Environmental Impacts And Carry-Over Effects In Complex Life Cycles: The Role Of Different Life History Stages, Nnaemeka F. Ezeakacha Dec 2015

Environmental Impacts And Carry-Over Effects In Complex Life Cycles: The Role Of Different Life History Stages, Nnaemeka F. Ezeakacha

Dissertations

A challenge faced by organisms with complex life cycles is how environmental factors experienced at an earlier life stage affect the fitness at that stage or are carried over to subsequent life stages. I used container-inhabiting mosquitoes: Aedes albopictus, Aedes aegypti, Aedes triseriatus and Culex quinquefasciatus to study the interactions and performance of life history stages under specific environmental factors. I investigated the effects of egg-desiccation tolerance on egg viability and larval performance in the Aedes mosquitoes. I found increase in egg hatch rate with relative humidity and interaction between relative humidity and egg storage period. Larval performance …

The Regulation Of Hpv Late Gene Expression And The Potential Role Of Inkt Cells In Cervical Cancer, Patrice Nolan Dec 2015

The Regulation Of Hpv Late Gene Expression And The Potential Role Of Inkt Cells In Cervical Cancer, Patrice Nolan

Masters

Human papillomaviruses (HPVs) are ubiquitous, sexually transmitted viruses present in 99.7% of all cervical cancers, the second most common cancer in females worldwide. Expression of HPV L1 and L2 late genes is found only in terminally differentiated epithelial cells. As L1 and L2 proteins are highly immunogenic, it is suggested that their suppression may prevent detection of the virus by the immune system, thus acting as a prerequisite for persistence of infection. Therefore, if expression of these proteins in the lower cervical layers was induced, it could lead to clearance of the virus. One aim of this thesis was to …

A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy Dec 2015

A Hybrid Approach For Increasing Baffling Factors In Contact Tanks, Justin J. Kattnig, Subhas K. Venayagamoorthy

Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A novel approach using a hybrid combination of internal baffles and industrial packing material is investigated in order to optimize the hydraulic residence time of a 1,500-gal rectangular concrete tank. Hydraulic residence time, which is commonly classified using the baffling factor (BF), was determined from residence time distribution curves obtained using both computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations and physical tracer studies. CFD simulations were used to model two scenarios. The first scenario was a base system consisting of an unbaffled concrete tank, and the second scenario was a two-baffle system. Computational simulation results were experimentally validated via tracer studies on …

Systematic Review Of The Global Epidemiology, Clinical And Laboratory Profile Of Enteric Fever, Asma Azmatullah, Farah Naz Qamar, Durrane Thaver, Anita Km Zaidi, Zulfiqar A. Bhutta

Department of Paediatrics and Child Health

Background: Children suffer the highest burden of enteric fever among populations in South Asian countries. The clinical features are non-specific, vary in populations, and are often difficult to distinguish clinically from other febrile illnesses, leading to delayed or inappropriate diagnosis and treatment. We undertook a systematic review to assess the clinical profile and laboratory features of enteric fever across age groups, economic regions, level of care and antibiotic susceptibility patterns.
Methods: We searched PubMed (January 1964-December 2013) for studies describing clinical features in defined cohorts of patients over varying time periods. Studies with all culture-confirmed cases or those with at …

Dgtd Analysis Of Electromagnetic Scattering From Penetrable Conductive Objects With Ibc, Ping Li, Yifei Shi, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Hakan Bagci

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

To avoid straightforward volumetric discretization, a discontinuous Galerkin time-domain (DGTD) method integrated with the impedance boundary condition (IBC) is presented in this paper to analyze the scattering from objects with finite conductivity. Two situations are considered. 1) The skin depth is smaller than the thickness of the conductive volume. 2) The skin depth is larger than the thickness of a thin conductive sheet. For the first situation, a surface impedance boundary condition (SIBC) is employed, wherein the surface impedance usually exhibits a complex relation with the frequency. To incorporate the SIBC into DGTD, the surface impedance is first approximated by …

A Low Complexity Reweighted Proportionate Affine Projection Algorithm With Memory And Row Action Projection, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty Dec 2015

A Low Complexity Reweighted Proportionate Affine Projection Algorithm With Memory And Row Action Projection, Jianming Liu, Steven L. Grant, Jacob Benesty

