Operational Analysis Of Traditional Access Management Strategies & Demand-Responsive Access Control On Arterials, Joshua Mitchell Dec 2015

Operational Analysis Of Traditional Access Management Strategies & Demand-Responsive Access Control On Arterials, Joshua Mitchell

All Theses

Arterials are typically characterized by closely-spaced signalized intersections, high driveway density, and high traffic volumes. These characteristics contribute to congestion, as well as crashes. Access management strategies can address both operational and safety issues on urban arterials. This research focuses on the operational impacts of access management with two objectives: (1) quantify the impacts of ‘traditional’ access management strategies and (2) quantify the impacts of demand-responsive access control. To satisfy Objective 1, four traditional access management strategies were tested – (i) access spacing, (ii) corner clearance, (iii) access restriction, and (iv) raised median implementation. These were analyzed in four respective …

Analysis Of Diffusion In Heat Seals Using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Mark Hendrickson Dec 2015

Analysis Of Diffusion In Heat Seals Using Energy Dispersive X-Ray Spectroscopy, Mark Hendrickson

All Theses

Heat sealing is one of several methods used to weld thermoplastic materials in packaging. Heat seals were made between Dow 501i LDPE and DuPont Nucrel 1202HC poly (ethylene co-methacrylic acid). The seals were exposed to sodium hydroxide solution so that the methacrylic acid sites of the DuPont Nucrel 1202HC were neutralized with a sodium ion. This was done to make diffusion measurements. Two side heated tooling sealing was used to make seals at 40 psi (276kPa), 1.0 second dwell, and temperatures ranging from 200oF (93.3oC) to 300oF (148.9oC). Energy dispersive x-ray spectroscopy, a function of scanning electron microscopy, was used …

Painting With Turbulence, Chuqiao Wang Dec 2015

Painting With Turbulence, Chuqiao Wang

All Theses

Inspired by a study that identified a strong similarity between Vincent van Gogh's and Jackson Pollock's painting techniques, this thesis explores the interplay between science and art, specifically the unpredictable behaviors in turbulent flows and aesthetic concepts in painting. It utilizes data from a GPU-based air flow simulation, and presents a framework for artists to visualize the chaotic property changes in turbulent flows and create paintings with turbulence data. While the creation of individual brushstrokes is procedural and driven by simulation, artists are able to exercise their aesthetic judgments at various stages during a painting creation. A short animation demonstrates …

Ocean Surface Shader, Kara Lauren Gundersen Dec 2015

Ocean Surface Shader, Kara Lauren Gundersen

All Theses

The Renderman Layered Ocean Shader (RLOS) is a RenderMan displacement shader that makes it easier and more efficient to generate realistic oceans. The shader implements a Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) wave algorithm to generate tileable ocean surface displacements. These displacement layers can be added to other displacement layers to increase surface detail. The RLOS can optionally generate multiple layers with editable parameters so that it is possible to create extended ocean surfaces that can be viewed up close. The result is demonstrated with an animated time-lapse.

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Host T cell reactivity toward gut bacterial epitopes has been recognized as part of disease pathogenesis. However, the specificity of T cells that recognize this vast number of epitopes has not yet been well described. After colonizing a C57BL/6J germ-free mouse with the human gut symbiotic bacteria Bacteroides thetaiotaomicron, we isolated a T cell that recognized these bacteria in vitro. Using this T cell, we mapped the first known non-carbohydrate T cell epitope within the phylum Bacteroidetes. The T cell also reacted to two other additional Bacteroides species. We identified the peptide that stimulated the T cell by …

The Human Gut Mycobiome: Pitfalls And Potentials — A Mycologist's Perspective, Mallory J. Suhr, Heather E. Hallen-Adams

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

We have entered the Age of the Microbiome, with new studies appearing constantly and whole journals devoted to the human microbiome. While bacteria outnumber other gut microbes by orders of magnitude, eukaryotes are consistently found in the human gut, and are represented primarily by the fungi. Compiling 36 studies spanning from 1917 to 2015, we found at least 267 distinct fungal taxa have been reported from the human gut, and seemingly every new study includes one or more fungi not previously described from this niche. This diversity, while impressive, is illusory. If we examine gut fungi, we will quickly observe …

Objective: Evidence has demonstrated profound influence of genetic background on cardiovascular phenotypes. Murine models in Marfan syndrome (MFS) have shown that genetic background-related variations affect thoracic aortic aneurysm formation, rupture, and lifespan of mice. MFS mice with C57Bl/6 genetic background are less susceptible to aneurysm formation compared to the 129/SvEv genetic background. In this study, we hypothesize that susceptibility to abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) will be increased in 129/SvEv mice versus C57Bl/6 mice. We tested this hypothesis by assessing differences in aneurysm size, tissue properties, immune response, and MMP expression.

Methods: Mice of C57Bl/6 or 129/SvEv background underwent AAA induction …

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Daily rhythms in nature, such as the opening and closing of flowers or our patterns of sleep and wakefulness and their association with the perpetual alteration of night and day, were recognized in antiquity although their origins were not questioned until the eighteenth century. The French Astronomer Jean-Jacques d’Ortous de Mairan conducted an investigation into whether the leaves of the Mimosa plant opened in response to light.1 While de Mairan’s experiments were the first to question the origin of such daily rhythms, Augustin Pyramus de Candolle is credited with the first suggestion that they arose through an internal timekeeping …

A Synthetic Porcine Reproductive And Respiratory Syndrome Virus Strain Confers Unprecedented Levels Of Heterologous Protection, Hiep Vu, Fangrui Ma, William W. Laegreid, Asit K. Pattnaik, David Steffen, Alan R. Doster, Fernando Osorio

School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Current vaccines do not provide sufficient levels of protection against divergent porcine reproductive and respiratory syndrome virus (PRRSV) strains circulating in the field, mainly due to the substantial variation of the viral genome. We describe here a novel approach to generate a PRRSV vaccine candidate that could confer unprecedented levels of heterologous protection against divergent PRRSV isolates. By using a set of 59 nonredundant, full-genome sequences of type 2 PRRSVs, a consensus genome (designated PRRSV-CON) was generated by aligning these 59 PRRSV full-genome sequences, followed by selecting the most common nucleotide found at each position of the alignment. Next, the …

Review Of Galicia, A Sentimental Nation: Gender, Culture And Politics, By Helena Miguélez-Carballeira, Iker González-Allende

Spanish Language and Literature Papers
