Hydrogen Bond-Mediated Structural Order In Hydroxylated Bis-Mpa Dendritic Polymers: Experimental And Molecular Dynamics Simulation Study, Maliha N. Syed
Dissertations
Dendritic architectures are echoed throughout nature. While the significance of these pervasive patterns is not entirely clear, connections between their structures and physical properties are fascinating to contemplate. Particular interest has been paid to a family of synthetically manufactured and commercially available dendritic polymers based on 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl) propionic acid (bis-MPA) as a monomer. Composed of two hydroxyls and a carboxyl group, bis-MPA based structures hydrogen bond (H-bond) profusely. Given the high concentration and unique spatial orientation of end-groups, as well as the multitude of carbonyl, ester, and ether interior H-bond acceptors, a set of distinct H-bond organizations may be observed …

Since the inception of ecofeminist discourse in the 1970’s, ecofeminists and feminists alike have been divided on their stances toward the ethics of consuming the bodies and by-products of other animals. A powerful cohort of ecofeminists, in part comprised by such scholars as Marti Kheel, Lori Gruen, Greta Gaard, and Carol J. Adams, have done a tremendous amount of work to situate a concern for more-than-human animals within ecofeminism and beyond. Unfortunately, as Cusack highlights, feminism’s failure to both recognize the parallel oppression of “dairy” cows and female farmed animals, and to thoughtfully incorporate that knowledge into feminist praxis has …

Are Pre-School Girls More Likely To Be Under-Nourished In Rural Thatta, Pakistan?-A Cross-Sectional Study., Rozina Nuruddin, Wilbur C. Hadden
Community Health Sciences
BACKGROUND:
Pakistan ranks third lowest on a global gender index (2013) and 13(th) highest on the prevalence of underweight among under-five children (2010). Through this population-based study, we examined gender differentials in the prevalence of stunting, wasting and under-weight defined by World Health Organization (WHO) Growth Standard among rural pre-school Pakistani children.
METHODS:
We performed secondary analysis of data collected through a cross-sectional survey of Thatta district during 1992-93. Prevalence ratios were calculated for 1051 children aged 0-35 months from 95 randomly selected villages of rural Pakistan using a clustered adjusted log binomial model. Level 1 variables included child and …

Comparative Study Of Concrete-Encased Composite Column Strength., Nabil Mahmoud, Saad El-Deen Abd-Rabou, Khaled Megahed
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The objective of this study is to investigate the difference between three approaches used for the design of concrete encased composite columns. The first approach "ECP-SCLRFD [1]" considers the composite column as an equivalent to steel section, the second "Eurocode 4 [2] and AISC [3]" considers the composite column as composite section using rigid plastic stress distribution, and the third "ACI [4] and CSA [5]" is similar to second approach with elastic plastic stress distribution. The comparative study indicates that the second and third approach give good results for composite columns strength compared with the first approach according to physical …

Comparing The Performance Of Unconventional Median U-Turn Intersections And Signalized Intersections: A Simulation Study., Usama Elrawy Shahdah, M. Elshabrawy, S. Elbadawy, A. Gabr, A. Azam
Mansoura Engineering Journal
The Majority of intersections in Mansoura City are not controlled. The unconventional median U-turn (MUT) intersection design is the dominant design in Mansoura. In MUTs, right-turn movements are allowed for all approaches, but through movements are allowed only for the main street traffic. For left-turn in both the major and the minor streets and for through movements for the minor street traffic, vehicles must go through the U-turns in the median to complete their movement. For example, through movements on the minor street have to turn-right first into the main street then make a U-turn into the main street before …

Interaction Between Leg Muscle Performance And Sprint Acceleration Kinematics, Robert G. Lockie, Farzad Jalilvandv, Samuel J. Callaghan, Matthew D. Jeffriess, Aron J. Murphy
Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study investigated relationships between 10 m sprint acceleration, step kinematics (step length and frequency, contact and flight time), and leg muscle performance (power, stiffness, strength). Twenty-eight field sport athletes completed 10 m sprints that were timed and filmed. Velocity and step kinematics were measured for the 0-5, 5- 10, and 0-10 m intervals to assess acceleration. Leg power was measured via countermovement jumps (CMJ), a five-bound test (5BT), and the reactive strength index (RSI) defined by 40 cm drop jumps. Leg stiffness was measured by bilateral and unilateral hopping. A three-repetition maximum squat determined strength. Pearson’s correlations and stepwise …

The Protection Of Privacy In On-Demand Audiovisual Media Services, Katarzyna Chałubińska-Jentkiewicz
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
The Internet allows the provision of on-demand audiovisual media services to an extent which was not possible in the past due to technological limitations. Such varied services are subject to different legal regimes. The basis for these differences can be found in taking responsibility for the content of such services. The medium used to transmit the content cannot be the sole decisive criterion for assessing whether liability associated with the provision of a given type of service is within media law, or if it is excluded from it. The article considers regulatory differences with respect to on-demand services with regard …

Audiovisual Archives Of Public Television - From A ‘Safe’ To Creativity, Robert Kroplewski
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
The article considers a variety of legal issues concerning effective means of sharing audiovisual programmes which constitute archival goods held (in a proverbial ‘safe’) by the Polish public broadcaster TVP. The paper also addresses the issue of the so-called ‘copyrights revival’ concerning old programmes in the context of its extension to the Internet. The article discusses the use of the ‘Creative Commons’ license type, as a way of taking into account the needs of recipients to access audiovisual culture, as well as ensuring the conditions of the ‘Open Development Code’. Media convergence justifies also the thesis on the disappearance of …

The Legitimacy Of Fees For The Reservation Of Frequencies For A Multiplex Operator In The Period Before A Licence To Broadcast Is Actually Granted, Artur Salbert, Anna Żochowska-Sychowicz
internetowy Kwartalnik Antymonopolowy i Regulacyjny (internet Quarterly on Antitrust and Regulation)
The commencement of the dissemination of TV programmes in a multiplex is conditional upon: fi rst, obtaining a reservation of frequencies by a multiplex operator and second, obtaining licenses to broadcast by the broadcasters. The purpose of this article is to analyze the possibility of supporting an interpretation whereby the fees for the reservation of frequencies should only be paid by the multiplex operator starting from the time when the frequencies could actually be used by that multiplex operator to distribute programmes. The Article aims also to assess, in the event of disproving the above interpretation, the conformity of the …

Determining climate change feedbacks from tropical rainforests requires an understanding of how carbon gain through photosynthesis and loss through respiration will be altered. One of the key changes that tropical rainforests may experience under future climate change scenarios is reduced soil moisture availability. In this study we examine if and how both leaf photosynthesis and leaf dark respiration acclimate following more than 12 years of experimental soil moisture deficit, via a through-fall exclusion experiment (TFE) in an eastern Amazonian rainforest. We find that experimentally drought-stressed trees and taxa maintain the same maximum leaf photosynthetic capacity as trees in corresponding control …

Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo
Faculty Work Comprehensive List
This paper begins from one of the most commonly found questions in phenomenology, “What is Phenomenlogy?”, to argue that phenomenology is a trans-disciplinary approach to engaging with the products of human culture. This approach is characterized by paying particular attention to the distinction between facticity and transcendence within “lived experience” so as to help us better articulate and evaluate the promises that animate every human institution. Such a task necessarily requires inter-disciplinary input and helps us engage in our lives—in our shared cultural life—differently.