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

A new reweighted proportionate affine projection algorithm (RPAPA) with memory and row action projection (MRAP) is proposed in this paper. The reweighted PAPA is derived from a family of sparseness measures, which demonstrate performance similar to mu-law and the l0 norm PAPA but with lower computational complexity. The sparseness of the channel is taken into account to improve the performance for dispersive system identification. Meanwhile, the memory of the filter's coefficients is combined with row action projections (RAP) to significantly reduce computational complexity. Simulation results demonstrate that the proposed RPAPA MRAP algorithm outperforms both the affine projection algorithm (APA) and …

Fast Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For The 3-D Ic Structures With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Chao Zhang, Wenjian Yu, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi Dec 2015

Fast Random Walk Based Capacitance Extraction For The 3-D Ic Structures With Cylindrical Inter-Tier-Vias, Chao Zhang, Wenjian Yu, Qing Wang, Yiyu Shi

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

3-D integrated circuits (3-D ICs) make use of the vertical dimension for smaller footprint, higher speed, lower power consumption, and better timing performance. In 3-D ICs, the inter-Tier-via (ITV) is a critical enabling technique because it forms vertical signal and power paths. Accordingly, it is imperative to accurately and efficiently extract the electrostatic capacitances of ITVs using field solvers. Unfortunately, the cylindrical via shape presents major challenges to most of the existing methods. To address this issue, we develop a novel floating random walk (FRW) method by rotating the transition cube to suit the cylindrical surface, devising a special space …

An Overview On Optimized Nlms Algorithms For Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Constantin Paleologu, Silviu Ciochină, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant Dec 2015

An Overview On Optimized Nlms Algorithms For Acoustic Echo Cancellation, Constantin Paleologu, Silviu Ciochină, Jacob Benesty, Steven L. Grant

Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Acoustic echo cancellation represents one of the most challenging system identification problems. The most used adaptive filter in this application is the popular normalized least mean square (NLMS) algorithm, which has to address the classical compromise between fast convergence/tracking and low mis adjustment. In order to meet these conflicting requirements, the step-size of this algorithm needs to be controlled. Inspired by the pioneering work of Prof. E. Hänsler and his collaborators on this fundamental topic, we present in this paper several solutions to control the adaptation of the NLMS adaptive filter. The developed algorithms are "non-parametric" in nature, i.e., they …

Gameday Food And Beverage: The Perspective Of College Football Fans, Brody J. Ruihley, Rob Hardin

Journal of Applied Marketing Theory

This study examines sport spectators’ food and beverage experience through the lens of service quality, targets of quality, and standards of quality in sport-based services. Both qualitative and quantitative data were collected from 1,495 adults attending at least one American college football game. Thematic analysis produced five themes of price, variety, quality, service, and amenities while comparison analysis found several demographic differences. Findings reveal food and beverage to be critical in overall experience at sporting events. The overwhelming majority of comments were negative and findings provide feedback as to how important this aspect of the game experience is.

On Neighborhood Effects In Location-Based Social Networks, Thanh-Nam Doan, Freddy Chong-Tat Chua, Ee-Peng Lim

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

In this paper, we analyze factors that determine the check-in decisions of users on venues using a location-based social network dataset. Based on a Foursquare dataset constructed from Singapore-based users, we devise a stringent criteria to identify the actual home locations of a subset of users. Using these users' check-ins, we aim to ascertain the neighborhood effect on the venues visited, compared with the activity level of users. We further formulate the check-in count prediction and check-in prediction tasks. A comprehensive set of features have been defined and they encompass information from users, venues, their neighbors, and friendship networks. We …

Quantization Coefficients In Infinite Systems, Eugen Mihailescu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury Dec 2015

Quantization Coefficients In Infinite Systems, Eugen Mihailescu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury

School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications

We investigate quantization coefficients for probability measures μ on limit sets, which are generated by systems S of infinitely many contractive similarities and by probabilistic vectors. The theory of quantization coefficients for infinite systems has significant differences from the finite case. One of these differences is the lack of finite maximal antichains, and another is the fact that the set of contraction ratios has zero infimum; another difference resides in the specific geometry of S and of its noncompact limit set J . We prove that, for each r ∈ ( 0 , ∞ ) , there exists a unique …

Legitimacy And The International Trade Regime, Thomas Christiano Dec 2015

Legitimacy And The International Trade Regime, Thomas Christiano

San Diego Law Review

Issues of global justice and trade are usually dealt with in terms of what a just system of trade is like and what the distribution of income, opportunities, or welfare ought to be. But the question I address and explore is what a legitimate way of making decisions in the international realm is. This issue has arisen acutely in the case of the formation of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and other international institutions. In particular, many have complained that developed countries engaged in hard bargaining with developing countries in the conferences that led up to the formation of the …

