Professional Learning Communities As A Professional Development Model Focusing On Instructional Practices Used To Teach Writing In Early Childhood, Jill T. Leonard
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore the implementation of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) as a professional development model effective in altering teachers‘ perceptions of their knowledge and skill in teaching developmental writing in grades K-3. This research is necessary to examine how offering teachers collaborative support needed for understanding and implementing research-based best practice approaches to teach developmental writing strengthens the quality of instructional practice necessary to meet rigorous standards being imparted from Common Core Standards. Through the development of a PLC, teachers have an opportunity for collaborating within the school building, which provides optimal …
Predicting Intraday Financial Market Dynamics Using Takens' Vectors; Incorporating Causality Testing And Machine Learning Techniques, Abubakar-Sadiq Bouda Abdulai
Predicting Intraday Financial Market Dynamics Using Takens' Vectors; Incorporating Causality Testing And Machine Learning Techniques, Abubakar-Sadiq Bouda Abdulai
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Traditional approaches to predicting financial market dynamics tend to be linear and stationary, whereas financial time series data is increasingly nonlinear and non-stationary. Lately, advances in dynamical systems theory have enabled the extraction of complex dynamics from time series data. These developments include theory of time delay embedding and phase space reconstruction of dynamical systems from a scalar time series. In this thesis, a time delay embedding approach for predicting intraday stock or stock index movement is developed. The approach combines methods of nonlinear time series analysis with those of causality testing, theory of dynamical systems and machine learning (artificial …
Role Of The Orphan Crispr 2 In Enterococcus Faecalis, Andriy Barchuk
Role Of The Orphan Crispr 2 In Enterococcus Faecalis, Andriy Barchuk
Honors College Theses
Enterococcus faecalis is a Gram-positive aerotolerant anaerobic bacterium primarily found as a member of the human and animal intestinal flora. Enterococcus faecalis along with 27 other species comprise the genus Enterococcus. Out of the whole genus E. faecalis and E. faecium are the second most common nosocomial cause for urinary tract and wound infections. The treatment of the infections is made even more complex due to E. faecalis resistance to last-resort drugs like vancomycin. An inverse relationship has been observed in the species between antibiotic resistance and presence of the CRISPR-cas locus. CRISPR-Cas (clustered, regularly interspaced short palindromic repeats and …
Borges's Postmodern Landscape, Mario Vrbančić
Borges's Postmodern Landscape, Mario Vrbančić
CLCWeb: Comparative Literature and Culture
In his article "Borges's Postmodern Landscape" Mario Vrbančić examines specific constructs of space -- among them heterotopia (Michel Foucault) and hyperreality (Jean Baudrillard) -- and applies them to narration and narrative strategies in Jorge Luis Borges's texts. Vrbančić posits that postmodern mapping undermines our known familiar geography and that authors like Borges who experimented with different spaces and connections in their texts, represent postmodernism avant la lettre.
Malware Collection And Analysis Via Hardware Virtualization, Tamas K. Lengyel
Malware Collection And Analysis Via Hardware Virtualization, Tamas K. Lengyel
Doctoral Dissertations
Malware is one of the biggest security threat today and deploying effective defensive solutions requires the collection and rapid analysis of a continuously increasing number of samples. The collection and analysis is greatly complicated by the proliferation of metamorphic malware as the efficacy of signature-based static analysis systems is greatly reduced. While honeypots and dynamic malware analysis has been effectively deployed to combat the problem, significant challenges remain. The rapidly increasing number of malware samples poses a particular challenge as it greatly inflates the cost of the hardware required to process the influx. As modern malware also deploys anti-debugging and …
Festivals Of Art, Carnivals Of Representation: On Contemporary Art And Neoliberalism, Tijen Tunali
Festivals Of Art, Carnivals Of Representation: On Contemporary Art And Neoliberalism, Tijen Tunali
Art & Art History ETDs
In this dissertation, I look at the changing praxes of contemporary art and culture vis-á-vis neoliberalism. With examples from the Americas, the Middle East, and Eastern Europe, I acknowledge, but trespass the visible effects and outcomes of globalization with regard to art and culture. In current literature they often are interpreted as straightforward and homogeneous developments, but in this dissertation, I show the complexity, heterogeneity and inequality of new social, political, and cultural relationships wrought by and against the neoliberal ideology and processes that affect all corners of the world. My main focus is on the dialectics of contemporary art …
Designing For Immersive Technology: Integrating Art And Stem Learning, Jane Elizabeth Crayton
Designing For Immersive Technology: Integrating Art And Stem Learning, Jane Elizabeth Crayton
Art & Art History ETDs
Students struggle to learn STEM concepts. The arts have been proposed as a means to engage students in STEM education, resulting in the idea of STEAM. However, STEAM approaches do not always result in learning. A collaboration between a major research university and a small Native arts college in the southwestern United States provided an opportunity for studying the potential for arts to engage students in STEM learning. This study investigates how participating art students (N = 4) solved technological and design production problems when working with immersive technologies in a paid summer internship program. The internship program lasted six …

