A Lipidomics Approach To The Viral–Host Dynamics Of The Unicellular, Eukaryotic Alga Chlorella Variabilis And Its Viral Pathogen, Pbcv-1, Suzanne L. Rose
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
This thesis focuses on the sterol and sphingolipid composition in the unicellular, green alga Chlorella variabilis and the lipidomic changes that occur during viral infection. Using lipid analysis by mass spectrometry, we have identified the major sterol, ergosterol and sphingolipid, glucosyl inositol phosphoceramide (GIPC) as constituents of C. variabilis cell membranes. Sterols and sphingolipids have essential biological functions such as hormone-based signaling, plant defense, and apoptosis as well as critical roles in structural components of the cell and organelle membranes. In chapters two and three, we focus on the characterization of sterol composition among both freshwater and marine alga …

Oncogene-Dependent Regulation Of Autophagic Flux In Melanoma, Kirsten Anne Meyer White
Oncogene-Dependent Regulation Of Autophagic Flux In Melanoma, Kirsten Anne Meyer White
Biomedical Sciences ETDs
Skin cancer is the one of the most diagnosed cancers in the United States with increasing incidence of 6% every year. In 2015, it is estimated 73,870 new cases of melanoma will be identified and 9,480 individuals will die of their disease. While melanoma only accounts for approximately 2.4% of all cancer related deaths and is the 5th leading diagnosed cancer (US) it is the one of the most common cancers in young adults, age 25-29, particularly for young women. Of particular importance, the mean survival rate of patients diagnosed with metastatic melanoma is six months, with five-year survival rates …
Stella: A Python-Based Domain-Specific Language For Simulations, David Mohr
Stella: A Python-Based Domain-Specific Language For Simulations, David Mohr
Computer Science ETDs
Stella is a domain-specific language that (1) has single thread performance competitive with low-level languages, (2) supports object-oriented programming (OOP) to properly structure the code, and (3) is very easy to use. Instead of prototyping in a high-level language and then rewriting in a lower-level language, Stella is embedded in Python, is transparently usable, retains some OOP features, compiles to machine code, and executes at speed similar to C. Stella's source code is compatible with Python, and allows easy integration of C libraries. Its features are focused on the needs of scientific simulations. Other projects to speed up Python focus …
High-Dimensional Motion Planning And Learning Under Uncertain Conditions, Nick D. Malone
High-Dimensional Motion Planning And Learning Under Uncertain Conditions, Nick D. Malone
Computer Science ETDs
Many existing path planning methods do not adequately account for uncertainty. Without uncertainty these existing techniques work well, but in real world environments they struggle due to inaccurate sensor models, arbitrarily moving obstacles, and uncertain action consequences. For example, picking up and storing childrens toys is a simple task for humans. Yet, for a robotic household robot the task can be daunting. The room must be modeled with sensors, which may or may not detect all the strewn toys. The robot must be able to detect and avoid the child who may be moving the very toys that the robot …

Radiation therapy is one of the most effective means for treating cancers. An important calculation in radiation therapy is the estimation of dose distribution in the treated patient, which is key to determining the treatment outcome and potential side effects of the therapy. Biological dose — the level of biological damage (e.g., cell killing ratio, DNA damage, etc.) inflicted by the radiation is the best measure of treatment quality, but it is very difficult to calculate. Therefore, most clinics today use physical dose - the energy deposited by incident radiation per unit body mass - for planning radiation therapy, which …
Expansion Of The Chlorovirus Genus By Studies On Virus Natural History And Chlorella Host Metabolism, Cristian F. Quispe
Expansion Of The Chlorovirus Genus By Studies On Virus Natural History And Chlorella Host Metabolism, Cristian F. Quispe
School of Biological Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Inland waters cover about 2.5 percent of our planet and harbor huge numbers of known and unknown microorganisms including viruses. Viruses likely play dynamic, albeit largely undocumented roles in regulating microbial communities and in recycling nutrients in the ecosystem. Phycodnaviruses are a genetically diverse, yet morphologically similar, group of large dsDNA-containing viruses (160- to 560-kb) that inhabit aquatic environments. Members of the genus Chlorovirus are common in freshwater. They replicate in eukaryotic, single-celled, chlorella-like green algae that normally exist as endosymbionts of protists in nature. Very little is known about the natural history of the chloroviruses and how they achieve …

