School Policy And Practice To Tackle A Public Health Problem: Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Leigh Lynn Mcgown-Kauffman Dec 2015

School Policy And Practice To Tackle A Public Health Problem: Sudden Cardiac Arrest, Leigh Lynn Mcgown-Kauffman

Dissertations

Sudden cardiac arrest (SCA) is a leading cause of death in the United States. While the medical research has exhaustively documented that immediate response directly impacts survival rates in SCA and that schools could be the best catalyst for creating change by bystanders, there is little to no educational research addressing school policy or practices in regards to cardiac emergencies in schools. The purpose of this dissertation was to identify and describe characteristics of the Colorado schools that offer cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) training and onsite automated external defibrillators (AED). Two research questions were answered, Of respondents, what are the characteristics …

Predicting Coaching Efficacy In National Collegiate Athletic Association Assistant Coaches: A Social Psychological Analysis Of Coaching Goals, Commitment, And Values, Brett Allen Nichols

Dissertations

Coaching is a complex undertaking and understanding what it takes to be an effective coach is important for coaches and researchers in the field of sport and exercise science. Horn’s (2008) heuristic model of coaching effectiveness organizes and summarizes the previously established relationships among predictors and outcomes of effective coaching. The purpose of this study was to examine the heart of Horn’s model, specifically examining coaching goals, coaching commitment, and coaching values with the five dimensions of coaching efficacy (Feltz et al., 1999; Myers et al., 2008). Using intercollegiate assistant coaches (N=740) this study demonstrated initial reliability and factorial validity …

All Families Are Unique: Experiences Of Lesbian-Parented Families, Rachel Tova Gall Dec 2015

All Families Are Unique: Experiences Of Lesbian-Parented Families, Rachel Tova Gall

Dissertations

This study explored the experiences of families with lesbian mothers and elementary school-aged children residing in metropolitan areas of the United States. This phenomenology aimed to transcend comparative and binary research to include the voices of sexual minorities and children. Eight whole-family interviews were conducted in alignment with the study’s systemic-constructivist approach. A number of themes emerged from the data that were generally consistent with prior research. Mothers were intentional about the communities in which they surrounded themselves, the process of having children, and having discussions with children about potential discrimination. Participants saw themselves as advocates and were typically out …

The Development Of Bob Brookmeyer's Compositional Style: A Comparative Study Of Six Works For Jazz Ensemble, Ryan Patrick Middagh Dec 2015

The Development Of Bob Brookmeyer's Compositional Style: A Comparative Study Of Six Works For Jazz Ensemble, Ryan Patrick Middagh

Dissertations

This study examines six pieces for large jazz ensemble written by Bob Brookmeyer in order to trace his compositional development over time. My analyses of melody, rhythm, form, structure, voicings, harmony, and orchestration illustrate how Brookmeyer's compositions fell into three distinct periods: early, middle, and late. In Brookmeyer's early period, his compositions exhibit a strong influence from the Count Basie band, conventional chord progressions, and eight- or twelve-measure phrases. His middle period compositions are defined by harmonic extremes and the use of indeterminacy, whereas he returned to simpler harmonies and added greater weight to counterpoint in his late period. Findings …

Design Of A High Capacity, Scalable, And Green Wireless Communication System Leveraging The Unlicensed Spectrum, Mohammad Riaz Khawer Dec 2015

Design Of A High Capacity, Scalable, And Green Wireless Communication System Leveraging The Unlicensed Spectrum, Mohammad Riaz Khawer

Dissertations - ALL

The stunning demand for mobile wireless data that has been recently growing at an exponential rate requires a several fold increase in spectrum. The use of unlicensed spectrum is thus critically needed to aid the existing licensed spectrum to meet such a huge mobile wireless data traffic growth demand in a cost effective manner. The deployment of Long Term Evolution (LTE) in the unlicensed spectrum (LTE-U) has recently been gaining significant industry momentum. The lower transmit power regulation of the unlicensed spectrum makes LTE deployment in the unlicensed spectrum suitable only for a small cell. A small cell utilizing LTE-L …

Soft Reversible Actuator Based On Shape Memory Polymer, Che Tan Dec 2015

Soft Reversible Actuator Based On Shape Memory Polymer, Che Tan

Dissertations - ALL

My research employs two shape memory polymer based approaches to develop thermally-triggered soft reversible actuators. Our approaches throughout this thesis aim at developing soft actuators with both simple and complex geometries that have the spatial control over actuation shapes, which makes them desirable for a broad range of applications.