A Manipulation Study: The Effect Of Predation Risk On The Space Use Of The Chilean Rodent, Octodon Degus, Erin D. Myers
Honors Theses
Predation has significant effects on animal behavior and space use across species. In small mammals, the home range areas are shown to be influenced by predation risk. This project incorporates trapping data to analyze how predation risk influences the space use of Octodon degus, a social rodent endemic to Chile. We compared range size of degus living in four predator exclusion enclosures versus four control, non-predator exclusion enclosures in Parque Nacional Bosque de Fray Jorge, Chile through grid trapping methods. For each enclosure (NP and P) 95% MCP, 95% Kernal, 95% Distance Interval, and average captures was measured. There were …

Optimizing A Luciferase-Based Tool For Studying The Effects Of Fatty Acid Desaturase 7 On Singlet Oxygen Accumulation In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Abeer Muhammedali Alnasrawi
Graduate Theses and Dissertations
In plants, reactive oxygen species (ROS) are generated as a byproduct of normal metabolism, as well as in response to adverse conditions such as light stress, extreme temperatures, and exposure to pests and pathogens. Singlet oxygen (1O2) is a ROS that is formed during photosynthesis in photosystem II (PSII) of the chloroplasts. Levels of 1O2 and other ROS are tightly controlled in healthy plants, but some studies suggest that levels of fatty acid desaturase (FAD) activity in Arabidopsis thaliana can influence constitutive and/or stress-responsive ROS accumulation. In this study, a luciferase-based reporter gene that is selectively stimulated by 1O2 (AAA-ATPase: …

How Relevant Is The Disclosure Of A Ceo Pay Ratio?, Addison Stanfill
How Relevant Is The Disclosure Of A Ceo Pay Ratio?, Addison Stanfill
Accounting Undergraduate Honors Theses
An aftershock of the so called “Great Recession” in 2008, the Dodd-Frank Wall Street Reform and Consumer Protection Act effective July 21, 2010 aimed to increase the transparency of public companies. Section 953(b) of this act is targeting the transparency of executive and employee compensation by requiring the disclosure of a CEO to median employee pay ratio. This disclosure requirement, set to affect all filings with a fiscal year beginning after January 1, 2017, was a response to the public outcry against excessive CEO compensation. Although it does promote the transparency initiative of the Dodd-Frank Act, this disclosure may be …
Picosecond Time-Resolved Studies Of Multiple Energy Transfer In Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles, Louis Charles Groff Ii
Picosecond Time-Resolved Studies Of Multiple Energy Transfer In Conjugated Polymer Nanoparticles, Louis Charles Groff Ii
All Dissertations
Conjugated polymer nanoparticles (CPNs) are a model system for the study of complex, nanoscale, multichromophoric interactions. In this dissertation, we are focused on furthering our understanding of the physical picture, processes, length scales, and time scales of energy transport in conjugated polymers. In particular, we are interested in determining how parameters related to the nanoscale structure and composition of CPs affect energy transport, which is investigated using steady-state and time-resolved fluorescence spectroscopy in conjunction with Monte Carlo simulation methods. Such information could prove useful for optimizing the structure and composition of device layers (e.g., in photovoltaic devices). We additionally seek …

Modeling Arbitrarily Interval-Censored Survival Data With External Time-Dependent Covariates, Wei Fang
Modeling Arbitrarily Interval-Censored Survival Data With External Time-Dependent Covariates, Wei Fang
Dissertations
Arbitrarily interval-censored survival data refer to the situation where the exact time of the occurrence of an event of interest is only known to have occurred within some two consecutive examinations. External time-dependent covariates refer to those whose values change during the periodic follow-up, and whose value at a particular time does not require individuals to be under direct observation. Regression modeling of survival data usually either handles arbitrarily interval-censored data alone (Farrington, 1996) or external time-dependent covariates alone (Cox, 1972; Therneau & Grambsch, 2000). In the current research, an adjustment has been made to the data augmentation used in …

