrophobic domain and a hydrophilic domain can thermodynamically self-assemble into ordered structures such as spherical micelles, worm-like micelles or vesicles in selective solvents which have great potential for biomedical applications such as drug/gene delivery. Stimuli-responsive amphiphilic block copolymers which can change morphology in response to internal or external stimulus have great potential to achieve controlled release of drugs or genes at specific sites. In this dissertation, two types of stimuli-responsive star-shaped triblock copolymers PEO-S(CKn)-PLA and PEO-(PDEAm)-PLA were synthesized and studied. Amphiphilic cationic star-shaped triblock copolymers with poly(ethylene oxide), poly(D,L-lactide), and poly(L-lysine arms) (PEO-S(CKn)-PLA) were …

Design, Synthesis, And Biological Evaluation Of Novel Taxoid-Based Small-Molecule Theranostic Pet/Spect Imaging Agents And Nano-Scale Asymmetric Bow-Tie Dendrimer Drug Conjugates Towards Tumor-Targeted Chemotherapy, Tao Wang

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Cancer remains the second leading cause of death in the United States. Traditional chemotherapy relies on highly potent cytotoxic agents, such as paclitaxel and docetaxel, to kill rapidly dividing cancer cells. But these drugs usually cause undesired side-effects due to lack of tumor-selectivity, and decreased efficacy against MDR cancer cell lines. Accordingly, newer generation taxoids were designed and evaluated showing several orders of magnitude greater potency than paclitaxel and docetaxel. Over the past decade, significant advancement has been made on the development of newer generation taxoids based on SAR study. As a selected example of second generation taxoid, SB-T-1214 was …

Targeting The Enoyl-Acp Reductase In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis: Mechanism Of Time Dependent Inhibition And Cellular Consequence Of Target Engagement, Weixuan Yu Dec 2015

Targeting The Enoyl-Acp Reductase In Mycobacterium Tuberculosis: Mechanism Of Time Dependent Inhibition And Cellular Consequence Of Target Engagement, Weixuan Yu

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Tuberculosis (TB) infection is the single most lethal bacterial infections in the world. Isoniazid (INH), one of the most effective anti-TB drugs is usually administered to treat latent TB infection and is used in combination therapy to treat active TB. However resistance to INH is common and the emergence of multi-drug-resistant, extensively drug-resistant and now totally drug-resistant strains of TB, has resulted in an urgent need to develop novel anti-TB drugs. INH targets InhA, the enoyl-ACP reductase (FabI) from the Type II fatty acid biosynthesis pathway, and resistance to INH usually results from mutations in KatG, the enzyme that activates …

Implications Of Early-Onset Psychiatric Symptoms For Peer Functioning In Middle-Childhood: A Validity And Clinical Significance Approach, Allison Pennock Danzig Dec 2015

Implications Of Early-Onset Psychiatric Symptoms For Peer Functioning In Middle-Childhood: A Validity And Clinical Significance Approach, Allison Pennock Danzig

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Recent findings indicate that preschoolers experience psychiatric symptoms at rates similar to that of older children and adolescents. However, there are limited data examining the impact of early-onset psychiatric symptoms on subsequent peer functioning. To support the validity and clinical significance of early-emerging symptoms, it is necessary to demonstrate that youth with elevated symptom levels experience significant later difficulties across various domains. Most research linking these constructs has examined the impact of externalizing symptoms on peer functioning cross-sectionally, without consideration of internalizing symptoms. The goals of this study were to derive multiple-informant middle-childhood peer factors, examine the longitudinal impact of …

A Multi-Method Assessment Of Error Sensitivity And Anxiety In Childhood And Adolescence, Alexandria Meyer Dec 2015

A Multi-Method Assessment Of Error Sensitivity And Anxiety In Childhood And Adolescence, Alexandria Meyer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Anxiety disorders are the most frequent form of psychopathology in children and adolescents and often result in chronic impairment. Therefore, there is a critical need to identify markers that characterize normative versus anxious trajectories of development. One promising biomarker of anxiety is altered brain activity in response to errors, as reflected by the event-related potential (ERP), the error-related negativity (ERN). The ERN occurs around the time of error commission and is generated in the anterior cingulate cortex (ACC). An increased ERN has been consistently found in adults with anxiety disorders. Although the ERN is smaller in children and changes across …

Coping With Sexual Orientation-Related Stress: A Weekly Diary Study Of Gay Men, Brian Feinstein Dec 2015

Coping With Sexual Orientation-Related Stress: A Weekly Diary Study Of Gay Men, Brian Feinstein

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Research has consistently demonstrated that gay men are at increased risk for internalizing symptoms and disorders compared to heterosexual men. Although sexual orientation-related stress (SORS) has been identified as a risk factor for internalizing disorders among gay men, little is known about how SORS influences mental health. The current study had three main aims: (1) to examine the associations between individual attributes (internalized homonegativity and rejection sensitivity) and coping strategies used in response to SORS (active and disengaged coping); (2) to examine the associations between coping strategies and internalizing symptoms; and (3) to examine coping strategies as mediators of the …

The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen Dec 2015

The Impact Of Weight-Related Abuse On Self-Perception And Disordered Eating: A Model Of Obesity, Jessica Keefe Salwen

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Obesity affects approximately one-third of the adult population in the U.S. and is one of the primary reasons for bullying in school. While weight-related abuse (WRA) is a specific risk factor for disordered eating (binge eating, emotional eating, night eating, and unhealthy weight control) and negative self-perception, and disordered eating and negative self-perception are predictive of obesity, these relationships have not been addressed with a comprehensive model. Thus, the current study evaluated a structural equation model in which severity of WRA predicted the emotional impact of WRA and negative self-perception, which predicted disordered eating, which in turn predicted current body …

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Artificial neural network model is a powerful method that has been widely applied in many different areas. It is essentially a nonlinear statistical model, empirically proved with good prediction accuracy, and has been applied in both regression and classification problems. One challenge in applying artificial neural network models is constructing proper structure adaptive to specific problems. This thesis work is to introduce a novel, double-layered feed-forward neural network (DNN) model with special link patterns. Its applications to genome-wide association studies and stock price prediction in high frequency time scale have been explored. Detecting gene-gene interactions in traditional Genome-wide associate studies …
