Underestimated: Our Not So Peaceful Nuclear Future, Henry D. Sokolski Mr. Dec 2015

Underestimated: Our Not So Peaceful Nuclear Future, Henry D. Sokolski Mr.

Books, Monographs & Collaborative Studies

With the world focused on the nuclear crisis in Iran, it is tempting to think that addressing this case, North Korea, and the problem of nuclear terrorism is all that matters and is what matters most. Perhaps, but if states become more willing to use their nuclear weapons to achieve military advantage, the problem of proliferation will become much more unwieldy. In this case, U.S. security will be hostage not just to North Korea, Iran, or terrorists, but to nuclear proliferation more generally, diplomatic miscalculations, and wars between a much larger number of possible players. This, in a nutshell, is …

The present study investigated the feasibility of production of sophorolipids (SLs) using yeast Candida bombicola grown on hydrolysates derived lignocellulosic feedstock either with or without supplementing oil as extra carbon source. Several researchers have reported using pure sugars and various oil sources for producing SLs which makes them expensive for scale-up and commercial production. In order to make the production process truly sustainable and renewable, we used feedstocks such as sweet sorghum bagasse, corn fiber and corn stover. Without oil supplementation, the cell densities at the end of day-8 was recorded as 9.2, 9.8 and 10.8 g/L for hydrolysate derived …

Electrical Transport And Photoconduction Of Ambipolar Tungsten Diselenide And N-Type Indium Selenide, Michael Orcino Fralaide Dec 2015

Electrical Transport And Photoconduction Of Ambipolar Tungsten Diselenide And N-Type Indium Selenide, Michael Orcino Fralaide

Theses

In today's "silicon age" in which we live, field-effect transistors (FET) are the workhorse of virtually all modern-day electronic gadgets. Although silicon currently dominates most of these electronics, layered 2D transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDCs) have great potential in low power optoelectronic applications due to their indirect-to-direct band gap transition from bulk to few-layer and high on/off switching ratios. TMDC WSe2 is studied here, mechanically exfoliated from CVT-grown bulk WSe2 crystals, to create a few-layered ambipolar FET, which transitions from dominant p-type behavior to n-type behavior dominating as temperature decreases. A high electron mobility μ>150 cm2V-1s-1 was found in the …

Lineages of soybean that are resistant to SCN have been …

Avian Response To Cp33 Habitat Buffers In Southern Illinois, Brady Yeo Neiles Dec 2015

Avian Response To Cp33 Habitat Buffers In Southern Illinois, Brady Yeo Neiles

Theses

Agricultural grasslands have replaced native Midwestern prairies in the form of pasture, idle cropland and conservation fields. The condition of these cover types directly and indirectly influences the distribution, variety and productivity of avian populations within these landscapes. CP33 habitat buffers are an incentive-based conservation practice specifically designed to increase upland bird habitat and productivity. Landowners are encouraged to remove row crops from production and return them to early successional grassland habitat along the margin of agricultural fields. However, buffers exhibit a high perimeter-to-area ratio, which may increase negative edge effects, thereby creating sink populations. During the 2013 and 2014 …

Improving Evaluation In Nonprofit Organizations: A Study Of How Evaluation Requests For Proposals Are Developed, Responded To, And Fulfilled, Nakia S. Matthews

Dissertations

It is often necessary for nonprofit organizations (NPOs) to formulate a Request for Proposal (RFP) to procure essential contracted services. This is most common when seeking the services of an external evaluator. Since most NPOs do not have internal evaluation staff, developing an appropriate RFP can be quite challenging. With limited literature and resources to guide NPOs on how to prepare RFPs, the process for procuring qualified evaluators can be even more daunting. This lack of resources and supports can lead to insufficient or incomplete RFPs, subsequently narrowing the pool of qualified potential bidders and reducing the extent to which …

The Never Ending Confession: The Confessional Mode In Two Novels By Mempo Giardinelli, Ryan Russel Hill

Theses and Dissertations

In the years following the military dictatorship in Argentina many novels were published that spoke about the violence, terror, and traumas experienced during the Junta's rule. These texts deal with the theme of memory and retell the traumas of the past as a form of mourning. Such novels look back to the past in an effort to redeem it. In this essay I explore the use of the confessional mode in postdictatorial literature as a vehicle for the task of mourning. In two of his novels, Qué solos se quedan los muertos (1985) and Cuestiones interiores (2003), Argentine author Mempo …