Sage-Grouse Nests In An Active Conifer Mastication Site, Charles P. Sandford, David K. Dahlgren, Terry A. Messmer
The Prairie Naturalist
Greater sage-grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus; sage-grouse) have experienced long-term range-wide population declines and now may occupy less than 50% of their historic range (Schroeder et al. 2004). Conifer encroachment into sagebrush (Artemisia spp.) habitat was identified as a major conservation threat by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) as the agency reviewed the listing status of the species for possible protection under the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (USFWS 2013).
Conifer encroachment into sagebrush habitats negatively impacts sage-grouse at landscape scales (Doherty et al. 2008, Casazza et al. 2011, Baruch-Mordo et al. 2013). Sage-grouse will utilize …

In recent times, great strides have been made towards the advancement of automated reasoning and knowledge management applications, along with their associated methodologies. The introduction of the World Wide Web peaked academicians’ interest in harnessing the power of linked, online documents for the purpose of developing machine learning corpora, providing dynamical knowledge bases for question answering systems, fueling automated entity extraction applications, and performing graph analytic evaluations, such as uncovering the inherent structural semantics of linked pages. Even more recently, substantial attention in the wider computer science and information systems disciplines has been focused on the evolving study of social …
North Shore: A Natural History Of Minnesota’S Superior Coast, Janet R. Keough
North Shore: A Natural History Of Minnesota’S Superior Coast, Janet R. Keough
The Prairie Naturalist
Many readers of The Prairie Naturalist have lived along or visited Lake Superior’s coast. Like me, you have probably wondered about the geology and history of this beautiful and dramatic feature of northeastern Minnesota. Chel Anderson and Adelheid Fischer have written an accessible book that comprehensively describes the history and geology of the coast, surrounding highlands, and Lake Superior itself. In addition, the authors have provided fascinating subchapters on some of the most interesting species that are key elements of the region.
This rather large but beautiful book is arranged in five major chapters that cover the dominant geological units …
Distribution And Occurrence Of Bat Species In North Dakota, Josiah J. Nelson, Paul R. Barnhart, Erin H. Gillam
Distribution And Occurrence Of Bat Species In North Dakota, Josiah J. Nelson, Paul R. Barnhart, Erin H. Gillam
The Prairie Naturalist
Prior to 2009, a detailed survey of occurrence and distribution of bats in North Dakota had not been conducted. Localized surveys, occurrence reports, and museum specimens provided the only records of bats in the state. Ongoing habitat loss, exploitation of natural resources, and the impending spread of white-nose syndrome to the western United States are major threats to bat populations of the region. The objective of this study was to document presence and distributions of bat species resident in North Dakota. From 2009 to 2012, multiple mist-netting and acoustic surveys were conducted to document species presence across North Dakota. A …

This Is Really Happening: Criticality And Discussions Of Context In Acrl's Framework For Information Literacy, Kevin Patrick Seeber
This Is Really Happening: Criticality And Discussions Of Context In Acrl's Framework For Information Literacy, Kevin Patrick Seeber
Communications in Information Literacy
The development of the ACRL Framework for Information Literacy has sparked an immense amount of conversation among academic librarians, though the profession is still far from consensus with regards to if, when, or how the document should be implemented. This essay argues that despite debates over various points within the text, the overall theme of the Framework is a call for librarians and educators to recognize the importance of context when discussing information literacy. As this relates to the curriculum of higher education, instruction and assignments can no longer afford to separate "school" from "real life." Classroom instruction must recognize …

Is it legal to use Google Glass while driving? Most states ban texting while driving and a large number also forbid drivers from being able to see television and video screens. But do these statutes apply to Google Glass? Google advises users to check their states’ law and to “[r]ead up and follow the law!” Yet, laws designed for a tangible world are very difficult to apply to virtual screens projected by futuristic wearable technology. In short order, however, police and prosecutors across the country will be called upon to apply outdated distracted driving laws to Google Glass.