In this thesis, we employed a porous poly (caprolactone) (PCL) shape memory polymer foam infiltrated with PDMS elastomeric matrix to fabricate the actuators. Thermal/mechanical characterizations were used to demonstrate good thermal properties and thermomechanical behavior of materials and composites. Scanning electron microscopy was conducted to illustrate the morphology of the composite …

Heterogeneous Sensor Signal Processing For Inference With Nonlinear Dependence, Hao He Dec 2015

Heterogeneous Sensor Signal Processing For Inference With Nonlinear Dependence, Hao He

Dissertations - ALL

Inferring events of interest by fusing data from multiple heterogeneous sources has been an interesting and important topic in recent years. Several issues related to inference using heterogeneous data with complex and nonlinear dependence are investigated in this dissertation. We apply copula theory to characterize the dependence among heterogeneous data.

In centralized detection, where sensor observations are available at the fusion center (FC), we study copula-based fusion. We design detection algorithms based on sample-wise copula selection and mixture of copulas model in different scenarios of the true dependence. The proposed approaches are theoretically justified and perform well when applied to …

Eliciting Bootstrapping: The Development Of Introductory Statistics Students’ Informal Inferential Reasoning Via Resampling, Jeffrey Allen Mclean

Dissertations - ALL

Bootstrapping has become an important tool for statisticians, who assert that it is intuitive to novice statistics students. The process of collecting bootstrap resamples was once time demanding, but technology now allows data collection to be performed nearly instantaneously. This study focuses on the construction and development of secondary and tertiary introductory statistics students' (n=68) reasoning about bootstrapping and informal inference. Students engaged in a four-week instructional unit designed as two model development sequences. Through the use of hands-on manipulatives and technology, students constructed and developed reasoning of sampling, the resampling process of bootstrapping, and inference. The focus of my …

Trying Times: Disability, Activism, And Education In Samoa, 1970-1980, Juliann Anesi

Dissertations - ALL

In the 1970s and 1980s, Samoan women organizers established Aoga Fiamalamalama and Loto Taumafai, which were educational institutions in Samoa, an island in the Pacific. Establishing these schools for students with intellectual and physical disabilities, excluded from attending formal schools based on the misconception that they were "uneducable". In this project, I seek to understand how parent advocates, allies, teachers, women organizers, women with disabilities, and former students of these schools understood disability, illness, inclusive education, and community organizing. Through interviews and analysis of archival documents, stories, cultural myths, legends related to people with disabilities, pamphlets, and newspaper media, I …

The Legends Of Bigfoot: Or How I Regained My Manhood, Blaine Mccarty Dec 2015

The Legends Of Bigfoot: Or How I Regained My Manhood, Blaine Mccarty

Master of Arts in American Studies Capstones

Masculinity is a culturally defined identity that exists with no single way to express it. However, the cultural politics police masculinity to appear natural and non-changing, but masculinity changes over history influenced by events and the culture from which it gets its definition. Because of this twofold influence on the identity, there is a constant struggle of the appropriate ways to express masculinity in its attempt to normalize itself by defining what is and is not masculine. This work examines how Bigfoot, the hairy fabled monster, embodies conversations about masculinity during a shift in the masculine identity in a constantly …

Preventing Thymus Involution In K5.Cyclin D1 Transgenic Mice Sustains The Naïve T Cell Compartment With Age, Michelle L. Bolner Dec 2015

Preventing Thymus Involution In K5.Cyclin D1 Transgenic Mice Sustains The Naïve T Cell Compartment With Age, Michelle L. Bolner

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The thymus maintains T cell receptor (TCR) repertoire diversity through perpetual release of self-MHC restricted naive T cells. However, thymus involution during the aging process reduces naïve T cell output, leading to defective immune responsiveness to newly encountered antigens. We have found that early thymus involution precipitates the age-associated shift favoring memory T cell dominancy in young control mice. Furthermore, we have shown that age-related thymus involution is prevented in mice expressing a keratin 5 promoter-driven Cyclin D1 (K5.D1) transgene in thymic epithelial cells (TECs). Thymopoiesis occurs normally in K5.D1 transgenic thymi and sustains T cell output to prevent the …