Trust Within Higher Education Consortia: A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Directors And Leaders, James A. Yankech
Trust Within Higher Education Consortia: A Phenomenological Study Of The Experiences Of Directors And Leaders, James A. Yankech
Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Trust is a foundational element for success within a higher education consortium. Defined as a group of colleges and universities united through collective effort, a consortium allows member institutions to achieve more cooperatively than alone. However these same institutions still compete in many ways – for students, government appropriations, and research dollars as examples. Therefore a balance must be struck between institutional and consortium interests. As a result trust between and among member institutions of a consortium becomes an important phenomenon to be understood. This study examined the phenomenon of trust from the perspective of consortia directors and leaders. Two …

Low socioeconomic students were defined as students who qualified for free/reduced lunches. The research was designed as a mixed methods study with data being collected via an online survey and interviews. This study fills a gap in the literature about parents’ reasons for choosing Non-Public Non-Denominational Elementary Schools for low socioeconomic students in Alabama.
Based on the literature there are many possible reasons for parents choosing to send their children to private schools. The literature indicated that …
Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel Morales
Undocumented Migrants As New (And Peaceful) American Revolutionaries, Daniel Morales
College of Law Faculty
This essay situates undocumented migrants in the history of the American revolutionary period. The lawbreaking of both groups produced constructive legal and social change. For example, the masses of American revolutionaries and many of their leading men fought to rid the colonies of hereditary aristocracy. Colonists had come to cherish the proto-meritocracy that had bloomed on colonial shores and rankled at local evidence of aristocratic privilege, like the Crown’s grant of landed estates to absentee English aristocrats.Today’s equivalent hereditary aristocracy is the citizenry of wealthy democracies like the United States. Hereditary citizens use immigration restrictions to reserve the wealth and …

Privacy As A Public Good, Joshua A. T. Fairfield, Christoph Engel
Privacy As A Public Good, Joshua A. T. Fairfield, Christoph Engel
Duke Law Journal
Privacy is commonly studied as a private good: my personal data is mine to protect and control, and yours is yours. This conception of privacy misses an important component of the policy problem. An individual who is careless with data exposes not only extensive information about herself, but about others as well. The negative externalities imposed on nonconsenting outsiders by such carelessness can be productively studied in terms of welfare economics. If all relevant individuals maximize private benefit, and expect all other relevant individuals to do the same, neoclassical economic theory predicts that society will achieve a suboptimal level of …
Beyond Bitcoin: Issues In Regulating Blockchain Transactions, Trevor I. Kiviat
Beyond Bitcoin: Issues In Regulating Blockchain Transactions, Trevor I. Kiviat
Duke Law Journal
The buzz surrounding Bitcoin has reached a fever pitch. Yet in academic legal discussions, disproportionate emphasis is placed on bitcoins (that is, virtual currency), and little mention is made of blockchain technology—the true innovation behind the Bitcoin protocol. Simply, blockchain technology solves an elusive networking problem by enabling “trustless” transactions: value exchanges over computer networks that can be verified, monitored, and enforced without central institutions (for example, banks). This has broad implications for how we transact over electronic networks.
This Note integrates current research from leading computer scientists and cryptographers to elevate the legal community’s understanding of blockchain technology and, …
Rethinking Janus: Preserving Primary-Participant Liability In Sec Antifraud Enforcement Actions, Greg Gaught
Rethinking Janus: Preserving Primary-Participant Liability In Sec Antifraud Enforcement Actions, Greg Gaught
Duke Law Journal
The Securities and Exchange Commission relies heavily on the securities laws’ antifraud provisions in fulfilling its role as watchdog of the U.S. securities markets. But the Supreme Court’s decision in Janus Capital Group, Inc. v. First Derivative Traders has frustrated the SEC’s efforts to keep fraud at bay. There the Court drastically narrowed the scope of actors who can qualify as primary participants in misrepresentations perpetrated in connection with the purchase or sale of securities under Rule 10b-5(b). This Note argues that Janus’s holding creates an incongruence in the SEC’s ability to enforce the securities laws’ misrepresentation provisions, with …
Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan D. Franck, Lindsey E. Wylie
Predicting Outcomes In Investment Treaty Arbitration, Susan D. Franck, Lindsey E. Wylie
Duke Law Journal
Crafting appropriate dispute settlement processes is challenging for any conflict-management system, particularly for politically sensitive international economic law disputes. As the United States negotiates investment treaties with Asian and European countries, the terms of dispute settlement have become contentious. There is a vigorous debate about whether investment treaty arbitration (ITA) is an appropriate dispute settlement mechanism. While some sing the praises of ITA, others offer a spirited critique. Some critics claim that ITA is biased against states, while others suggest ITA is predictable but unfair due to factors like arbitrator identity or venue. Using data from 159 final cases derived …