How To Construct Global Justice, Aaron James Dec 2015

How To Construct Global Justice, Aaron James

San Diego Law Review

Do social relationships between people give rise to any demands of social justice whatsoever? If they do, are they of any practical significance given the relationships living human beings are actually in? And, might they be so significant as to ground a theory of global justice—if not the whole of anything rightly called justice, then at least of the central range of issues in world politics? Finally, could that perhaps be what a political philosophy of global justice should mainly be about?

Here, in bare outline, is how the answers to all of these questions might be “yes,” at least …

From Theory To Practice I: Passing Judgments Of Exploitation, Mathias Risse, Gabriel Wollner Dec 2015

From Theory To Practice I: Passing Judgments Of Exploitation, Mathias Risse, Gabriel Wollner

San Diego Law Review

In an earlier work, we offered a view on how trade should be treated within a theory of global justice. We proposed an account of exploitation to spell out the nature of the obligations that arise from trading. That account greatly benefits from a detailed development for concrete cases. The goal of this study and its close companion is to explore how our philosophical views help formulate judgments on a range of moral problems that arise from trading and to identify responsibilities of various actors and inform policy responses to instances of exploitation in trade.

To that end we use …

Two Conceptions Of Justice And The Dystopia Of Global Justice, Horacio Spector Dec 2015

Two Conceptions Of Justice And The Dystopia Of Global Justice, Horacio Spector

San Diego Law Review

Political associations raise special questions of justice. Some authors contend that those special questions derive from characteristic features of the modern state. For instance, Thomas Nagel argues that two defining features of the political community justify associative redistributive duties that hold among its members but not among members and nonmembers. Those features are the fact that the political community exercises sovereign power over its members by resorting to the imposition of coercive rules and the fact that it exercises that power in the name of its members. In this paper, I will not challenge this assertion but will nonetheless argue …

Revising International Law: A Liberal Account Of Natural Resources, Fernando R. Tesón Dec 2015

Revising International Law: A Liberal Account Of Natural Resources, Fernando R. Tesón

San Diego Law Review

In this Article, I defend the view that natural resources originally belong to individuals who have legitimately established private property claims over them. Natural resources do not belong to a collective entity such as the people or the state. My argument is simple. Relying on the Lockean contractarian tradition, I argue that individuals must delegate any resource controlled by the state. This is because all powers of the state are, morally, delegated powers. A group’s claims over natural resources is entirely derivative of the original claims of its members. Only individuals can originally appropriate natural resources; only they have the …

Analysis Of Noise As A Way Of Understanding Emotion And Making An Installation: Reflection On Phenomenological, Parametric, Inner And Outer Worlds Meeting And Becoming Audible, P Lopreiato

School of Art, Design and Architecture

This article is centred on the idea that from the analysis and interpretation of data from the crowd noise (at historical and engaging events) it is possible to define the manifestation of extroversion of people’s perceptions and emotions. What I seek to reveal in my artistic research is not the conjugation of perceptions and emotions for individual participants but rather the collective feeling, the energy that connects and refines the involvement of individuals and creates from it a new and indivisible whole: a collective perception and sentiment that in the multilayering of noise finds its full manifestation. Crowd noise, therefore, …

Towards Entrepreneurial Learning Outcomes In Business Education And Beyond – Next Practice? Design & Guidance, Anthony Paul Buckley Dec 2015

Towards Entrepreneurial Learning Outcomes In Business Education And Beyond – Next Practice? Design & Guidance, Anthony Paul Buckley

High growth economies can be differentiated from low growth economies by their high investment in knowledge, low knowledge filter and high levels of entrepreneurial capital. These states help create entrepreneurial capital by providing their citizens with opportunities to learn to be more enterprising in their pursuit of value creation and capture. What should be taught, how and what are the appropriate learning outcomes of entrepreneurship education and training (EET) then become the relevant questions. This paper reviews the relevant EET literature, assesses current thinking and practice and concludes, in the absence of empirical evidence in favour of a particular pedagogical …

Beyond Beautiful*- Why Citizens Are Comparatively Happier, More Prosperous, More Peaceful, More Democratically Engaged And Less Selfish Living In Smaller States, Anthony Paul Buckley