Investigation Of Quatitative Image Features From Pretreatment Ct And Fdg-Pet Scans In Stage Iii Nsclc Patients Undergoing Defintive Radiation Therapy, David Fried

Dissertations and Theses (Open Access)

The purpose of this work was to determine if quantitative image features (QIFs) extracted from computed tomography (CT) and flourodeoxyglucose (FDG) positron emission tomography (PET) could provide prognostic information to improve outcome models. Our goal for this work was to determine if it may one day be feasible to incorporate QIFs into personalized cancer care. QIFs were used to quantitatively characterize patient disease as seen on imaging. A leave-one-out cross-validation procedure was used to assess the prognostic ability of QIFs extracted from CT and PET in addition to conventional prognostic factors (CPFs). QIFs were found to improve model fit for …

Person-Corporate Social Responsibility Fit: Considering The Effects Of Corporate Values On Fit Within The Organization, Brittney Winters

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) is an expanding trend as more organizations have adopted various CSR policies. Due to this, CSR has been a growing topic in Business and Psychology research, especially on the micro-level of CSR’s effects on individual employee outcomes. In this study, we proposed a new sub-dimension of Person-Organization (P-O) fit, such that there’s a Person-CSR (P-CSR) fit: the perceived congruence between an individuals’ values with an organization’s CSR initiatives. We predicted that P-CSR fit would explain additional variance over and beyond P-O fit for organizational outcomes: organizational commitment, organizational identity, job satisfaction, and organizational citizenship behaviors. Further, …

“God Hates Fags”—The Use Of Religion As Justification For Prejudice Towards Homosexuals, Michelle S. Fabros Dec 2015

“God Hates Fags”—The Use Of Religion As Justification For Prejudice Towards Homosexuals, Michelle S. Fabros

Electronic Theses, Projects, and Dissertations

The Westboro Baptist Church and Phelps family are notorious for their signs proclaiming anti-homosexuality epithets such as “God Hates Fag,” and references to Biblical verses to revile homosexuality (e.g., Romans 1:24-27). Although the homonegativity bias that Westboro patrons and many traditional Christians express is often understood as being rooted in religion, I proposed the possibility that religion can be a justification rather than source of homonegativity. That is, although religion typically is seen as the source of prejudice towards LGBT+ people, I argued that this relationship might work in reverse. I examined under which conditions this “reverse” phenomena might occur …

Lethal And Legal? The Ethics Of Drone Strikes, Shima D. Keene Dr. Dec 2015

Lethal And Legal? The Ethics Of Drone Strikes, Shima D. Keene Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

While supporters claim that drone warfare is not only legal but ethical and wise, others have suggested that drones are prohibited weapons under International Humanitarian Law (IHL) because they cause, or have the effect of causing, indiscriminate killings of civilians, such as those in the vicinity of a targeted person. The main legal justification made by the Barack Obama Administration for the use of armed drones is self-defense. However, there is ambiguity as to whether this argument can justify a number of recent attacks by the United States. In order to determine the legality of armed drone strikes, other factors …

Enabling Others To Win In A Complex World: Maximizing Security Force Assistance Potential In The Regionally Aligned Brigade Combat Team, Liam P. Walsh Cpt (P) Dec 2015

Enabling Others To Win In A Complex World: Maximizing Security Force Assistance Potential In The Regionally Aligned Brigade Combat Team, Liam P. Walsh Cpt (P)

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

Beginning in 2013, the U.S. Army began an effort to “engage regionally and respond globally.” A central tenant of this strategy, building upon National strategic guidance, is the necessity to build partner capacity. Army units, through the regionally aligned forces concept, may find themselves conducting security force assistance (SFA) missions across the globe as a means to achieve these ways. However, after examining the Army’s SFA mission in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from 2003-10, it becomes apparent that institutional and organizational shortcomings plagued the Army’s initial efforts in this critical aspect of the campaign. Many of these shortcomings remain in the …

Reforming U.S. Export Controls Reforms: Advancing U.S. Army Interests, Richard Weitz Dr. Dec 2015

Reforming U.S. Export Controls Reforms: Advancing U.S. Army Interests, Richard Weitz Dr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