Comparing Reproductive Capacity Of Nearshore And Offshore Red Snapper, Lutjanus Campechanus, On Artificial Reefs In The Western Gulf Of Mexico, Ricky J. Alexander
Theses and Dissertations
Red snapper collected quarterly from four artificial reefs in south Texas were examined to compare total length, total weight, age, and the proportion of male to female red snapper, calculate gonadosomatic index values, batch fecundity, annual spawning frequency, and annual fecundity, and estimate size and age at maturity. Spawning occurred from April to September, with most active spawning observed in June (58%). Despite larger red snapper producing more eggs, and fish being larger offshore, most active spawning (68%) and egg production (74%) was observed nearshore. Female red snapper reached 50% maturity (L50) between 350-550 mm, and L75 by 600 mm. …

Low-Velocity Impact Analysis Of Composite Repair Patches Of Different Shapes, Sarvesh Baliga
Low-Velocity Impact Analysis Of Composite Repair Patches Of Different Shapes, Sarvesh Baliga
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The area under crack for various structures can be effectively repaired by the use of composite materials. Low velocity impact can cause barely visible damage to the interior structure of laminated composite. These impacts can cause delamination in composite materials. In this study, a Finite Element Analysis was conducted using Abaqus/Explicit and the results of the analysis were compared to the experimental data from literature. E-glass/epoxy composite laminate was subjected to a low velocity impact test. To study the effect of patch repair, a composite patch was applied on a cracked laminate and a low velocity impact was then conducted …

Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
This study focuses on the computational benchmarking as well as validation against experimental results of a rib roughed surface in an internal channel of a stationary turbine blade. STAR-CCM+ was utilized to replace a model from a published article, and to analyze the CFD conjugate heat transfer by determining the turbulence model that best matched the published experimental values. Using those computational conditions and CFD results, an in house experimental rig was validated by comparing convective heat transfer coefficients and pressure profiles. This cooling method, when compared to a smooth channel, enhances turbulent mixing my separating and reattaching the boundary …
Lagrangian Points And Jacobi Constants For A Class Of Asteroids, Tasneem Rashid
Lagrangian Points And Jacobi Constants For A Class Of Asteroids, Tasneem Rashid
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
Asteroid Gravitational Potentials are difficult to model owing to their irregularity in shape. This thesis focuses on two approaches to model asteroid gravity fields, namely, multiple-body and spherical harmonics modeling. Computation of gravity potential serves as a first step to determine equilibrium points called Lagrangian points for a spacecraft orbiting as an asteroid. Further, Jacobi analysis is carried out to determine zero-velocity regions, i.e., inaccessible regions corresponding to the unstable Lagrangian points. Multiple sphere modeling was studied through analysis of so called Asteroid Restricted Three and Four Body Problems, providing insight into the method of modeling an asteroid as a …

Numerical Study Of Synthetic-Jet Actuation Effect On Airfoil Trailing Edge Noise, Marco Sansone
Numerical Study Of Synthetic-Jet Actuation Effect On Airfoil Trailing Edge Noise, Marco Sansone
Doctoral Dissertations and Master's Theses
The current study conducts numerical simulations to assess the possibility of employing Synthetic Jet Actuators (SJAs) as active noise control devices for reduction of airfoil acoustic radiation. High-accuracy numerical efforts employ a sixth-order accurate Navier-Strokes solver implementing a low-pass filtering of poorly resolved high-frequency solution content to retain numerical accuracy and stability over the range of transitional flow regimes. In the adopted numerical procedure, the actuator is modeled without its resonator cavity through imposing a simple fluctuating-velocity boundary condition at the bottom orifice of the actuator. The orifice cavity with the properly defined boundary condition is embedded into the airfoil …