Other

Half of all sovereign states in the world have a population of less than 6.2m (World Bank, 2014). The mainstream literature in most academic disciplines has chosen, by accident or design, to neglect the unique determinants of small state growth and development (Armstrong & Read, 2003; Read, 2014). These are extraordinary omissions when the collective evidence on the performance of smaller states on a wide range of economic, political, cultural and social indices is considered. Apart from the disproportionate representation that small states enjoy in the World Banks Upper-Middle and High Income categories, many small states also feature in the …

Effect Of Psychological Empowerment And Transformational Leadership On Organizational Commitment, Nurshahira Ibrahim, Azman Ismail, Nurasilah Kithuru Mohamed, Siti Salwa Salim Dec 2015

Effect Of Psychological Empowerment And Transformational Leadership On Organizational Commitment, Nurshahira Ibrahim, Azman Ismail, Nurasilah Kithuru Mohamed, Siti Salwa Salim

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

According to recent literature that relates to organizational leadership, transformational leadership consists of three important elements: idealized influence, individual consideration and intellectual stimulation. Extant studies in this area highlighted that the ability of the leaders in implementing these transformational processes (to execute organizational functions) may have a significant impact on individual outcome especially organizational commitment. Although this relationship has been studied, the mediating role of transformational leadership has taken a less prominent role in organizational leadership model. Recent studies on organizational leadership have emphasized that transformational leadership has three important characteristics: idealized influence, individual consideration and intellectual stimulation. The purpose …

The Dukuns Of Madura: Their Types And Sources Of Magical Ability In Perspective Of Clifford Geertz And Pierre Bourdieu, Bangun Sentosa D. Haryanto

Makara Human Behavior Studies in Asia

This descriptive paper is based on a research in Madura, Indonesia, in 2014. The research data was mostly through in-depth qualitative interviews and direct observation that have been developed into ethnographic case study. These methods were informed by a methodological approach derived from the ‘structural constructivism’ of Pierre Bourdieu. The main concept of “dukun” (supernatural/magic service providers) of Clifford Geertz was employed to theorize the findings and frame the argument. Within eight-month research period in Madura, I interviewed 19 dukuns and describe them using pseudo-names. Madura’s dukun phenomenon demonstrates that magic is undoubtedly one of the main strategic resources available …

Perspectives Of Extension Agents And Farmers Toward Multifunctional Agriculture In The United States Corn Belt, John W. Doudna, Matthew E. O’Neal, John C. Tyndall, Matthew J. Helmers

Journal of Extension

We surveyed the perspectives of farmers, crop professionals, and Extension agents and found that they have positive perspectives concerning multifunctional agriculture, including a positive effect of a nearby prairie to cropland productivity. The survey was conducted in central Iowa and included individuals predominantly from Iowa involved in commodity research and production. Our results are preliminary and provide a baseline for further research into the perspectives of change agents in the U.S. Corn Belt. They also provide insight into similarities among key links in the diffusion of innovation chain.

The Youth Writers: Developing Curriculum For Their Peers, Michelle Krehbiel, Melissa S. Fenton, Patricia J. Fairchild

Journal of Extension

Curricula designed for youth are often lacking a young person's influence and perspective. In order to provide engaging, "fresh" materials for youth, 4-H professionals can recruit youth as curriculum writers. Youth are given an opportunity to form positive partnerships with adults, produce engaging and creative materials for their peers, and develop leadership skills. Positive youth development is promoted through youth-adult partnerships, involvement in decision making, and contributing to projects. A model for implementing a youth writers program is described in this article.

Modeling Of Gas Production From Shale Reservoirs Considering Multiple Transport Mechanisms, Chaohua Guo, Mingzhen Wei, Hong Liu Dec 2015

Modeling Of Gas Production From Shale Reservoirs Considering Multiple Transport Mechanisms, Chaohua Guo, Mingzhen Wei, Hong Liu

Geosciences and Geological and Petroleum Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Gas transport in unconventional shale strata is a multi-mechanism-coupling process that is different from the process observed in conventional reservoirs. In micro fractures which are inborn or induced by hydraulic stimulation, viscous flow dominates. And gas surface diffusion and gas desorption should be further considered in organic nano pores. Also, the Klinkenberg effect should be considered when dealing with the gas transport problem. In addition, following two factors can play significant roles under certain circumstances but have not received enough attention in previous models. During pressure depletion, gas viscosity will change with Knudsen number; and pore radius will increase when …