The U.S. defense export system needs further major reforms to reduce inefficiencies and weaknesses. Although the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) do help prevent potential foreign adversaries from using U.S. arms against the United States and its allies, the Regulations, as enforced, can weaken U.S. national security in other important ways. For example, by excessively impeding defense exports, the ITAR makes it more difficult for U.S. firms to sustain core U.S. defense technological and industrial advantages, decreases U.S. military interoperability with allies that purchase ITAR-free weapons from other sources, and generates other undesirable effects for the U.S. Army and …

Validating Side Scan Sonar As A Fish Survey Tool, Michael A. Bollinger Dec 2015

Validating Side Scan Sonar As A Fish Survey Tool, Michael A. Bollinger

Theses and Dissertations

Hydroacoustic methods can be used to answer a variety of questions regarding fish populations and behavior. In this study, side scan sonar methodology was developed to quantify abundance and biomass and compared to established visual observation methods on SCUBA over artificial reef structures in the western Gulf of Mexico. Side scan sonar methods were equivalent to SCUBA surveys for measuring fish abundance over the same reef areas, however, abundances were significantly higher when the larger area sampled by side scan was utilized. Side scan sonar methods were also more time efficient than SCUBA, ROV and long line fishing methods (66.7%, …

Pressure Field Estimation Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Jean O. Calzada Dec 2015

Pressure Field Estimation Using Particle Image Velocimetry, Jean O. Calzada

Theses and Dissertations

In recent years, scientist and engineers have shown the advantages created by using the Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) method as flow diagnostic tool to characterize instantaneous velocity fields. One of the important benefits is found on its non-intrusive nature, this leads to accurate velocity fields. From the velocity field obtained by PIV important quantities can be derived, such as pressure and vorticity. The present study, uses PIV data of an incompressible turbulent pulsed jet to determine the pressure field associated with the flow field. The pressure is calculated by using the averaged velocity field along with three different fundamental equation: …

Molecular Modeling And Mutational Mapping Of The Gpr119 Binding Site, Shane M. Askar

Theses and Dissertations

GPR119 receptor’s biological role in regulating glucose homeostasis has been studied extensively. Results in the scientific literature indicate that, when activated, GPR119 releases insulin in a glucose dependent manner. Currently the 3D structure of GPR119 has not been resolved.

The goal of this research is to use a combination of homology modeling and ligand docking studies to predict the binding mode of GPR119 ligands. Amino acids implicated to have direct interactions with docked ligands will further be assessed experimentally for their roll in binding and activation of GPR119. Our results indicate that residues W2656.48 and R813.28 are likely to be …

Liberty, Equality, Indebtedness: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams And The Problem Of Debt In A Revolutionary Age, Martha Salazar Cantu Dec 2015

Liberty, Equality, Indebtedness: Thomas Jefferson, John Adams And The Problem Of Debt In A Revolutionary Age, Martha Salazar Cantu

Theses and Dissertations

In this thesis I examine how the issue of debt contributed to the political tensions between the New England region and the Chesapeake region during the Revolutionary Age. The merging of the two regions’ economies into one federal union caused political divisions, which remained beyond the period of the Early Republic. Examining the cultural attitudes of each region towards debt provides a better understanding of the political problems between these two regions. The integration of the consignment culture of the Southern states with the Puritan ethic of the New England states caused economic difficulties for the young Republic. The research …

Decomposition And Nitrogen Dynamics Of Turtle Grass (Thalassia Testudinum) In A Subtropical Estuarine System, Monica Delgado Dec 2015

Decomposition And Nitrogen Dynamics Of Turtle Grass (Thalassia Testudinum) In A Subtropical Estuarine System, Monica Delgado

Theses and Dissertations

Seagrass beds are pivotal in the functioning of coastal ecosystems in terms of productivity, organic matter turnover and nutrient cycling. Aiming to document decay and nitrogen (N) dynamics of turtle grass (Thalassia testudinum) in a subtropical estuarine system, decomposition patterns of leaves and rhizomes were characterized and compared. Nitrogen usage during decomposition of tissues, and of live tissues and epiphytes growing on live leaves, was also quantified and compared. Stable isotope ratios allowed tracing N within the seagrass bed, following N incorporation into seagrass tissues from the surrounding media (water, sediment). Leaves had a higher N content and decomposed at …
